Yath±, mah±r±ja, manuss± nibbute aggikkhandhe anup±d±ne attano th±mabalav²riyena paccattapurisak±rena kaµµha½ manthayitv± aggi½ nibbattetv± tena aggin± aggikaraº²y±ni kamm±ni karonti, evameva kho devamanuss± tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva dh±turatana½ vatthu½ karitv± tath±gatassa ñ±ºaratan±rammaºena samm±paµipatti½ sevant± tisso sampattiyo paµilabhanti, imin±pi, mah±r±ja, k±raºena tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphalo.
“Aparampi, mah±r±ja, uttari½ k±raºa½ suºohi yena k±raºena tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphalo. “Aparampi, mah±r±ja, uttari½ k±raºa½ suºohi parav±d±na½ niggah±ya. Yath±, mah±r±ja, puriso bheri½ ±koµetv± sadda½ nibbatteyya, yo so bherisaddo purisena nibbattito, so saddo antaradh±yeyya, api nu kho so, mah±r±ja, saddo s±diyati puna nibbatt±panan”ti? “Na hi, bhante, antarahito so saddo, natthi tassa puna upp±d±ya ±bhogo v± manasik±ro v±, saki½ nibbatte bherisadde antarahite so bherisaddo samucchinno hoti. Bher² pana, bhante, paccayo hoti saddassa nibbattiy±, atha puriso paccaye sati attajena v±y±mena bheri½ akoµetv± sadda½ nibbattet²”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, bhagav± s²lasam±dhipaññ±vimuttivimuttiñ±ºadassanaparibh±vita½ dh±turatanañca dhammañca vinayañca anusiµµhañca [anusatthiñca (s². p².)] satth±ra½ µhapayitv± saya½ anup±dises±ya nibb±nadh±tuy± parinibbuto, na ca parinibbute bhagavati sampattil±bho upacchinno hoti, bhavadukkhapaµip²¼it± satt± dh±turatanañca dhammañca vinayañca anusiµµhañca paccaya½ karitv± sampattik±m± sampattiyo paµilabhanti, imin±pi, mah±r±ja, k±raºena tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphaloti.
“Diµµhañceta½, mah±r±ja, bhagavat± an±gatamaddh±na½. Kathitañca bhaºitañca ±cikkhitañca ‘siy± kho pan±nanda, tumh±ka½ evamassa at²tasatthuka½ p±vacana½ natthi no satth±ti, na kho paneta½, ±nanda, eva½ daµµhabba½, yo vo, ±nanda, may± dhammo ca vinayo ca desito paññatto, so vo mamaccayena satth±’ti. Parinibbutassa tath±gatassa as±diyantassa kato adhik±ro vañjho bhavati aphaloti, ta½ tesa½ titthiy±na½ vacana½ micch± abh³ta½ vitatha½ alika½ viruddha½ vipar²ta½ dukkhad±yaka½ dukkhavip±ka½ ap±yagaman²yanti.
“Aparampi, mah±r±ja, uttari½ k±raºa½ suºohi yena k±raºena tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphalo. S±diyati nu kho, mah±r±ja, aya½ mah±pathav² ‘sabbab²j±ni mayi sa½viruhant³”’ti? “Na hi, bhante”ti. “Kissa pana t±ni, mah±r±ja, b²j±ni as±diyantiy± mah±pathaviy± sa½viruhitv± da¼ham³lajaµ±patiµµhit± khandhas±ras±kh±parivitthiºº± pupphaphaladhar± hont²”ti? “As±diyant²pi, bhante, mah±pathav² tesa½ b²j±na½ vatthu½ hoti paccaya½ deti viruhan±ya, t±ni b²j±ni ta½ vatthu½ niss±ya tena paccayena sa½viruhitv± da¼ham³lajaµ±patiµµhit± khandhas±ras±kh±parivitthiºº± pupphaphaladhar± hont²”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, titthiy± sake v±de naµµh± honti hat± viruddh±, sace te bhaºanti ‘as±diyantassa kato adhik±ro vañjho bhavati aphalo’ ti.

S±diyanti nu kho, mah±r±ja, ime manuss± ime aµµhanavuti rog± k±ye nibbattant³”ti? “Na hi, bhante”ti. “Kissa pana te, mah±r±ja, rog± as±diyant±na½ k±ye nipatant²”ti? “Pubbe katena, bhante, duccariten±”ti. “Yadi, mah±r±ja, pubbe kata½ akusala½ idha vedan²ya½ hoti, tena hi, mah±r±ja, pubbe katampi idha katampi kusal±kusala½ kamma½ avañjha½ bhavati saphalanti. “Sutapubba½ pana tay±, mah±r±ja, nandako n±ma yakkho thera½ s±riputta½ ±s±dayitv± pathavi½ paviµµho”ti? “¾ma, bhante, suyyati, loke p±kaµo eso”ti. “Api nu kho, mah±r±ja, thero s±riputto s±diyi nandakassa yakkhassa mah±pathavigilanan”ti [pavattam±nepi (sy±.)]. “Ubbattiyantepi, bhante, sadevake loke patam±nepi cham±ya½ candimas³riye vikirantepi sinerupabbatar±je thero s±riputto na parassa dukkha½ s±diyeyya. Ta½ kissa hetu? Yena hetun± thero s±riputto kujjheyya v± dusseyya v±, so hetu therassa s±riputtassa sam³hato samucchinno, hetuno samuggh±titatt±, bhante, thero s±riputto j²vitah±rakepi kopa½ na kareyy±”ti. “Yadi, mah±r±ja thero s±riputto nandakassa yakkhassa pathavigilana½ na s±diyi, kissa pana nandako yakkho pathavi½ paviµµho”ti? “Akusalassa, bhante, kammassa balavat±y±”ti. “Yadi, mah±r±ja, akusalassa kammassa balavat±ya nandako yakkho pathavi½ paviµµho, as±diyantass±pi kato apar±dho avañjho bhavati saphalo. Tena hi, mah±r±ja, akusalassapi kammassa balavat±ya as±diyantassa kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphaloti. Imin±pi, mah±r±ja, k±raºena tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphaloti.
“Kati nu kho te, mah±r±ja, manuss±, ye etarahi mah±pathavi½ paviµµh±, atthi te tattha savaºan”ti? “¾ma, bhante, suyyat²”ti. “Iªgha tva½, mah±r±ja, s±veh²”ti? “Ciñcam±ºavik±, bhante, suppabuddho ca sakko, devadatto ca thero, nandako ca yakkho, nando ca m±ºavakoti. Sutameta½, bhante, ime pañca jan± mah±pathavi½ paviµµh±”ti. “Kismi½ te, mah±r±ja, aparaddh±”ti? “Bhagavati ca, bhante, s±vakesu c±”ti. “Api nu kho, mah±r±ja bhagav± v± s±vak± v± s±diyi½su imesa½ mah±pathavipavisanan”ti? “Na hi bhante”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, tath±gatassa parinibbutassa as±diyantasseva kato adhik±ro avañjho bhavati saphalo”ti. “Suviññ±pito, bhante n±gasena, pañho gambh²ro utt±n²kato, guyha½ vida½sita½ gaºµhi bhinno, gahana½ agahana½ kata½, naµµh± parav±d±, bhagg± kudiµµh², nippabh± j±t± kutitthiy±, tva½ gaº²varapavaram±sajj±”ti.
