Atha kho s²hassa sen±patissa etadahosi– “nissa½saya½ kho so bhagav± araha½ samm±sambuddho bhavissati, tath± hime sambahul± abhiññ±t± abhiññ±t± licchav² santh±g±re sannisinn± sannipatit± anekapariy±yena buddhassa vaººa½ bh±santi, dhammassa vaººa½ bh±santi, saªghassa vaººa½ bh±santi. Ya½n³n±ha½ ta½ bhagavanta½ dassan±ya upasaªkameyya½ arahanta½ samm±sambuddhan”ti. Atha kho s²ho sen±pati yena nigaºµho n±µaputto [n±thaputto (ka. s².), n±taputto (ka. s².)] tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± nigaºµha½ n±µaputta½ etadavoca– “icch±maha½, bhante, samaºa½ gotama½ dassan±ya upasaªkamitun”ti.
“Ki½ pana tva½, s²ha, kiriyav±do sam±no akiriyav±da½ samaºa½ gotama½ dassan±ya upasaªkamissasi? Samaºo hi, s²ha, gotamo akiriyav±do, akiriy±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”ti. Atha kho s²hassa sen±patissa yo ahosi gamiy±bhisaªkh±ro [gamik±bhisaªkh±ro (ka. s².) mah±va. 290] bhagavanta½ dassan±ya, so paµippassambhi.

Atha kho s²ho sen±pati pañcamattehi rathasatehi div±divassa ves±liy± niyy±si bhagavanta½ dassan±ya. Y±vatik± y±nassa bh³mi, y±nena gantv± y±n± paccorohitv± pattikova agam±si. Atha kho s²ho sen±pati yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho s²ho sen±pati bhagavanta½ etadavoca–
“Suta½ meta½, bhante– ‘akiriyav±do samaºo gotamo, akiriy±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²’ti. Ye te, bhante, evam±ha½su– ‘akiriyav±do samaºo gotamo, akiriy±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²’ti, kacci te, bhante, bhagavato vuttav±dino na ca bhagavanta½ abh³tena abbh±cikkhanti dhammassa c±nudhamma½ by±karonti na ca koci sahadhammiko v±d±nuv±do [v±d±nup±to (ka. s². sy±.) a. ni. 3.58; 5.5] g±rayha½ µh±na½ ±gacchati? Anabbhakkh±tuk±m± hi maya½, bhante, bhagavantan”ti.

“Atthi, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘jegucch² samaºo gotamo, jegucchit±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.
“Atthi s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘venayiko samaºo gotamo, vinay±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.

“Atthi, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘ass±sako samaºo gotamo, ass±s±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.
“Katamo ca, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘akiriyav±do samaºo gotamo, akiriy±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²’ti? Ahañhi, s²ha, akiriya½ vad±mi k±yaduccaritassa vac²duccaritassa manoduccaritassa; anekavihit±na½ p±pak±na½ akusal±na½ dhamm±na½ akiriya½ vad±mi. Aya½ kho, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘akiriyav±do samaºo gotamo, akiriy±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.

Ahañhi, s²ha, kiriya½ vad±mi k±yasucaritassa vac²sucaritassa manosucaritassa; anekavihit±na½ kusal±na½ dhamm±na½ kiriya½ vad±mi. Aya½ kho, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘kiriyav±do samaºo gotamo, kiriy±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.
“Katamo ca, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘ucchedav±do samaºo gotamo, ucched±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²’ti? Ahañhi, s²ha, uccheda½ vad±mi r±gassa dosassa mohassa; anekavihit±na½ p±pak±na½ akusal±na½ dhamm±na½ uccheda½ vad±mi. Aya½ kho, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘ucchedav±do samaºo gotamo, ucched±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.

