Sahassamapi ce g±th±ti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± jetavane viharanto d±ruc²riyatthera½ ±rabbha kathesi.
Ekasmiñhi k±le bah³ manuss± n±v±ya mah±samudda½ pakkhanditv± antomah±samudde bhinn±ya n±v±ya macchakacchapabhakkh± ahesu½. Ekovettha eka½ phalaka½ gahetv± v±yamanto supp±rakapaµµanat²ra½ okkami, tassa niv±sanap±rupana½ natthi. So añña½ kiñci apassanto sukkhakaµµhadaº¹ake v±kehi paliveµhetv± niv±sanap±rupana½ katv± devakulato kap±la½ gahetv± supp±rakapaµµana½ agam±si, manuss± ta½ disv± y±gubhatt±d²ni datv± “aya½ eko arah±”ti sambh±vesu½. So vatthesu upan²tesu “sac±ha½ niv±sess±mi v± p±rupiss±mi v±, l±bhasakk±ro me parih±yissat²”ti t±ni vatth±ni paµikkhipitv± d±ruc²r±neva paridahi. Athassa bah³hi “arah± arah±”ti vuccam±nassa eva½ cetaso parivitakko udap±di “ye kho keci loke arahanto v± arahattamagga½ v± sam±pann±, aha½ tesa½ aññataro”ti. Athassa pur±ºas±lohit± devat± eva½ cintesi.
Pur±ºas±lohit±ti pubbe ekato katasamaºadhamm±. Pubbe kira kassapadasabalassa s±sane osakkam±ne s±maºer±d²na½ vippak±ra½ disv± satta bhikkh³ sa½vegappatt± “y±va s±sanassa antaradh±na½ na hoti, t±va attano patiµµha½ kariss±m±”ti suvaººacetiya½ vanditv± arañña½ paviµµh± eka½ pabbata½ disv± “j²vite s±lay± nivattantu. Nir±lay± ima½ pabbata½ abhiruhant³”ti vatv± nisseºi½ bandhitv± sabbepi ta½ abhiruyha nisseºi½ p±tetv± samaºadhamma½ kari½su. Tesu saªghatthero ekaratt±tikkameneva arahatta½ p±puºi. So anotattadahe n±galat±dantakaµµha½ kh±ditv± uttarakuruto piº¹ap±ta½ ±haritv± te bhikkh³ ±ha– “±vuso, ima½ dantakaµµha½ kh±ditv± mukha½ dhovitv± ima½ piº¹ap±ta½ paribhuñjath±”ti. Ki½ pana, bhante, amhehi eva½ katik± kat± “yo paµhama½ arahatta½ p±puº±ti, ten±bhata½ piº¹ap±ta½ avases± paribhuñjissant²”ti? “No heta½, ±vuso”ti. “Tena hi sace mayampi tumhe viya visesa½ nibbattess±ma, saya½ ±haritv± paribhuñjiss±m±”ti na icchi½su. Dutiyadivase dutiyatthero an±g±miphala½ p±puºi. Sopi tatheva piº¹ap±ta½ ±haritv± itare nimantesi. Te evam±ha½su– “ki½ pana, bhante, amhehi eva½ katik± kat± ‘mah±therena ±bhata½ piº¹ap±ta½ abhuñjitv± anutherena ±bhata½ bhuñjiss±m±”’ti? “No heta½, ±vuso”ti. “Eva½ sante tumhe viya mayampi visesa½ nibbattetv± attano purisak±rena bhuñjitu½ sakkont± bhuñjiss±m±”ti na icchi½su. Tesu arahatta½ patto bhikkhu parinibb±yi, an±g±m² brahmaloke nibbatti. Itare pañca ther± visesa½ nibbattetu½ asakkont± sussitv± sattame divase k±la½ katv± devaloke nibbattitv± imasmi½ buddhupp±de tato cavitv± tattha tattha kulagharesu nibbatti½su. Tesu eko pukkus±ti r±j± (ma. ni. 3.342) ahosi, eko kum±rakassapo (ma. ni. 1.249), eko d±ruc²riyo (ud±. 10), eko dabbo mallaputto (p±r±. 380; ud±. 79) eko sabhiyo paribb±jakoti (su. ni. sabhiyasutta½). Tattha yo brahmaloke nibbatto bhikkhu ta½ sandh±yeta½ vutta½ “pur±ºas±lohit± devat±”ti.
