5. “Bhante n±gasena, tumhe eva½ bhaºatha ‘sivir±jena y±cakassa cakkh³ni dinn±ni, andhassa sato puna dibbacakkh³ni uppann±n²’ti, etampi vacana½ sakasaµa½ saniggaha½ sadosa½ ‘hetusamuggh±te ahetusmi½ avatthusmi½ natthi dibbacakkhussa upp±do’ti sutte vutta½, yadi, bhante n±gasena, sivir±jena y±cakassa cakkh³ni dinn±ni, tena hi ‘puna dibbacakkh³ni uppann±n²’ti ya½ vacana½, ta½ micch±; yadi dibbacakkh³ni uppann±ni, tena hi ‘sivir±jena y±cakassa cakkh³ni dinn±n²’ti ya½ vacana½, tampi micch±. Ayampi ubhato koµiko pañho gaºµhitopi gaºµhitaro veµhatopi veµhataro gahanatopi gahanataro, so tav±nuppatto, tattha chandamabhijanehi nibb±han±ya parav±d±na½ niggah±y±”ti.
“Dinn±ni mah±r±ja, sivir±jena y±cakassa cakkh³ni, tattha m± vimati½ upp±dehi, puna dibb±ni ca cakkh³ni uppann±ni, tatth±pi m± vimati½ janeh²”ti. “Api nu kho, bhante n±gasena, hetusamuggh±te ahetusmi½ avatthusmi½ dibbacakkhu uppajjat²”ti? “Na hi, mah±r±j±”ti. “Ki½ pana, bhante, ettha k±raºa½, yena k±raºena hetusamuggh±te ahetusmi½ avatthusmi½ dibbacakkhu uppajjati, iªgha t±va k±raºena ma½ saññ±peh²”ti?
“Ki½ pana, mah±r±ja, atthi loke sacca½ n±ma, yena saccav±dino saccakiriya½ karont²”ti? “¾ma, bhante, atthi loke sacca½ n±ma, saccena, bhante n±gasena, saccav±dino saccakiriya½ katv± deva½ vass±penti, aggi½ nibb±penti, visa½ paµihananti, aññampi vividha½ kattabba½ karont²”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, yujjati sameti sivir±jassa saccabalena dibbacakkh³ni uppann±n²ti, saccabalena, mah±r±ja, avatthusmi½ dibbacakkhu uppajjati, sacca½ yeva tattha vatthu bhavati dibbacakkhussa upp±d±ya.
“Yath±, mah±r±ja, ye keci satt± saccamanug±yanti ‘mah±megho pavassat³’ti, tesa½ saha saccamanug²tena mah±megho pavassati, api nu kho, mah±r±ja, atthi ±k±se vassahetu sannicito ‘yena hetun± mah±megho pavassat²”’ti? “Na hi, bhante, sacca½ yeva tattha hetu bhavati mahato meghassa pavassan±y±”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, natthi tassa pakatihetu, sacca½ yevettha vatthu bhavati dibbacakkhussa upp±d±y±ti.
“Yath± v± pana, mah±r±ja, ye keci satt± saccamanug±yanti ‘jalitapajjalitamah±-aggikkhandho paµinivattat³’ti, tesa½ saha saccamanug²tena jalitapajjalitamah±-aggikkhandho khaºena paµinivattati. Api nu kho, mah±r±ja, atthi tasmi½ jalitapajjalite mah±-aggikkhandhe hetu sannicito ‘yena hetun± jalitapajjalitamah±-aggikkhandho khaºena paµinivattat²”ti? “Na hi, bhante, sacca½ yeva tattha vatthu hoti tassa jalitapajjalitassa mah±-aggikkhandhassa khaºena paµinivattan±y±”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, natthi tassa pakatihetu, sacca½ yevettha vatthu bhavati dibbacakkhussa upp±d±y±ti.
“Yath± v± pana, mah±r±ja, ye keci satt± saccamanug±yanti ‘visa½ hal±hala½ agada½ bhavat³’ti. Tesa½ saha saccamanug²tena visa½ hal±hala½ khaºena agada½ bhavati, api nu kho, mah±r±ja, atthi tasmi½ hal±halavise hetu sannicito ‘yena hetun± visa½ hal±hala½ khaºena agada½ bhavat²”’ti? “Na hi, bhante, sacca½ yeva tattha hetu bhavati visassa hal±halassa khaºena paµigh±t±y±”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, vin± pakatihetu½ sacca½ yevettha vatthu bhavati dibbacakkhussa upp±d±y±ti.
