Ta½ divasameva br±hmaºopi bahi kammant± ±gacchanto paµipathe thera½ disv± “ki½, bho pabbajita, amh±ka½ geha½ agamitth±”ti ±ha. “¾ma, br±hmaºa, agamamh±”ti. “Api kiñci labhitth±”ti. “¾ma, br±hmaºa, labhimh±”ti. So anattamano geha½ gantv± pucchi “tassa pabbajitassa kiñci adatth±”ti. “Na kiñci adamh±”ti. Br±hmaºo dutiyadivase gharadv±re yeva nis²di “ajja pabbajita½ mus±v±dena niggahess±m²”ti. Thero dutiyadivase br±hmaºassa gharadv±ra½ sampatto.
Br±hmaºo thera½ disv±va evam±ha “tumhe hiyyo amh±ka½ gehe kiñci alabhitv±va “labhimh±”ti avocuttha, vaµµati nu kho tumh±ka½ mus±v±do”ti. Thero ±ha “maya½, br±hmaºa, tumh±ka½ gehe ( ) [(pavisant±) (ka.)] dasam±s±dhik±ni satta vass±ni ‘aticchath±’ti vacanamattampi alabhitv± hiyyo ‘aticchath±’ti vacanamatta½ labhimh±, atheta½ v±c±paµisandh±ra½ [paµisant±ra½ (s². p².)] up±d±ya evamavocumh±”ti.
Br±hmaºo cintesi “ime v±c±paµisandh±ramattampi labhitv± janamajjhe ‘labhimh±’ti pasa½santi, añña½ kiñci kh±dan²ya½ v± bhojan²ya½ v± labhitv± kasm± nappasa½sant²”ti pas²ditv± attano atth±ya paµiy±ditabhattato kaµacchubhikkha½, tadupiyañca byañjana½ d±petv± “ima½ bhikkha½ sabbak±la½ tumhe labhissath±”ti ±ha.

Atha kho n±gasenassa d±rakassa pit± n±gasena½ d±raka½ etadavoca “imasmi½ kho t±ta n±gasena, br±hmaºakule sikkh±ni sikkheyy±s²”ti. “Katam±ni, t±ta, imasmi½ br±hmaºakule sikkh±ni n±m±”ti? “Tayo kho, t±ta n±gasena, ved± sikkh±ni n±ma, avases±ni sipp±ni sippa½ n±m±”ti. “Tena hi, t±ta, sikkhiss±m²”ti.
Atha kho soºuttaro br±hmaºo ±cariyabr±hmaºassa ±cariyabh±ga½ sahassa½ datv± antop±s±de ekasmi½ gabbhe ekato mañcaka½ paññapetv± ±cariyabr±hmaºa½ etadavoca “sajjh±pehi kho, tva½ br±hmaºa, ima½ d±raka½ mant±n²ti. Tena hi ‘t±ta d±raka’ uggaºh±hi mant±n²”ti. ¾cariyabr±hmaºo sajjh±yati n±gasenassa d±rakassa ekeneva uddesena tayo ved± hadayaªgat± v±cuggat± s³padh±rit± suvavatth±pit± sumanasikat± ahesu½, sakimeva cakkhu½ udap±di t²su vedesu sanighaº¹ukeµubhesu [sanighaºµukeµubhesu (ka.)] s±kkharappabhedesu itih±sapañcamesu padako veyy±karaºo lok±yatamah±purisalakkhaºesu anavayo ahosi.
Atha kho n±gaseno d±rako pitara½ etadavoca “atthi nu kho, t±ta, imasmi½ br±hmaºakule ito uttarimpi sikkhitabb±ni, ud±hu ettak±nev±”ti. “Natthi, t±ta n±gasena, imasmi½ br±hmaºakule ito uttari½ sikkhitabb±ni, ettak±neva sikkhitabb±n²”ti.

