Tad± bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “±vuso, devadatto ±cariya½ paccakkh±ya mah±vin±sa½ patto, av²cimah±niraye nibbatto”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi devadatto ±cariya½ paccakkh±ya mah±vin±sa½ pattoyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari. At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente tassa purohitakula½ ahiv±tarogena vinassi. Ekova putto bhitti½ bhinditv± pal±to. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± tassa manta½ datv± evam±ha– “t±ta, anagghoya½ manto, tava ima½ niss±ya mah±l±bhasakk±ro bhavissati, raññ± v± r±jamah±mattena v± ‘ko te ±cariyo’ti puµµhak±le m± ma½ nig³hittho, sace hi ‘caº¹±lassa me santik± manto gahito’ti lajjanto ‘br±hmaºamah±s±lo me ±cariyo’ti kathessasi, imassa mantassa phala½ na labhissas²”ti. So “ki½ k±raº± ta½ nig³hiss±mi, kenaci puµµhak±le tumheyeva kathess±m²”ti vatv± ta½ vanditv± caº¹±lag±mato nikkhamitv± manta½ v²ma½sitv± anupubbena b±r±ºasi½ patv± amb±ni vikkiºitv± bahu½ dhana½ labhi. Athekadivasa½ uyy±nap±lo tassa hatthato amba½ kiºitv± rañño ad±si. R±j± ta½ paribhuñjitv± “kuto samma, tay± evar³pa½ amba½ laddhan”ti pucchi. Deva, eko m±ºavo ak±la-ambaphal±ni ±netv± vikkiº±ti, tato me gahitanti. Tena hi “ito paµµh±ya idheva amb±ni ±harat³”ti na½ vadeh²ti. So tath± ak±si. M±ºavopi tato paµµh±ya amb±ni r±jakula½ harati. Atha raññ± “upaµµhaha man”ti vutte r±j±na½ upaµµhahanto bahu½ dhana½ labhitv± anukkamena viss±siko j±to. Atha na½ ekadivasa½ r±j± pucchi “m±ºava, kuto ak±le eva½ vaººagandharasasampann±ni amb±ni labhasi, ki½ te n±go v± supaººo v± devo v± koci deti, ud±hu mantabala½ etan”ti? “Na me mah±r±ja, koci deti, anaggho pana me manto atthi, tasseva balan”ti. “Tena hi mayampi te ekadivasa½ mantabala½ daµµhuk±m±”ti. “S±dhu, deva, dassess±m²”ti. R±j± punadivase tena saddhi½ uyy±na½ gantv± “dasseh²”ti ±ha. So “s±dh³”ti ambarukkha½ upagantv± sattapadamatthake µhito manta½ parivattetv± rukkha½ udakena pahari. Taªkhaºaññeva ambarukkho heµµh± vuttaniy±meneva phala½ gahetv± mah±megho viya ambavassa½ vassi. Mah±jano s±dhuk±ra½ ad±si, celukkhep± pavatti½su. R±j± ambaphal±ni kh±ditv± tassa bahu½ dhana½ datv± “m±ºavaka, evar³po te acchariyamanto kassa santike gahito”ti pucchi. M±ºavo “sac±ha½ ‘caº¹±lassa santike’ti vakkh±mi, lajjitabbaka½ bhavissati, mañca garahissanti, manto kho pana me paguºo, id±ni na nassissati, dis±p±mokkha½ ±cariya½ apadis±m²”ti cintetv± mus±v±da½ katv± “takkasil±ya½ dis±p±mokkh±cariyassa santike gahito me”ti vadanto ±cariya½ paccakkh±si. Taªkhaºaññeva manto antaradh±yi. R±j± somanassaj±to ta½ ±d±ya nagara½ pavisitv± punadivase “amb±ni kh±diss±m²”ti uyy±na½ gantv± maªgalasil±paµµe nis²ditv± m±ºava, amb±ni ±har±ti ±ha. So “s±dh³”ti amba½ upagantv± sattapadamatthake µhito “manta½ parivattess±m²”ti mante anupaµµhahante antarahitabh±va½ ñatv± lajjito aµµh±si. R±j± “aya½ pubbe parisamajjheyeva amb±ni ±haritv± amh±ka½ deti, ghanameghavassa½ viya ambavassa½ vass±peti, id±ni thaddho viya µhito, ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti cintetv± ta½ pucchanto paµhama½ g±tham±ha–
1. “Ah±si me ambaphal±ni pubbe, aº³ni th³l±ni ca brahmac±ri;
teheva mantehi na d±ni tuyha½, dumapphal± p±tubhavanti brahme”ti.
