“‘Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe, na pabbat±na½ vivara½ pavissa;
na vijjat² so jagatippadeso, yatthaµµhito mucceyya maccup±s±’ti.
“Puna bhagavat± paritt± ca uddiµµh±. Seyyathida½, ratanasutta½ mettasutta½ khandhaparitta½ moraparitta½ dhajaggaparitta½ ±µ±n±µiyaparitta½ aªgulim±laparitta½. Yadi, bhante n±gasena, ±k±sagatopi samuddamajjhagatopi p±s±dakuµileºaguh±pabbh±radaribilagiri vivarapabbatantaragatopi na muccati maccup±s±, tena hi parittakamma½ micch±. Yadi parittakaraºena maccup±s± parimutti bhavati, tena hi ‘na antalikkhe…pe… maccup±s±’ti tampi vacana½ micch±. Ayampi ubhato koµiko pañho gaºµhitopi gaºµhitaro tav±nuppatto, so tay± nibb±hitabbo”ti.
“Bh±sitampeta½ mah±r±ja, bhagavat± ‘na antalikkhe…pe… maccup±s±’ti, paritt± ca bhagavat± uddiµµh±, tañca pana s±vases±yukassa vayasampannassa apetakamm±varaºassa, natthi, mah±r±ja, kh²º±yukassa µhitiy± kiriy± v± upakkamo v±.
“Yath± mah±r±ja matassa rukkhassa sukkhassa ko¼±passa nisnehassa uparuddhaj²vitassa gat±yusaªkh±rassa kumbhasahassenapi udake ±kirante allatta½ v± pallavitaharitabh±vo v± na bhaveyya. Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, bhesajjaparittakammena natthi kh²º±yukassa µhitiy± kiriy± v± upakkamo v±, y±ni t±ni, mah±r±ja, mahiy± osadh±ni bhesajj±ni, t±nipi kh²º±yukassa akiccakar±ni bhavanti. S±vases±yuka½, mah±r±ja, vayasampanna½ apetakamm±varaºa½ paritta½ rakkhati gopeti, tassatth±ya bhagavat± paritt± uddiµµh±.
“Yath±, mah±r±ja, kassako paripakke dhaññe mate sassan±¼e udakappavesana½ v±reyya, ya½ pana sassa½ taruºa½ meghasannibha½ vayasampanna½, ta½ udakava¹¹hiy± va¹¹hati. Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, kh²º±yukassa bhesajjaparittakiriy± µhapit± paµikkhitt± ye pana te manuss± s±vases±yuk± vayasampann±, tesa½ atth±ya parittabhesajj±ni bhaºit±ni, te parittabhesajjehi va¹¹hant²”ti.
“Yadi, bhante n±gasena, kh²º±yuko marati, s±vases±yuko j²vati, tena hi parittabhesajj±ni niratthak±ni hont²”ti? “Diµµhapubbo pana tay±, mah±r±ja, koci rogo bhesajjehi paµinivattito”ti? “¾ma, bhante, anekasat±ni diµµh±n²”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, ‘parittabhesajjakiriy± niratthak±’ti ya½ vacana½, ta½ micch± bhavat²”ti.
“Dissanti bhante n±gasena, vejj±na½ upakkam± bhesajjap±n±nulep±, tena tesa½ upakkamena rogo paµinivattat²”ti. “Paritt±nampi, mah±r±ja, pavatt²yam±n±na½ saddo suyyati, jivh± sukkhati, hadaya½ by±vaµµati, kaºµho ±turati. Tena tesa½ pavattena sabbe by±dhayo v³pasamanti, sabb± ²tiyo apagacchant²ti.
“Diµµhapubbo pana tay±, mah±r±ja, koci ahin± daµµho mantapadena visa½ p±t²yam±no visa½ cikkhassanto uddhamadho ±camayam±no”ti? “¾ma, bhante ajjetarahipi ta½ loke vattat²”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, ‘parittabhesajjakiriy± niratthak±’ti ya½ vacana½, ta½ micch± bhavati. Kataparittañhi, mah±r±ja, purisa½ ¹a½situk±mo ahi na ¹a½sati, vivaµa½ mukha½ pidahati, cor±na½ ukkhittalagu¼ampi na sambhavati, te lagu¼a½ muñcitv± pema½ karonti, kupitopi hatthin±go sam±gantv± uparamati, pajjalitamah±-aggikkhandhopi upagantv± nibb±yati, visa½ hal±halampi kh±yita½ agada½ sampajjati, ±h±rattha½ v± pharati, vadhak± hantuk±m± upagantv± d±sabh³t± sampajjanti, akkantopi p±so na sa½varati [na sa½carati (s².)].
