So kir±yasm± tissatthero bhagavato pitucch±putto ahosi, mahallakak±le pabbajitv± buddh±na½ uppannal±bhasakk±ra½ paribhuñjanto th³lasar²ro ±koµitapacc±koµitehi c²varehi niv±setv± yebhuyyena vih±ramajjhe upaµµh±nas±l±ya½ nis²dati. Tath±gata½ dassanatth±ya ±gat± ±gantukabhikkh³ ta½ disv± “eko mah±thero bhavissat²”ti saññ±ya tassa santika½ gantv± vatta½ ±pucchanti, p±dasamb±han±d²ni ±pucchanti. So tuºh² ahosi. Atha na½ eko daharabhikkhu “kativass± tumhe”ti pucchitv± “vassa½ natthi, mahallakak±le pabbajit± mayan”ti vutte, “±vuso, dubbin²ta, mahallaka attano pam±ºa½ na j±n±si, ettake mah±there disv± s±m²cikammamattampi na karosi, vatte ±pucchiyam±ne tuºh² hosi, kukkuccamattampi te natth²”ti acchara½ pahari. So khattiyam±na½ janetv± “tumhe kassa santika½ ±gat±”ti pucchitv± “satthu santikan”ti vutte “ma½ pana ‘ko eso’ti sallakkhetha, m³lameva vo chindiss±m²”ti vatv± rudanto dukkh² dummano satthu santika½ agam±si Atha na½ satth± “ki½ nu tva½ tissa dukkh² dummano assumukho rodam±no ±gatos²”ti pucchi. So pana devilo nipajjam±no attano nipajjanaµµh±ne anipajjitv± dv±ramajjhe tiriya½ nipajji. N±rado ratti½ nikkhamanto tassa jaµ±su akkami. “Ko ma½ akkam²”ti ca vutte, “±cariya, ahan”ti ±ha. “K³µajaµila, araññato ±gantv± mama jaµ±su akkamas²”ti. “¾cariya, tumh±ka½ idha nipannabh±va½ na j±n±mi, khamatha me”ti vatv± tassa kandantasseva bahi nikkhami. Itaro “aya½ pavisantopi ma½ akkameyy±”ti parivattetv± p±daµµh±ne s²sa½ katv± nipajji. N±radopi pavisanto “paµhama½p±ha½ ±cariye aparajjhi½, id±nissa p±dapassena pavisiss±m²”ti cintetv± ±gacchanto g²v±ya akkami. “Ko eso”ti ca vutte “aha½, ±cariy±”ti vatv± “k³µajaµila, paµhama½ mama jaµ±su akkamitv± id±ni g²v±ya akkamasi, abhisapiss±mi tan”ti vutte, “±cariya, mayha½ doso natthi, aha½ tumh±ka½ eva½ nipannabh±va½ na j±n±mi, ‘paµhamampi me aparaddha½, id±ni p±dapassena pavisiss±m²’ti paviµµhomhi, khamatha me”ti ±ha. “K³µajaµila, abhisapiss±mi tan”ti. “M± eva½ karittha ±cariy±”ti. Ta½ abhisapi eva. N±rado, “±cariya, mayha½ doso natth²ti mama vadantasseva tumhe abhisapatha, yassa doso atthi, tassa muddh± phalatu, m± niddosass±”ti vatv±–

Abhisapi. So pana mah±nubh±vo at²te catt±l²sa, an±gate catt±l²s±ti as²tikappe anussarati. Tasm± “kassa nu kho upari abhisapo patissat²”ti upadh±rento “±cariyass±”ti ñatv± tasmi½ anukampa½ paµicca iddhibalena aruºuggamana½ niv±reti.
N±gar± aruºe anuggacchante r±jadv±ra½ gantv±, “deva, tayi rajja½ k±rente aruºo na uµµhahati, aruºa½ no uµµh±peh²”ti kandi½su. R±j± attano k±yakamm±d²ni olokento kiñci ayutta½ adisv± “ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti cintetv± “pabbajit±na½ viv±dena bhavitabban”ti parisaªkam±no “kacci imasmi½ nagare pabbajit± atth²”ti pucchi. “Hiyyo s±ya½ kumbhak±ras±l±ya½ ±gat± atthi dev±”ti vutte ta½khaºaññeva r±j± ukk±hi dh±riyam±n±hi tattha gantv± n±rada½ vanditv± ekamanta½ nisinno ±ha–
“Kammant± nappavattanti, jambud²passa n±rada;
kena loko tamobh³to, ta½ me akkh±hi pucchito”ti.
