Ekadivasañhi bhikkh³ tena “±vuso devadatta, satth± tava bah³pak±ro, tvañhi satth±ra½ niss±ya pabbajja½ labhi upasampada½ labhi, tepiµaka½ buddhavacana½ uggaºhi, jh±na½ upp±desi, l±bhasakk±ropi te dasabalasseva santako”ti bhikkh³hi vutte tiºasal±ka½ ukkhipitv± “ettakampi samaºena gotamena mayha½ kata½ guºa½ na pass±m²”ti vutte dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi devadatto akataññ³ mittadubbh²”ti vatv± tehi y±cito at²ta½ ±hari.

Ta½ divasaññeva seµµhi½ niss±ya vasantassa tunnak±rassa bhariy±pi pilotikantare putta½ vij±yi, tassa “pottiko”ti n±ma½ kari½su.
Mah±seµµhi ubhopi te d±rake “nigrodhakum±rassa j±tadivasaññeva j±t±”ti ±º±petv± teneva saddhi½ sa½va¹¹hesi. Te ekato va¹¹hitv± vayappatt± takkasila½ gantv± sippa½ uggaºhi½su. Ubhopi seµµhiputt± ±cariyassa dve sahass±ni ada½su. Nigrodhakum±ro pottikassa attano santike sippa½ paµµhapesi. Te nipphannasipp± ±cariya½ ±pucchitv± nikkhant± “janapadac±rika½ cariss±m±”ti anupubbena b±r±ºasi½ patv± ekasmi½ rukkham³le nipajji½su. Tad± b±r±ºasirañño k±lakatassa sattamo divaso, “sve phussaratha½ yojess±m±”ti nagare bheri½ car±pesu½. Tesupi sah±yesu rukkham³le nipajjitv± nidd±yantesu pottiko pacc³sak±le uµµh±ya nigrodhakum±rassa p±de parimajjanto nis²di. Tasmi½ rukkhe vutthakukkuµesu uparikukkuµo heµµh±kukkuµassa sar²re vacca½ p±tesi. Atha na½ so “keneta½ p±titan”ti ±ha. “Samma, m± kujjhi, may± aj±nantena p±titan”ti ±ha. “Are, tva½ mama sar²ra½ attano vaccaµµh±na½ maññasi, ki½ mama pam±ºa½ na j±n±s²”ti. Atha na½ itaro “are tva½ ‘aj±nantena me katan’ti vuttepi kujjhasiyeva, ki½ pana te pam±ºan”ti ±ha. “Yo ma½ m±retv± ma½sa½ kh±dati, so p±tova sahassa½ labhati, tasm± aha½ m±na½ karom²”ti. Atha na½ itaro “are ettakamattena tva½ m±na½ karosi, ma½ pana m±retv± yo th³lama½sa½ kh±dati, so p±tova r±j± hoti, yo majjhimama½sa½ kh±dati, so sen±pati, yo aµµhinissita½ kh±dati, so bhaº¹±g±riko hot²”ti ±ha.
