Visuddhatt± ±varaºavirahita½ hutv± majjhima½ samathanimitta½ paµipajjati. Majjhimasamathanimitta½ n±ma samappavatto appan±sam±dhiyeva. Tadanantara½ pana purimacitta½ ekasantatipariº±manayena tathatta½ upagaccham±na½ majjhima½ samathanimitta½ paµipajjati n±ma, eva½ paµipannatt± tathattupagamanena tattha pakkhandati n±ma. Eva½ t±va purimacitte vijjam±n±k±ranipph±dik± paµhamassa jh±nassa upp±dakkhaºeyeva ±gamanavasena paµipad±visuddhi veditabb±.
Eva½ visuddhassa pana tassa puna visodhetabb±bh±vato visodhane by±p±ra½ akaronto visuddha½ citta½ ajjhupekkhati n±ma. Samathabh±v³pagamanena samathapaµipannassa puna sam±dh±ne by±p±ra½ akaronto samathapaµipanna½ ajjhupekkhati n±ma. Samathapaµipannabh±vato eva cassa kilesasa½sagga½ pah±ya ekattena upaµµhitassa puna ekattupaµµh±ne by±p±ra½ akaronto ekattupaµµh±na½ ajjhupekkhati n±ma. Eva½ tatramajjhattupekkh±ya kiccavasena upekkh±nubr³han± veditabb±.

Vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasam±ti vitakkassa ca vic±rassa c±ti imesa½ dvinna½ v³pasam± samatikkam±, dutiyajjh±nakkhaºe ap±tubh±v±ti vutta½ hoti. Tattha kiñc±pi dutiyajjh±ne sabbepi paµhamajjh±nadhamm± na santi, aññeyeva hi paµhamajjh±ne phass±dayo, aññe idha. O¼±rikassa pana o¼±rikassa aªgassa samatikkam± paµhamajjh±nato paresa½ dutiyajjh±n±d²na½ adhigamo hot²ti dassanattha½ “vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasam±”ti eva½ vuttanti veditabba½. Ajjhattanti idha niyakajjhatta½ adhippeta½, vibhaªge pana “ajjhatta½ paccattan”ti (vibha. 573) ettakameva vutta½. Yasm± niyakajjhatta½ adhippeta½, tasm± attani j±ta½, attano sant±ne nibbattanti ayamettha attho.
Sampas±dananti sampas±dana½ vuccati saddh±. Sampas±danayogato jh±nampi sampas±dana½, n²lavaººayogato n²lavattha½ viya. Yasm± v± ta½ jh±na½ sampas±danasamann±gatatt± vitakkavic±rakkhobhav³pasamanena ca ceto sampas±dayati, tasm±pi “sampas±danan”ti vutta½. Imasmiñca atthavikappe sampas±dana½ cetasoti eva½ padasambandho veditabbo. Purimasmi½ pana atthavikappe cetasoti eta½ ekodibh±vena saddhi½ yojetabba½.
Tatr±ya½ atthayojan±– eko udet²ti ekodi, vitakkavic±rehi anajjh±r³¼hatt± aggo seµµho hutv± udet²ti attho. Seµµhopi hi loke ekoti vuccati. Vitakkavic±ravirahito v± eko asah±yo hutv±tipi vattu½ vaµµati. Atha v± sampayuttadhamme ud±yat²ti udi, uµµh±pet²ti attho. Seµµhaµµhena eko ca so udi c±ti ekodi, sam±dhisseta½ adhivacana½. Iti ima½ ekodi½ bh±veti va¹¹het²ti ida½ dutiyajjh±na½ ekodibh±va½. So pan±ya½ ekodi yasm± cetaso, na sattassa, na j²vassa. Tasm± eta½ “cetaso ekodibh±van”ti vutta½.
Nanu c±ya½ saddh± paµhamajjh±nepi atthi, ayañca ekodin±mako sam±dhi, atha kasm± idameva “sampas±dana½ cetaso ekodibh±van”ti vuttanti? Vuccate– aduñhi paµhamajjh±na½ vitakkavic±rakkhobhena v²citaraªgasam±kulamiva jala½ na suppasanna½ hoti, tasm± satiy±pi saddh±ya sampas±dananti na vutta½. Na suppasannatt±yeva cettha sam±dhipi na suµµhu p±kaµo, tasm± ekodibh±vantipi na vutta½. Imasmi½ pana jh±ne vitakkavic±rapalibodh±bh±vena laddhok±s± balavat² saddh±, balavasaddh±sah±yapaµil±bheneva ca sam±dhipi p±kaµo. Tasm± idameva eva½ vuttanti veditabba½.
Avitakka½ avic±ranti bh±van±ya pah²natt± etasmi½, etassa v± vitakko natth²ti avitakka½. Imin±va nayena avic±ra½. Etth±ha “nanu ca ‘vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasam±’ti imin±pi ayamattho siddho. Atha kasm± puna vutta½ ‘avitakka½ avic±ra”n’ti? Vuccate– evameta½, siddhov±yamattho. Na paneta½ tadatthad²paka½, nanu avocumha “o¼±rikassa pana o¼±rikassa aªgassa samatikkam± paµhamajjh±nato paresa½ dutiyajjh±n±d²na½ samadhigamo hot²ti dassanattha½ ‘vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasam±’ti eva½ vuttan”ti.

