Vikiººav±canti ida½ satth± jetavane viharanto mus±v±da½ katv± devadattassa pathavippavesana½ ±rabbha kathesi. Tad± hi satth± bhikkh³hi tassa avaººe kathite “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi devadatto mus±v±da½ katv± pathavi½ paviµµhoyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente pañcasatav±ºij± n±v±ya samudda½ pakkhanditv± sattame divase at²radassaniy± n±v±ya samuddapiµµhe bhinn±ya µhapetv± eka½ avases± macchakacchapabhakkh± ahesu½, eko pana v±tavegena karampiyapaµµana½ n±ma p±puºi. So samuddato uttaritv± naggabhogo tasmi½ paµµaneyeva bhikkh±ya cari. Tamena½ manuss± “aya½ samaºo appiccho santuµµho”ti sambh±vetv± sakk±ra½ kari½su. So “laddho me j²vik³p±yo”ti tesu niv±sanap±rupana½ dentesupi na icchi. Te “natthi ito uttari appiccho samaºo”ti bhiyyo bhiyyo pas²ditv± tassa assamapada½ katv± tattha na½ niv±s±pesu½. So “karampiya-acelo”ti paññ±yi. Tassa tattha vasantassa mah±l±bhasakk±ro udap±di.
Eko n±gar±j±pissa supaººar±j± ca upaµµh±na½ ±gacchanti. Tesu n±gar±j± n±mena paº¹aro n±ma. Athekadivasa½ supaººar±j± tassa santika½ gantv± vanditv± ekamanta½ nisinno evam±ha– “bhante, amh±ka½ ñ±tak± n±ge gaºhant± bah³ vinassanti, etesa½ n±g±na½ gahaºaniy±ma½ maya½ na j±n±ma, guyhak±raºa½ kira tesa½ atthi, sakkuºeyy±tha nu kho tumhe ete piy±yam±n± viya ta½ k±raºa½ pucchitun”ti. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± supaººar±je vanditv± pakkante n±gar±jassa ±gatak±le vanditv± nisinna½ n±gar±j±na½ pucchi– “n±gar±ja, supaºº± kira tumhe gaºhant± bah³ vinassanti, tumhe gaºhant± katha½ gaºhitu½ na sakkont²”ti. Bhante, ida½ amh±ka½ guyha½ rahassa½, may± ima½ kathentena ñ±tisaªghassa maraºa½ ±haµa½ hot²ti. Ki½ pana tva½, ±vuso, “aya½ aññassa kathessat²”ti eva½saññ² hosi, n±ha½ aññassa kathess±mi, attan± pana j±nituk±mat±ya pucch±mi, tva½ mayha½ saddahitv± nibbhayo hutv± katheh²ti. N±gar±j± “na kathess±mi, bhante”ti vanditv± pakk±mi. Punadivasepi pucchi, tath±pissa na kathesi.
Atha na½ tatiyadivase ±gantv± nisinna½, “n±gar±ja, ajja tatiyo divaso, mama pucchantassa kimattha½ na kathes²”ti ±ha. “Tumhe aññassa ±cikkhissath±”ti bhayena, bhanteti. Kassaci na kathess±mi, nibbhayo katheh²ti. “Tena hi, bhante, aññassa m± kathayitth±”ti paµiñña½ gahetv±, “bhante, maya½ mahante mahante p±s±ºe gilitv± bh±riy± hutv± nipajjitv± supaºº±na½ ±gamanak±le mukha½ nibb±hetv± dante vivaritv± supaººe ¹a½situ½ acch±ma, te ±gantv± amh±ka½ s²sa½ gaºhanti, tesa½ amhe garubh±re hutv± nipanne uddharitu½ v±yamant±naññeva udaka½ ottharati. Te s²dant± anto-udakeyeva maranti, imin± k±raºena bah³ supaºº± vinassanti, tesa½ amhe gaºhant±na½ ki½ s²sena gahitena, b±l± naªguµµhe gahetv± amhe heµµh±s²sake katv± gahita½ gocara½ mukhena cha¹¹±petv± lahuke katv± gantu½ sakkont²”ti so attano rahassak±raºa½ tassa duss²lassa kathesi.
Atha tasmi½ pakkante supaººar±j± ±gantv± karampiya-acela½ vanditv± “ki½, bhante, pucchita½ te n±gar±jassa guyhak±raºan”ti ±ha. So “±m±vuso”ti vatv± sabba½ tena kathitaniy±meneva kathesi. Ta½ sutv± supaººo “n±gar±jena ayutta½ kata½, ñ±t²na½ n±ma nassananiy±mo parassa na kathetabbo, hotu, ajjeva may± supaººav±ta½ katv± paµhama½ etameva gahetu½ vaµµat²”ti supaººav±ta½ katv± paº¹aran±gar±j±na½ naªguµµhe gahetv± heµµh±s²sa½ katv± gahitagocara½ cha¹¹±petv± uppatitv± ±k±sa½ pakkhandi. Tattha vikiººav±canti patthaµavacana½. Aniguyhamantanti appaµicchannamanta½. Asaññatanti k±yadv±r±d²ni rakkhitu½ asakkonta½. Aparicakkhit±ranti “aya½ may± kathitamanta½ rakkhitu½ sakkhissati, na sakkhissat²”ti puggala½ oloketu½ upaparikkhitu½ asakkonta½. Bhaya½ tamanvet²ti ta½ imehi cat³hi aªgehi samann±gata½ abodha½ duppañña½ puggala½ saya½katameva bhaya½ anveti, yath± ma½ paº¹arakan±ga½ supaººo anv±gatoti. Sa½sati h±sam±noti rakkhitu½ asamatthassa p±papurisassa h±sam±no katheti. N±numittoti anuvattanamattena yo mitto, na hadayena, so guyha½ attha½ j±nitu½ n±rahat²ti paridevati. Asambuddhanti asambuddhanto aj±nanto, appaññoti attho. Sambuddhanti sambuddhanto j±nanto, sappaññoti attho. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– “yopi suhadayo mitto v± amitto v± appañño sappaññopi v± yo anatthav± anatthacaro, sopi guyha½ veditu½ n±rahate”ti.
