“Puna ca bhagavat± bhaºita½ ‘dveme, ±nanda, piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± ca. Katame dve? Yañca piº¹ap±ta½ paribhuñjitv± tath±gato anuttara½ samm±sambodhi½ abhisambujjhi, yañca piº¹ap±ta½ paribhuñjitv± tath±gato anup±dises±ya nibb±nadh±tuy± parinibb±yati. Ime dve piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k±, ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±’ti. Yadi, bhante n±gasena, bhagavato cundassa bhatta½ bhutt±vissa [bhuñjitv± (s².)] kharo ±b±dho uppanno, pab±¼h± ca vedan± pavatt± m±raºantik±, tena hi ‘dveme, ±nanda, piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±’ti ya½ vacana½, ta½ micch±. Yadi dveme piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± ca, tena hi bhagavato cundassa bhatta½ bhutt±vissa [bhuñjitv± (s².)] kharo ±b±dho uppanno, pab±¼h± ca vedan± pavatt± m±raºantik±ti tampi vacana½ micch±. Ki½nu kho, bhante n±gasena, so piº¹ap±to visagatat±ya mahapphalo, rogupp±dakat±ya mahapphalo ±yuvin±sakat±ya mahapphalo, bhagavato j²vitaharaºat±ya mahapphalo? Tattha me k±raºa½ br³hi parav±d±na½ niggah±ya, etth±ya½ jano samm³¼ho lobhavasena atibahu½ kh±yitena lohitapakkhandik± uppann±ti. Ayampi ubhato koµiko pañho tav±nuppatto, so tay± nibb±hitabbo”ti.

Yañca piº¹ap±ta½ paribhuñjitv± tath±gato anuttara½ samm±sambodhi½ abhisambujjhi, yañca piº¹ap±ta½ paribhuñjitv± tath±gato anup±dises±ya nibb±nadh±tuy± parinibb±yati [parinibb±yi (s².)], ime dve piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k±, ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±’ti.
“So pana piº¹ap±to bahuguºo anek±nisa½so. Devat±, mah±r±ja, haµµh± pasannam±nas± ‘aya½ bhagavato pacchimo piº¹ap±to’ti dibba½ oja½ s³karamaddave ±kiri½su. Tañca pana samm±p±ka½ lahup±ka½ [bahup±ka½ (s².)] manuñña½ bahurasa½ jaµµharaggitejassa hita½. Na, mah±r±ja, tatonid±na½ bhagavato koci anuppanno rogo uppanno, api ca, mah±r±ja, bhagavato pakatidubbale sar²re kh²ºe ±yusaªkh±re uppanno rogo bhiyyo abhiva¹¹hi.
“Yath±, mah±r±ja, pakatiy± jalam±no aggi aññasmi½ up±d±ne dinne bhiyyo pajjalati, evameva kho, mah±r±ja, bhagavato pakatidubbale sar²re kh²ºe ±yusaªkh±re uppanno rogo bhiyyo abhiva¹¹hi.
“Yath± v± pana, mah±r±ja, soto pakatiy± sandam±no abhivuµµhe mah±meghe bhiyyo mahogho udakav±hako hoti, evameva kho, mah±r±ja, bhagavato pakatidubbale sar²re kh²ºe ±yusaªkh±re uppanno rogo bhiyyo abhiva¹¹hi.
“Yath± v± pana, mah±r±ja, pakatiy± abhisannadh±tu kucchi aññasmi½ ajjhoharite bhiyyo ±yameyya [±mayeyya (s².)], evameva kho, mah±r±ja, bhagavato pakatidubbale sar²re kh²ºe ±yusaªkh±re uppanno rogo bhiyyo abhiva¹¹hi, natthi, mah±r±ja, tasmi½ piº¹ap±te doso, na ca tassa sakk± dosa½ ±ropetun”ti.
“Bhante n±gasena, kena k±raºena te dve piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±”ti? “Dhamm±numajjanasam±pattivasena, mah±r±ja, te dve piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±”ti.
“Bhante n±gasena, katamesa½ dhamm±na½ anumajjanasam±pattivasena te dve piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±”ti? “Navanna½, mah±r±ja, anupubbavih±rasam±patt²na½ anulomappaµilomasam±pajjanavasena te dve piº¹ap±t± samasamaphal± samavip±k± ativiya aññehi piº¹ap±tehi mahapphalatar± ca mah±nisa½satar± c±”ti.
“Bhante n±gasena, dv²su yeva divasesu adhimatta½ tath±gato nav±nupubbavih±rasam±pattiyo anulomappaµiloma½ sam±pajj²”ti? “¾ma, mah±r±j±”ti. “Acchariya½, bhante n±gasena, abbhuta½ bhante n±gasena. Ya½ imasmi½ buddhakkhette asadisa½ paramad±na½, tampi imehi dv²hi piº¹ap±tehi agaºita½. Acchariya½, bhante n±gasena, abbhuta½, bhante n±gasena. Y±va mahant± nav±nupubbavih±rasam±pattiyo, yatra hi n±ma nav±nupubbavih±rasam±pattivasena d±na½ mahapphalatara½ hoti mah±nisa½satarañca. S±dhu, bhante n±gasena, evameta½ tath± sampaµicch±m²”ti.
