Atha te manuss± “addh± ettha p±papuriso atthi; sal±ka½ deth±”ti sal±k± d²yam±n± tasseva tikkhattu½ p±puºi. Te tassa u¼umpa½ datv± ta½ samudde pakkhipi½su. So eka½ d²pa½ gantv± vim±napet²hi saddhi½ sampatti½ anubhavanto t±hi “purato m± agam±s²”ti vuccam±nopi taddiguºa½ sampatti½ passanto anupubbena khuracakkadhara½ eka½ purisa½ addasa. Tassa ta½ cakka½ padumapuppha½ viya upaµµh±ti. So ta½ ±ha– “ambho, ida½ tay± pi¼andhapaduma½ mayha½ deh²”ti. “Nayida½, s±mi paduma½; khuracakka½ etan”ti. So “vañcesi ma½ tva½. “Catubbhi aµµhajjhagam±, aµµhahi pica so¼asa;

Aññataropi atriccho amacco sakavisaya½ atikkamitv± paravisaya½ p±visi. Tattha pothito pal±yitv± ekassa t±pasassa vasanaµµh±na½ pavisitv± uposathaªg±ni adhiµµh±ya nipajji. So t±pasena ‘ki½ te katan’ti pucchito im± g±th±yo abh±si–

atricchat± mallag±ma½ agacchi½;
tato jan± nikkhamitv±na g±m±,

850. Mahicchat±niddese mahant±ni vatth³ni icchati, mahat² v±ssa icch±ti mahiccho, tassa bh±vo mahicchat±. Lakkhaºato pana asantaguºasambh±vanat± paµiggahaºe ca paribhoge ca amattaññut±– eta½ mahicchat±lakkhaºa½. Mahiccho hi puggalo yath± n±ma kacchapuµav±ºijo pi¼andhanabhaº¹aka½ hatthena gahetv± ucchaªgepi pakkhipitabbayuttaka½ pakkhipitv± mah±janassa passantasseva “amm±, asuka½ gaºhatha, asuka½ gaºhath±”ti mukhena sa½vidahati. Evameva so appamattakampi attano s²la½ v± gantha½ v± dhutaguºa½ v± antamaso araññav±samattakampi mah±janassa j±nantasseva sambh±vetuk±mo hoti, sambh±vetv± ca pana sakaµehipi upan²te paccaye ‘alan’ti avatv± gaºh±ti. Tayo hi p³retu½ na sakk±– aggi up±d±nena, samuddo udakena, mahiccho paccayeh²ti.

Mahicchapuggalo hi vij±tam±tuy±pi mana½ gaºhitu½ na sakkoti, pageva upaµµh±k±na½. Tatrim±ni vatth³ni– eko kira daharabhikkhu piµµhap³ve piy±yati. Sabbe pam±ºayuttakameva paµiggahesu½. Atha r±j± ±ha– “passatha tumh±ka½ bhikkh³su ekopi matta½ na j±n±ti. Hiyyo kiñci avasesa½ n±hosi. Ajja gahita½ manda½, avasesameva bah³”ti tesa½ mattaññut±ya attamano itaresañca amattaññut±ya anattamano ahosi. 851. P±picchat±niddese assaddho sam±no saddhoti ma½ jano j±n±t³ti-±d²su eva½ icchanto ki½ karoti? Assaddho saddh±k±ra½ dasseti; duss²l±dayo s²lavant±d²na½ ±k±ra½ dassenti. Katha½? Assaddho t±va mah±mahadivase manuss±na½ vih±ra½ ±gamanavel±ya sammajjani½ ±d±ya vih±ra½ sammajjati, kacavara½ cha¹¹eti, manussehi diµµhabh±va½ ñatv± cetiyaªgaºa½ gacchati, tatth±pi sammajjitv± kacavara½ cha¹¹eti, v±lika½ sama½ karoti, ±san±ni dhovati, bodhimhi udaka½ siñcati. Manuss± disv± ‘natthi maññe añño bhikkhu vih±rajagganako, ayameva ima½ vih±ra½ paµijaggati, saddho thero’ti gamanak±le nimantetv± gacchanti. Duss²lopi upaµµh±k±na½ sammukhe vinayadhara½ upasaªkamitv± pucchati “bhante, mayi gacchante goºo ubbiggo. Tena dh±vat± tiº±ni chinn±ni. Sammajjantassa me tiº±ni chijjanti. Caªkamantassa me p±ºak± m²yanti. Khe¼a½ p±tentassa asatiy± tiºamatthake patati; tattha tattha ki½ hot²”ti? “An±patti, ±vuso, asañcicca asatiy± aj±nantass±”ti ca vutte “bhante, mayha½ garuka½ viya upaµµh±ti; suµµhu v²ma½sath±”ti bhaºati. Ta½ sutv± manuss± ‘amh±ka½ ayyo ettakepi kukkucc±yati! Aññasmi½ o¼±rike ki½ n±ma karissati; natthi imin± sadiso s²lav±ti pasann± sakk±ra½ karonti. Appassutopi upaµµh±kamajjhe nisinno “asuko tipiµakadharo, asuko catunik±yiko mayha½ antev±siko, mama santike tehi dhammo uggahito”ti vadati. Manuss± ‘amh±ka½ ayyena sadiso bahussuto natthi, etassa kira santike asukena ca asukena ca dhammo uggahito’ti pasann± sakk±ra½ karonti. Saªgaºik±r±mopi mah±mahadivase d²ghap²µhañca apassayañca g±h±petv± vih±rapaccante rukkham³le div±vih±ra½ nis²dati. Manuss± ±gantv± “thero kuhin”ti pucchanti. “Gaºµhikaputt± n±ma gaºµhik± eva honti. Tena thero evar³pe k±le idha na nis²dati, vih±rapaccante div±µµh±ne d²ghacaªkame viharat²”ti vadanti. Muµµhassat²pi upaµµh±kamajjhe nisinno “may± asukak±le n±ma d²ghanik±yo uggahito, asukak±le majjhimo, sa½yuttako, aªguttariko; antar± olokana½ n±ma natthi, icchiticchataµµh±ne mukh±ru¼hova tanti ±gacchati; ime panaññe bhikkh³ e¼ak± viya mukha½ phand±pent± viharant²”ti vadati. Manuss± ‘natthi ayyena sadiso upaµµhitasat²’ti pasann± sakk±ra½ karonti. Asam±hitopi upaµµh±k±na½ sammukhe aµµhakath±cariye pañha½ pucchati– ‘kasiºa½ n±ma katha½ bh±veti? Kittakena nimitta½ uppanna½ n±ma hoti? Kittakena upac±ro? Kittakena appan±? Paµhamassa jh±nassa kati aªg±ni? Dutiyassa tatiyassa catutthassa jh±nassa kati aªg±ni”ti pucchati. Na hi pariyattidharo dukkhato na muccat²ti. Akh²º±savopi g±mad±rake disv± ‘tumh±ka½ m±t±pitaro amhe ki½ vadant²”ti? “Arah±ti vadanti, bhante”ti. ‘Y±va chek± gahapatik±, na sakk± vañcetun’ti attano kh²º±savabh±va½ d²peti.
