So cintesi– “evar³pampi n±ma sar²ra½ jar±ya ima½ vippak±ra½ p±puºissati, ima½ me bh±tar± upatissena diµµha½ bhavissati, ajjeva may± pal±yitv± pabbajitu½ vaµµat²”ti. Atha na½ ñ±tak± kum±rik±ya saddhi½ ekay±na½ ±ropetv± ±d±ya pakkami½su. So thoka½ gantv± sar²rakicca½ apadisitv± “µhapetha t±va y±na½, otaritv± ±gamiss±m²”ti y±n± otaritv± ekasmi½ gumbe thoka½ papañca½ katv± agam±si. Punapi thoka½ gantv± teneva apadesena otaritv± abhiruhi, punapi tatheva ak±si. Athassa ñ±tak± “addh± imassa uµµh±n±ni vattant²”ti sallakkhetv± n±tida¼ha½ ±rakkha½ kari½su. Sopi tato pal±yitv± ekasmi½ padese ti½samatt± bhikkh³ vasanti, tesa½ santika½ gantv± vanditv± ±ha– “pabb±jetha ma½, bhante”ti. “¾vuso, tva½ sabb±laªk±rapaµimaº¹ito, maya½ te r±japuttabh±va½ v± amaccaputtabh±va½ v± na j±n±ma, katha½ pabb±jess±m±”ti? “Tumhe ma½, bhante, na j±n±th±”ti? “Na j±n±m±vuso”ti. “Aha½ upatissassa kaniµµhabh±tiko”ti. “Ko esa upatisso n±m±”ti? “Bhante, bhaddant± mama bh±tara½ ‘s±riputto’ti vadanti, tasm± may± ‘upatisso’ti vutte na j±nant²”ti. “Ki½ pana tva½ s±riputtattherassa kaniµµhabh±tiko”ti? “¾ma, bhante”ti. “Tena hi ehi, bh±tar± te anuññ±tamev±”ti vatv± bhikkh³ tassa ±bharaº±ni omuñc±petv± ekamanta½ µhapetv± ta½ pabb±jetv± therassa s±sana½ pahiºi½su. Thero ta½ sutv± bhagavato ±rocesi– “bhante, ‘±raññikabhikkh³hi kira revato pabb±jito’ti s±sana½ pahiºi½su, gantv± ta½ passitv± ±gamiss±m²”ti. Satth± “adhiv±sehi t±va, s±riputt±”ti gantu½ na ad±si. Thero puna katip±haccayena satth±ra½ ±pucchi. Satth± “adhiv±sehi t±va, s±riputta, mayampi ±gamiss±m±”ti neva gantu½ ad±si. S±maºeropi “sac±ha½ idha vasiss±mi ñ±tak± ma½ anubandhitv± pakkosissant²”ti tesa½ bhikkh³na½ santike y±va arahatt± kammaµµh±na½ uggaºhitv± pattac²varam±d±ya c±rika½ caram±no tato ti½sayojanike µh±ne khadiravana½ gantv± antovasseyeva tem±sabbhantare saha paµisambhid±hi arahatta½ p±puºi. Theropi pav±retv± satth±ra½ puna tattha gamanatth±ya ±pucchi. Satth± “mayampi gamiss±ma, s±riputt±”ti pañcahi bhikkhusatehi saddhi½ nikkhami. Thoka½ gatak±le ±nandatthero dvedh±pathe µhatv± satth±ra½ ±ha– “bhante, revatassa santika½ gamanamaggesu aya½ parih±rapatho saµµhiyojaniko manuss±v±so, aya½ ujumaggo ti½sayojaniko amanussapariggahito, katarena gacch±m±”ti. “S²vali, pana, ±nanda, amhehi saddhi½ ±gato”ti? “¾ma, bhante”ti. “Sace, s²vali, ±gato, ujumaggameva gaºh±h²”ti. Satth± kira “aha½ tumh±ka½ y±gubhatta½ upp±dess±mi, ujumagga½ gaºh±h²”ti avatv± “tesa½ tesa½ jan±na½ puññassa vip±kad±naµµh±na½ etan”ti ñatv± “sace, s²vali, ±gato, ujumagga½ gaºh±h²”ti ±ha. Satthari pana ta½ magga½ paµipanne devat± “amh±ka½ ayyassa s²valittherassa sakk±ra½ kariss±m±”ti cintetv± ekekayojane vih±re k±retv± ekayojanato uddha½ gantu½ adatv± p±to vuµµh±ya dibbay±gu-±d²ni gahetv±, “ayyo, no s²valitthero kaha½ nisinno”ti vicaranti. Thero attano abhihaµa½ buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa d±pesi. Eva½ satth± sapariv±ro ti½sayojanika½ kant±ra½ s²valittherassa puñña½ anubhavam±nova ±gam±si. Revatattheropi satthu ±gamana½ ñatv± bhagavato gandhakuµi½ m±petv± pañca k³µ±g±rasat±ni, pañca caªkamanasat±ni, pañcarattiµµh±nadiv±µµh±nasat±ni ca m±pesi. Satth± tassa santike m±samattameva vasi. Tasmi½ vasam±nopi s²valittherasseva puñña½ anubhavi. Tattha pana dve mahallakabhikkh³ satthu khadiravana½ pavisanak±le eva½ cintayi½su– “aya½ bhikkhu ettaka½ navakamma½ karonto ki½ sakkhissati samaºadhamma½ k±tu½, satth± ‘s±riputtassa kaniµµho’ti mukholokanakicca½ karonto evar³passa navakammikassa bhikkhussa santika½ ±gato”ti. Satth±pi ta½ divasa½ pacc³sak±le loka½ voloketv± te bhikkh³ disv± tesa½ citt±c±ra½ aññ±si. Tasm± tattha m±samatta½ vasitv± nikkhamanadivase yath± te bhikkh³ attano telan±¼iñca udakatumbañca up±han±ni ca pamussanti, tath± adhiµµhahitv± nikkhamanto vih±r³pac±rato bahi nikkhantak±le iddhi½ vissajjesi. Atha te bhikkh³ “may± idañcidañca pamuµµha½ may±pi pamuµµhan”ti ubhopi nivattitv± ta½ µh±na½ asallakkhetv± khadirarukkhakaºµakehi vijjham±n± vicaritv± ekasmi½ khadirarukkhe olambanta½ attano bhaº¹aka½ disv± ±d±ya pakkami½su. Satth±pi bhikkhusaªgha½ ±d±ya puna m±samatteneva s²valittherassa puñña½ anubhavam±no paµigantv± pubb±r±ma½ p±visi. Atha te mahallakabhikkh³ p±tova mukha½ dhovitv± “±gantukabhattad±yik±ya vis±kh±ya ghara½ y±gu½ piviss±m±”ti gantv± y±gu½ pivitv± khajjaka½ kh±ditv± nis²di½su. Atha ne vis±kh± pucchi– “tumhepi, bhante, satth±r± saddhi½ revatattherassa vasanaµµh±na½ agamitth±”ti. “¾ma, up±siketi, ramaº²ya½, bhante, therassa vasanaµµh±nan”ti. “Kuto tassa ramaº²yat± setakaºµakakhadirarukkhagahana½ pet±na½ niv±sanaµµh±nasadisa½ up±sike”ti. Athaññe dve daharabhikkh³ ±gami½su. Up±sik± tesampi y±gukhajjaka½ datv± tatheva paµipucchi Te ±ha½su– “na sakk± up±sike vaººetu½, sudhammadevasabh±sadisa½ iddhiy± abhisaªkhata½ viya therassa vasanaµµh±nan”ti. Up±sik± cintesi– “paµhama½ ±gat± bhikkh³ aññath± vadi½su, ime aññath± vadanti, paµhama½ ±gat± bhikkh³ kiñcideva pamussitv± iddhiy± vissaµµhak±le paµinivattitv± gat± bhavissanti, ime pana iddhiy± abhisaªkharitv± nimmitak±le gat± bhavissant²”ti attano paº¹itabh±vena etamattha½ ñatv± “satth±ra½ ±gatak±le pucchiss±m²”ti aµµh±si. Tato muhutta½yeva satth± bhikkhusaªghaparivuto vis±kh±ya geha½ gantv± paññatt±sane nis²di. S± buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ sakkacca½ parivisitv± bhattakicc±vas±ne satth±ra½ vanditv± paµipucchi– “bhante, tumhehi saddhi½ gatabhikkh³su ekacce revatattherassa vasanaµµh±na½ ‘khadiragahana½ araññan’ti vadanti, ekacce ‘ramaº²yan’ti, ki½ nu kho etan”ti? Ta½ sutv± satth± “up±sike g±mo v± hotu arañña½ v±, yasmi½ µh±ne arahanto viharanti, ta½ ramaº²yamev±”ti vatv± anusandhi½ ghaµetv± dhamma½ desento ima½ g±tham±ha– 98. “G±me v± yadi v±raññe, ninne v± yadi v± thale;
yattha arahanto viharanti, ta½ bh³mir±maºeyyakan”ti.
