Khar±jin± jaµil± paªkadant±ti ida½ satth± jetavane viharanto eka½ kuhakabhikkhu½ ±rabbha kathesi. So hi niyy±nikas±sane pabbajitv±pi catupaccayatth±ya tividha½ kuhakavatthu½ p³resi. Athassa aguºa½ pak±sent± bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “±vuso, asuko n±ma bhikkhu evar³pe niyy±nikas±sane pabbajitv± kuhana½ niss±ya j²vika½ kappet²”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepesa kuhakoyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto tassa purohito ahosi paº¹ito byatto. So ekadivasa½ uyy±nak²¼a½ gato eka½ abhir³pa½ gaºika½ disv± paµibaddhacitto t±ya saddhi½ sa½v±sa½ kappesi. S± ta½ paµicca gabbha½ paµilabhi. Gabbhassa patiµµhitabh±va½ ñatv± ta½ ±ha– “s±mi, gabbho me patiµµhito, j±tak±le n±ma½ karont² assa ki½ n±ma½ karom²”ti? So vayappatto m±tara½ pucchi– “amma, ko me pit±”ti? “Purohito t±t±”ti. “Yadi eva½ vede uggaºhiss±m²”ti m±tu hatthato muddikañca ±cariyabh±gañca gahetv± takkasila½ gantv± dis±p±mokkh±cariyassa santike sippa½ uggaºhanto eka½ t±pasagaºa½ disv± “imesa½ santike varasippa½ bhavissati, ta½ uggaºhiss±m²”ti sippalobhena pabbajitv± tesa½ vattapaµivatta½ katv± “±cariy± ma½ tumh±ka½ j±nanasippa½ sikkh±peth±”ti ±ha. Atha ne so ±ha– “m±ris±, tumhe nicca½ vanam³laphal±h±r± araññeva vasatha, manussapatha½ kasm± na gacchath±”ti? “M±risa, manuss± n±ma mah±d±na½ datv± anumodana½ k±r±penti, dhammi½ katha½ bhaº±penti, pañha½ pucchanti, maya½ tena bhayena tattha na gacch±m±”ti. “M±ris±, sacepi cakkavattir±j± bhavissati, mana½ gahetv± kathana½ n±ma mayha½ bh±ro, tumhe m± bh±yath±”ti vatv± tehi saddhi½ c±rika½ caram±no anupubbena b±r±ºasi½ patv± r±juyy±ne vasitv± punadivase sabbehi saddhi½ dv±rag±me bhikkh±ya cari, manuss± mah±d±na½ ada½su. T±pas± punadivase nagara½ pavisi½su manuss± mah±d±na½ ada½su. Udd±lakat±paso d±n±numodana½ karoti, maªgala½ vadati, pañha½ vissajjeti, manuss± pas²ditv± bahupaccaye ada½su. Sakalanagara½ “paº¹ito gaºasatth± dhammikat±paso ±gato”ti saªkhubhi, ta½ raññopi kathayi½su.
R±j± “kuhi½ vasat²”ti pucchitv± “uyy±ne”ti sutv± “s±dhu ajja tesa½ dassan±ya gamiss±m²”ti ±ha. Eko puriso gantv± “r±j± kira vo passitu½ ±gacchissat²”ti udd±lakassa kathesi. Sopi isigaºa½ ±mantetv± “m±ris±, r±j± kira ±gamissati, issare n±ma ekadivasa½ ±r±dhetv± y±vaj²va½ ala½ hot²”ti. “Ki½ pana k±tabba½ ±cariy±”ti? So “eka½sena tva½ udd±lakos²”ti vutte “±m±”ti vatv± “may± te m±tu saññ±ºa½ dinna½, ta½ kuhin”ti vutte “ida½ br±hmaº±”ti muddika½ tassa hatthe µhapesi. Br±hmaºo muddika½ sañj±nitv± nicchayena “tva½ br±hmaºadhamma½ paj±n±s²”ti vatv± br±hmaºadhamma½ pucchanto chaµµha½ g±tham±ha–
67. “Katha½ bho br±hmaºo hoti, katha½ bhavati keval²;
kathañca parinibb±na½, dhammaµµho kinti vuccat²”ti.

68. “Nira½katv± aggim±d±ya br±hmaºo, ±po siñca½ yaja½ usseti y³pa½;

Tattha nira½katv± aggim±d±y±ti nirantara½ katv± aggi½ gahetv± paricarati. ¾po siñca½ yaja½ usseti y³panti abhisecanakakamma½ karonto samm±p±sa½ v± v±japeyya½ v± niragga¼a½ v± yajanto suvaººay³pa½ uss±peti. Khem²ti khemappatto. Am±payi½s³ti teneva ca k±raºena dhamme µhita½ kathayi½su.

Evamev±ti manussesupi evameva ekacce aññ±ºabr±hmaº± ak±raºeneva c±tuvaººe suddhi½ paññ±penti, es± atth²ti m± gaºhi. Yad± ariyamaggena m±ºav± sujjhanti, tad± tehi paµividdha½ nibb±nadhamma½ j±nitv± subbat± s²lavant± paº¹itapuris± te saj±ti½ muñcanti. Nibb±nappattito paµµh±ya hi j±ti n±ma niratthak±ti.
Udd±lako pana pacc±haritu½ asakkonto appaµibh±nova nis²di. Atha br±hmaºo r±j±na½ ±ha– “sabbe ete, mah±r±ja, kuhak± sakalajambud²pe kohaññeneva n±senti, udd±laka½ uppabb±jetv± upapurohita½ karotha, sese uppabb±jetv± phalak±vudh±ni datv± sevake karoth±”ti. “S±dhu, ±cariy±”ti r±j± tath± k±resi. Te r±j±na½ upaµµhahant±va yath±kamma½ gat±.
