15. Eva½ vutte, verañjo br±hmaºo bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “jeµµho bhava½ gotamo, seµµho bhava½ gotamo! Abhikkanta½, bho gotama, abhikkanta½, bho gotama!! Seyyath±pi, bho gotama, nikkujjita½ v± ukkujjeyya, paµicchanna½ v± vivareyya, m³¼hassa v± magga½ ±cikkheyya, andhak±re v± telapajjota½ dh±reyya– cakkhumanto r³p±ni dakkhant²ti, evameva½ bhot± gotamena anekapariy±yena dhammo pak±sito Es±ha½ bhavanta½ gotama½ saraºa½ gacch±mi dhammañca bhikkhusaªghañca. Tena kho pana samayena uttar±pathak± [uttar±hak± (s².)] assav±ºij± [assavaºij± (ka.)] pañcamattehi assasatehi verañja½ vass±v±sa½ upagat± honti. Tehi assamaº¹alik±su bhikkh³na½ patthapatthapulaka½ [patthapattham³laka½ (ka.)] paññatta½ hoti. Bhikkh³ pubbaºhasamaya½ niv±setv± pattac²varam±d±ya verañja½ piº¹±ya pavisitv± piº¹a½ alabham±n± assamaº¹alik±su piº¹±ya caritv± patthapatthapulaka½ ±r±ma½ ±haritv± udukkhale koµµetv± koµµetv± paribhuñjanti. ¾yasm± pan±nando patthapulaka½ sil±ya½ pisitv± bhagavato upan±meti. Assosi kho bhagav± udukkhalasadda½. J±nant±pi tath±gat± pucchanti, j±nant±pi na pucchanti; k±la½ viditv± pucchanti, k±la½ viditv± na pucchanti; atthasa½hita½ tath±gat± pucchanti, no anatthasa½hita½. Anatthasa½hite setugh±to tath±gat±na½. Dv²hi ±k±rehi buddh± bhagavanto bhikkh³ paµipucchanti– dhamma½ v± desess±ma, s±vak±na½ v± sikkh±pada½ paññapess±m±ti [paññ±pess±m±ti (s². sy±.)]. Atha kho bhagav± ±yasmanta½ ±nanda½ ±mantesi– “ki½ nu kho so, ±nanda, udukkhalasaddo”ti? Atha kho ±yasm± ±nando bhagavato etamattha½ ±rocesi “S±dhu s±dhu, ±nanda! Tumhehi, ±nanda sappurisehi vijita½. Pacchim± janat± s±lima½sodana½ atimaññissat²”ti.
17. Atha kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no [mah±moggal±no (ka.)] yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “etarahi, bhante, verañj± dubbhikkh± dv²hitik± setaµµhik± sal±k±vutt±. Na sukar± uñchena paggahena y±petu½. Imiss±, bhante, mah±pathaviy± heµµhimatala½ sampanna½– seyyath±pi khuddamadhu½ an²laka½ evamass±da½. S±dh±ha½, bhante, pathavi½ parivatteyya½. Bhikkh³ pappaµakoja½ paribhuñjissant²”ti. “Ye pana te, moggall±na, pathavinissit± p±º± te katha½ karissas²”ti? “Ek±ha½, bhante, p±ºi½ abhinimminiss±mi– seyyath±pi mah±pathav². Ye pathavinissit± p±º± te tattha saªk±mess±mi. Ekena hatthena pathavi½ parivattess±m²”ti. “Ala½, moggall±na, m± te rucci pathavi½ parivattetu½. Atha kho ±yasmato s±riputtassa rahogatassa paµisall²nassa eva½ cetaso parivitakko udap±di– “katames±na½ kho buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ brahmacariya½ na ciraµµhitika½ ahosi; katames±na½ buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ brahmacariya½ ciraµµhitika½ ahos²”ti? Atha kho ±yasm± s±riputto s±yanhasamaya½ [s±yaºhasamaya½ (s².)] paµisall±n± vuµµhito yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho ±yasm± s±riputto bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “idha mayha½, bhante, rahogatassa paµisall²nassa eva½ cetaso parivitakko udap±di– ‘katames±na½ kho buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ brahmacariya½ na ciraµµhitika½ ahosi, katames±na½ buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ brahmacariya½ ciraµµhitika½ ahos²’ti. ‘Katames±na½ nu kho, bhante, buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ brahmacariya½ na ciraµµhitika½ ahosi, katames±na½ buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ brahmacariya½ ciraµµhitika½ ahos²”’ti?
“Bhagavato ca, s±riputta, vipassissa bhagavato ca sikhissa bhagavato ca vessabhussa brahmacariya½ na ciraµµhitika½ ahosi. Bhagavato ca, s±riputta, kakusandhassa bhagavato ca koº±gamanassa bhagavato ca kassapassa brahmacariya½ ciraµµhitika½ ahos²”ti.