Tattha kiñc±pi arahanto g±mante k±yaviveka½ na labhanti, cittaviveka½ pana labhanteva. Tesañhi dibbapaµibh±g±nipi ±rammaº±ni citta½ c±letu½ na sakkonti. Tasm± g±mo v± hotu araññ±d²na½ v± aññatara½, yattha arahanto viharanti, ta½ bh³mir±maºeyyakanti so bh³mipadeso ramaº²yo ev±ti attho. Desan±vas±ne bah³ sot±pattiphal±d²ni p±puºi½s³ti. Aparena samayena bhikkh³ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½– “±vuso, kena nu kho k±raºena ±yasm± s²valitthero sattadivasasattam±s±dhik±ni satta vass±ni m±tu kucchiya½ vasi, kena niraye pacci, kena nissandena l±bhaggayasaggappatto j±to”ti? Satth± ta½ katha½ sutv±, “bhikkhave, ki½ katheth±”ti pucchitv±, “bhante, ida½ n±m±”ti vutte tass±yasmato pubbakamma½ kathento ±ha– Bhikkhave ito ekanavutikappe vipass² bhagav± loke uppajjitv± ekasmi½ samaye janapadac±rika½ caritv± pitu nagara½ pacc±gam±si. R±j± buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa ±gantukad±na½ sajjetv± n±gar±na½ s±sana½ pesesi “±gantv± mayha½ d±ne sah±yak± hont³”ti. Te tath± katv± “raññ± dinnad±nato atirekatara½ dass±m±”ti satth±ra½ nimantetv± punadivase d±na½ paµiy±detv± rañño s±sana½ pahiºi½su. R±j± ±gantv± tesa½ d±na½ disv± “ito adhikatara½ dass±m²”ti punadivasatth±ya satth±ra½ nimantesi, neva r±j± n±gare par±jetu½ sakkhi, na n±gar± r±j±na½. N±gar± chaµµhe v±re “sve d±ni yath± ‘imasmi½ d±ne ida½ n±ma natth²’ti na sakk± hoti vattu½, eva½ d±na½ dass±m±”ti cintetv± punadivase d±na½ paµiy±detv± “ki½ nu kho ettha natth²”ti olokent± allamadhumeva na addasa½su. Pakkamadhu pana bahu½ atthi. Te allamadhussatth±ya cat³su nagaradv±resu catt±ri kah±paºasahass±ni g±h±petv± pahiºi½su. Atheko janapadamanusso g±mabhojaka½ passitu½ ±gacchanto antar±magge madhupaµala½ disv± makkhik± pal±petv± s±kha½ chinditv± s±kh±daº¹akeneva saddhi½ madhupaµala½ ±d±ya “g±mabhojakassa dass±m²”ti nagara½ p±visi. Madhu-atth±ya gato ta½ disv±, “ambho, vikkiºiya½ madhun”ti pucchi. “Na vikkiºiya½, s±m²”ti. “Handa, ima½ kah±paºa½ gahetv± deh²”ti. So cintesi– “ima½ madhupaµala½ p±damattampi na agghati, aya½ pana kah±paºa½ deti. Bahukah±paºako maññe, may± va¹¹hetu½ vaµµat²”ti. Atha na½ “na dem²”ti ±ha, “tena hi dve kah±paºe gaºh±h²”ti. “Dv²hipi na dem²”ti. Eva½ t±va va¹¹hesi, y±va so “tena hi ida½ sahassa½ gaºh±h²”ti bhaº¹ika½ upanesi. Atha na½ so ±ha– “ki½ nu kho tva½ ummattako ud±hu kah±paº±na½ µhapanok±sa½ na labhasi, p±dampi na agghanaka½ madhu½ ‘sahassa½ gahetv± deh²’ti vadasi, ‘ki½ n±meta”n’ti? ‘J±n±maha½, bho, imin± pana me kamma½ atthi, teneva½ vad±m²’ti. “Ki½ kamma½, s±m²”ti? “Amhehi vipass²buddhassa aµµhasaµµhisamaºasahassapariv±rassa mah±d±na½ sajjita½, tatreka½ allamadhumeva natthi, tasm± eva½ gaºh±m²”ti. Eva½, sante, n±ha½ m³lena dass±mi, sace “ahampi d±ne patti½ labhiss±mi, dass±m²”ti. So gantv± n±gar±na½ tamattha½ ±rocesi. N±gar± tassa saddh±ya balavabh±va½ ñatv±, “s±dhu, pattiko hot³”ti paµij±ni½su, te buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ nis²d±petv± y±gukhajjaka½ datv± mahati½ suvaººap±ti½ ±har±petv± madhupaµala½ p²¼±pesu½. Teneva manussena paºº±k±ratth±ya dadhiv±rakopi ±haµo atthi, so tampi dadhi½ p±tiya½ ±kiritv± tena madhun± sa½sanditv± buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa ±dito paµµh±ya ad±si. Ta½ y±vadattha½ gaºhant±na½ sabbesa½ p±puºi uttarimpi avasiµµha½ ahosiyeva. “Eva½ thoka½ madhu katha½ t±va bah³na½ p±puº²”ti na cintetabba½. Tañhi buddh±nubh±vena p±puºi. Buddhavisayo na cintetabbo. Catt±ri hi “acinteyy±n²”ti (a. ni. 4.77) vutt±ni. T±ni cintento umm±dasseva bh±g² hot²ti. So puriso ettaka½ kamma½ katv± ±yupariyos±ne devaloke nibbattitv± ettaka½ k±la½ sa½saranto ekasmi½ samaye devalok± cavitv± b±r±ºasiya½ r±jakule nibbatto pitu accayena rajja½ p±puºi. So “eka½ nagara½ gaºhiss±m²”ti gantv± pariv±resi, n±gar±nañca s±sana½ pahiºi “rajja½ v± me dentu yuddha½ v±”ti. Te “neva rajja½ dass±ma, na yuddhan”ti vatv± c³¼adv±rehi nikkhamitv± d±r³dak±d²ni ±haranti, sabbakicc±ni karonti. Itaropi catt±ri mah±dv±r±ni rakkhanto sattam±s±dhik±ni satta vass±ni nagara½ uparundhi. Athassa m±t± “ki½ me putto karot²”ti pucchitv± “ida½ n±ma dev²”ti ta½ pavatti½ sutv± “b±lo mama putto, gacchatha, tassa ‘c³¼adv±r±nipi pidh±ya nagara½ uparundhat³’ti vadeth±”ti. So m±tu s±sana½ sutv± tath± ak±si. N±gar±pi bahi nikkhamitu½ alabhant± sattame divase attano r±j±na½ m±retv± tassa rajja½ ada½su. So ima½ kamma½ katv± ±yupariyos±ne av²cimhi nibbattitv± y±v±ya½ pathav² yojanamatta½ ussann±, t±va niraye paccitv± catunna½ c³¼adv±r±na½ pidahitatt± tato cuto tass± eva m±tu kucchismi½ paµisandhi½ gahetv± sattam±s±dhik±ni satta vass±ni antokucchismi½ vasitv± satta divas±ni yonimukhe tiriya½ nipajji. Eva½, bhikkhave, s²vali, tad± nagara½ uparundhitv± gahitakammena ettaka½ k±la½ niraye paccitv± catunna½ c³¼adv±r±na½ pidahitatt± tato cuto tass± eva m±tu kucchiya½ paµisandhi½ gahetv± ettaka½ k±la½ kucchiya½ vasi. Navamadhuno dinnatt± l±bhaggayasaggappatto j±toti. Punekadivasa½ bhikkh³ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½– “aho s±maºerassa l±bho, aho puñña½, yena ekakena pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ pañcak³µ±g±rasat±d²ni kat±n²”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte, “bhikkhave, mayha½ puttassa neva puñña½ atthi, na p±pa½, ubhayamassa pah²nan”ti vatv± br±hmaºavagge ima½ g±tham±ha–
“Yodha puññañca p±pañca, ubho saªgamupaccag±;
