Tañhi bhikkhu½ satth± “sacca½ kira tva½ ukkaºµhitos²”ti pucchitv± “sacca½, bhante”ti vutte “bhikkhu aya½ nand²r±go t±disa½ ki½ n±ma n±lolessati, na hi sineru-ubb±hanakav±to s±mante pur±ºapaººassa lajjati, pubbe satta vassasat±ni antokilesasamud±c±ra½ v±retv± viharante visuddhasattepesa ±lolesiyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto paccantapadese morasakuºiy± kucchimhi paµisandhi½ aggahesi. Gabbhe parip±kagate m±t± gocarabh³miya½ aº¹a½ p±tetv± pakk±mi. Aº¹añca n±ma m±tu arogabh±ve sati aññasmi½ d²ghaj±tik±diparipanthe ca avijjam±ne na nassati. Tasm± ta½ aº¹a½ kaºik±ramakula½ viya suvaººavaººa½ hutv± pariºatak±le attano dhammat±ya bhijji, suvaººavaººo moracch±po nikkhami. Tassa dve akkh²ni jiñjuk±phalasadis±ni, tuº¹a½ pav±¼avaººa½, tisso rattar±jiyo g²va½ parikkhipitv± piµµhimajjhena agama½su. So vayappatto bhaº¹asakaµamattasar²ro abhir³po ahosi. Ta½ sabbe n²lamor± sannipatitv± r±j±na½ katv± pariv±rayi½su.
So ekadivasa½ udakasoº¹iya½ p±n²ya½ pivanto attano r³pasampatti½ disv± cintesi “aha½ sabbamorehi atirekar³pasobho, sac±ha½ imehi saddhi½ manussapathe vasiss±mi, paripantho me uppajjissati, himavanta½ gantv± ekakova ph±sukaµµh±ne vasiss±m²”ti. So rattibh±ge moresu paµisall²nesu kañci aj±n±petv± uppatitv± himavanta½ pavisitv± tisso pabbatar±jiyo atikkamma catutth±ya pabbatar±jiy± ekasmi½ araññe padumasañchanno j±tassaro atthi, tassa avid³re eka½ pabbata½ niss±ya µhito mah±nigrodharukkho atthi, tassa s±kh±ya nil²yi. Athekasmi½ divase b±r±ºasirañño khem± n±ma aggamahes² pacc³sak±le supina½ passi. Evar³po supino ahosi– “suvaººavaººo moro dhamma½ deseti, s± s±dhuk±ra½ datv± dhamma½ suº±ti, moro dhamma½ desetv± uµµh±ya pakk±mi”. S± “morar±j± gacchati, gaºhatha nan”ti vadant²yeva pabujjhi, pabujjhitv± ca pana supinabh±va½ ñatv± “supinoti vutte r±j± na ±dara½ karissati, ‘doha¼o me’ti vutte karissat²”ti cintetv± doha¼in² viya hutv± nipajji. Atha na½ r±j± upasaªkamitv± pucchi “bhadde, ki½ te aph±sukan”ti. “Doha¼o me uppanno”ti. “Ki½ icchasi bhadde”ti? “Suvaººavaººassa morassa dhamma½ sotu½ dev±”ti. “Bhadde, kuto evar³pa½ mora½ lacch±m²”ti? “Deva, sace na labh±mi, j²vita½ me natth²”ti. “Bhadde, m± cintayi, sace katthaci atthi, labhissas²”ti r±j± na½ ass±setv± gantv± r±j±sane nisinno amacce pucchi “ambho, dev² suvaººavaººassa morassa dhamma½ sotuk±m±, mor± n±ma suvaººavaºº± hont²”ti? “Br±hmaº± j±nissanti dev±”ti.
R±j± br±hmaºe pakkos±petv± pucchi. Br±hmaº± evam±ha½su “mah±r±ja jalajesu macchakacchapakakkaµak±, thalajesu mig± ha½s± mor± tittir± ete tiracch±nagat± ca manuss± ca suvaººavaºº± hont²ti amh±ka½ lakkhaºamantesu ±gatan”ti. R±j± “ta½ mora½ niss±ya piyabhariy± me mat±”ti kujjhitv± kodhavasiko hutv± “himavante catutth±ya pabbatar±jiy± suvaººavaººo moro carati, tassa ma½sa½ kh±ditv± ajar± amar± hont²”ti suvaººapaµµe likh±petv± ta½ paµµa½ s±ramañj³s±ya½ µhapetv± k±lamak±si.

