Desehi ta½ dukkaµan”ti. “Aha½ kho, bhante, assatiy± bhagavanta½ na pucchi½– ‘katam±ni pana, bhante, khudd±nukhuddak±ni sikkh±pad±n²’ti. N±ha½ ta½ dukkaµa½ pass±mi, api c±yasmant±na½ saddh±ya desemi ta½ dukkaµan”ti. “Idampi te, ±vuso ±nanda, dukkaµa½, ya½ tva½ bhagavato vassikas±µika½ akkamitv± sibbesi. Desehi ta½ dukkaµan”ti. “Aha½ kho, bhante, na ag±ravena bhagavato vassikas±µika½ akkamitv± sibbesi½. 444. Tena kho pana samayena ±yasm± pur±ºo dakkhiº±girismi½ c±rika½ carati mahat± bhikkhusaªghena saddhi½ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi. Atha kho ±yasm± pur±ºo therehi bhikkh³hi dhamme ca vinaye ca saªg²te dakkhiº±girismi½ yath±bhiranta½ viharitv± yena r±jagaha½ yena ve¼uvana½ kalandakaniv±po yena ther± bhikkh³ tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± therehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ paµisammoditv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinna½ kho ±yasmanta½ pur±ºa½ ther± bhikkh³ etadavocu½– “therehi, ±vuso pur±ºa, dhammo ca vinayo ca saªg²to. Upehi ta½ saªg²tin”ti. “Susaªg²t±vuso, therehi dhammo ca vinayo ca. Apica yatheva may± bhagavato sammukh± suta½, sammukh± paµiggahita½, tathev±ha½ dh±ress±m²”ti.

3. Brahmadaº¹akath±

Atha kho ±yasm± ±nando there bhikkh³ etadavoca– “bhagav± ma½, bhante, parinibb±nak±le evam±ha– ‘tena h±nanda, saªgho mamaccayena channassa bhikkhuno brahmadaº¹a½ ±º±pet³”’ti “Pucchi pana tva½, ±vuso ±nanda, bhagavanta½– ‘katamo pana, bhante, brahmadaº¹o”’ti? “Pucchi½ khoha½, bhante, bhagavanta½– ‘katamo pana, bhante, brahmadaº¹o”’ti? “Channo, ±nanda, bhikkhu ya½ iccheyya ta½ vadeyya. Bhikkh³hi channo bhikkhu neva vattabbo, na ovaditabbo, n±nus±sitabbo”ti. “Tena h±vuso ±nanda, tva½yeva channassa bhikkhuno brahmadaº¹a½ ±º±peh²”ti. “Kath±ha½, bhante, channassa bhikkhuno brahmadaº¹a½ ±º±pemi, caº¹o so bhikkhu pharuso”ti? ‘Tena h±vuso ±nanda, bahukehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ gacch±h²”ti. “Eva½ bhante”ti kho ±yasm± ±nando ther±na½ bhikkh³na½ paµissutv± mahat± bhikkhusaªghena saddhi½ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi n±v±ya ujjavanik±ya kosambi½ ujjavi, n±v±ya paccorohitv± rañño udenassa [utenassa (ka.)] uyy±nassa avid³re aññatarasmi½ rukkham³le nis²di. Tena kho pana samayena r±j± udeno uyy±ne paric±resi saddhi½ orodhena. Assosi kho rañño udenassa orodho– “amh±ka½ kira ±cariyo ayyo ±nando uyy±nassa avid³re aññatarasmi½ rukkham³le nisinno”ti. Atha kho rañño udenassa orodho r±j±na½ udena½ etadavoca– “amh±ka½ kira, deva, ±cariyo ayyo ±nando uyy±nassa avid³re aññatarasmi½ rukkham³le nisinno. Icch±ma maya½, deva, ayya½ ±nanda½ passitun”ti. “Tena hi tumhe samaºa½ ±nanda½ passath±”ti.

Ayañcarahi ±yasmato ±nandassa paµhama½ c²varabhikkh± uppajji c²varasahassa½. Atha kho ±yasm± ±nando yena ghosit±r±mo tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± paññatte ±sane nis²di. Atha kho ±yasm± channo yen±yasm± ±nando tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± ±yasmanta½ ±nanda½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinna½ kho ±yasmanta½ channa½ ±yasm± ±nando etadavoca– “saªghena te, ±vuso channa, brahmadaº¹o ±º±pito”ti.
“Katamo pana, bhante ±nanda, brahmadaº¹o ±º±pito”ti? “Tva½, ±vuso channa, bhikkh³ ya½ iccheyy±si ta½ vadeyy±si. Bhikkh³hi tva½ neva vattabbo, na ovaditabbo, n±nus±sitabbo”ti. “Nanv±ha½, bhante ±nanda, hato ett±vat±, yatoha½ bhikkh³hi neva vattabbo, na ovaditabbo, n±nus±sitabbo”ti tattheva mucchito papato. Atha kho ±yasm± channo brahmadaº¹ena aµµ²yam±no har±yam±no jiguccham±no eko v³pakaµµho appamatto ±t±p² pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva yassatth±ya kulaputt± sammadeva ag±rasm± anag±riya½ pabbajanti, tadanuttara½ brahmacariyapariyos±na½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja vih±si. ‘Kh²º± j±ti, vusita½ brahmacariya½, kata½ karaº²ya½, n±para½ itthatt±y±’ti abbhaññ±si. Aññataro ca pan±yasm± channo arahata½ ahosi. Atha kho ±yasm± channo arahatta½ patto yen±yasm± ±nando tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± ±yasmanta½ ±nanda½ etadavoca– “paµippassambhehi d±ni me, bhante ±nanda, brahmadaº¹an”ti. “Yadaggena tay±, ±vuso channa, arahatta½ sacchikata½ tadaggena te brahmadaº¹o paµippassaddho”ti. Im±ya kho pana vinayasaªg²tiy± pañca bhikkhusat±ni an³n±ni anadhik±ni ahesu½. Tasm± aya½ vinayasaªg²ti “pañcasatik±”ti vuccat²ti.