Tattha ah±s²ti ±hari. Dumapphal±ti rukkhaphal±ni. Ta½ sutv± m±ºavo “sace ‘ajja ambaphala½ na gaºh±m²’ti vakkh±mi, r±j± me kujjhissati, mus±v±dena na½ vañcess±m²”ti dutiya½ g±tham±ha–
2. “Nakkhattayoga½ paµim±nay±mi, khaºa½ muhuttañca mante na passa½;
nakkhattayogañca khaºañca laddh±, addh± harissambaphala½ pah³tan”ti.
Tattha addh±harissambaphalanti addh± ambaphala½ ±hariss±mi. R±j± “aya½ aññad± nakkhattayoga½ na vadati, ki½ nu kho etan”ti pucchanto dve g±th± abh±si–
3. “Nakkhattayoga½ na pure abh±ºi, khaºa½ muhutta½ na pure asa½si;
saya½ har² ambaphala½ pah³ta½, vaººena gandhena rasenupeta½.
4. “Mant±bhijappena pure hi tuyha½, dumapphal± p±tubhavanti brahme;
sv±jja na p±resi jappampi manta½, aya½ so ko n±ma tavajja dhammo”ti.
Tattha na p±res²ti na sakkosi. Jappamp²ti jappantopi parivattentopi. Aya½ soti ayameva so tava sabh±vo ajja ko n±ma j±toti. Ta½ sutv± m±ºavo “na sakk± r±j±na½ mus±v±dena vañcetu½, sacepi me sabh±ve kathite ±ºa½ kareyya, karotu, sabh±vameva kathess±m²”ti cintetv± dve g±th± abh±si–
5. “Caº¹±laputto mama sampad±si, dhammena mante pakatiñca sa½si;
m± cassu me pucchito n±magotta½, guyhittho attha½ vijaheyya manto.
6. “Soha½ janindena janamhi puµµho, makkh±bhibh³to alika½ abh±ºi½;
‘mant± ime br±hmaºass±’ti micch±, pah²namanto kapaºo rud±m²”ti.
Tattha dhammen±ti samena k±raºena appaµicch±detv±va ad±si. Pakatiñca sa½s²ti “m± me pucchito n±magotta½ guyhittho, sace g³hasi mant± te nassissant²”ti tesa½ nassanapakatiñca mayha½ sa½si. Br±hmaºass±ti micch±ti “br±hmaºassa santike may± ime mant± gahit±”ti micch±ya abhaºi½, tena me te mant± naµµh±, sv±ha½ pah²namanto id±ni kapaºo rud±m²ti. Ta½ sutv± r±j± “aya½ p±padhammo evar³pa½ ratanamanta½ na olokesi, evar³pasmiñhi uttamaratanamante laddhe j±ti ki½ karissat²”ti kujjhitv± tassa garahanto–
7. “Eraº¹± pucimand± v±, atha v± p±libhaddak±;
madhu½ madhutthiko vinde, so hi tassa dumuttamo.
8. “Khattiy± br±hmaº± vess±, sudd± caº¹±lapukkus±;
yamh± dhamma½ vij±neyya, so hi tassa naruttamo.