“Catunnampi, mah±r±ja, ariyasacc±na½ paµivedh±ya natthañña½ vatthu, sacca½ vatthu½ katv± catt±ri ariyasacc±ni paµivijjhant²ti. Atthi, mah±r±ja, c²navisaye c²nar±j±, so mah±samudde k²¼ituk±mo [bali½ k±tuk±mo (s². p².)] catum±se catum±se saccakiriya½ katv± saha rathena antomah±samudde yojana½ pavisati, tassa rathas²sassa purato purato mah±v±rikkhandho paµikkamati, nikkhantassa puna ottharati, api nu kho, mah±r±ja, so mah±samuddo sadevamanussenapi lokena pakatik±yabalena sakk± paµikkam±petun”ti? “Atiparittakepi, bhante, ta¼±ke udaka½ na sakk± sadevamanussenapi lokena pakatik±yabalena paµikkam±petu½, ki½ pana mah±samudde udakan”ti? “Imin±pi, mah±r±ja, k±raºena saccabala½ ñ±tabba½ ‘natthi ta½ µh±na½, ya½ saccena na pattabban’ti.
“Nagare, mah±r±ja, p±µaliputte asoko dhammar±j± sanegamaj±napada-amaccabhaµabalamah±mattehi parivuto gaªga½ nadi½ [gaªg±nadi½ (s².)] navasalilasampuººa½ samatitthika½ sambharita½ pañcayojanasat±y±ma½ yojanaputhula½ sandam±na½ disv± amacce evam±ha ‘atthi koci, bhaºe, samattho, yo ima½ mah±gaªga½ paµisota½ sand±petun’ti. Amacc± ±ha½su ‘dukkara½ dev±’ti.
“Tasmi½ yeva gaªg±k³le µhit± bandhumat² n±ma gaºik± assosi raññ± kira eva½ vutta½ ‘sakk± nu kho ima½ mah±gaªga½ paµisota½ sand±petun’ti, s± evam±ha ‘ahañhi nagare p±µaliputte gaºik± r³p³paj²vin² antimaj²vik±, mama t±va r±j± saccakiriya½ passat³’ti. Atha s± saccakiriya½ ak±si, saha tass± saccakiriy±ya khaºena s± mah±gaªg± ga¼aga¼±yant² paµisota½ sandittha mahato janak±yassa passato.
“Atha r±j± gaªg±ya ±vaµµa-³mivegajanita½ hal±halasadda½ sutv± vimhito acchariyabbhutaj±to amacce evam±ha ‘kiss±ya½, bhaºe, mah±gaªg± paµisota½ sandat²’ti? ‘Bandhumat², mah±r±ja, gaºik± tava vacana½ sutv± saccakiriya½ ak±si, tass± saccakiriy±ya mah±gaªg± uddha½mukh± sandat²’ti.
“Atha sa½viggahadayo r±j± turitaturito saya½ gantv± ta½ gaºika½ pucchi ‘sacca½ kira, je tay± saccakiriy±ya aya½ gaªg± paµisota½ sand±pit±’ti? ‘¾ma dev±’ti. R±j± ±ha ‘ki½ te tattha bala½ atthi, ko v± te vacana½ ±diyati anummatto, kena tva½ balena ima½ mah±gaªga½ paµisota½ sand±pes²’ti? S± ±ha ‘saccabalen±ha½, mah±r±ja, ima½ mah±gaªga½ paµisota½ sand±pesin’ti. R±j± ±ha ‘ki½ te saccabala½ atthi coriy± dhuttiy± asatiy± chinnik±ya p±piy± bhinnas²l±ya [p±pik±ya bhinnas²m±ya (s².)] hiri-atikkantik±ya andhajanapalobhik±y±’ti. ‘Sacca½, mah±r±ja, t±disik± aha½, t±disik±yapi me, mah±r±ja, saccakiriy± atthi, y±y±ha½ iccham±n± sadevakampi loka½ parivatteyyan’ti. R±j± ±ha ‘katam± pana s± hoti saccakiriy±, iªgha ma½ s±veh²’ti. ‘Yo me, mah±r±ja, dhana½ deti khattiyo v± br±hmaºo v± vesso v± suddo v± añño v± koci, tesa½ samaka½ yeva upaµµhah±mi, “khattiyo”ti viseso natthi, “suddo”ti atimaññan± [atimaññam±no (ka.)] natthi, anunayappaµighavippamutt± dhanass±mika½ paricar±mi, es± me deva saccakiriy±, y±y±ha½ ima½ mah±gaªga½ paµisota½ sand±pesin’ti.
“Itipi, mah±r±ja, sacce µhit± na kiñci attha½ na vindanti. Dinn±ni ca, mah±r±ja, sivir±jena y±cakassa cakkh³ni dibbacakkh³ni ca uppann±ni, tañca saccakiriy±ya. Ya½ pana sutte vutta½ ‘ma½sacakkhusmi½ naµµhe ahetusmi½ avatthusmi½ natthi dibbacakkhussa upp±do’ti. Ta½ bh±van±maya½ cakkhu½ sandh±ya vutta½, evameta½, mah±r±ja, dh±reh²”ti. “S±dhu, bhante n±gasena, sunibbeµhito pañho, suniddiµµho niggaho, sumaddit± parav±d±, evameta½ tath± sampaµicch±m²”ti.
