Ki½ te vatanti ida½ satth± paµhamagamanena kapilapura½ gantv± nigrodh±r±me viharanto pitu nivesane rañño asaddahana½ ±rabbha kathesi. Tad± hi suddhodanamah±r±j± v²satisahassabhikkhupariv±rassa bhagavato attano nivesane y±gukhajjaka½ datv± antar±bhatte sammodan²ya½ katha½ kathento “bhante, tumh±ka½ padh±nak±le devat± ±gantv± ±k±se µhatv± ‘putto te siddhatthakum±ro app±h±rat±ya mato’ti mayha½ ±rocesun”ti ±ha. Satth±r± ca “saddahi, mah±r±j±”ti vutte “na saddahi½, bhante, ±k±se µhatv± kathentiyopi devat±, ‘mama puttassa bodhitale buddhatta½ appatv± parinibb±na½ n±ma natth²’ti paµikkhipin”ti ±ha. “Mah±r±ja, pubbepi tva½ mah±dhammap±lak±lepi ‘putto te mato im±nissa aµµh²n²’ti dassetv± vadantassapi dis±p±mokkh±cariyassa ‘amh±ka½ kule taruºak±le k±lakiriy± n±ma natth²’ti na saddahi, id±ni pana kasm± saddahissas²”ti vatv± tena y±cito at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente k±siraµµhe dhammap±lag±mo n±ma ahosi. So dhammap±lakulassa vasanat±ya eta½ n±ma½ labhi. Tattha dasanna½ kusalakammapath±na½ p±lanato “dhammap±lo”tveva paññ±to br±hmaºo paµivasati, tassa kule antamaso d±sakammakar±pi d±na½ denti, s²la½ rakkhanti, uposathakamma½ karonti. Tad± bodhisatto tasmi½ kule nibbatti, “dhammap±lakum±ro”tvevassa n±ma½ kari½su. Atha na½ vayappatta½ pit± sahassa½ datv± sippuggahaºatth±ya takkasila½ pesesi. So tattha gantv± dis±p±mokkh±cariyassa santike sippa½ uggaºhi, pañcanna½ m±ºavakasat±na½ jeµµhantev±siko ahosi. Tad± ±cariyassa jeµµhaputto k±lamak±si. ¾cariyo m±ºavakaparivuto ñ±tigaºena saddhi½ rodanto kandanto sus±ne tassa sar²rakicca½ k±reti. Tattha ±cariyo ca ñ±tivaggo cassa antev±sik± ca rodanti paridevanti, dhammap±loyeveko na rodati na paridevati. Apica kho pana tesu pañcasatesu m±ºavesu sus±n± ±gamma ±cariyassa santike nis²ditv± “aho evar³po n±ma ±c±rasampanno taruºam±ºavo taruºak±leyeva m±t±pit³hi vippayutto maraºappatto”ti vadantesu “samm±, tumhe ‘taruºo’ti bhaºatha, atha kasm± taruºak±leyeva marati, nanu ayutta½ taruºak±le maritun”ti ±ha.