Ahañhi, s²ha, vinay±ya dhamma½ desemi r±gassa dosassa mohassa; anekavihit±na½ p±pak±na½ akusal±na½ dhamm±na½ vinay±ya dhamma½ desemi. Tath±gatassa kho, s²ha, tapan²y± p±pak± akusal± dhamm± pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±. Aya½ kho, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘tapass² samaºo gotamo, tapassit±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.
“Katamo ca, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘apagabbho samaºo gotamo, apagabbhat±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²’ti? Yassa kho s²ha, ±yati½ gabbhaseyy± punabbhav±bhinibbatti pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±, tamaha½ ‘apagabbho’ti vad±mi. Tath±gatassa kho, s²ha, ±yati½ gabbhaseyy± punabbhav±bhinibbatti pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±. Ahañhi, s²ha, ass±sako paramena ass±sena, ass±s±ya dhamma½ desemi, tena ca s±vake vinemi. Aya½ kho, s²ha, pariy±yo, yena ma½ pariy±yena samm± vadam±no vadeyya– ‘ass±sako samaºo gotamo, ass±s±ya dhamma½ deseti, tena ca s±vake vinet²”’ti.
Eva½ vutte s²ho sen±pati bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “abhikkanta½, bhante, abhikkanta½, bhante…pe… up±saka½ ma½, bhante, bhagav± dh±retu ajjatagge p±ºupeta½ saraºa½ gatan”ti.
“Anuviccak±ra½ kho, s²ha, karohi. Anuviccak±ro tumh±dis±na½ ñ±tamanuss±na½ s±dhu hot²”ti. “Imin±p±ha½, bhante, bhagavato bhiyyosomatt±ya attamano abhiraddho, ya½ ma½ bhagav± evam±ha– ‘anuviccak±ra½ kho, s²ha, karohi. Anuviccak±ro tumh±dis±na½ ñ±tamanuss±na½ s±dhu hot²’ti. Mañhi, bhante, aññatitthiy± s±vaka½ labhitv± kevalakappa½ ves±li½ paµ±ka½ parihareyyu½– ‘s²ho amh±ka½ sen±pati s±vakatta½ upagato’ti. Atha ca pana bhagav± evam±ha– ‘anuviccak±ra½, s²ha, karohi. Anuviccak±ro tumh±dis±na½ ñ±tamanuss±na½ s±dhu hot²’ti. Es±ha½, bhante, dutiyampi bhagavanta½ saraºa½ gacch±mi dhammañca bhikkhusaªghañca. Up±saka½ ma½ bhagav± dh±retu ajjatagge p±ºupeta½ saraºa½ gatan”ti.
“D²gharatta½ kho te, s²ha, nigaºµh±na½ op±nabh³ta½ kula½, yena nesa½ upagat±na½ piº¹aka½ d±tabba½ maññeyy±s²”ti. “Imin±p±ha½, bhante, bhagavato bhiyyosomatt±ya attamano abhiraddho, ya½ ma½ bhagav± evam±ha– ‘d²gharatta½ kho te, s²ha, nigaºµh±na½ op±nabh³ta½ kula½, yena nesa½ upagat±na½ piº¹aka½ d±tabba½ maññeyy±s²’ti. Suta½ meta½, bhante– ‘samaºo gotamo evam±ha– mayhameva d±na½ d±tabba½, mayhameva s±vak±na½ d±tabba½; mayhameva dinna½ mahapphala½, na aññesa½ dinna½ mahapphala½; mayhameva s±vak±na½ dinna½ mahapphala½, na aññesa½ s±vak±na½ dinna½ mahapphalan’ti, atha ca pana ma½ bhagav± nigaºµhesupi d±ne sam±dapeti [sam±d±peti (?)]. Api ca, bhante, mayamettha k±la½ j±niss±ma. Es±ha½, bhante, tatiyampi bhagavanta½ saraºa½ gacch±mi dhammañca bhikkhusaªghañca. Up±saka½ ma½, bhante, bhagav± dh±retu ajjatagge p±ºupeta½ saraºa½ gatan”ti.
