Tena kho pana samayena sambahul± sandiµµh± sambhatt± bhikkh³ isigilipasse tiºakuµiyo karitv± vassa½ upagacchi½su. ¾yasm±pi dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto tiºakuµika½ karitv± vassa½ upagacchi. Atha kho te bhikkh³ vassa½vuµµh± tem±saccayena tiºakuµiyo bhinditv± tiºañca kaµµhañca paµis±metv± janapadac±rika½ pakkami½su. ¾yasm± pana dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto tattheva vassa½ vasi, tattha hemanta½, tattha gimha½. Atha kho ±yasmato dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa g±ma½ piº¹±ya paviµµhassa tiºah±riyo kaµµhah±riyo tiºakuµika½ bhinditv± tiºañca kaµµhañca ±d±ya agama½su. Tatiyampi kho ±yasmato dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa g±ma½ piº¹±ya paviµµhassa tiºah±riyo kaµµhah±riyo tiºakuµika½ bhinditv± tiºañca kaµµhañca ±d±ya agama½su.
Atha kho ±yasmato dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa etadahosi– “y±vatatiyaka½ kho me g±ma½ piº¹±ya paviµµhassa tiºah±riyo kaµµhah±riyo tiºakuµika½ bhinditv± tiºañca kaµµhañca ±d±ya agama½su. Aha½ kho pana susikkhito anavayo sake ±cariyake kumbhak±rakamme pariyod±tasippo Ya½n³n±ha½ s±ma½ cikkhalla½ madditv± sabbamattik±maya½ kuµika½ kareyyan”ti! Atha kho ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto s±ma½ cikkhalla½ madditv± sabbamattik±maya½ kuµika½ karitv± tiºañca kaµµhañca gomayañca sa½ka¹¹hitv± ta½ kuµika½ paci. S± ahosi kuµik± abhir³p± dassan²y± p±s±dik± lohitik± [lohitak± (sy±.)], seyyath±pi indagopako. Seyyath±pi n±ma kiªkaºikasaddo [kiªkiºikasaddo (s². sy±.)] evameva½ tass± kuµik±ya saddo ahosi.
85. Atha kho bhagav± sambahulehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ gijjhak³µ± pabbat± orohanto addasa ta½ kuµika½ abhir³pa½ dassan²ya½ p±s±dika½ lohitika½. Disv±na bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “ki½ eta½, bhikkhave, abhir³pa½ dassan²ya½ p±s±dika½ lohitika½, seyyath±pi indagopako”ti? Atha kho te bhikkh³ bhagavato etamattha½ ±rocesu½. Vigarahi buddho bhagav±– “ananucchavika½, bhikkhave, tassa moghapurisassa ananulomika½ appatir³pa½ ass±maºaka½ akappiya½ akaraº²ya½. Kathañhi n±ma so, bhikkhave, moghapuriso sabbamattik±maya½ kuµika½ karissati! Na hi n±ma, bhikkhave, tassa moghapurisassa p±ºesu anudday± anukamp± avihes± bhavissati! Gacchatheta½, bhikkhave, kuµika½ bhindatha. M± pacchim± janat± p±ºesu p±tabyata½ ±pajji. Na ca, bhikkhave, sabbamattik±may± kuµik± k±tabb±. Yo kareyya, ±patti dukkaµass±”ti. “Eva½, bhante”ti, kho te bhikkh³ bhagavato paµissuºitv± yena s± kuµik± tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± ta½ kuµika½ bhindi½su. Atha kho ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto te bhikkh³ etadavoca– “kissa me tumhe, ±vuso, kuµika½ bhindath±”ti? “Bhagav±, ±vuso, bhed±pet²”ti. “Bhindath±vuso, sace dhammass±m² bhed±pet²”ti.