Samaºo ayanti aya½ samaºoti ca lokasammatoti ca bh±vitattoti ca maññam±no aha½ etasmi½ viss±sam±pajji½. Akkhinti kathesi½. At²tamatthoti at²tattho, atikkantattho hutv± id±ni kapaºa½ rud±m²ti paridevati. Tass±ti tassa acelakassa. Brahmeti supaººa½ ±lapati. Sa½yametunti ima½ guyhav±ca½ rahassak±raºa½ rakkhitu½ n±sakkhi½. Tappakkhato h²ti id±ni ida½ bhaya½ mama tassa acelakassa pakkhato koµµh±sato santik± ±gata½, iti at²tattho kapaºa½ rud±m²ti. Suhadanti “suhado mama ayan”ti maññam±no. Dukkul²neti akulaje n²ce. Dos±ti etehi dos±d²hi k±raºehi yo evar³pa½ guyha½ sa½sati, so b±lo asa½saya½ pallatthito parivattetv± p±pito, hatoyeva n±m±ti attho.
Tirokkhav±coti attano ya½ v±ca½ kathetuk±mo, tass± tirokkhakatatt± paµicchannav±co. Asata½ paviµµhoti asappuris±na½ antara½ paviµµho asappurisesu pariy±panno. Saªgat²su mud²ret²ti yo evar³po paresa½ rahassa½ sutv±va parisamajjhesu “asukena asuka½ n±ma kata½ v± vutta½ v±”ti v±kya½ ud²reti, ta½ nara½ “±s²viso dummukho p³timukho”ti ±hu, t±disamh± puris± ±r± ±r± sa½yame, d³rato d³ratova virameyya, parivajjeyya nanti attho. M±lamucch±danañc±ti m±lañca dibba½ catujj±tiyagandhañca ucch±danañca. Oh±y±ti ete dibba-ann±dayo sabbak±me ajja maya½ oh±ya cha¹¹etv± gamiss±ma. Supaººa, p±º³pagat±va tyamh±ti, bho supaººa, p±ºehi upagat±va te amh±, saraºa½ no hoh²ti.
Eva½ paº¹arako ±k±se heµµh±s²sako olambanto aµµhahi g±th±hi paridevi. Supaººo tassa paridevanasadda½ sutv±, “n±gar±ja attano rahassa½ acelakassa kathetv± id±ni kimattha½ paridevas²”ti ta½ garahitv± g±tham±ha–
266. “Ko n²dha tiººa½ garaha½ upeti, asmi½dha loke p±ºabh³ n±gar±ja;
samaºo supaººo athav± tvameva, ki½k±raº± paº¹arakaggah²to”ti.
Tattha ko n²dh±ti idha amhesu t²su janesu ko nu. Asmi½dh±ti ettha idh±ti nip±tamatta½, asmi½ loketi attho. P±ºabh³ti p±ºabh³to. Athav± tvamev±ti ud±hu tva½yeva. Tattha samaºa½ t±va m± garaha, so hi up±yena ta½ rahassa½ pucchi. Supaººampi m± garaha, ahañhi tava paccatthikova. Paº¹arakaggah²toti, samma paº¹araka, “aha½ ki½k±raº± supaººena gahito”ti cintetv± ca pana att±nameva garaha, tay± hi rahassa½ kathentena attan±va attano anattho katoti ayamettha adhipp±yo.

Ida½ vutta½ hoti– n±gar±ja loke amaropi natthi, paññ±vidh±pi atthi, s± aññesa½ paññ±koµµh±sasaªkh±t± paññ±vidh± attano j²vitahetu na ninditabb±ti. Atha v± paññ±vidh±ti paññ±sadis± na ninditabb± n±ma aññ± dhammaj±ti natthi, ta½ kasm± nindas²ti. Yesa½ pana “paññ±vidh±nampi na ninditabban”tipi p±µho, tesa½ ujukameva. Saccen±ti-±d²su vac²saccena ca sucaritadhammena ca paññ±saªkh±t±ya dhitiy± ca indriyadamena ca alabbha½ dullabha½ aµµhasam±pattimaggaphalanibb±nasaªkh±tampi visesa½ aby±harati ±vahati ta½ nipph±deti naro idha, tasm± n±rahasi acela½ ninditu½, att±nameva garaha. Acelena hi attano paññavantat±ya up±yakusalat±ya ca vañcetv± tva½ rahassa½ guyha½ manta½ pucchitoti attho.
