Devadattena hi tath±gata½ j²vit± voropetu½ payojitesu dhanuggahesu sabbapaµhama½ pesitena ±gantv± “n±ha½, bhante, sakkomi ta½ bhagavanta½ j²vit± voropetu½, mahiddhiko so bhagav± mah±nubh±vo”ti vutte devadatto “ala½, ±vuso, m± tva½ samaºa½ gotama½ j²vit± voropehi, ahameva samaºa½ gotama½ j²vit± voropess±m²”ti vatv± tath±gate gijjhak³µapabbatassa pacchimach±y±ya caªkamante saya½ gijjhak³µa½ pabbata½ abhiruhitv± yantavegena mahati½ sila½ pavijjhi, “im±ya sil±ya samaºa½ gotama½ j²vit± voropess±m²”ti. Atha na½ disv± devadatto cintesi– “samaºassa gotamassa r³pasobhaggappatta½ sar²ra½ disv± koci manussabh³to upasaªkamitu½ na sakkoti, rañño kho pana n±¼±giri n±ma hatth² caº¹o pharuso manussagh±tako buddhadhammasaªghaguºe na j±n±ti, so ta½ j²vitakkhaya½ p±pessat²”ti. So gantv± rañño tamattha½ ±rocesi. R±j± “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± hatth±cariya½ pakkos±petv± “samma, sve n±¼±giri½ matta½ katv± p±tova samaºena gotamena paµipannav²thiya½ vissajjeh²”ti ±ha. Devadattopi na½ “aññesu divasesu hatth² kittaka½ sura½ pivat²”ti pucchitv± “aµµha ghaµe, bhante”ti vutte “tena hi sve tva½ ta½ so¼asa ghaµe p±yetv± samaºena gotamena paµipannav²thiya½ abhimukha½ kareyy±s²”ti ±ha. Satth±pi “sve piº¹±ya na pavisiss±m²”ti avatv±va “aha½ sve n±¼±giri½ dametv± p±µih±riya½ katv± titthiye madditv± r±jagahe piº¹±ya acaritv±va bhikkhusaªghaparivuto nagar± nikkhamitv± ve¼uvanameva ±gamiss±mi, r±jagahav±sinopi bah³ni bhattabh±jan±ni gahetv± ve¼uvanameva ±gamissanti, sve vih±reyeva bhattagga½ bhavissat²”ti imin± k±raºena tesa½ adhiv±sesi. Saddh±sampann± manuss± “ajja kira buddhan±gassa tiracch±nan±gena saªg±mo bhavissati, an³pam±ya buddhal²l±ya n±¼±giridamana½ passiss±m±”ti p±s±dahammiyagehacchadan±d²ni abhiruhitv± aµµha½su. Asaddh± pana micch±diµµhik± “aya½ n±¼±giri caº¹o pharuso manussagh±tako buddh±d²na½ guºa½ na j±n±ti, so ajja samaºassa gotamassa suvaººavaººa½ sar²ra½ viddha½setv± j²vitakkhaya½ p±pessati, ajja pacc±mittassa piµµhi½ passiss±m±”ti p±s±d±d²su aµµha½su.
Hatth²pi bhagavanta½ ±gacchanta½ disv± manusse t±sento geh±ni viddha½sento sakaµ±ni sa½cuººento soº¹a½ uss±petv± pahaµµhakaººav±lo pabbato viya ajjhottharanto yena bhagav± ten±bhidh±vi. Ta½ ±gacchanta½ disv± bhikkh³ bhagavanta½ etadavocu½– “aya½, bhante, n±¼±giri caº¹o pharuso manussagh±tako ima½ raccha½ paµipanno, na kho pan±ya½ buddh±diguºa½ j±n±ti, paµikkamatu, bhante, bhagav±, paµikkamatu sugato”ti. M±, bhikkhave, bh±yittha, paµibalo aha½ n±¼±giri½ dametunti. Ath±yasm± s±riputto satth±ra½ y±ci– “bhante, pitu uppannakicca½ n±ma jeµµhaputtassa bh±ro, ahameva ta½ damem²”ti. Atha na½ satth±, “s±riputta, buddhabala½ n±ma añña½, s±vakabala½ añña½, tiµµha tvan”ti paµib±hi. Eva½ yebhuyyena as²ti mah±ther± y±ci½su. Satth± sabbepi paµib±hi. Atha ±yasm± ±nando satthari balavasinehena adhiv±setu½ asakkonto “aya½ hatth² paµhama½ ma½ m±ret³”ti tath±gatassatth±ya j²vita½ pariccajitv± gantv± satthu purato aµµh±si. Atha na½ satth± “apehi, ±nanda, m± me purato aµµh±s²”ti ±ha. “Bhante, aya½ hatth² caº¹o pharuso manussagh±tako kappuµµh±naggisadiso paµhama½ ma½ m±retv± pacch± tumh±ka½ santika½ ±gacchat³”ti thero avaca. Y±vatatiya½ vuccam±nopi tatheva aµµh±si na paµikkami. Atha na½ bhagav± iddhibalena paµikkam±petv± bhikkh³na½ antare µhapesi.
