Ayampi purimabuddhesu kat±dhik±ro tattha tattha bhave vivaµµ³panissay±ni puńń±ni upacinanto padumuttarassa bhagavato k±le ha½savat²nagare satthu vem±tikabh±t± hutv± nibbatti. Sumanotissa n±ma½ ahosi. Pit± panassa nandar±j± n±ma. So attano puttassa sumanakum±rassa vayappattassa ha½savat²nagarato v²sayojanasate µh±ne bhoganagara½ ad±si. So kad±ci kad±ci ±gantv± satth±rańca pitarańca passati. Tad± r±j± satth±rańca satasahassaparim±ŗa½ bhikkhusaŖghańca sayameva sakkacca½ upaµµhahi, ańńesa½ upaµµh±tu½ na deti.
Tena samayena paccanto kupito ahosi. Kum±ro tassa kupitabh±va½ rańńo an±rocetv± sayameva ta½ v³pasamesi. Ta½ sutv± r±j± tuµµham±naso “vara½ te t±va dammi, gaŗh±h²”ti ±ha. Kum±ro “satth±ra½ bhikkhusaŖghańca tem±sa½ upaµµhahanto j²vita½ avańjha½ k±tu½ icch±m²”ti ±ha. “Eta½ na sakk±, ańńa½ vadeh²”ti. “Deva, khattiy±na½ dve kath± n±ma natthi, eta½ me dehi, na mayha½ ańńenattho, sace satth± anuj±n±ti, dinnamev±”ti. So “satthu citta½ j±niss±m²”ti vih±ra½ gato. Tena ca samayena bhagav± gandhakuµi½ paviµµho hoti. So bhikkh³ upasaŖkamitv± “aha½, bhante, bhagavanta½ dassan±ya ±gato, dassetha man”ti. Bhikkh³ “sumano n±ma thero satthu upaµµh±ko, tassa santika½ gacch±h²”ti ±ha½su. So therassa santika½ gantv± “satth±ra½, bhante, dasseth±”ti ±ha. Atha thero tassa passantasseva pathaviya½ nimujjitv± bhagavanta½ upasaŖkamitv± “r±japutto, bhante, tumh±ka½ dassan±ya ±gato”ti ±ha. “Tena hi bhikkhu bahi ±sana½ pańńapeh²”ti. Thero punapi buddh±sana½ gahetv± antogandhakuµiya½ nimujjitv± tassa passantassa bahipariveŗe p±tubhavitv± gandhakuµipariveŗe ±sana½ pańń±pesi. Kum±ro ta½ disv± “mahanto vat±ya½ bhikkh³”ti citta½ upp±desi.
Bhagav±pi gandhakuµito nikkhamitv± pańńatt±sane nis²di. R±japutto satth±ra½ vanditv± paµisanth±ra½ katv± “aya½, bhante, thero tumh±ka½ s±sane vallabho mańńe”ti? “¾ma, kum±ra, vallabho”ti. “Ki½ katv±, bhante, esa vallabho”ti? “D±n±d²ni puńń±ni katv±”ti. “Bhagav±, ahampi aya½ thero viya an±gate buddhas±sane vallabho hotuk±mo”ti so buddhappamukhassa saŖghassa satt±ha½ khandh±v±re bhatta½ datv± sattame divase, “bhante, may± pitu santik± tumh±ka½ tem±sa½ paµijagganavaro laddho, tem±sa½ me vass±v±sa½ adhiv±seth±”ti vatv± satthu adhiv±sana½ viditv± sapariv±ra½ bhagavanta½ gahetv± yojane yojane satthu bhikkhusaŖghassa ca vasan±nucchavike vih±re k±retv± tattha tattha vas±pento attano vasanaµµh±nasam²pe satasahassena k²te sobhanan±make uyy±ne satasahassena k±rita½ vih±ra½ paves±petv±–
“Satasahassena me k²ta½, satasahassena k±rita½;
sobhana½ n±ma uyy±na½, paµiggaŗha mah±mun²”ti.–

Udaka½ p±tesi. So vass³pan±yikadivase satthu mah±d±na½ pavattetv± “imin± n²h±rena d±na½ dadeyy±th±”ti puttad±re amacce ca d±ne kiccakaraŗe ca niyojetv± saya½ sumanattherassa vasanaµµh±nasam²peyeva vasanto eva½ attano vasanaµµh±ne satth±ra½ tem±sa½ upaµµhahi. So tasmi½ buddhupp±de vassasatasahassa½ puńń±ni katv± tato parampi tattha tattha bhave u¼±r±ni puńńakamm±ni upacinitv± devamanussesu sa½saranto kassapabhagavato k±le kulagehe nibbatto vińńuta½ patv± ekassa therassa piŗ¹±ya carato pattaggahaŗattha½ uttaras±µaka½ katv± p³ja½ ak±si. So anukkamena vayappatto kat±bhinikkhamane samm±sambodhi½ patv± pavattitavaradhammacakke paµhama½ kapilavatthu½ gantv± tato nikkhamante bhagavati tassa pariv±rattha½ pabbajitu½ nikkhamantehi bhaddiy±d²hi saddhi½ nikkhamitv± bhagavato santike pabbajitv± ±yasmato puŗŗassa mant±ŗiputtassa santike dhammakatha½ sutv± sot±pattiphale patiµµhahi.