“Sutapubba½ pana tay±, mah±r±ja, ‘morassa kataparittassa sattavassasat±ni luddako n±sakkhi p±sa½ upanetu½, akataparittassa ta½ yeva divasa½ p±sa½ upanes²”ti “¾ma, bhante, suyyati, abbhuggato so saddo sadevake loke”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja ‘parittabhesajjakiriy± niratthak±’ti ya½ vacana½, ta½ micch± bhavati.
“Sutapubba½ pana tay±, mah±r±ja, ‘d±navo bhariya½ parirakkhanto samugge pakkhipitv± gilitv± kucchin± pariharati, atheko vijj±dharo tassa d±navassa mukhena pavisitv± t±ya saddhi½ abhiramati, yad± so d±navo aññ±si, atha samugga½ vamitv± vivari, saha samugge vivaµe vijj±dharo yath±k±ma½ [yena k±ma½ (ka.)] pakk±m²”ti? “¾ma, bhante, suyyati, abbhuggato sopi saddo sadevake loke”ti. “Nanu so, mah±r±ja, vijj±dharo parittabalena [mantabalena (?)] Gahaº± mutto”ti. “¾ma bhante”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, atthi parittabala½.
“Sutapubba½ pana tay±, mah±r±ja, ‘aparopi vijj±dharo b±r±ºasirañño antepure mahesiy± saddhi½ sampaduµµho [sa½saµµho (s².)] gahaºappatto sam±no khaºena adassana½ gato mantabalen±”ti. “¾ma, bhante, suyyat²”ti. “Nanu so, mah±r±ja, vijj±dharo parittabalena gahaº± mutto”ti? “¾ma bhante”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, atthi parittabalan”ti.
“Bhante n±gasena, ‘ki½ sabbe yeva paritta½ rakkhat²’ti? “Ekacce, mah±r±ja, rakkhati, ekacce na rakkhat²”ti. “Tena hi, bhante n±gasena, paritta½ na sabbatthikan”ti? “Api nu kho, mah±r±ja, bhojana½ sabbesa½ j²vita½ rakkhat²”ti? “Ekacce, bhante rakkhati, ekacce na rakkhat²”ti. “Ki½ k±raº±”ti. “Yato, bhante, ekacce ta½ yeva bhojana½ atibhuñjitv± vis³cik±ya marant²”ti. “Tena hi, mah±r±ja, bhojana½ na sabbesa½ j²vita½ rakkhat²”ti? “Dv²hi, bhante n±gasena, k±raºehi bhojana½ j²vita½ harati atibhuttena v± usm±dubbalat±ya v±, ±yudada½, bhante n±gasena, bhojana½ durupac±rena j²vita½ harat²”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, paritta½ ekacce rakkhati, ekacce na rakkhati.
“T²hi, mah±r±ja, k±raºehi paritta½ na rakkhati kamm±varaºena, kiles±varaºena, asaddahanat±ya. Satt±nurakkhaºa½, mah±r±ja, paritta½ attan± katena ±rakkha½ jahati, yath±, mah±r±ja, m±t± putta½ kucchigata½ poseti, hitena upac±rena janeti, janayitv± asucimalasiªgh±ºikamapanetv± uttamavarasugandha½ upalimpati, so aparena samayena paresa½ putte akkosante v± paharante v± pah±ra½ deti. Te tassa kujjhitv± paris±ya ±ka¹¹hitv± ta½ gahetv± s±mino upanenti, yadi pana tass± putto aparaddho hoti vel±tivatto. Atha na½ s±mino manuss± ±ka¹¹hayam±n± daº¹amuggaraj±ºumuµµh²hi t±¼enti pothenti, api nu kho, mah±r±ja, tassa m±t± labhati ±ka¹¹hanaparika¹¹hana½ g±ha½ s±mino upanayana½ k±tun”ti? “Na hi bhante”ti. “Kena k±raºena, mah±r±j±”ti. “Attano, bhante, apar±dhen±”ti. “Evameva kho, mah±r±ja, satt±na½ ±rakkha½ paritta½ attano apar±dhena vañjha½ karot²”ti [k±ret²ti (s².)]. “S±dhu, bhante n±gasena, suvinicchito pañho, gahana½ agahana½ kata½, andhak±ro ±loko kato, viniveµhita½ diµµhij±la½, tva½ gaºivarapavaram±sajj±”ti.
