R±j± ta½ pavatti½ sutv± therassa sakk±ra½ katv± “mayi n±ma rajja½ k±rente eva½ bhikkh³na½ paccay± dullabh±”ti nagarassa cat³su dv±resu pokkharaºiyo k±r±petv± bhesajjassa p³r±petv± d±pesi.
Tena kira samayena p±µaliputtassa cat³su dv±resu catt±ri satasahass±ni, sabh±ya½ satasahassanti divase divase pañcasatasahass±ni rañño uppajjanti. Tato r±j± nigrodhattherassa devasika½ satasahassa½ visajjesi. Buddhassa cetiye gandham±l±d²hi p³janatth±ya satasahassa½ Dhammassa satasahassa½, ta½ dhammadhar±na½ bahussut±na½ catupaccayatth±ya upan²yati. Pabbajja½ alabham±n±pi sayameva muº¹etv± k±s±y±ni vatth±ni acch±detv± vih±resu vicarant± uposathampi pav±raºampi saªghakammampi gaºakammampi pavisanti. Bhikkh³ tehi saddhi½ uposatha½ na karonti. Tad± moggaliputtatissatthero “uppanna½ d±ni ida½ adhikaraºa½, ta½ nacirasseva kakkha¼a½ bhavissati. Na kho paneta½ sakk± imesa½ majjhe vasantena v³pasametun”ti mahindattherassa gaºa½ n²yy±tetv± attan± ph±suvih±rena viharituk±mo ahogaªgapabbata½ agam±si. Tepi kho titthiy± bhikkhusaªghena dhammena vinayena satthus±sanena niggayham±n±pi dhammavinay±nulom±ya paµipattiy± asaºµhahant± anekar³pa½ s±sanassa abbudañca malañca kaºµakañca samuµµh±pesu½. Keci aggi½ paricaranti, keci pañc±tapena t±penti, keci ±dicca½ anuparivattanti, keci “dhammañca vinayañca vobhindiss±m±”ti paggaºhi½su. Tad± bhikkhusaªgho na tehi saddhi½ uposatha½ v± pav±raºa½ v± ak±si. Asok±r±me sattavass±ni uposatho upacchijji. Raññopi etamattha½ ±rocesu½. R±j± eka½ amacca½ ±º±pesi– “vih±ra½ gantv± adhikaraºa½ v³pasametv± uposatha½ k±r±peh²”ti. Amacco r±j±na½ paµipucchitu½ avisahanto aññe amacce upasaªkamitv± ±ha– “r±j± ma½ ‘vih±ra½ gantv± adhikaraºa½ v³pasametv± uposatha½ k±r±peh²’ti pahiºi. Katha½ nu kho adhikaraºa½ v³pasammat²”ti? Te ±ha½su “maya½ eva½ sallakkhema– ‘yath± n±ma paccanta½ v³pasament± core gh±tenti, evameva ye uposatha½ na karonti, te m±retuk±mo r±j± bhavissat²”’ti. Atha so amacco vih±ra½ gantv± bhikkhusaªgha½ sannip±tetv± ±ha– “aha½ raññ± ‘uposatha½ k±r±peh²’ti pesito. Karotha d±ni, bhante, uposathan”ti. Bhikkh³ “na maya½ titthiyehi saddhi½ uposatha½ karom±”ti ±ha½su. Atha amacco ther±sanato paµµh±ya asin± s²s±ni p±tetu½ ±raddho.
Addas± kho tissatthero ta½ amacca½ tath± vippaµipanna½. Tissatthero n±ma na yo v± so v±, rañño ekam±tiko bh±t± tissakum±ro n±ma, ta½ kira r±j± patt±bhiseko oparajje µhapesi. So ekadivasa½ vanac±ra½ gato addasa mahanta½ migasaªgha½ cittak²¼±ya k²¼anta½. Disv±nassa etadahosi– “ime t±va tiºabhakkh± mig± eva½ k²¼anti, ime pana samaº± r±jakule paº²t±ni bhojan±ni bhuñjitv± muduk±su seyy±su sayam±n± ki½ n±ma k²¼ita½ na k²¼issant²”ti! So tato ±gantv± ima½ attano vitakka½ rañño ±rocesi. R±j± “aµµh±ne kukkucc±yita½ kum±rena! Handa, na½ eva½ saññ±pess±m²”ti ekadivasa½ kenaci k±raºena kuddho viya hutv± “ehi sattadivasena rajja½ sampaµiccha, tato ta½ gh±tess±m²”ti maraºabhayena tajjetv± tamattha½ saññ±pesi. So kira kum±ro “sattame ma½ divase m±ressat²”ti na cittar³pa½ nh±yi, na bhuñji, na supi, ativiya l³khasar²ro ahosi. Tato na½ r±j± pucchi– “kissa tva½ evar³po j±to”ti? “Maraºabhayena, dev±”ti. “Are, tva½ n±ma paricchinnamaraºa½ sampassam±no vissattho na k²¼asi? Bhikkh³ ass±sapass±sanibaddha½ maraºa½ pekkham±n± katha½ k²¼issant²”ti! Tato pabhuti kum±ro s±sane pas²di.
So puna ekadivasa½ migava½ nikkhamitv± araññe anuvicaram±no addasa yonakamah±dhammarakkhitatthera½ aññatarena hatthin±gena s±las±kha½ gahetv± b²jiyam±na½ nisinna½. Disv± p±mojjaj±to cintesi– “kad± nu kho ahampi aya½ mah±thero viya pabbajeyya½! Siy± nu kho so divaso”ti. Thero tass±saya½ viditv± tassa passantasseva ±k±se uppatitv± asok±r±me pokkharaºiy± udakatale µhatv± c²varañca uttar±saªgañca ±k±se laggetv± nh±yitu½ ±raddho.
Kum±ro therass±nubh±va½ disv± ativiya pasanno “ajjeva pabbajiss±m²”ti nivattitv± rañño ±rocesi– “pabbajiss±maha½, dev±”ti. R±j± anekappak±ra½ y±citv±pi ta½ nivattetu½ asakkonto asok±r±magaman²yamagga½ alaªk±r±petv± kum±ra½ chaºavesa½ g±h±petv± alaªkat±ya sen±ya pariv±r±petv± vih±ra½ nesi. “Yuvar±j± kira pabbajissat²”ti sutv± bah³ bhikkh³ pattac²var±ni paµiy±desu½. Kum±ro rañño catuvass±bhisekak±le pabbajito. Athaññopi rañño bh±gineyyo saªghamitt±ya s±miko aggibrahm± n±ma kum±ro atthi. Saªghamitt± ta½ paµicca ekameva putta½ vij±yi. Sopi “yuvar±j± pabbajito”ti sutv± r±j±na½ upasaªkamitv±– “ahampi, deva, pabbajiss±m²”ti y±ci. “Pabbaja, t±t±”ti ca raññ± anuññ±to ta½divasameva pabbaji.

R±j± sutv±va– “are! Ki½ pana, tva½, may± bhikkh³ gh±tetu½ pesito”ti t±vadeva sar²re uppannad±ho hutv± vih±ra½ gantv± there bhikkh³ pucchi– “aya½, bhante, amacco may± an±ºattova eva½ ak±si, kassa nu kho imin± p±pena bhavitabban”ti? Ekacce ther±, “aya½ tava vacanena ak±si, tuyheta½ p±pan”ti ±ha½su. Ekacce “ubhinnampi vo eta½ p±pan”ti ±ha½su.