Atha na½ te ±ha½su “ki½ pana samma, tva½ imesa½ satt±na½ maraºabh±va½ na j±n±s²”ti? J±n±mi, taruºak±le pana na maranti, mahallakak±leyeva marant²ti. Nanu anicc± sabbe saªkh±r± hutv± abh±vinoti? “Sacca½ anicc±, daharak±le pana satt± na maranti, mahallakak±le maranti, aniccata½ p±puºant²”ti. “Ki½ samma, dhammap±la, tumh±ka½ gehe na keci marant²”ti? “Daharak±le pana na maranti, mahallakak±leyeva marant²”ti. “Ki½ panes± tumh±ka½ kulapaveº²”ti? “¾ma kulapaveº²”ti. M±ºav± ta½ tassa katha½ ±cariyassa ±rocesu½. Atha na½ so pakkos±petv± pucchi “sacca½ kira t±ta dhammap±la, tumh±ka½ kule daharak±le na m²yant²”ti? “Sacca½ ±cariy±”ti. So tassa vacana½ sutv± cintesi “aya½ ativiya acchariya½ vadati, imassa pitu santika½ gantv± pucchitv± sace eta½ sacca½, ahampi tameva dhamma½ p³ress±m²”ti. So puttassa kattabbakicca½ katv± sattaµµhadivasaccayena dhammap±la½ pakkos±petv± “t±ta, aha½ khippa½ ±gamiss±mi, y±va mam±gaman± ime m±ºave sippa½ v±ceh²”ti vatv± ekassa e¼akassa aµµh²ni gahetv± dhovitv± pasibbake katv± eka½ c³¼upaµµh±ka½ ±d±ya takkasilato nikkhamitv± anupubbena ta½ g±ma½ patv± “katara½ mah±dhammap±lassa gehan”ti pucchitv± gantv± dv±re aµµh±si. Br±hmaºassa d±samanussesu yo yo paµhama½ addasa, so so ±cariyassa hatthato chatta½ gaºhi, up±hana½ gaºhi, upaµµh±kassapi hatthato pasibbaka½ gaºhi. “Puttassa vo dhammap±lakum±rassa ±cariyo dv±re µhitoti kum±rassa pitu ±roceth±”ti ca vutt± “s±dh³”ti gantv± ±rocayi½su. ¾cariyo bhuttabhojano sukhakath±ya nisinnak±le “br±hmaºa, putto te dhammap±lakum±ro paññav± tiººa½ ved±na½ aµµh±rasannañca sipp±na½ nipphatti½ patto, apica kho panekena aph±sukena j²vitakkhaya½ patto, sabbe saªkh±r± anicc±, m± socitth±”ti ±ha. Br±hmaºo p±ºi½ paharitv± mah±hasita½ hasi. “Ki½ nu br±hmaºa, hasas²”ti ca vutte “mayha½ putto na marati, añño koci mato bhavissat²”ti ±ha. “Br±hmaºa, puttoyeva te mato, puttasseva te aµµh²ni disv± saddah±”ti aµµh²ni n²haritv± “im±ni te puttassa aµµh²n²”ti ±ha. Et±ni e¼akassa v± sunakhassa v± bhavissanti, mayha½ pana putto na marati, amh±k±ñhi kule y±va sattam± kulaparivaµµ± taruºak±le matapubb± n±ma natthi, tva½ mus± bhaºas²ti. Eva½ br±hmaºa, maya½ dhamma½ rakkh±ma, dhammopi amhe rakkhat²ti dasseti. Dhammena guttoti mah±chattasadisena attan± gopitadhammena gutto. Aññassa aµµh²n²ti tay± ±n²t±ni aµµh²ni aññassa e¼akassa v± sunakhassa v± aµµh²ni bhavissanti, cha¹¹ethet±ni, mama putto sukh² kum±roti.
Ta½ sutv± ±cariyo “mayha½ ±gamana½ su-±gamana½, saphala½, no nipphalan”ti sañj±tasomanasso dhammap±lassa pitara½ kham±petv± “may± ±gacchantena tumh±ka½ v²ma½sanatth±ya im±ni e¼aka-aµµh²ni ±bhat±ni, putto te arogoyeva, tumh±ka½ rakkhitadhamma½ mayhampi deth±”ti paººe likhitv± katip±ha½ tattha vasitv± takkasila½ gantv± dhammap±la½ sabbasipp±ni sikkh±petv± mahantena pariv±rena pesesi.
Satth± suddhodanamah±r±jassa ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± sacc±ni pak±setv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi, saccapariyos±ne r±j± an±g±miphale patiµµhahi. Tad± m±t±pitaro mah±r±jakul±ni ahesu½, ±cariyo s±riputto, paris± buddhaparis±, dhammap±lakum±ro pana ahameva ahosinti.