86. Atha kho ±yasmato dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa etadahosi– “y±vatatiyaka½ kho me g±ma½ piº¹±ya paviµµhassa tiºah±riyo kaµµhah±riyo tiºakuµika½ bhinditv± tiºañca kaµµhañca ±d±ya agama½su. Y±pi may± sabbamattik±may± kuµik± kat± s±pi bhagavat± bhed±pit±. Atthi ca me d±rugahe gaºako sandiµµho. Ya½n³n±ha½ d±rugahe gaºaka½ d±r³ni y±citv± d±rukuµika½ kareyyan”ti. Atha kho ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto yena d±rugahe gaºako tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± d±rugahe gaºaka½ etadavoca– “y±vatatiyaka½ kho me, ±vuso, g±ma½ piº¹±ya paviµµhassa tiºah±riyo kaµµhah±riyo tiºakuµika½ bhinditv± tiºañca kaµµhañca ±d±ya agama½su. Y±pi may± sabbamattik±may± kuµik± kat± s±pi bhagavat± bhed±pit± Dehi me, ±vuso, d±r³ni. Icch±mi d±rukuµika½ [d±ruku¹¹ika½ kuµika½ (s².)] k±tun”ti. “Natthi, bhante, t±dis±ni d±r³ni y±n±ha½ ayyassa dadeyya½. Atthi bhante, devagahad±r³ni nagarapaµisaªkh±rik±ni ±padatth±ya nikkhitt±ni. Sace t±ni d±r³ni r±j± d±peti har±petha, bhante”ti. “Dinn±ni, ±vuso, raññ±”ti. Atha kho d±rugahe gaºakassa etadahosi– “ime kho samaº± sakyaputtiy± dhammac±rino samac±rino [sammac±rino (ka.)] brahmac±rino saccav±dino s²lavanto kaly±ºadhamm±. R±j±pimesa½ abhippasanno. N±rahati adinna½ dinnanti vattun”ti. Atha kho d±rugahe gaºako ±yasmanta½ dhaniya½ kumbhak±raputta½ etadavoca– “har±petha, bhante”ti. Atha kho ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto t±ni d±r³ni khaº¹±khaº¹ika½ ched±petv± sakaµehi nibb±h±petv± d±rukuµika½ ak±si.

Atha kho vassak±ro br±hmaºo magadhamah±matto r±jagahe kammante anusaññ±yam±no yena d±rugahe gaºako tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± d±rugahe gaºaka½ etadavoca– “y±ni t±ni, bhaºe, devagahad±r³ni nagarapaµisaªkh±rik±ni ±padatth±ya nikkhitt±ni kaha½ t±ni d±r³n²”ti? “T±ni, s±mi, d±r³ni devena ayyassa dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa dinn±n²”ti. Atha kho vassak±ro br±hmaºo magadhamah±matto anattamano ahosi– “kathañhi n±ma devo devagahad±r³ni nagarapaµisaªkh±rik±ni ±padatth±ya nikkhitt±ni dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa dassat²”ti! Atha kho vassak±ro br±hmaºo magadhamah±matto yena r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± r±j±na½ m±gadha½ seniya½ bimbis±ra½ etadavoca– “sacca½ kira, devena [sacca½ kira deva devena (s².)] devagahad±r³ni nagarapaµisaªkh±rik±ni ±padatth±ya nikkhitt±ni dhaniyassa kumbhak±raputtassa dinn±n²”ti? “Ko evam±h±”ti? “D±rugahe gaºako, dev±”ti. “Tena hi, br±hmaºa, d±rugahe gaºaka½ ±º±peh²”ti. Atha kho vassak±ro br±hmaºo magadhamah±matto d±rugahe gaºaka½ bandha½ [baddha½ (s².)] ±º±pesi. Addasa kho ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto d±rugahe gaºaka½ bandha½ niyyam±na½. Disv±na d±rugahe gaºaka½ etadavoca– “kissa tva½, ±vuso, bandho niyy±s²”ti? “Tesa½, bhante, d±r³na½ kicc±”ti. “Gacch±vuso, ahampi ±gacch±m²”ti. “Eyy±si, bhante, pur±ha½ haññ±m²”ti.