Tena ca samayena bhagavato paµhamabodhiya½ v²sativass±ni anibaddh± upaµµh±k± ahesu½. Ekad± n±gasam±lo pattac²vara½ gahetv± vicarati, ekad± n±gito, ekad± upav±no, ekad± sunakkhatto, ekad± cundo samaŗuddeso, ekad± s±gato, ekad± meghiyo, te yebhuyyena satthu citta½ n±r±dhayi½su. Athekadivasa½ bhagav± gandhakuµipariveŗe pańńattavarabuddh±sane bhikkhusaŖghaparivuto nisinno bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “aha½, bhikkhave, id±ni mahallako ekacce bhikkh³ ‘imin± maggena gacch±m²’ti vutte ańńena maggena gacchanti, ekacce mayha½ pattac²vara½ bh³miya½ nikkhipanti, mayha½ nibaddhupaµµh±ka½ eka½ bhikkhu½ vij±nath±”ti. Ta½ sutv± bhikkh³na½ dhammasa½vego udap±di. Ath±yasm± s±riputto uµµh±ya bhagavanta½ vanditv± “aha½, bhante, tumhe upaµµhahiss±m²”ti ±ha. Ta½ bhagav± paµikkhipi. Etenup±yena mah±moggall±na½ ±di½ katv± sabbe mah±s±vak± “aha½ upaµµhahiss±mi aha½ upaµµhahiss±m²”ti uµµhahi½su µhapetv± ±yasmanta½ ±nanda½. Tepi bhagav± paµikkhipi.
¾nando pana tuŗh²yeva nis²di. Atha na½ bhikkh³ ±ha½su– “±vuso, tvampi satthu upaµµh±kaµµh±na½ y±c±h²”ti. “Y±citv± laddhupaµµh±na½ n±ma k²disa½ hoti? Sace ruccati, satth± sayameva vakkhat²”ti. Atha bhagav±– “na, bhikkhave, ±nando ańńehi uss±hetabbo, sayameva j±nitv± ma½ upaµµhahissat²”ti ±ha. Tato bhikkh³ “uµµhehi, ±vuso ±nanda, satth±ra½ upaµµh±kaµµh±na½ y±c±h²”ti ±ha½su. Thero uµµhahitv± “sace me, bhante, bhagav± attan± laddha½ paŗ²ta½ c²vara½ na dassati, paŗ²ta½ piŗ¹ap±ta½ na dassati, ekagandhakuµiya½ vasitu½ na dassati, nimantana½ gahetv± na gamissati, ev±ha½ bhagavanta½ upaµµhahiss±m²”ti ±ha. “Ettake guŗe labhato satthu upaµµh±na½ ko bh±ro”ti upav±damocanattha½ ime catt±ro paµikkhep±, “sace, bhante, bhagav± may± gahita½ nimantana½ gamissati, sac±ha½ desantarato ±gat±gate t±vadeva dassetu½ labh±mi, yad± me kaŖkh± uppajjati, t±vadeva bhagavanta½ upasaŖkamitv± pucchitu½ labh±mi, sace bhagav± parammukh± desita½ dhamma½ puna mayha½ by±karissasi, ev±ha½ bhagavanta½ upaµµhahiss±mi”. “Ettakampi satthu santike anuggaha½ na labhat²”ti upav±damocanatthańceva dhammabhaŗ¹±g±rikabh±vaparip³raŗatthańca im± catasso y±can±ti ime aµµha vare gahetv± nibaddhupaµµh±ko ahosi. Tasseva µh±nantarassa atth±ya kappasatasahassa½ p³rit±na½ p±ram²na½ phala½ p±puŗi.
So upaµµh±kaµµh±na½ laddhadivasato paµµh±ya dasabala½ duvidhena udakena tividhena dantakaµµhena hatthap±daparikammena piµµhiparikammena gandhakuµipariveŗasammajjanen±ti evam±d²hi kiccehi upaµµhahanto– “im±ya n±ma vel±ya satthu ida½ n±ma laddhu½ vaµµati, ida½ n±ma k±tu½ vaµµat²”ti divasabh±ga½ santik±vacaro hutv± rattibh±ge mahanta½ daŗ¹ad²pika½ gahetv± gandhakuµipariveŗa½ navav±re anupariy±yati satthari pakkosante paµivacanad±n±ya, thinamiddhavinodanattha½. Atha na½ satth± jetavane ariyagaŗamajjhe nisinno anekapariy±yena pasa½sitv± bahussut±na½ satimant±na½ gatimant±na½ dhitimant±na½ upaµµh±k±nańca bhikkh³na½ aggaµµh±ne µhapesi.