Eva½ cha r±japarivaµµ± gat±, cha luddaputt± himavanteyeva mat±. Sattamena pana raññ± pesito sattamo luddo “ajja ajjev±”ti satta sa½vacchar±ni bajjhitu½ asakkonto cintesi “ki½ nu kho imassa morar±jassa p±de p±sassa asañcaraºak±raºan”ti? Atha na½ pariggaºhanto s±ya½p±ta½ paritta½ karonta½ disv± “imasmi½ µh±ne añño moro natthi, imin± brahmac±rin± bhavitabba½, brahmacariy±nubh±vena ceva paritt±nubh±vena cassa p±do p±se na bajjhat²”ti nayato pariggahetv± paccantajanapada½ gantv± eka½ mori½ bandhitv± yath± s± acchar±ya pahaµ±ya vassati, p±ºimhi pahaµe naccati, eva½ sikkh±petv± ±d±ya gantv± bodhisattassa parittakaraºato puretarameva p±sa½ o¹¹etv± acchara½ paharitv± mori½ vass±pesi. Puna cintesi “aya½ n±gabalo th±masampanno mayi upasaªkamante ‘esa ma½ m±retu½ ±gacchat²’ti maraºabhayatajjito phandam±no p±da½ v± pakkha½ v± bhindeyya, anupagantv± pana paµicchanne µhatv± khurappenassa p±sa½ chindiss±mi, tato sayameva yath±ruciy± gamissat²”ti. So paµicchanne µhatv± dhanu½ ±ropetv± khurappa½ sannayhitv± ±ka¹¹hi. p±sañca ty±ha½ adhip±tayissa½, yath±sukha½ gacchatu morar±j±”ti.

Teyeva aya½ “arahanto”ti maññam±no evam±ha.

Tattha imass±ti ki½ nu te imassa lokassa santi, ud±hu paralokass±ti. Bhummatthe v± eta½ s±mivacana½. Katha½ nu teti etesu vim±nesu candimas³riyadevaputte katha½ nu kathenti, ki½ atth²ti kathenti, ud±hu natth²ti, ki½ v± dev±, ud±hu manuss±ti?

akkh±hi me morar±jetamattha½, yath± aha½ no niraya½ pateyyan”ti.
Tattha dattupaññattañc±ti d±nañca dattupaññatta½ n±ma katha½ bhaveyy±ti attho. Katha½karoti katarakamma½ karonto. Kintikaroti kena k±raºena karonto aha½ niraya½ na gaccheyya½. Itar±ni tasseva vevacan±ni.

155. “Ye keci atthi samaº± pathaby±, k±s±yavatth± anag±riy± te;
p±tova piº¹±ya caranti k±le, vik±lacariy± virat± hi santo.