Tassa hi brahmuno etadahosi– “aya½ may± saddhi½ nisseºi½ bandhitv± pabbata½ abhiruhitv± samaºadhamma½ ak±si, id±ni ima½ laddhi½ gahetv± vicaranto vinasseyya, sa½vejess±mi nan”ti. Atha na½ upasaªkamitv± evam±ha– “neva kho tva½, b±hiya, arah±, napi arahattamagga½ v± sam±panno, s±pi te paµipad± natthi, y±ya tva½ arah± v± assa arahattamagga½ v± sam±panno”ti. B±hiyo ±k±se µhatv± kathenta½ mah±brahm±na½ oloketv± cintesi– “aho bh±riya½ kamma½ kata½, aha½ ‘arahantomh²’ti cintesi½, ayañca ma½ ‘na tva½ arah±, napi arahattamagga½ v± sam±pannos²’ti vadati, atthi nu kho loke añño arah±”ti. Atha na½ pucchi– “atthi nu kho etarahi devate loke arah± v± arahattamagga½ v± sam±panno”ti. Athassa devat± ±cikkhi– “atthi, b±hiya, uttaresu janapadesu s±vatthi n±ma nagara½, tattha so bhagav± etarahi viharati araha½ samm±sambuddho. So hi, b±hiya, bhagav± arah± ceva arahattatth±ya ca dhamma½ deset²”ti.
B±hiyo rattibh±ge devat±ya katha½ sutv± sa½viggam±naso ta½ khaºa½yeva supp±rak± nikkhamitv± ekarattiv±sena s±vatthi½ agam±si, sabba½ v²sayojanasatika½ magga½ ekarattiv±seneva agam±si. Gacchanto ca pana devat±nubh±vena gato. “Buddh±nubh±ven±”tipi vadantiyeva. Tasmi½ pana khaºe satth± s±vatthi½ piº¹±ya paviµµho hoti. So bhuttap±tar±se k±ya-±lasiyavimocanattha½ abbhok±se caªkamante sambahule bhikkh³ “kaha½ etarahi satth±”ti pucchi. Bhikkh³ “bhagav± s±vatthi½ piº¹±ya paviµµho”ti vatv± ta½ pucchi½su– “tva½ pana kuto ±gatos²”ti? “Supp±rak± ±gatomh²”ti. “Kad± nikkhantos²”ti? “Hiyyo s±ya½ nikkhantomh²”ti. “D³ratosi ±gato, nis²da, tava p±de dhovitv± telena makkhetv± thoka½ vissam±hi, ±gatak±le satth±ra½ dakkhissas²”ti. “Aha½, bhante, satthu v± attano v± j²vitantar±ya½ na j±n±mi, ekarattenevamhi katthaci aµµhatv± anis²ditv± v²sayojanasatika½ magga½ ±gato, satth±ra½ passitv±va vissamiss±m²”ti. So eva½ vatv± taram±nar³po s±vatthi½ pavisitv± bhagavanta½ anopam±ya buddhasiriy± piº¹±ya caranta½ disv± “cirassa½ vata me gotamo samm±sambuddho diµµho”ti diµµhaµµh±nato paµµh±ya onatasar²ro gantv± antarav²thiyameva pañcapatiµµhitena vanditv± gopphakesu da¼ha½ gahetv± evam±ha– “desetu me, bhante, bhagav± dhamma½, desetu sugato dhamma½, ya½ mamassa d²gharatta½ hit±ya sukh±y±”ti. Atha na½ satth± “ak±lo kho t±va, b±hiya, antaraghara½ paviµµhamh± piº¹±y±”ti paµikkhipi.