Atha kho n±gaseno d±rako ±yasmato rohaºassa hatthato patta½ gahetv± ghara½ pavesetv± paº²tena kh±dan²yena bhojan²yena sahatth± santappetv± sampav±retv± ±yasmanta½ rohaºa½ bhutt±vi½ on²tapattap±ºi½ etadavoca “dehi me d±ni, m±risa, mantan”ti. “Yad± kho tva½, d±raka, nippalibodho hutv± m±t±pitaro anuj±n±petv± may± gahita½ pabbajitavesa½ gaºhissasi, tad± dass±m²”ti ±ha.
Atha kho n±gaseno d±rako m±t±pitaro upasaªkamitv± ±ha “ammat±t±, aya½ pabbajito ‘ya½ loke uttama½ manta½, ta½ j±n±m²’ti vadati, na ca attano santike apabbajitassa deti, aha½ etassa santike pabbajitv± ta½ uttama½ manta½ uggaºhiss±m²”ti. Athassa m±t±pitaro “pabbajitv±pi no putto manta½ gaºhatu, gahetv± puna ±gacchissat²”ti maññam±n± “gaºha putt±”ti anuj±ni½su.

Atha kho ±yasm± rohaºo n±gasena½ d±raka½ ±d±ya yena vattaniya½ sen±sana½, yena vijambhavatthu tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± vijambhavatthusmi½ sen±sane ekaratta½ vasitv± yena rakkhitatala½ tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± koµisat±na½ arahant±na½ majjhe n±gasena½ d±raka½ pabb±jesi. Pabbajito ca pan±yasm± n±gaseno ±yasmanta½ rohaºa½ etadavoca “gahito me, bhante, tava veso, detha me d±ni mantan”ti. Atha kho ±yasm± rohaºo “kimhi nu khoha½ n±gasena½ vineyya½ paµhama½ vinaye v± suttante v± abhidhamme v±”ti cintetv± “paº¹ito kho aya½ n±gaseno, sakkoti sukheneva abhidhamma½ pariy±puºitun”ti paµhama½ abhidhamme vinesi.

14. Atha kho ±yasm± n±gaseno yena koµisat± arahanto tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± koµisate arahante etadavoca “aha½ kho bhante ‘kusal± dhamm±, akusal± dhamm± aby±kat± dhamm±’ti imesu t²su padesu pakkhipitv± sabba½ ta½ abhidhammapiµaka½ vitth±rena os±ress±m²”ti. “S±dhu, n±gasena, os±reh²”ti.
Atha kho ±yasm± n±gaseno satta m±s±ni satta pakaraº±ni vitth±rena os±resi, pathav² unnadi, devat± s±dhuk±ramada½su, brahm±no apphoµesu½, dibb±ni candanacuºº±ni dibb±ni ca mand±ravapupph±ni abhippavassi½su.
15. Atha kho koµisat± arahanto ±yasmanta½ n±gasena½ paripuººav²sativassa½ rakkhitatale upasamp±desu½. Upasampanno ca pan±yasm± n±gaseno tass± rattiy± accayena pubbaºhasamaya½ niv±setv± pattac²varam±d±ya upajjh±yena saddhi½ g±ma½ piº¹±ya pavisanto evar³pa½ parivitakka½ upp±desi “tuccho vata me upajjh±yo, b±lo vata me upajjh±yo, µhapetv± avasesa½ buddhavacana½ paµhama½ ma½ abhidhamme vines²”ti.
Atha kho ±yasm± rohaºo ±yasmato n±gasenassa cetas± cetoparivitakkamaññ±ya ±yasmanta½ n±gasena½ etadavoca “ananucchavika½ kho n±gasena parivitakka½ vitakkesi, na kho paneta½ n±gasena tav±nucchavikan”ti.
Atha kho ±yasmato n±gasenassa etadahosi “acchariya½ vata bho, abbhuta½ vata bho, yatra hi n±ma me upajjh±yo cetas± cetoparivitakka½ j±nissati, paº¹ito vata me upajjh±yo, ya½n³n±ha½ upajjh±ya½ kham±peyyan”ti. Atha kho ±yasm± n±gaseno ±yasmanta½ rohaºa½ etadavoca “khamatha me, bhante, na puna evar³pa½ vitakkess±m²”ti.
Atha kho ±yasm± rohaºo ±yasmanta½ n±gasena½ etadavoca “na kho ty±ha½ n±gasena ett±vat± kham±mi, atthi kho n±gasena s±gala½ n±ma nagara½, tattha milindo n±ma r±j± rajja½ k±reti, so diµµhiv±dena pañha½ pucchitv± bhikkhusaªgha½ viheµheti, sace tva½ tattha gantv± ta½ r±j±na½ dametv± buddhas±sane pas±dessasi, ev±ha½ ta½ khamiss±m²”ti.