Tasmi½ khaºe ek± itth² n±¼±giri½ disv± maraºabhayabh²t± pal±yam±n± aªkena gahita½ d±raka½ hatthino ca tath±gatassa ca antare cha¹¹etv± pal±yi. Hatth² ta½ anubandhitv± nivattitv± d±rakassa santika½ agam±si. Tad± d±rako mah±rava½ ravi. Satth± n±¼±giri½ odissakamett±ya pharitv± sumadhura½ brahmassara½ nicch±retv± “ambho n±¼±giri ta½ so¼asa sur±ghaµe p±yetv± matta½ karont± na ‘añña½ gaºhissat²’ti kari½su, ‘ma½ gaºhissat²’ti pana kari½su, m± ak±raºena jaªgh±yo kilamento vicari, ito eh²”ti pakkosi. So satthu vacana½ sutv± akkh²ni umm²letv± bhagavato r³pasiri½ oloketv± paµiladdhasa½vego buddhatejena pacchinnasur±mado soº¹a½ olambento kaººe c±lento ±gantv± tath±gatassa p±desu pati. Atha na½ satth±, “n±¼±giri, tva½ tiracch±nahatth², aha½ buddhav±raºo, ito paµµh±ya m± caº¹o pharuso manussagh±tako bhava, sabbasattesu mettacitta½ paµilabh±”ti vatv± dakkhiºahattha½ pas±retv± kumbhe par±masitv±–
“M± kuñjara n±gam±sado, dukkho hi kuñjara n±gam±sado;
na hi n±gahatassa kuñjara, sugati hoti ito para½ yato.
“M± ca mado m± ca pam±do, na hi pamatt± sugati½ vajanti te;
tvaññeva tath± karissasi, yena tva½ sugati½ gamissas²”ti. (C³¼ava. 342)–

Tassa sakalasar²ra½ p²tiy± nirantara½ phuµa½ ahosi. Sace kira tiracch±nagato n±bhaviss±, sot±pattiphala½ adhigamiss±. Manuss± ta½ p±µih±riya½ disv± unnadi½su apphoµi½su, sañj±tasomanass± n±n±bharaº±ni khipi½su, t±ni hatthissa sar²ra½ paµicch±dayi½su. Tato paµµh±ya n±¼±giri dhanap±lako n±ma j±to. Tasmi½ kho pana dhanap±lakasam±game catur±s²ti p±ºasahass±ni amata½ pivi½su. Satth± dhanap±laka½ pañcasu s²lesu patiµµh±pesi. So soº¹±ya bhagavato p±de pa½s³ni gahetv± upari muddhani ±kiritv± paµikuµitova paµikkamitv± dassan³pac±re µhito dasabala½ vanditv± nivattitv± hatthis±la½ p±visi. Tato paµµh±ya dantasudanto hutv± na kañci viheµheti. Satth± nipphannamanoratho “yehi ya½ dhana½ khitta½, tesaññeva ta½ hot³”ti adhiµµh±ya “ajja may± mahanta½ p±µih±riya½ kata½, imasmi½ nagare piº¹±ya caraºa½ appaµir³pan”ti titthiye madditv± bhikkhusaªghaparivuto jayappatto viya khattiyo nagar± nikkhamitv± ve¼uvanameva gato. Nagarav±sino bahu½ annap±nakh±dan²ya½ ±d±ya vih±ra½ gantv± mah±d±na½ pavattayi½su.
