“Ki½ pana, bhante, dukkh± vedan± tath±gatassa k±ye uppannapubb±”ti? “¾ma, mah±r±ja, r±jagahe bhagavato p±do sakalik±ya [sakkhalik±ya (sy±. ka.)] khato, lohitapakkhandik±b±dho uppanno, k±ye abhisanne j²vakena vireko k±rito, v±t±b±dhe uppanne upaµµh±kena therena uŗhodaka½ pariyiµµhan”ti.
“Yadi bhante n±gasena, tath±gato sabba½ akusala½ jh±petv± sabbańńuta½ patto, tena hi bhagavato p±do sakalik±ya khato, lohitapakkhandik± ca ±b±dho uppannoti ya½ vacana½, ta½ micch±. Yadi tath±gatassa p±do sakalik±ya khato, lohitapakkhandik± ca ±b±dho uppanno, tena hi tath±gato sabba½ akusala½ jh±petv± sabbańńuta½ pattoti tampi vacana½ micch±. Natthi, bhante, vin± kammena vedayita½, sabba½ ta½ vedayita½ kammam³laka½, ta½ kammeneva vedayati, ayampi ubhato koµiko pańho tav±nuppatto, so tay± nibb±hitabbo”ti [nibb±yitabboti (ka.)].
“Na hi, mah±r±ja, sabba½ ta½ vedayita½ kammam³laka½. Aµµhahi, mah±r±ja, k±raŗehi vedayit±ni uppajjanti, yehi k±raŗehi puth³ satt± vedan± vediyanti. Katamehi aµµhahi? “Yadi, mah±r±ja, tepi sabbe kammasamuµµh±n±va ±b±dh± bhaveyyu½, na tesa½ koµµh±sato lakkhaŗ±ni bhaveyyu½. V±to kho, mah±r±ja, kuppam±no dasavidhena kuppati s²tena uŗhena jighacch±ya vip±s±ya atibhuttena µh±nena padh±nena ±dh±vanena upakkamena kammavip±kena. Tatra ye te nava vidh±, na te at²te, na an±gate, vattam±nake bhave uppajjanti, tasm± na vattabb± ‘kammasambhav± sabb± vedan±’ti. Pitta½, mah±r±ja, kuppam±na½ tividhena kuppati s²tena uŗhena visamabhojanena. Semha½, mah±r±ja, kuppam±na½ tividhena kuppati s²tena uŗhena annap±nena. Yo ca, mah±r±ja, v±to yańca pitta½ yańca semha½, tehi tehi kopehi kuppitv± miss² hutv± saka½ saka½ vedana½ ±ka¹¹hati. Utupariŗ±maj±, mah±r±ja, vedan± utupariy±mena uppajjati. Visamaparih±raj± vedan± visamaparih±rena uppajjati. Opakkamik±, mah±r±ja, vedan± atthi kiriy±, atthi kammavip±k±, kammavip±kaj± vedan± pubbe katena kammena uppajjati. Iti kho, mah±r±ja, appa½ kammavip±kaja½, bahutara½ avasesa½. Tattha b±l± ‘sabba½ kammavip±kaja½ yev±’ti atidh±vanti. Ta½ kamma½ na sakk± vin± buddhań±ŗena vavatth±na½ k±tu½.

Devadatto hi, mah±r±ja, bah³ni j±tisatasahass±ni tath±gate ±gh±ta½ bandhi, so tena ±gh±tena mahati½ garu½ sila½ gahetv± ‘matthake p±tess±m²’ti muńci, athańńe dve sel± ±gantv± ta½ sila½ tath±gata½ asampatta½ yeva sampaµicchi½su, t±sa½ pah±rena papaµik± bhijjitv± bhagavato p±de patitv± ruhira½ [nipatitv± rudhira½ (sy±.)] upp±desi, kammavip±kato v±, mah±r±ja, bhagavato es± vedan± nibbatt± kiriyato v±, tatuddha½ natthańń± vedan±.
“Yath±, mah±r±ja, khettaduµµhat±ya v± b²ja½ na sambhavati b²jaduµµhat±ya v±. Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, kammavip±kato v± bhagavato es± vedan± nibbatt± kiriyato v±, tatuddha½ natthańń± vedan±.
“Yath± v± pana, mah±r±ja, koµµhaduµµhat±ya v± bhojana½ visama½ pariŗamati ±h±raduµµhat±ya v±, evameva kho, mah±r±ja, kammavip±kato v± bhagavato es± vedan± nibbatt± kiriyato v±, tatuddha½ natthańń± vedan±. Api ca, mah±r±ja, natthi bhagavato kammavip±kaj± vedan±, natthi visamaparih±raj± vedan±, avasesehi samuµµh±nehi bhagavato vedan± uppajjati, t±ya ca pana vedan±ya na sakk± bhagavanta½ j²vit± voropetu½.
“Nipatanti mah±r±ja, imasmi½ c±tumah±bh³tike [c±tummah±bh³tike (s².)] k±ye iµµh±niµµh± subh±subhavedan±. Idha, mah±r±ja, ±k±se khitto le¹¹u mah±pathaviy± nipatati, api nu kho so, mah±r±ja, le¹¹u pubbe katena mah±pathaviy± nipat²”ti? “Na hi, bhante, natthi so, bhante, hetu mah±pathaviy±, yena hetun± mah±pathav² kusal±kusalavip±ka½ paµisa½vedeyya, paccuppannena bhante, akammakena hetun± so le¹¹u mah±pathaviya½ nipatati. Yath±, mah±r±ja, mah±pathav², eva½ tath±gato daµµhabbo. Yath± le¹¹u pubbe akatena mah±pathaviya½ nipatati, evameva kho, mah±r±ja, tath±gatassa pubbe akatena s± sakalik±p±de nipatit±.
“Idha pana, mah±r±ja, manuss± mah±pathavi½ bhindanti ca khaŗanti ca, api nu kho, mah±r±ja, te manuss± pubbe katena mah±pathavi½ bhindanti ca khaŗanti c±”ti? “Na hi bhante”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, y± s± sakalik± bhagavato p±de nipatit±, na s± sakalik± pubbe katena bhagavato p±de nipatit±. Yopi, mah±r±ja, bhagavato lohitapakkhandik±b±dho uppanno, sopi ±b±dho na pubbe katena uppanno, sannip±tikeneva uppanno, ye keci, mah±r±ja, bhagavato k±yik± ±b±dh± uppann±, na te kamm±bhinibbatt±, channa½ etesa½ samuµµh±n±na½ ańńatarato nibbatt±.
“Bh±sitampeta½, mah±r±ja, bhagavat± dev±tidevena sa½yuttanik±yavaralańchake mo¼iyas²vake [moliyasivake (sy±. ka.) sa½. ni. 4.269 passitabba½] veyy±karaŗe–
“‘Pittasamuµµh±n±nipi kho, s²vaka, idhekacc±ni vedayit±ni uppajjanti. S±mampi kho eta½, s²vaka, veditabba½, yath± pittasamuµµh±n±nipi idhekacc±ni vedayit±ni uppajjanti. Lokassapi kho eta½, s²vaka, saccasammata½, yath± pittasamuµµh±n±nipi idhekacc±ni vedayit±ni uppajjanti. Tatra, s²vaka, ye te samaŗabr±hmaŗ± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino “ya½ kińc±ya½ purisapuggalo paµisa½vedeti sukha½ v± dukkha½ v± adukkhamasukha½ v±, sabba½ ta½ pubbe katahet³”ti Yańca s±ma½ ń±ta½, tańca atidh±vanti, yańca loke saccasammata½, tańca atidh±vanti.