Ta½ sutv± b±hiyo, bhante, sa½s±re sa½sarantena kaba¼²k±r±h±ro na aladdhapubbo, tumh±ka½ v± mayha½ v± j²vitantar±ya½ na j±n±mi, desetu me dhammanti. Satth± dutiyampi paµikkhipiyeva. Eva½ kirassa ahosi– “imassa ma½ diµµhak±lato paµµh±ya sakalasar²ra½ p²tiy± nirantara½ ajjhotthaµa½ hoti, balavap²tivego dhamma½ sutv±pi na sakkhissati paµivijjhitu½, majjhattupekkh±ya t±va tiµµhatu, ekaratteneva v²sayojanasatika½ magga½ ±gatatt± darathopissa balav±, sopi t±va paµippassambhat³”ti. Tasm± dvikkhattu½ paµikkhipitv± tatiya½ y±cito antarav²thiya½ µhitova “tasm±tiha te, b±hiya, eva½ sikkhitabba½ ‘diµµhe diµµhamatta½ bhavissat²”’ti-±din± (ud±. 10) nayena dhamma½ desesi. So satthu dhamma½ suºantoyeva sabb±save khepetv± saha paµisambhid±hi arahatta½ p±puºi. T±vadeva ca pana bhagavanta½ pabbajja½ y±ci, “paripuººa½ te pattac²varan”ti puµµho “na paripuººan”ti ±ha. Atha na½ satth± “tena hi pattac²vara½ pariyes±h²”ti vatv± pakk±mi.
“So kira v²sati vassasahass±ni samaºadhamma½ karonto ‘bhikkhun± n±ma attan± paccaye labhitv± añña½ anoloketv± sayameva paribhuñjitu½ vaµµat²’ti ekabhikkhuss±pi pattena v± c²varena v± saªgaha½ na ak±si tenassa iddhimayapattac²vara½ na upajjissat²”ti ñatv± ehibhikkhubh±vena pabbajja½ na ad±si. Tampi pattac²vara½ pariyesam±nameva ek± yakkhin² dhenur³pena ±gantv± uramhi paharitv± j²vitakkhaya½ p±pesi. Satth± piº¹±ya caritv± katabhattakicco sambahulehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ nikkhanto b±hiyassa sar²ra½ saªk±raµµh±ne patita½ disv± bhikkh³ ±º±pesi, “bhikkhave, ekasmi½ gehadv±re µhatv± mañcaka½ ±har±petv± ima½ sar²ra½ nagarato n²haritv± jh±petv± th³pa½ karoth±”ti. Bhikkh³ tath± kari½su, katv± ca pana vih±ra½ gantv± satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± attan± katakicca½ ±rocetv± tassa abhisampar±ya½ pucchi½su. Atha nesa½ bhagav± tassa parinibbutabh±va½ ±cikkhitv± “etadagga½, bhikkhave, mama s±vak±na½ bhikkh³na½ khipp±bhiññ±na½ yadida½ b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo”ti (a. ni. 1.216) etadagge µhapesi. Atha na½ bhikkh³ pucchi½su– “bhante, tumhe ‘b±hiyo arahatta½ patto’ti vadetha, kad± so arahatta½ patto”ti? “Mama dhamma½ sutak±le, bhikkhave”ti. “Kad± panassa, bhante, tumhehi dhammo kathito”ti? “Piº¹±ya carantena antarav²thiya½ µhatv±”ti. “Appamattako hi, bhante, tumhehi antarav²thiya½ µhatv± kathitadhammo katha½ so t±vattakena visesa½ nibbattes²”ti, atha ne satth± “ki½, bhikkhave, mama dhamma½ ‘appa½ v± bahu½ v±’ti m± pam±ºa½ gaºhatha. Anek±nipi hi g±th±sahass±ni anatthanissit±ni na seyyo, atthanissita½ pana ekampi g±th±pada½ seyyo”ti vatv± anusandhi½ ghaµetv± dhamma½ desento ima½ g±tham±ha–
101. “Sahassamapi ce g±th±, anatthapadasa½hit±;
eka½ g±th±pada½ seyyo, ya½ sutv± upasammat²”ti.
Tattha eka½ g±th±pada½ seyyoti “appam±do amatapada½…pe… yath± may±”ti (dha. pa. 21) evar³p± ek± g±th±pi seyyoti attho. Sesa½ purimanayeneva veditabba½.