N±rado sabba½ ta½ pavatti½ ±cikkhitv± imin± k±raºena aha½ imin± abhisapito, ath±ha½ “mayha½ doso natthi, yassa doso atthi, tasseva upari abhisapo patat³”ti vatv± abhisapi½. Abhisapitv± ca pana “kassa nu kho upari abhisapo patissat²”ti upadh±rento “s³riyuggamanavel±ya ±cariyassa muddh± sattadh± phalissat²”ti disv± etasmi½ anukampa½ paµicca aruºassa uggamana½ na dem²ti. “Katha½ pana assa, bhante, antar±yo na bhaveyy±”ti. “Sace ma½ kham±peyya, na bhaveyy±”ti. “Tena hi kham±peh²”ti vutte “eso, mah±r±ja, ma½ jaµ±su ca g²v±ya ca akkami, n±ha½ eta½ k³µajaµila½ kham±pem²”ti. “Kham±pehi, bhante, m± eva½ karitth±”ti. “Na kham±pem²”ti. “Muddh± te sattadh± phalissat²”ti vuttepi na kham±petiyeva. Atha na½ r±j± “na tva½ attano ruciy± kham±pessas²”ti hatthap±dakucchig²v±su g±h±petv± n±radassa p±dam³le onam±pesi. N±radopi “uµµhehi, ±cariya, kham±mi te”ti vatv±, “mah±r±ja, n±ya½ yath±manena kham±peti, nagarassa avid³re eko saro atthi, tattha na½ s²se mattik±piº¹a½ katv± galappam±ºe udake µhap±peh²”ti ±ha. R±j± tath± k±resi. N±rado devila½ ±mantetv±, “±cariya, may± iddhiy± vissaµµh±ya s³riyasant±pe uµµhahante udake nimujjitv± aññena µh±nena uttaritv± gaccheyy±s²”ti ±ha. “Tassa s³riyara½s²hi sa½phuµµhamattova mattik±piº¹o sattadh± phali, so nimujjitv± aññena µh±nena pal±y²”ti. Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± “tad±, bhikkhave, r±j± ±nando ahosi, devilo tisso, n±rado ahamev±ti eva½ tad±pesa dubbacoyev±”ti vatv± tissatthera½ ±mantetv±, “tissa, bhikkhuno n±ma ‘asuken±ha½ akkuµµho, asukena pahaµo, asukena jito, asuko kho me bhaº¹a½ ah±s²’ti cintentassa vera½ n±ma na v³pasammati, eva½ pana anupanayhantasseva upasammat²”ti vatv± im± g±th± abh±si– 3. “Akkocchi ma½ avadhi ma½, ajini ma½ ah±si me;
ye ca ta½ upanayhanti, vera½ tesa½ na sammati.

ye ca ta½ nupanayhanti, vera½ tes³pasammat²”ti.
Tattha akkocch²ti akkosi. Avadh²ti pahari. Ajin²ti k³µasakkhi-ot±raºena v± v±dapaµiv±dena v± karaºuttariyakaraºena v± ajesi. Ah±si meti mama santaka½ patt±d²su kiñcideva avahari. Ye ca tanti ye keci devat± v± manuss± v± gahaµµh± v± pabbajit± v± ta½ “akkocchi man”ti-±divatthuka½ kodha½ sakaµadhura½ viya naddhin± p³timacch±d²ni viya ca kus±d²hi punappuna½ veµhetv± upanayhanti, tesa½ saki½ uppanna½ vera½ na sammat²ti v³pasammati. Ye ca ta½ nupanayhant²ti asatiy± amanasik±ravasena v± kammapaccavekkhaº±divasena v± ye ta½ akkos±divatthuka½ kodha½ tay±pi koci niddoso purimabhave akkuµµho bhavissati, pahaµo bhavissati, k³µasakkhi½ ot±retv± jito bhavissati, kassaci te pasayha kiñci acchinna½ bhavissati, tasm± niddoso hutv±pi akkos±d²ni p±puº±s²ti eva½ na upanayhanti. Tesu pam±dena uppannampi vera½ imin± anupanayhanena nirindhano viya j±tavedo v³pasammat²ti. Desan±pariyos±ne satasahassabhikkh³ sot±pattiphal±d²ni p±puºi½su. Dhammadesan± mah±janassa s±tthik± ahosi.
