D³te te brahme p±hesinti ida½ satth± jetavane viharanto attano paññ±pasa½sana½ ±rabbha kathesi. Dhammasabh±ya½ bhikkh³ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “passatha, ±vuso, dasabalassa up±yakosalla½, nandassa sakyaputtassa acchar±gaºa½ dassetv± arahatta½ ad±si, c³¼apanthakassa pilotika½ datv± saha paµisambhid±hi arahatta½ ad±si, kamm±raputtassa paduma½ dassetv± arahatta½ ad±si, eva½ n±n±-up±yehi satte vinet²”ti Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, tath±gato id±neva ‘imin± ida½ hot²’ti up±yakusalo, pubbepi up±yakusaloyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente janapado ahirañño ahosi. So hi janapada½ p²¼etv± dhanameva sa½ka¹¹hi. Tad± bodhisatto k±sig±me br±hmaºakule nibbattitv± vayappatto takkasila½ gantv± “pacch± dhammena bhikkha½ caritv± ±cariyadhana½ ±hariss±m²”ti vatv± sippa½ paµµhapetv± niµµhitasippo anuyoga½ datv± “±cariya, tumh±ka½ dhana½ ±hariss±m²”ti ±pucchitv± nikkhamma janapade caranto dhammena samena pariyesitv± satta nikkhe labhitv± “±cariyassa dass±m²”ti gacchanto antar±magge gaªga½ otaritu½ n±va½ abhiruhi. Tassa tattha n±v±ya viparivattam±n±ya ta½ suvaººa½ udake pati. So cintesi “dullabha½ hirañña½, janapade puna ±cariyadhane pariyesiyam±ne papañco bhavissati, ya½n³n±ha½ gaªg±t²reyeva nir±h±ro nis²deyya½, tassa me nisinnabh±va½ anupubbena r±j± j±nissati, tato amacce pesessati, aha½ tehi saddhi½ na mantess±mi, tato r±j± saya½ ±gamissati, imin± up±yena tassa santike ±cariyadhana½ labhiss±m²”ti. So gaªg±t²re uttaris±µaka½ p±rupitv± yaññasutta½ bahi µhapetv± rajatapaµµavaººe v±lukatale suvaººapaµim± viya nis²di. Ta½ nir±h±ra½ nisinna½ disv± mah±jano “kasm± nisinnos²”ti pucchi, kassaci na kathesi. Punadivase dv±rag±mav±sino tassa tattha nisinnabh±va½ sutv± ±gantv± pucchi½su, tesampi na kathesi. Te tassa kilamatha½ disv± paridevant± pakkami½su. Tatiyadivase nagarav±sino ±gami½su, catutthadivase nagarato issarajan±, pañcamadivase r±japuris±. Chaµµhadivase r±j± amacce pesesi, tehipi saddhi½ na kathesi. Sattamadivase r±j± bhayaµµito hutv± tassa santika½ gantv± pucchanto paµhama½ g±tham±ha–

tesa½ puµµho na by±k±si, dukkha½ guyhamata½ nu te”ti.
Tattha dukkha½ guyhamata½ nu teti ki½ nu kho, br±hmaºa, ya½ tava dukkha½ uppanna½, ta½ te guyhameva mata½, na aññassa ±cikkhitabbanti.
Ta½ sutv± mah±satto “mah±r±ja, dukkha½ n±ma haritu½ samatthasseva ±cikkhitabba½, na aññass±”ti vatv± satta g±th± abh±si–
55. “Sace te dukkhamuppajje, k±s²na½ raµµhava¹¹hana;
m± kho na½ tassa akkh±hi, yo ta½ dukkh± na mocaye.
56. “Yo tassa dukkhaj±tassa, ekaªgamapi bh±gaso;
vippamoceyya dhammena, k±ma½ tassa pavedaya.
57. “Suvij±na½ siªg±l±na½, sakuº±nañca vassita½;
manussavassita½ r±ja, dubbij±natara½ tato.
58. “Api ce maññat² poso, ñ±ti mitto sakh±ti v±;
yo pubbe sumano hutv±, pacch± sampajjate diso.
