502. Tena samayena buddho bhagav± s±vatthiya½ viharati jetavane an±thapiº¹ikassa ±r±me. Tena kho pana samayena aññataro bhikkhu aciravatiy± nadiy± nah±yati. Aññataropi br±hmaºo pañcasat±na½ thavika½ thale nikkhipitv± aciravatiy± nadiy± nah±yanto vissaritv± agam±si. Atha kho so bhikkhu– “tass±ya½ br±hmaºassa thavik±, m± idha nass²”ti aggahesi. Atha kho so br±hmaºo saritv± turito ±dh±vitv± ta½ bhikkhu½ etadavoca– “api me, bho, thavika½ passeyy±s²”ti? “Handa, br±hmaº±”ti ad±si. Atha kho tassa br±hmaºassa etadahosi– “kena nu kho aha½ up±yena imassa bhikkhuno puººapatta½ na dadeyyan”ti! “Na me, bho, pañcasat±ni, sahassa½ me”ti palibundhetv± muñci. Atha kho so bhikkhu ±r±ma½ gantv± bhikkh³na½ etamattha½ ±rocesi. Ye te bhikkh³ appicch±…pe… te ujjh±yanti khiyyanti vip±centi– “kathañhi n±ma bhikkhu ratana½ uggahessat²”ti…pe… sacca½ kira tva½, bhikkhu, ratana½ uggahes²ti? “Sacca½, bhagav±”ti. Vigarahi buddho bhagav±…pe… kathañhi n±ma tva½, moghapurisa, ratana½ uggahessasi! Neta½, moghapurisa, appasann±na½ v± pas±d±ya…pe… evañca pana, bhikkhave, ima½ sikkh±pada½ uddiseyy±tha–
“Yo pana bhikkhu ratana½ v± ratanasammata½ v± uggaºheyya v± uggaºh±peyya v±, p±cittiyan”ti.
Evañcida½ bhagavat± bhikkh³na½ sikkh±pada½ paññatta½ hoti.
503. Tena kho pana samayena s±vatthiy± ussavo hoti. Manuss± alaªkatappaµiyatt± uyy±na½ gacchanti. Vis±kh±pi mig±ram±t± alaªkatappaµiyatt± “uyy±na½ gamiss±m²”ti g±mato nikkhamitv±– “ky±ha½ kariss±mi uyy±na½ gantv±, ya½n³n±ha½ bhagavanta½ payirup±seyyan”ti ±bharaºa½ omuñcitv± uttar±saªgena bhaº¹ika½ bandhitv± d±siy± ad±si– “handa, je, ima½ bhaº¹ika½ gaºh±h²”ti. Atha kho vis±kh± mig±ram±t± yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinna½ kho vis±kha½ mig±ram±tara½ bhagav± dhammiy± kath±ya sandassesi sam±dapesi samuttejesi sampaha½sesi. Atha kho vis±kh± mig±ram±t± bhagavat± dhammiy± kath±ya sandassit± sam±dapit± samuttejit± sampaha½sit± uµµh±y±san± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± padakkhiºa½ katv± pakk±mi. Atha kho s± d±s² ta½ bhaº¹ika½ vissaritv± agam±si. Bhikkh³ passitv± bhagavato etamattha½ ±rocesu½. “Tena hi, bhikkhave, uggahetv± nikkhipath±”ti. Atha kho bhagav± etasmi½ nid±ne etasmi½ pakaraºe dhammi½ katha½ katv± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “anuj±n±mi, bhikkhave, ratana½ v± ratanasammata½ v± ajjh±r±me uggahetv± v± uggah±petv± v± nikkhipitu½– “yassa bhavissati so harissat²”ti. Evañca pana, bhikkhave, ima½ sikkh±pada½ uddiseyy±tha–
“Yo pana bhikkhu ratana½ v± ratanasammata½ v±, aññatra ajjh±r±m±, uggaºheyya v± uggaºh±peyya v±, p±cittiyan”ti.
Evañcida½ bhagavat± bhikkh³na½ sikkh±pada½ paññatta½ hoti.