88. Atha kho ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto yena rañño m±gadhassa seniyassa bimbis±rassa nivesana½ tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± paññatte ±sane nis²di. Atha kho r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro yen±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± ±yasmanta½ dhaniya½ kumbhak±raputta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro ±yasmanta½ dhaniya½ kumbhak±raputta½ etadavoca– “sacca½ kira may±, bhante, devagahad±r³ni nagarapaµisaªkh±rik±ni ±padatth±ya nikkhitt±ni ayyassa dinn±n²”ti? “Eva½, mah±r±j±”ti. “Maya½ kho, bhante, r±j±no n±ma bahukicc± bahukaraº²y±, datv±pi na sareyy±ma; iªgha, bhante, sar±peh²”ti. “Sarasi tva½, mah±r±ja, paµham±bhisitto evar³pi½ v±ca½ bh±sit±– “dinnaññeva samaºabr±hmaº±na½ tiºakaµµhodaka½ paribhuñjant³”ti. “Sar±maha½, bhante. Santi, bhante, samaºabr±hmaº± lajjino kukkuccak± sikkh±k±m±. Tesa½ appamattakepi kukkucca½ uppajjati. Tesa½ may± sandh±ya bh±sita½, tañca kho araññe apariggahita½. So tva½, bhante, tena lesena d±r³ni adinna½ haritu½ maññasi! Kathañhi n±ma m±diso samaºa½ v± br±hmaºa½ v± vijite vasanta½ haneyya v± bandheyya v± pabb±jeyya v±! Gaccha, bhante, lomena tva½ muttosi. M±ssu punapi evar³pa½ ak±s²”ti. Manuss± ujjh±yanti khiyyanti vip±centi– “alajjino ime samaº± sakyaputtiy± duss²l± mus±v±dino. Ime hi n±ma dhammac±rino samac±rino br±hmac±rino saccav±dino s²lavanto kaly±ºadhamm± paµij±nissanti! Natthi imesa½ s±mañña½, natthi imesa½ brahmañña½. Naµµha½ imesa½ s±mañña½, naµµha½ imesa½ brahmañña½. Kuto imesa½ s±mañña½, kuto imesa½ brahmañña½! Apagat± ime s±maññ±, apagat± ime brahmaññ±. R±j±nampi ime vañcenti, ki½ panaññe manusse”ti! Assosu½ kho bhikkh³ tesa½ manuss±na½ ujjh±yant±na½ khiyyant±na½ vip±cent±na½. Ye te bhikkh³ appicch± santuµµh± lajjino kukkuccak± sikkh±k±m± te ujjh±yanti khiyyanti vip±centi– “kathañhi n±ma ±yasm± dhaniyo kumbhak±raputto rañño d±r³ni adinna½ ±diyissat²”ti! Atha kho te bhikkh³ ±yasmanta½ dhaniya½ kumbhak±raputta½ anekapariy±yena vigarahitv± bhagavato etamattha½ ±rocesu½. Atha kho bhagav± etasmi½ nid±ne etasmi½ pakaraºe bhikkhusaªgha½ sannip±t±petv± ±yasmanta½ dhaniya½ kumbhak±raputta½ paµipucchi– “sacca½ kira tva½, dhaniya, rañño d±r³ni adinna½ ±diy²”ti? “Sacca½, bhagav±”ti. Vigarahi buddho bhagav±– “ananucchavika½, moghapurisa, ananulomika½ appatir³pa½ ass±maºaka½ akappiya½ akaraº²ya½. Kathañhi n±ma tva½, moghapurisa rañño d±r³ni adinna½ ±diyissasi! Neta½, moghapurisa, appasann±na½ v± pas±d±ya pasann±na½ v± bhiyyobh±v±ya; athakhveta½, moghapurisa, appasann±nañceva appas±d±ya pasann±nañca ekacc±na½ aññathatt±y±”ti.