te te pavakkhanti yath±paj±na½, imassa lokassa parassa catthan”ti.
Tattha santoti santap±p± paº¹it± paccekabuddh±. Yath±paj±nanti te tuyha½ attano paj±nananiy±mena vakkhanti, kaªkha½ te chinditv± kathessanti. Imassa lokassa parassa catthanti imin± n±ma kammena manussaloke nibbattanti, imin± devaloke, imin± niray±d²s³ti eva½ imassa ca parassa ca lokassa attha½ ±cikkhissanti, te pucch±ti.
Evañca pana vatv± nirayabhayena tajjesi. So pana p³ritap±ram² paccekabodhisatto s³riyarasmisamphassa½ oloketv± µhita½ pariºatapaduma½ viya parip±kagatañ±ºo vicarati. So tassa dhammakatha½ suºanto µhitapadeneva µhito saªkh±re pariggaºhitv± tilakkhaºa½ sammasanto paccekabodhiñ±ºa½ paµivijjhi. Tassa paµivedho ca mah±sattassa p±sato mokkho ca ekakkhaºeyeva ahosi. Paccekabuddho sabbakilese pad±letv± bhavapariyante µhitova ud±na½ ud±nanto g±tham±ha–
157. “Taca½va jiººa½ urago pur±ºa½, paº¹³pal±sa½ harito dumova;
esappah²no mama luddabh±vo, jah±maha½ luddakabh±vamajj±”ti.
Tassattho– yath± jiººa½ pur±ºa½ taca½ urago jahati, yath± ca harito sampajjam±nan²lapatto dumo katthaci µhita½ paº¹upal±sa½ jahati, eva½ ahampi ajja luddabh±va½ d±ruºabh±va½ jahitv± µhito, so d±ni esa pah²no mama luddabh±vo, s±dhu vata jah±maha½ luddakabh±vamajj±ti. Jah±mahanti pajahi½ ahanti attho.
So ima½ ud±na½ ud±netv± “aha½ t±va sabbakilesabandhanehi mutto, nivesane pana me bandhitv± µhapit± bah³ sakuº± atthi, te katha½ mocess±m²”ti cintetv± mah±satta½ pucchi– “morar±ja, nivesane me bah³ sakuº± baddh± atthi, te katha½ mocess±m²”ti? Paccekabuddhatopi sabbaññubodhisatt±naññeva up±yapariggahañ±ºa½ mahantatara½ hoti, tena na½ ±ha “ya½ vo maggena kilese khaº¹etv± paccekabodhiñ±ºa½ paµividdha½, ta½ ±rabbha saccakiriya½ karotha, sakalajambud²pe bandhanagato satto n±ma na bhavissat²”ti. So bodhisattena dinnanayadv±re µhatv± saccakiriya½ karonto g±tham±ha–
158. “Ye c±pi me sakuº± atthi baddh±, sat±ninek±ni nivesanasmi½;
tesampaha½ j²vitamajja dammi, mokkhañca te patt± saka½ niketan”ti.
Tattha mokkhañca te patt±ti sv±ha½ mokkha½ patto paccekabodhiñ±ºa½ paµivijjhitv± µhito, te satte j²vitad±nena anukamp±mi, etena saccena. Saka½ niketanti sabbepi te satt± attano attano vasanaµµh±na½ gacchant³ti vadati.
Athassa saccakiriy±samak±lameva sabbe bandhan± muccitv± tuµµhirava½ ravant± sakaµµh±nameva agami½su. Tasmi½ khaºe tesa½ tesa½ gehesu bi¼±le ±di½ katv± sakalajambud²pe bandhanagato satto n±ma n±hosi. Paccekabuddho hattha½ ukkhipitv± s²sa½ par±masi. T±vadeva gihiliªga½ antaradh±yi, pabbajitaliªga½ p±turahosi. So saµµhivassikatthero viya ±kappasampanno aµµhaparikkh±radharo hutv± “tvameva mama patiµµh± ahos²”ti morar±jassa añjali½ paggayha padakkhiºa½ katv± ±k±se uppatitv± nandam³lakapabbh±ra½ agam±si. Morar±j±pi yaµµhi-aggato uppatitv± gocara½ gahetv± attano vasanaµµh±na½ gato. Id±ni luddassa satta vass±ni p±sahatthassa caritv±pi morar±j±na½ niss±ya dukkh± muttabh±va½ pak±sento satth± os±nag±tham±ha–
159. “Luddo car² p±sahattho araññe, b±dhetu mor±dhipati½ yasassi½;
bandhitv± mor±dhipati½ yasassi½, dukkh± sa pamucci yath±ha½ pamutto”ti.
Tattha b±dhet³ti m±retu½, ayameva v± p±µho. Bandhitv±ti bandhitv± µhitassa dhammakatha½ sutv± paµiladdhasa½vego hutv±ti attho. Yath±hanti yath± aha½ sayambhuñ±ºena mutto, evameva sopi muttoti.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± sacc±ni pak±setv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi, saccapariyos±ne ukkaºµhitabhikkhu arahatta½ p±puºi. Tad± morar±j± ahameva ahosinti.
