18. Eka½ samaya½ bhagav± kosalesu c±rika½ carati mahat± bhikkhusaªghena saddhi½. Addas± kho bhagav± addh±namaggappaµipanno aññatarasmi½ padese macchika½ macchabandha½ macche vadhitv± vadhitv± vikkiºam±na½. Disv± magg± okkamma aññatarasmi½ rukkham³le paññatte ±sane nis²di. Nisajja kho bhagav± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, amu½ macchika½ macchabandha½ macche vadhitv± vadhitv± vikkiºam±nan”ti? “Eva½, bhante”.
“Ta½ ki½ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diµµha½ v± suta½ v±– ‘macchiko macchabandho macche vadhitv± vadhitv± vikkiºam±no tena kammena tena ±j²vena hatthiy±y² v± assay±y² v± rathay±y² v± y±nay±y² v± bhogabhog² v± mahanta½ v± bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasanto”’ti? “No heta½, bhante” “S±dhu, bhikkhave! May±pi kho eta½, bhikkhave, neva diµµha½ na suta½– ‘macchiko macchabandho macche vadhitv± vadhitv± vikkiºam±no tena kammena tena ±j²vena hatthiy±y² v± assay±y² v± rathay±y² v± y±nay±y² v± bhogabhog² v± mahanta½ v± bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasanto’ti. Ta½ kissa hetu? Te hi so, bhikkhave, macche vajjhe vadh±yupan²te [vadh±y±n²te (sy±. ka½.), vadh±ya n²te (ka.)] p±pakena manas±nupekkhati, tasm± so neva hatthiy±y² hoti na assay±y² na rathay±y² na y±nay±y² na bhogabhog², na mahanta½ bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasati.

Ta½ kissa hetu? Te hi so, bhikkhave, g±vo vajjhe vadh±yupan²te p±pakena manas±nupekkhati, tasm± so neva hatthiy±y² hoti na assay±y² na rathay±y² na y±nay±y² na bhogabhog², na mahanta½ bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasati”.
“Ta½ ki½ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diµµha½ v± suta½ v±– ‘orabbhiko…pe… s³kariko [sokariko (sy±.)] …pe… s±kuºiko…pe… m±gaviko mage [mige (sy±. ka½.)] vadhitv± vadhitv± vikkiºam±no tena kammena tena ±j²vena hatthiy±y² v± assay±y² v± rathay±y² v± y±nay±y² v± bhogabhog² v± mahanta½ v± bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasanto”’ti? “No heta½, bhante”. “S±dhu, bhikkhave! May±pi kho eta½, bhikkhave, neva diµµha½ na suta½– ‘m±gaviko mage vadhitv± vadhitv± vikkiºam±no tena kammena tena ±j²vena hatthiy±y² v± assay±y² v± rathay±y² v± y±nay±y² v± bhogabhog² v± mahanta½ v± bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasanto’ti. Ta½ kissa hetu? Te hi so, bhikkhave, mage vajjhe vadh±yupan²te p±pakena manas±nupekkhati, tasm± so neva hatthiy±y² hoti na assay±y² na rathay±y² na y±nay±y² na bhogabhog², na mahanta½ bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasati. Te hi (n±ma) [( ) bah³su natthi] so, bhikkhave, tiracch±nagate p±ºe vajjhe vadh±yupan²te p±pakena manas±nupekkham±no [manas±nupekkhati, tasm± so (sy±. ka.)] neva hatthiy±y² bhavissati [hoti (sy±. ka.)] na assay±y² na rathay±y² na y±nay±y² na bhogabhog², na mahanta½ bhogakkhandha½ ajjh±vasissati [ajjh±vasati (sy±. ka.)]. Ko pana v±do ya½ manussabh³ta½ vajjha½ vadh±yupan²ta½ p±pakena manas±nupekkhati! Tañhi tassa [ta½ hissa (p². ka.)], bhikkhave, hoti d²gharatta½ ahit±ya dukkh±ya. K±yassa bhed± para½ maraº± ap±ya½ duggati½ vinip±ta½ niraya½ upapajjat²”ti. Aµµhama½.
