Athassa satth± parisamajjheyeva anumodana½ karonto “up±saka, mah± te paricc±go, aho dukkara½ tay± kata½, ayañhi d±nava½so n±ma por±ºakapaº¹it±na½ va½so, d±na½ n±ma gihin±pi pabbajiten±pi d±tabbameva. Por±ºakapaº¹it± pana pabbajitv± araññe vasant±pi aloºaka½ vidh³pana½ udakamattasitta½ k±rapaººa½ kh±dam±n±pi sampattay±cak±na½ y±vadattha½ datv± saya½ p²tisukhena y±payi½s³”ti vatv± “bhante, ida½ t±va sabbaparikkh±rad±na½ mah±janassa p±kaµa½, tumhehi vutta½ ap±kaµa½, ta½ no katheth±”ti tena y±cito at²ta½ ±hari. So tesa½ petakicc±ni k±retv± dhanavilokana½ karonto “asuko n±ma ettaka½ dhana½ saºµhapetv± at²to, asuko ettakan”ti vacana½ sutv± sa½viggam±naso hutv± “ida½ dhanameva paññ±yati, na dhanassa sa½h±rak±, sabbe ima½ dhana½ pah±yeva gat±, aha½ pana ta½ ±d±ya gamiss±m²”ti bhagini½ pakkos±petv± “tva½ ima½ dhana½ paµipajj±h²”ti ±ha “Tumh±ka½ pana ko ajjh±sayo”ti? “Pabbajituk±momh²”ti. “Bh±tika, aha½ tumhehi cha¹¹ita½ khe¼a½ na siras± sampaµicch±mi, na me imin± attho, ahampi pabbajiss±m²”ti. So r±j±na½ ±pucchitv± bheri½ car±pesi “dhanena atthik± akittipaº¹itassa geha½ ±gacchant³”ti. Tassa pabbajitak±lato paµµh±ya bahug±manigamar±jadh±niv±sino pabbaji½su. Mah±pariv±ro ahosi, mah±l±bhasakk±ro nibbatti, buddhupp±dak±lo viya pavatti. Atha mah±satto “aya½ l±bhasakk±ro mah±, pariv±ropi mahanto, may± ekakeneva viharitu½ vaµµat²”ti cintetv± avel±ya antamaso bhaginimpi aj±n±petv± ekakova nikkhamitv± anupubbena dami¼araµµha½ patv± k±v²rapaµµanasam²pe uyy±ne viharanto jh±n±bhiññ±yo nibbattesi. Tatr±pissa mah±l±bhasakk±ro uppajji. So ta½ jigucchitv± cha¹¹etv± ±k±sena gantv± n±gad²pasam²pe k±rad²pe otari. Tad± k±rad²po ahid²po n±ma ahosi. Athassa bhagin² bh±tara½ gavesam±n± anupubbena dami¼araµµha½ patv± ta½ adisv± tena vasitaµµh±neyeva vasi, jh±na½ pana nibbattetu½ n±sakkhi. Mah±satto appicchat±ya katthaci agantv± tassa rukkhassa phalak±le phal±ni kh±dati, pattak±le patt±ni udakasitt±ni kh±dati. Tassa s²latejena sakkassa paº¹ukambalasil±sana½ uºh±k±ra½ dassesi. Sakko “ko nu kho ma½ µh±n± c±vetuk±mo”ti ±vajjento akittipaº¹ita½ disv± “kimattha½ esa t±paso s²l±ni rakkhati, sakkatta½ nu kho pattheti, ud±hu añña½, v²mi½siss±mi na½. Ayañhi dukkhena j²vika½ kappesi, udakasitt±ni k±rapaºº±ni kh±dati, sace sakkatta½ pattheti, attano sittapatt±ni mayha½ dassati, no ce, na dassat²”ti br±hmaºavaººena tassa santika½ agam±si. Mah±satto ta½ disv± somanassappatto hutv± “l±bh± vata me, yoha½ y±caka½ pass±mi, ajja me manoratha½ matthaka½ p±petv± d±na½ dass±m²”ti pakkabh±janeneva ±d±ya gantv± “ida½ me d±na½ sabbaññutaññ±ºassa paccayo hot³”ti attano asesetv±va tassa bh±jane pakkhipi. Br±hmaºo ta½ gahetv± thoka½ gantv± antaradh±yi. Mah±sattopi tassa datv± puna apacitv± p²tisukheneva v²tin±metv± punadivase pacitv± tattheva paººas±ladv±re nis²di. Sakko puna br±hmaºavesena agam±si. Punapissa datv± mah±satto tatheva v²tin±mesi. Tatiyadivasepi tatheva datv± “aho me l±bh± vata, k±rapaºº±ni niss±ya mahanta½ puñña½ pasutan”ti somanassappatto tayo divase an±h±rat±ya dubbalopi sam±no majjhanhikasamaye paººas±lato nikkhamitv± d±na½ ±vajjento paººas±ladv±re nis²di. Sakkopi cintesi “aya½ br±hmaºo tayo divase nir±h±ro hutv± eva½ dubbalopi d±na½ dento tuµµhacittova deti, cittassa aññathattampi natthi, aha½ ima½ ‘ida½ n±ma patthetv± det²’ti na j±n±mi, pucchitv± ajjh±sayamassa sutv± d±nak±raºa½ j±niss±m²”ti. Tattha ki½ patthayanti ki½ manussasampatti½ patthento, ud±hu sakkasampatti-±d²na½ aññataranti. Mah±satto ta½ sutv± sakkabh±vañcassa ñatv± “n±ha½ et± sampattiyo patthemi, sabbaññuta½ pana patthento tapokamma½ karom²”ti pak±setu½ dutiya½ g±tham±ha–

sammohamaraºa½ dukkha½, tasm± samm±mi v±sav±”ti.
Tattha tasm±ti yasm± punappuna½ j±ti khandh±na½ bhedana½ sammohamaraºañca dukkha½, tasm± yatthet±ni natthi, ta½ nibb±na½ patthento idha samm±m²ti eva½ attano nibb±najjh±sayata½ d²peti. Tattha yena j±ten±ti yena cittena j±tena kuddh± satt± p±ºavadh±d²na½ katatt± r±jadaº¹avasena visakh±dan±d²hi v± attano maraºavasena et±ni khett±d²ni j²yanti, so doso mayi na vaseyy±ti y±cati. Na suºeti asukaµµh±ne n±ma vasat²tipi imehi k±raºehi na suºeyya½. Ki½ nu te akaranti ki½ nu tava b±lena m±t± m±rit±, ud±hu tava pit±, añña½ v± pana te ki½ n±ma anattha½ b±lo akara½. Anaya½ nayat²ti ak±raºa½ “k±raºan”ti gaºh±ti, p±º±tip±t±d²ni katv± j²vika½ kappess±m²ti evar³p±ni anatthakamm±ni cinteti. Adhur±yanti saddh±dhuras²ladhurapaññ±dhuresu ayojetv± ayoge niyuñjati. Dunnayo seyyaso hot²ti dunnayova tassa seyyo hoti. Pañca duss²lakamm±ni sam±d±ya vattanameva seyyoti gaºh±ti, hitapaµipattiy± v± dunnayo hoti netu½ asakkuºeyyo. Sakko “s±dhu, bhante, ito paµµh±ya na te santika½ ±gamiss±m±”ti ta½ vanditv± kham±petv± pakk±mi. Mah±satto y±vaj²va½ tattheva vasanto brahmavih±re bh±vetv± brahmaloke nibbatti. Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± sakko anuruddho ahosi, akittipaº¹ito pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