504. Tena kho pana samayena k±s²su janapade an±thapiº¹ikassa gahapatissa kammantag±mo hoti. Tena ca gahapatin± antev±s² ±ºatto hoti– “sace bhadant± ±gacchanti bhatta½ kareyy±s²”ti. Tena kho pana samayena sambahul± bhikkh³ k±s²su janapade c±rika½ caram±n± yena an±thapiº¹ikassa gahapatissa kammantag±mo tenupasaªkami½su. Addas± kho so puriso te bhikkh³ d³ratova ±gacchante. Disv±na yena te bhikkh³ tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± te bhikkh³ abhiv±detv± etadavoca– “adhiv±sentu, bhante, ayy± sv±tan±ya gahapatino bhattan”ti. Adhiv±sesu½ kho te bhikkh³ tuºh²bh±vena. Atha kho so puriso tass± rattiy± accayena paº²ta½ kh±dan²ya½ bhojan²ya½ paµiy±d±petv± k±la½ ±roc±petv± aªgulimuddika½ omuñcitv± te bhikkh³ bhattena parivisitv±– “ayy± bhuñjitv± gacchantu, ahampi kammanta½ gamiss±m²”ti aªgulimuddika½ vissaritv± agam±si. Bhikkh³ passitv± “sace maya½ gamiss±ma nassissat±ya½ aªgulimuddik±”ti tattheva acchi½su. Atha kho so puriso kammant± ±gacchanto te bhikkh³ passitv± etadavoca– “kissa, bhante, ayy± idheva acchant²”ti? Atha kho te bhikkh³ tassa purisassa etamattha½ ±rocetv± s±vatthi½ gantv± bhikkh³na½ etamattha½ ±rocesu½. Bhikkh³ bhagavato etamattha½ ±rocesu½. Atha kho bhagav± etasmi½ nid±ne etasmi½ pakaraºe dhammi½ katha½ katv± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “anuj±n±mi, bhikkhave, ratana½ v± ratanasammata½ v± ajjh±r±me v± ajjh±vasathe v± uggahetv± v± uggah±petv± v± nikkhipitu½– yassa bhavissati so harissat²”ti. Evañca pana, bhikkhave, ima½ sikkh±pada½ uddiseyy±tha–
505. “Yo pana bhikkhu ratana½ v± ratanasammata½ v±, aññatra ajjh±r±m± v± ajjh±vasath± v±, uggaºheyya v± uggaºh±peyya v±, p±cittiya½. Ratana½ v± pana bhikkhun± ratanasammata½ v± ajjh±r±me v± ajjh±vasathe v± uggahetv± v± uggah±petv± v± nikkhipitabba½– ‘yassa bhavissati so harissat²’ti. Aya½ tattha s±m²c²”ti.
506. Yo pan±ti yo y±diso…pe… bhikkh³ti…pe… aya½ imasmi½ atthe adhippeto bhikkh³ti.
Ratana½ n±ma mutt± maºi ve¼uriyo saªkho sil± pav±la½ rajata½ j±tar³pa½ lohitaªko [lohitako (?)] Mas±ragalla½.
Ratanasammata½ n±ma ya½ manuss±na½ upabhogaparibhoga½, eta½ ratanasammata½ n±ma.
Aññatra ajjh±r±m± v± ajjh±vasath± v±ti µhapetv± ajjh±r±ma½ ajjh±vasatha½.
Ajjh±r±mo n±ma parikkhittassa ±r±massa anto ±r±mo, aparikkhittassa upac±ro.
Ajjh±vasatho n±ma parikkhittassa ±vasathassa anto ±vasatho, aparikkhittassa upac±ro.
Uggaºheyy±ti saya½ gaºh±ti, ±patti p±cittiyassa.
Uggaºh±peyy±ti añña½ g±h±peti, ±patti p±cittiyassa.
Ratana½ v± pana bhikkhun± ratanasammata½ v± ajjh±r±me v± ajjh±vasathe v± uggahetv± v± uggah±petv± v± nikkhipitabbanti r³pena v± nimittena v± saññ±ºa½ katv± nikkhipitv± ±cikkhitabba½– “yassa bhaº¹a½ naµµha½ so ±gacchat³”ti. Sace tattha ±gacchati so vattabbo– “±vuso, k²disa½ te bhaº¹an”ti? Sace r³pena v± nimittena v± samp±deti d±tabba½, no ce samp±deti “vicin±hi ±vuso”ti vattabbo. Tamh± ±v±s± pakkamantena ye tattha honti bhikkh³ patir³p±, tesa½ hatthe nikkhipitv± pakkamitabba½. No ce honti bhikkh³ patir³p±, ye tattha honti gahapatik± patir³p±, tesa½ hatthe nikkhipitv± pakkamitabba½.

507. An±patti ratana½ v± ratanasammata½ v± ajjh±r±me v± ajjh±vasathe v± uggahetv± v± uggah±petv± v± nikkhipati– “yassa bhavissati so harissat²”ti, ratanasammata½ viss±sa½ gaºh±ti, t±vak±lika½ gaºh±ti, pa½suk³lasaññissa, ummattakassa, ±dikammikass±ti.
