Ki½ nu kho, bhante n±gasena, te arahanto bhay± pakkant±, paññ±yissati sakena kammen±ti dasabala½ p±tetuk±m± pakkant± ud±hu tath±gatassa atula½ vipulamasama½ p±µih±riya½ daµµhuk±m± pakkant±? Yadi, bhante n±gasena, bhagavat± bhaºita½ ‘vigatabhayasant±s± arahanto’ti, tena hi ‘nagare…pe… ±nandan’ti ya½ vacana½ ta½ micch±. Yadi nagare r±jagahe dhanap±laka½ hatthi½ bhagavati opatanta½ disv± pañca kh²º±savasat±ni pariccajitv± jinavara½ pakkant±ni dis±vidisa½ eka½ µhapetv± thera½ ±nanda½, tena hi ‘vigatabhayasant±s± arahanto’ti tampi vacana½ micch±. Ayampi ubhato koµiko pañho tav±nuppatto, so tay± nibb±hitabbo”ti.
“Bh±sitampeta½, mah±r±ja, bhagavat± ‘vigatabhayasant±s± arahanto’ti, nagare r±jagahe dhanap±laka½ hatthi½ bhagavati opatanta½ disv± pañca kh²º±savasat±ni pariccajitv± jinavara½ pakkant±ni dis±vidisa½ eka½ µhapetv± thera½ ±nanda½, tañca pana na bhay±, n±pi bhagavanta½ p±tetuk±mat±ya.
“Yena pana, mah±r±ja, hetun± arahanto bh±yeyyu½ v± t±seyyu½ v±, so hetu arahant±na½ samucchinno, tasm± vigatabhayasant±s± arahanto, bh±yati nu, mah±r±ja, mah±pathav² khaºantepi bhindantepi dh±rentepi samuddapabbatagirisikhareti? “Na hi, bhante”ti. “Kena k±raºena mah±r±j±”ti? “Natthi, bhante, mah±pathaviy± so hetu, yena hetun± mah±pathav² bh±yeyya v± t±seyya v±”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, natthi arahant±na½ so hetu, yena hetun± arahanto bh±yeyyu½ v± t±seyyu½ v±.
“Bh±yati nu, mah±r±ja, girisikhara½ chindante v± bhindante v± patante v± aggin± dahante v±”ti? “Na hi, bhante”ti. “Kena k±raºena mah±r±j±”ti? “Natthi, bhante, girisikharassa so hetu, yena hetun± girisikhara½ bh±yeyya v± t±seyya v±”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, natthi arahant±na½ so hetu, yena hetun± arahanto bh±yeyyu½ v± t±seyyu½ v±.
“Yadipi mah±r±ja, lokadh±tusatasahassesu ye keci sattanik±yapariy±pann± sabbepi te sattihatth± eka½ arahanta½ upadh±vitv± t±seyyu½, na bhaveyya arahato cittassa kiñci aññathatta½. Ki½ k±raºa½? Aµµh±namanavak±sat±ya.
“Api ca, mah±r±ja, tesa½ kh²º±sav±na½ eva½ cetoparivitakko ahosi ‘ajja naravarapavare jinavaravasabhe nagaravaramanuppaviµµhe v²thiy± dhanap±lako hatth² ±patissati, asa½sayamatidevadeva½ upaµµh±ko na pariccajissati, yadi maya½ sabbepi bhagavanta½ na pariccajiss±ma, ±nandassa guºo p±kaµo na bhavissati, na heva ca tath±gata½ samupagamissati hatthin±go, handa maya½ apagacch±ma, evamida½ mahato janak±yassa kilesabandhanamokkho bhavissati, ±nandassa ca guºo p±kaµo bhavissat²’ti. Eva½ te arahanto ±nisa½sa½ disv± dis±vidisa½ pakkant±”ti. “Suvibhatto, bhante n±gasena, pañho, evameta½ natthi arahant±na½ bhaya½ v± sant±so v±, ±nisa½sa½ disv± arahanto pakkant± dis±vidisan”ti.