Tena kho pana samayena aññataro pur±ºavoh±riko mah±matto bhikkh³su pabbajito bhagavato avid³re nisinno hoti. Atha kho bhagav± ta½ bhikkhu½ etadavoca– “kittakena kho bhikkhu r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro cora½ gahetv± hanati v± bandhati v± pabb±jeti v±”ti? “P±dena v±, bhagav±, p±d±rahena v±”ti [p±d±rahenav± atirekap±denav±ti (sy±.)]. Tena kho pana samayena r±jagahe pañcam±sako p±do hoti. Atha kho bhagav± ±yasmanta½ dhaniya½ kumbhak±raputta½ anekapariy±yena vigarahitv± dubbharat±ya…pe… evañca pana, bhikkhave, ima½ sikkh±pada½ uddiseyy±tha–
89. “Yo pana bhikkhu adinna½ theyyasaªkh±ta½ ±diyeyya, yath±r³pe adinn±d±ne r±j±no cora½ gahetv± haneyyu½ v± bandheyyu½ v± pabb±jeyyu½ v±– ‘corosi b±losi m³¼hosi thenos²’ti, tath±r³pa½ bhikkhu adinna½ ±diyam±no ayampi p±r±jiko hoti asa½v±so”ti.
Evañcida½ bhagavat± bhikkh³na½ sikkh±pada½ paññatta½ hoti.
90. Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiy± bhikkh³ rajakattharaºa½ gantv± rajakabhaº¹ika½ avaharitv± ±r±ma½ haritv± bh±jesu½. Bhikkh³ evam±ha½su– “mah±puññattha tumhe, ±vuso. Bahu½ tumh±ka½ c²vara½ uppannan”ti. “Kuto ±vuso, amh±ka½ puñña½, id±ni maya½ rajakattharaºa½ gantv± rajakabhaº¹ika½ avaharimh±”ti. “Nanu, ±vuso, bhagavat± sikkh±pada½ paññatta½. Kissa tumhe, ±vuso, rajakabhaº¹ika½ avaharitth±”ti “Sacca½, ±vuso, bhagavat± sikkh±pada½ paññatta½. Tañca kho g±me, no araññe”ti. “Nanu, ±vuso, tatheveta½ hoti. Ananucchavika½, ±vuso, ananulomika½ appatir³pa½ ass±maºaka½ akappiya½ akaraº²ya½. Kathañhi n±ma tumhe, ±vuso, rajakabhaº¹ika½ avaharissatha! Neta½, ±vuso, appasann±na½ v± pas±d±ya pasann±na½ v± bhiyyobh±v±ya; athakhveta½, ±vuso, appasann±nañceva appas±d±ya pasann±nañca ekacc±na½ aññathatt±y±”ti. Atha kho te bhikkh³ chabbaggiye bhikkh³ anekapariy±yena vigarahitv± bhagavato etamattha½ ±rocesu½. Atha kho bhagav± etasmi½ nid±ne etasmi½ pakaraºe bhikkhusaªgha½ sannip±t±petv± chabbaggiye bhikkh³ paµipucchi– “sacca½ kira tumhe, bhikkhave, rajakattharaºa½ gantv± rajakabhaº¹ika½ avaharitth±”ti? “Sacca½, bhagav±”ti. Vigarahi buddho bhagav±– “ananucchavika½, moghapuris±, ananulomika½ appaµir³pa½ ass±maºaka½ akappiya½ akaraº²ya½. Kathañhi n±ma tumhe, moghapuris±, rajakabhaº¹ika½ avaharissatha! Neta½, moghapuris±, appasann±na½ v± pas±d±ya pasann±na½ v± bhiyyobh±v±ya; atha khveta½, moghapuris±, appasann±nañceva appas±d±ya pasann±nañca ekacc±na½ aññathatt±y±”ti.