Atha kho bhagav± s²hassa sen±patissa anupubbi½ katha½ [anupubbikatha½ (sabbattha)] kathesi, seyyathida½– d±nakatha½ s²lakatha½ saggakatha½, k±m±na½ ±d²nava½ ok±ra½ sa½kilesa½ nekkhamme ±nisa½sa½ pak±sesi. Yad± bhagav± aññ±si s²ha½ sen±pati½ kallacitta½ muducitta½ vin²varaºacitta½ udaggacitta½ pasannacitta½, atha y± buddh±na½ s±mukka½sik± dhammadesan± ta½ pak±sesi– dukkha½ samudaya½ nirodha½ magga½. Seyyath±pi n±ma suddha½ vattha½ apagatak±¼aka½ sammadeva rajana½ paµiggaºheyya; evameva½ s²hassa sen±patissa tasmi½yeva ±sane viraja½ v²tamala½ dhammacakkhu½ udap±di– “ya½ kiñci samudayadhamma½, sabba½ ta½ nirodhadhamman”ti.
Atha kho s²ho sen±pati diµµhadhammo pattadhammo viditadhammo pariyog±¼hadhammo tiººavicikiccho vigatakatha½katho ves±rajjappatto aparappaccayo satthus±sane bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “adhiv±setu me, bhante, bhagav± sv±tan±ya bhatta½ saddhi½ bhikkhusaªghen±”ti. Adhiv±sesi bhagav± tuºh²bh±vena.
Atha kho s²ho sen±pati bhagavato adhiv±sana½ viditv± uµµh±y±san± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± padakkhiºa½ katv± pakk±mi. Atha kho s²ho sen±pati aññatara½ purisa½ ±mantesi– “gaccha tva½, ambho purisa pavattama½sa½ j±n±h²”ti. Atha kho s²ho sen±pati tass± rattiy± accayena sake nivesane paº²ta½ kh±dan²ya½ bhojan²ya½ paµiy±d±petv± bhagavato k±la½ ±roc±pesi– “k±lo, bhante! Niµµhita½ bhattan”ti.
Atha kho bhagav± pubbaºhasamaya½ niv±setv± pattac²varam±d±ya yena s²hassa sen±patissa nivesana½ tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± paññatte ±sane nis²di saddhi½ bhikkhusaªghena. Tena kho pana samayena sambahul± nigaºµh± ves±liya½ rathik±ya rathika½ [rathiy±ya rathiya½ (bah³su)] siªgh±µakena siªgh±µaka½ b±h± paggayha kandanti– “ajja s²hena sen±patin± th³la½ pasu½ vadhitv± samaºassa gotamassa bhatta½ kata½. Ta½ samaºo gotamo j±na½ uddissakata½ ma½sa½ paribhuñjati paµiccakamman”ti.
Atha kho aññataro puriso yena s²ho sen±pati tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± s²hassa sen±patissa upakaººake ±rocesi– “yagghe, bhante, j±neyy±si! Ete sambahul± nigaºµh± ves±liya½ rathik±ya rathika½ siªgh±µakena siªgh±µaka½ b±h± paggayha kandanti– ‘ajja s²hena sen±patin± th³la½ pasu½ vadhitv± samaºassa gotamassa bhatta½ kata½. Ta½ samaºo gotamo j±na½ uddissakata½ ma½sa½ paribhuñjati paµiccakamman’ti. Ala½ ayyo d²gharattañhi te ±yasmanto avaººak±m± buddhassa avaººak±m± dhammassa avaººak±m± saªghassa. Na ca panete ±yasmanto jiridanti ta½ bhagavanta½ asat± tucch± mus± abh³tena abbh±cikkhitu½; na ca maya½ j²vitahetupi sañcicca p±ºa½ j²vit± voropeyy±m±”ti.
Atha kho s²ho sen±pati buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ paº²tena kh±dan²yena bhojan²yena sahatth± santappesi sampav±resi. Atha kho s²ho sen±pati bhagavanta½ bhutt±vi½ on²tapattap±ºi½ ekamanta½ nis²di.