Ta½ divasa½ s±yanhasamaye dhammasabha½ p³retv± sannisinn± bhikkh³ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½– “±vuso, ±yasmat± ±nandena tath±gatassatth±ya attano j²vita½ pariccajantena dukkara½ kata½, n±¼±giri½ disv± satth±r± tikkhattu½ paµib±hiyam±nopi n±pagato, aho dukkarak±rako, ±vuso, ±yasm± ±nando”ti. Satth± “±nandassa guºakath± pavattati, gantabba½ may± etth±”ti gandhakuµito nikkhamitv± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi ±nando tiracch±nayoniya½ nibbattopi mamatth±ya j²vita½ pariccajiyev±”ti vatv± tehi y±cito at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te mahi½sakaraµµhe s±galanagare s±galo n±ma r±j± dhammena rajja½ k±resi. Tad± nagarato avid³re ekasmi½ nes±dag±make aññataro nes±do p±sehi sakuºe bandhitv± nagare vikkiºanto j²vika½ kappesi. Nagarato ca avid³re ±vaµµato dv±dasayojano m±nusiyo n±ma padumasaro ahosi pañcavaººapadumasañchanno. Tattha n±nappak±ro sakuºasaªgho otari. So nes±do tattha aniy±mena p±se o¹¹esi. Tasmi½ k±le dhataraµµho ha½sar±j± channavutiha½sasahassapariv±ro cittak³µapabbate suvaººaguh±ya½ vasati, sumukho n±massa sen±pati ahosi. Athekadivasa½ tato ha½say³th± katipay± suvaººaha½s± m±nusiya½ sara½ gantv± pah³tagocare tasmi½ yath±sukha½ vicaritv± suhit± cittak³µa½ ±gantv± dhataraµµhassa ±rocesu½– “mah±r±ja, manussapathe m±nusiyo n±ma padumasaro sampannagocaro, tattha gocara½ gaºhitu½ gacch±m±”ti. So “manussapatho n±ma s±saªko sappaµibhayo, m± vo ruccitth±”ti paµikkhipitv±pi tehi punappuna½ vuccam±no “sace tumh±ka½ ruccati, gacch±m±”ti sapariv±ro ta½ sara½ agam±si. So ±k±s± otaranto p±da½ p±se pavesentoyeva otari. Athassa p±so p±da½ ayapaµµakena ka¹¹hanto viya ±bandhitv± gaºhi. Athassa “chindiss±mi nan”ti ±ka¹¹hantassa paµhamav±re camma½ chijji, dutiyav±re ma½sa½ chijji, tatiyav±re nh±ru chijji, p±so aµµhi½ ±hacca aµµh±si, lohita½ pagghari, balavavedan± pavatti½su.
So cintesi– “sac±ha½ baddharava½ raviss±mi, ñ±tak± me utrast± hutv± gocara½ aggaºhitv± ch±tajjhatt±va pal±yant± dubbalat±ya mah±samudde patissant²”ti. So vedana½ adhiv±setv± ñ±t²na½ y±vadattha½ caritv± ha½s±na½ k²¼anak±le mahantena saddena baddharava½ ravi. Ta½ sutv± te ha½s± maraºabhayatajjit± vaggavagg± hutv± cittak³µ±bhimukh± pakkami½su. Tesu pakkantesu sumukho ha½sasen±pati “kacci nu kho ida½ bhaya½ mah±r±jassa uppanna½, j±niss±mi nan”ti vegena pakkhanditv± purato gacchantassa ha½sagaºassa antare mah±satta½ adisv± majjhimaha½sagaºa½ vicini, tatthapi adisv± pacchimaha½sagaºa½ vicini, tatthapi adisv± “nissa½saya½ tasseveda½ bhaya½ uppannan”ti nivattitv± ±gacchanto mah±satta½ p±se baddha½ lohitamakkhita½ dukkh±tura½ paªkapiµµhe nipanna½ disv± “m± bh±yi, mah±r±ja, aha½ mama j²vita½ pariccajitv± tumhe p±sato mocess±m²”ti vadanto otaritv± mah±satta½ ass±sentova paªkapiµµhe nis²di.