19. “Ko nu kho bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena bhagavato ca vipassissa bhagavato ca sikhissa bhagavato ca vessabhussa brahmacariya½ na ciraµµhitika½ ahos²”ti? “Bhagav± ca, s±riputta, vipass² bhagav± ca sikh² bhagav± ca vessabh³ kil±suno ahesu½ s±vak±na½ vitth±rena dhamma½ desetu½. Appakañca nesa½ ahosi sutta½ geyya½ veyy±karaºa½ g±th± ud±na½ itivuttaka½ j±taka½ abbhutadhamma½ vedalla½. Apaññatta½ s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½. Anuddiµµha½ p±timokkha½. Tesa½ buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ antaradh±nena buddh±nubuddh±na½ s±vak±na½ antaradh±nena ye te pacchim± s±vak± n±n±n±m± n±n±gott± n±n±jacc± n±n±kul± pabbajit± te ta½ brahmacariya½ khippaññeva antaradh±pesu½. Seyyath±pi, s±riputta, n±n±pupph±ni phalake nikkhitt±ni suttena asaªgahit±ni t±ni v±to vikirati vidhamati viddha½seti. Ta½ kissa hetu? Yath± ta½ suttena asaªgahitatt±. “Akil±suno ca te bhagavanto ahesu½ s±vake cetas± ceto paricca ovaditu½. Bh³tapubba½, s±riputta, vessabh³ bhagav± araha½ samm±sambuddho aññatarasmi½ bhi½sanake [bh²sanake (ka.)] vanasaº¹e sahassa½ bhikkhusaªgha½ cetas± ceto paricca ovadati anus±sati– ‘eva½ vitakketha, m± eva½ vitakkayittha; eva½ manasikarotha, m± eva½ manas±kattha [manas±karittha (ka.)]; ida½ pajahatha, ida½ upasampajja viharath±’ti. Atha kho, s±riputta, tassa bhikkhusahassassa vessabhun± bhagavat± arahat± samm±sambuddhena eva½ ovadiyam±n±na½ eva½ anus±siyam±n±na½ anup±d±ya ±savehi citt±ni vimucci½su. Tatra suda½, s±riputta, bhi½sanakassa vanasaº¹assa bhi½sanakatasmi½ hoti– yo koci av²tar±go ta½ vanasaº¹a½ pavisati, yebhuyyena lom±ni ha½santi. Aya½ kho, s±riputta, hetu aya½ paccayo yena bhagavato ca vipassissa bhagavato ca sikhissa bhagavato ca vessabhussa brahmacariya½ na ciraµµhitika½ ahos²”ti.
20. “Ko pana, bhante, hetu ko paccayo yena bhagavato ca kakusandhassa bhagavato ca koº±gamanassa bhagavato ca kassapassa brahmacariya½ ciraµµhitika½ ahos²”ti? “Bhagav± ca, s±riputta, kakusandho bhagav± ca koº±gamano bhagav± ca kassapo akil±suno ahesu½ s±vak±na½ vitth±rena dhamma½ desetu½. Bahuñca nesa½ ahosi sutta½ geyya½ veyy±karaºa½ g±th± ud±na½ itivuttaka½ j±taka½ abbhutadhamma½ vedalla½, paññatta½ s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½, uddiµµha½ p±timokkha½. Tesa½ buddh±na½ bhagavant±na½ antaradh±nena buddh±nubuddh±na½ s±vak±na½ antaradh±nena ye te pacchim± s±vak± n±n±n±m± n±n±gott± n±n±jacc± n±n±kul± pabbajit± te ta½ brahmacariya½ cira½ d²ghamaddh±na½ µhapesu½. 21. Atha kho ±yasm± s±riputto uµµh±y±san± eka½sa½ uttar±saªga½ karitv± yena bhagav± tenañjali½ paº±metv± bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “etassa, bhagav±, k±lo! Etassa, sugata, k±lo! Ya½ bhagav± s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½ paññapeyya [paññ±peyya (s². sy±.)], uddiseyya p±timokkha½, yathayida½ brahmacariya½ addhaniya½ assa ciraµµhitikan”ti. “¾gamehi tva½, s±riputta ¾gamehi tva½, s±riputta! Tath±gatova tattha k±la½ j±nissati. Na t±va, s±riputta, satth± s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½ paññapeti uddisati [na uddisati (s².)] p±timokkha½ y±va na idhekacce ±savaµµh±n²y± dhamm± saªghe p±tubhavanti. Yato ca kho, s±riputta, idhekacce ±savaµµh±n²y± dhamm± saªghe p±tubhavanti, atha satth± s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½ paññapeti uddissati p±timokkha½ tesa½yeva ±savaµµh±n²y±na½ dhamm±na½ paµigh±t±ya. Na t±va, s±riputta, idhekacce ±savaµµh±n²y± dhamm± saªghe p±tubhavanti y±va na saªgho rattaññumahatta½ patto hoti. Atha kho bhagav± ±yasmanta½ ±nanda½ ±mantesi– “±ciººa½ kho paneta½, ±nanda, tath±gat±na½ yehi nimantit± vassa½ vasanti, na te anapaloketv± janapadac±rika½ pakkamanti. ¾y±m±nanda, verañja½ br±hmaºa½ apalokess±m±”ti. “Eva½ bhante”ti kho ±yasm± ±nando bhagavato paccassosi. Atha kho bhagav± niv±setv± pattac²varam±d±ya ±yasmat± ±nandena pacch±samaºena yena verañjassa br±hmaºassa nivesana½ tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± paññatte ±sane nis²di. Atha kho verañjo br±hmaºo yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di.