9. “Imassa daº¹añca vadhañca datv±, gale gahetv± khalay±tha jamma½;
yo uttamattha½ kasirena laddha½, m±n±tim±nena vin±sayitth±”ti.–

Tattha madhutthikoti madhu-atthiko puriso araññe madhu½ olokento etesa½ rukkh±na½ yato madhu½ labhati, sova dumo tassa dumuttamo n±ma. Tatheva khattiy±d²su yamh± puris± dhamma½ k±raºa½ yutta½ attha½ vij±neyya, sova tassa uttamo naro n±ma. Imassa daº¹añc±ti imassa p±padhammassa sabbassaharaºadaº¹añca ve¼upesik±d²hi piµµhicamma½ upp±µetv± vadhañca datv± ima½ jamma½ gale gahetv± khalay±tha, khalik±ratta½ p±petv± niddhamatha nikka¹¹hatha, ki½ imin± idha vasanten±ti. R±japuris± tath± katv± “tav±cariyassa santika½ gantv± ta½ ±r±dhetv±va sace puna mante labhissasi, idha ±gaccheyy±si, no ce, ima½ disa½ m± olokeyy±s²”ti ta½ nibbisayamaka½su. Atha na½ ±gacchanta½ disv± mah±satto bhariya½ ±mantetv± “bhadde, passa ta½ p±padhamma½ parih²namanta½ puna ±gacchantan”ti ±ha. So mah±satta½ upasaªkamitv± vanditv± ekamanta½ nisinno “ki½k±raº± ±gatos²”ti puµµho “±cariya, mus±v±da½ katv± ±cariya½ paccakkhitv± mah±vin±sa½ pattomh²”ti vatv± accaya½ dassetv± puna mante y±canto–
10. “Yath± sama½ maññam±no pateyya, sobbha½ guha½ naraka½ p³tip±da½;
rajj³ti v± akkame kaºhasappa½, andho yath± jotimadhiµµhaheyya;
evampi ma½ ta½ khalita½ sapañña, pah²namantassa punappad±h²”ti.– G±tham±ha.
Tattha yath± samanti yath± puriso ida½ sama½ µh±nanti maññam±no sobbha½ v± guha½ v± bh³miy± phalitaµµh±nasaªkh±ta½ naraka½ v± p³tip±da½ v± pateyya. P³tip±doti himavantapadese mah±rukkhe sussitv± mate tassa m³lesu p³tikesu j±tesu tasmi½ µh±ne mah±-±v±µo hoti, tassa n±ma½. Jotimadhiµµhaheyy±ti aggi½ akkameyya. Evamp²ti eva½ ahampi paññ±cakkhuno abh±v± andho tumh±ka½ visesa½ aj±nanto tumhesu khalito, ta½ ma½ khalita½ viditv± sapañña ñ±ºasampanna pah²namantassa mama punapi deth±ti. Atha na½ ±cariyo “t±ta, ki½ kathesi, andho hi saññ±ya dinn±ya sobbh±d²ni pariharati, may± paµhamameva tava kathita½, id±ni kimattha½ mama santika½ ±gatos²”ti vatv±–
11. “Dhammena manta½ tava sampad±si½, tuvampi dhammena paµiggahesi;
pakatimpi te attamano asa½si½, dhamme µhita½ ta½ na jaheyya manto.
12. “Yo b±la-manta½ kasirena laddha½, ya½ dullabha½ ajja manussaloke;
kiñc±pi laddh± j²vitu½ appapañño, vin±say² alika½ bh±sam±no.
13. “B±lassa m³¼hassa akataññuno ca, mus± bhaºantassa asaññatassa;
mante maya½ t±disake na dema, kuto mant± gaccha na mayha½ ruccas²”ti.–

Tattha dhammen±ti ahampi tava ±cariyabh±ga½ hirañña½ v± suvaººa½ v± aggahetv± dhammeneva manta½ sampad±si½, tvampi kiñci adatv± dhammena sameneva paµiggahesi. Dhamme µhitanti ±cariyap³jakadhamme µhita½. T±disaketi tath±r³pe ak±laphalagaºh±pake mante na dema, gaccha na me ruccas²ti. So eva½ ±cariyena uyyojito “ki½ mayha½ j²viten±”ti arañña½ pavisitv± an±thamaraºa½ mari. Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi devadatto ±cariya½ paccakkh±ya mah±vin±sa½ patto”ti vatv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± akataññ³ m±ºavo devadatto ahosi, r±j± ±nando, caº¹±laputto pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