Pottiko tesa½ katha½ sutv± “ki½ no sahassena, rajjameva varan”ti saºika½ rukkha½ abhiruhitv± uparisayitakukkuµa½ gahetv± m±retv± aªg±re pacitv± th³lama½sa½ nigrodhassa ad±si, majjhimama½sa½ s±khassa ad±si, aµµhima½sa½ attan± kh±di. Kh±ditv± pana “samma nigrodha, tva½ ajja r±j± bhavissasi, samma s±kha, tva½ sen±pati bhavissasi, aha½ pana bhaº¹±g±riko bhaviss±m²”ti vatv± “katha½ j±n±s²”ti puµµho ta½ pavatti½ ±rocesi. Te tayopi jan± p±tar±savel±ya b±r±ºasi½ pavisitv± ekassa br±hmaºassa gehe sappisakkarayutta½ p±y±sa½ bhuñjitv± nagar± nikkhamitv± uyy±na½ pavisi½su. Nigrodhakum±ro sil±paµµe nipajji itare dve bahi nipajji½su. Tasmi½ samaye pañca r±jakakudhabhaº¹±ni anto µhapetv± phussaratha½ vissajjesu½. Tattha vitth±rakath± mah±janakaj±take (j±. 2.22.123 ±dayo) ±vi bhavissati. Phussaratho uyy±na½ gantv± nivattitv± ±rohanasajjo hutv± aµµh±si. Purohito “uyy±ne puññavat± sattena bhavitabban”ti uyy±na½ pavisitv± kum±ra½ disv± p±dantato s±µaka½ apanetv± p±desu lakkhaº±ni upadh±retv± “tiµµhatu b±r±ºasiya½ rajja½, sakalajambud²passa adhipatir±j± bhavitu½ yutto”ti sabbat±l±vacare paggaºh±pesi. Nigrodhakum±ro pabujjhitv± mukhato s±µaka½ apanetv± mah±jana½ oloketv± parivattitv± nipanno thoka½ v²tin±metv± sil±paµµe pallaªkena nis²di. Atha na½ purohito jaººun± patiµµh±ya “rajja½ te deva p±puº±t²”ti vatv± “‘s±dh³”ti vutte tattheva ratanar±simhi µhapetv± abhisiñci. So rajja½ patv± s±khassa sen±patiµµh±na½ datv± mahantena sakk±rena nagara½ p±visi, pottikopi tehi saddhiññeva agam±si. Tato paµµh±ya mah±satto b±r±ºasiya½ dhammena rajja½ k±resi.
So ekadivasa½ m±t±pit³na½ saritv± s±kha½ ±ha– “samma, na sakk± m±t±pit³hi vin± vattitu½, mahantena pariv±rena gantv± m±t±pitaro no ±neh²”ti. S±kho “na me tattha gamanakamma½ atth²”ti paµikkhipi. Tato pottika½ ±º±pesi. So “s±dh³”ti tattha gantv± nigrodhassa m±t±pitaro “putto vo rajje patiµµhito, etha gacch±m±”ti ±ha. Te “atthi no t±va vibhavamatta½, ala½ tattha gamanen±”ti paµikkhipi½su. S±khassapi m±t±pitaro avoca, tepi na icchi½su. Attano m±t±pitaro avoca, “maya½ t±ta tunnak±rakammena j²viss±ma alan”ti paµikkhipi½su. So tesa½ mana½ alabhitv± b±r±ºasimeva pacc±gantv± “sen±patissa ghare maggakilamatha½ vinodetv± pacch± nigrodhasah±ya½ passiss±m²”ti cintetv± tassa nivesanadv±ra½ gantv± “sah±yo kira te pottiko n±ma ±gatoti sen±patissa ±roceh²”ti dov±rika½ ±ha, so tath± ak±si. S±kho pana “aya½ mayha½ rajja½ adatv± sah±yanigrodhassa ad±s²”ti tasmi½ vera½ bandhi. So ta½ katha½ sutv±va kuddho ±gantv± “ko imassa sah±yo ummattako d±siputto, gaºhatha nan”ti vatv± hatthap±dajaººukapparehi koµµ±petv± g²v±ya½ g±h±petv± n²har±pesi.
So cintesi “s±kho mama santik± sen±patiµµh±na½ labhitv± akataññ³ mittadubbh², ma½ koµµ±petv± n²har±pesi, nigrodho pana paº¹ito kataññ³ sappuriso, tasseva santika½ gamiss±m²”ti. So r±jadv±ra½ gantv± “deva, pottiko kira n±ma te sah±yo dv±re µhito”ti rañño ±roc±pesi. R±j± pakkos±petv± ta½ ±gacchanta½ disv± ±san± vuµµh±ya paccuggantv± paµisanth±ra½ katv± massukamm±d²ni k±r±petv± sabb±laªk±rapaµimaº¹itena paribhuttan±naggarasabhojanena tena saddhi½ sukhanisinno m±t±pit³na½ pavatti½ pucchitv± an±gamanabh±va½ suºi. S±khopi “pottiko ma½ rañño santike paribhindeyya mayi pana gate kiñci vattu½ na sakkhissat²”ti tattheva agam±si. Pottiko tassa santikeyeva r±j±na½ ±mantetv± “deva, aha½ maggakilanto ‘s±khassa geha½ gantv± vissamitv± idh±gamiss±m²’ti agami½. Atha ma½ s±kho ‘n±ha½ ta½ j±n±m²’ti vatv± koµµ±petv± g²v±ya½ g±h±petv± n²har±pes²ti saddaheyy±si tva½ etan”ti vatv± tisso g±th± abh±si–

kata½ anariya½ s±khena, sakhin± te jan±dhip±”ti.