Tath± vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasam± ida½ avitakka½ avic±ra½, na tatiyacatutthajjh±n±ni viya cakkhuviññ±º±d²ni viya ca abh±v±ti, eva½ avitakka-avic±rabh±vassa hetuparid²pakañca, na vitakkavic±r±bh±vamattaparid²paka½. Vitakkavic±r±bh±vamattaparid²pakameva pana “avitakka½ avic±ran”ti ida½ vacana½. Tasm± purima½ vatv±pi puna vattabbamev±ti.
Sam±dhijanti paµhamajjh±nasam±dhito sampayuttasam±dhito v± j±tanti attho. Tattha kiñc±pi paµhamampi sampayuttasam±dhito j±ta½, atha kho ayameva sam±dhi “sam±dh²”ti vattabbata½ arahati, vitakkavic±rakkhobhavirahena ativiya acalatt± suppasannatt± ca. Tasm± imassa vaººabhaºanattha½ idameva “sam±dhijan”ti vutta½. P²tisukhanti ida½ vuttanayameva.

P²tiy± ca vir±g±ti vir±go n±ma vuttappak±r±ya p²tiy± jigucchana½ v± samatikkamo v± Ubhinna½ pana antar± ca-saddo sampiº¹anattho, so v³pasama½ v± sampiº¹eti vitakkavic±rav³pasama½ v±. Tattha yad± v³pasamameva sampiº¹eti, tad± p²tiy± vir±g± ca, kiñca bhiyyo v³pasam± c±ti eva½ yojan± veditabb±. Imiss± ca yojan±ya vir±go jigucchanattho hoti, tasm± p²tiy± jigucchan± ca samatikkam± c±ti ayamattho daµµhabbo. Yad± pana vitakkavic±rav³pasama½ sampiº¹eti, tad± p²tiy± ca vir±g±, kiñca bhiyyo vitakkavic±r±nañca v³pasam±ti eva½ yojan± veditabb±. Imiss± ca yojan±ya vir±go samatikkamanattho hoti, tasm± p²tiy± ca samatikkam± vitakkavic±r±nañca v³pasam±ti ayamattho daµµhabbo.
K±mañcete vitakkavic±r± dutiyajjh±neyeva v³pasant±, imassa pana jh±nassa maggaparid²panattha½ vaººabhaºanatthañceta½ vutta½. “Vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasam±”ti hi vutte ida½ paññ±yati “n³na vitakkavic±rav³pasamo maggo imassa jh±nass±”ti. Yath± ca tatiye ariyamagge appah²n±nampi sakk±yadiµµh±d²na½ “pañcanna½ orambh±giy±na½ sa½yojan±na½ pah±n±”ti (ma. ni. 2.132-133) eva½ pah±na½ vuccam±na½ vaººabhaºana½ hoti, tadadhigam±ya ussukk±na½ uss±hajanaka½, evameva idha av³pasant±nampi vitakkavic±r±na½ v³pasamo vuccam±no vaººabhaºana½ hoti, ten±yamattho vutto “p²tiy± ca samatikkam± vitakkavic±r±nañca v³pasam±”ti.
Upekkhako ca viharat²ti ettha upapattito ikkhat²ti upekkh±, sama½ passati, apakkhapatit± hutv± passat²ti attho. T±ya visad±ya vipul±ya th±magat±ya samann±gatatt± tatiyajjh±nasamaªg² “upekkhako”ti vuccati.
Upekkh± pana dasavidh± hoti– cha¼aªgupekkh± brahmavih±rupekkh± bojjhaªgupekkh± v²riyupekkh± saªkh±rupekkh± vedanupekkh± vipassanupekkh± tatramajjhattupekkh± jh±nupekkh± p±risuddhupekkh±ti.
Tattha y± “idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhun± r³pa½ disv± neva sumano hoti na dummano, upekkhako ca viharati sato sampaj±no”ti (ma. ni. 6.1) evam±gat± kh²º±savassa chasu dv±resu iµµh±niµµhacha¼±rammaº±p±the parisuddhapakatibh±v±vijahan±k±rabh³t± upekkh±, aya½ cha¼aªgupekkh± n±ma.