59. “Yo attano dukkhaman±nupuµµho, pavedaye jantu ak±lar³pe;
±nandino tassa bhavanti mitt±, hitesino tassa dukh² bhavanti.
60. “K±lañca ñatv±na tath±vidhassa, medh±vina½ ekamana½ viditv±;
akkheyya tibb±ni parassa dh²ro, saºha½ gira½ atthavati½ pamuñce.
61. “Sace ca jaññ± avisayhamattano, na te hi mayha½ sukh±gam±ya;
ekova tibb±ni saheyya dh²ro, sacca½ hirottappamapekkham±no”ti.
Tattha uppajjeti sace tava uppajjeyya. M± akkh±h²ti m± kathehi. Dubbij±natara½ tatoti tato tiracch±nagatavassitatopi dubbij±natara½, tasm± tathato aj±nitv± haritu½ asamatthassa attano dukkha½ na kathetabbamev±ti. Api ceti g±th± vuttatth±va. An±nupuµµhoti punappuna½ puµµho. Pavedayeti katheti. Ak±lar³peti ak±le. K±lanti attano guyhassa kathanak±la½. Tath±vidhass±ti paº¹itapurisa½ attan± saddhi½ ekamana½ viditv± tath±vidhassa ±cikkheyya. Tibb±n²ti dukkh±ni.
Saceti yadi attano dukkha½ avisayha½ attano v± paresa½ v± purisak±rena atekiccha½ j±neyya. Te h²ti te eva lokapaveºik±, aµµhalokadhamm±ti attho. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– atha aya½ lokapaveº² na mayha½ eva sukh±gam±ya uppann±, aµµhahi lokadhammehi parimutto n±ma natthi, eva½ sante sukhameva patthentena parassa dukkh±ropana½ n±ma na yutta½, neta½ hirottappasampannena kattabba½, atthi ca me hir² ottappanti sacca½ sa½vijjam±na½ attani hirottappa½ apekkham±nova aññassa an±rocetv± ekova tibb±ni saheyya dh²roti.

62. “Aha½ raµµhe vicaranto, nigame r±jadh±niyo;
bhikkham±no mah±r±ja, ±cariyassa dhanatthiko.
63. “Gahapat² r±japurise, mah±s±le ca br±hmaºe;
alattha½ satta nikkh±ni, suvaººassa jan±dhipa;
te me naµµh± mah±r±ja, tasm± soc±maha½ bhusa½.
64. “Puris± te mah±r±ja, manas±nuvicintit±;
n±la½ dukkh± pamocetu½, tasm± tesa½ na by±hari½.
65. “Tvañca kho me mah±r±ja, manas±nuvicintito;
ala½ dukkh± pamocetu½, tasm± tuyha½ pavedayin”ti.
Tattha bhikkham±noti ete gahapati-±dayo y±cam±no. Te meti te satta nikkh± mama gaªga½ tarantassa naµµh±, gaªg±ya½ patit±. Puris± teti mah±r±ja, tava d³tapuris±. Anuvicintit±ti “n±la½ ime ma½ dukkh± mocetun”ti may± ñ±t±. Tasm±ti tena k±raºena tesa½ attano dukkha½ n±cikkhi½. Pavedayinti kathesi½.
R±j± tassa dhammakatha½ sutv± “m± cintayi, br±hmaºa, aha½ te ±cariyadhana½ dass±m²”ti dviguºadhanamad±si. Tamattha½ pak±sento satth± os±nag±tham±ha–
66. “Tass±d±si pasannatto, k±s²na½ raµµhava¹¹hano;
j±tar³pamaye nikkhe, suvaººassa catuddas±”ti.
Tattha j±tar³pamayeti te suvaººassa catuddasa nikkhe j±tar³pamayeyeva ad±si, na yassa v± tassa v± suvaººass±ti attho.
Mah±satto rañño ov±da½ datv± ±cariyassa dhana½ datv± d±n±d²ni puññ±ni katv± r±j±pi tassov±de µhito dhammena rajja½ k±retv± ubhopi yath±kamma½ gat±.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi tath±gato up±yakusaloyev±”ti vatv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± r±j± ±nando ahosi, ±cariyo s±riputto, br±hmaºam±ºavo pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