Tattha kinti maññas²ti yath± ma½ s±kho acari, ki½ tvampi evameva maññasi, ud±hu aññath± maññasi, ma½ s±kho eva½ vadeyy±ti saddahasi, ta½ na saddahas²ti adhipp±yo. Galavin²ten±ti galagg±hena. Dubbhin±ti mittadubbhin±.

75. “Na v±hameta½ j±n±mi, napi me koci sa½sati;
ya½ me tva½ samma akkh±si, s±khena k±raºa½ kata½.

tva½ nosissariya½ d±t±, manussesu mahantata½;
tay±m± labbhit± iddh², ettha me natthi sa½sayo.
77. “Yath±pi b²jamaggimhi, ¹ayhati na vir³hati;
eva½ kata½ asappurise, nassati na vir³hati.
78. “Kataññumhi ca posamhi, s²lavante ariyavuttine;
sukhette viya b²j±ni, kata½ tamhi na nassat²”ti.
Tattha sa½sat²ti ±cikkhati. K±raºa½ katanti ±ka¹¹hanavika¹¹hanapothanakoµµanasaªkh±ta½ k±raºa½ katanti attho. Sakh²na½ s±j²vakaroti samma, pottika tva½ sah±yak±na½ su-±j²vakaro j²vik±ya upp±det±. Mama s±khassa c³bhayanti mayhañca s±khassa ca ubhinnampi sakh²nanti attho. Tva½ nosissariyanti tva½ no asi issariya½ d±t±, tava santik± im± sampatt² amhehi laddh±. Mahantatanti mahantabh±va½.
Evañca pana vatv± ettaka½ kathente nigrodhe s±kho tattheva aµµh±si. Atha na½ r±j± “s±kha ima½ pottika½ sañj±n±s²”ti pucchi. So tuºh² ahosi. Athassa r±j± daº¹a½ ±º±pento aµµhama½ g±tham±ha–
79. “Ima½ jamma½ nekatika½, asappurisacintaka½;
hanantu s±kha½ satt²hi, n±ssa icch±mi j²vitan”ti.
Tattha jammanti l±maka½. Nekatikanti vañcaka½.
Ta½ sutv± pottiko “m± esa b±lo ma½ niss±ya nassat³”ti cintetv± navama½ g±tham±ha–
80. “Khamatassa mah±r±ja, p±º± na paµi-±nay±;
khama deva asappurisassa, n±ssa icch±maha½ vadhan”ti.
Tattha khamatass±ti khamata½ assa, etassa asappurisassa khamath±ti attho. Na paµi-±nay±ti matassa n±ma p±º± paµi-±netu½ na sakk±.
R±j± tassa vacana½ sutv± s±khassa khami, sen±patiµµh±nampi pottikasseva d±tuk±mo ahosi so pana na icchi. Athassa sabbasen±n²na½ vic±raº±raha½ bhaº¹±g±rikaµµh±na½ n±ma ad±si. Pubbe kireta½ µh±nantara½ n±hosi, tato paµµh±ya j±ta½. Aparabh±ge pottiko bhaº¹±g±riko puttadh²t±hi va¹¹ham±no attano puttadh²t±na½ ov±davasena os±nag±tham±ha–
81. “Nigrodhameva seveyya, na s±khamupasa½vase;
nigrodhasmi½ mata½ seyyo, yañce s±khasmi j²vitan”ti.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± “eva½, bhikkhave, devadatto pubbepi akataññ³yev±”ti vatv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± s±kho devadatto ahosi, pottiko ±nando, nigrodho pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
