S±vatthiya½ kireko up±sako tath±gatassa dhammadesana½ sutv± pasannacitto sv±tan±ya nimantetv± attano gharadv±re maº¹apa½ k±retv± alaªkaritv± punadivase tath±gatassa k±la½ ±roc±pesi. Satth± pañcasatabhikkhupariv±ro tattha gantv± paññatte ±sane nis²di. Up±sako saputtad±ro saparijano buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa mah±d±na½ datv± puna sv±tan±y±ti eva½ satt±ha½ nimantetv± mah±d±na½ pavattetv± sattame divase sabbaparikkh±ra½ ad±si. Ta½ pana dadam±no up±hanad±na½ ussanna½ katv± ad±si. Dasabalassa dinno up±hanasaªgh±µo sahassagghanako ahosi, dvinna½ aggas±vak±na½ pañcasatagghanako, ses±na½ pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ satagghanako. Iti so sabbaparikkh±rad±na½ datv± attano paris±ya saddhi½ bhagavato santike nis²di. Athassa satth± madhurena sarena anumodana½ karonto “up±saka, u¼±ra½ te sabbaparikkh±rad±na½, attamano hohi, pubbe anuppanne buddhe paccekabuddhassa eka½ up±hanasaªgh±µa½ datv± n±v±ya bhinn±ya appatiµµhe mah±samuddepi up±hanad±nanissandena patiµµha½ labhi½su, tva½ pana buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa sabbaparikkh±rad±na½ ad±si, tassa te up±hanad±nassa phala½ kasm± na patiµµh± bhavissat²”ti vatv± tena y±cito at²ta½ ±hari.

Tad± pana cat³hi lokap±lehi maºimekhal± n±ma devadh²t± “sace samudde n±v±ya bhinn±ya tisaraºagat± v± s²lasampann± v± m±t±pitupaµµh±k± v± manuss± dukkhappatt± honti, te rakkheyy±s²”ti samudde ±rakkhaºatth±ya µhapit± hoti. S± attano issariyena satt±hamanubhavitv± pamajjitv± sattame divase samudda½ olokent² s²l±c±rasa½yutta½ saªkhabr±hmaºa½ disv± “imassa sattamo divaso samudde patitassa, sace so marissati ativiya g±rayh± me bhavissat²”ti sa½viggam±nahaday± hutv± eka½ suvaººap±ti½ n±naggarasabhojanassa p³retv± v±tavegena tattha gantv± tassa purato ±k±se µhatv± “br±hmaºa, tva½ satt±ha½ nir±h±ro, ida½ dibbabhojana½ bhuñj±”ti ±ha. athakkhaºe dassayase vil±pa½, añño nu ko te paµimantako may±”ti.
Tattha sutadhammos²ti dhammopi tay± dhammikasamaºabr±hmaº±na½ santike suto asi. Diµµh± tay±ti tesa½ paccaye dentena veyy±vacca½ karontena dhammikasamaºabr±hmaº± ca tay± diµµh±. Eva½ akaronto hi passantopi te na passatiyeva. Athakkhaºeti atha akkhaºe sallapantassa kassaci abh±vena vacanassa anok±se. Dassayaseti “aha½ uposathiko”ti vadanto vil±pa½ dassesi. Paµimantakoti may± añño ko tava paµimantako paµivacanad±yako, ki½k±raº± eva½ vippalapas²ti?

‘bhuñjassu bhatta½’ iti ma½ vadeti, saddh±vitt±, tamaha½ noti br³m²”ti.
Tattha subbh³ti subhamukh±. Subh±ti p±s±dik± uttamar³padhar±. Suppaµimukkakamb³ti paµimukkasuvaºº±laªk±r±. Paggayh±ti suvaººap±tiy± bhatta½ gahetv± ukkhipitv±. Saddh±vitt±ti saddh± ceva tuµµhacitt± ca. “Saddha½ cittan”tipi p±µho, tassattho saddhanti saddahanta½, cittanti tuµµhacitta½. Tamaha½ not²ti tamaha½ devata½ uposathikatt± paµikkhipanto noti br³mi, na vippalap±mi samm±ti.

Tattha sukham±sis±noti et±disa½ yakkha½ disv± attano sukha½ ±s²santo paº¹ito puriso “amh±ka½ sukha½ bhavissati, na bhavissat²”ti puccheyya. Uµµheh²ti udakato uµµh±n±k±ra½ dassento uµµhaha. Pañjalik±bhipucch±ti añjaliko hutv± abhipuccha. Uda m±nus²ti ud±hu mahiddhik± m±nus² tvanti.

42. “Ya½ tva½ sukhen±bhisamekkhase ma½, bhuñjassu bhatta½ iti ma½ vadesi;
pucch±mi ta½ n±ri mah±nubh±ve, dev² nusi tva½ uda m±nus² n³”ti.
Tattha ya½ tvanti yasm± tva½ sukhena ma½ abhisamekkhase, piyacakkh³hi olokesi. Pucch±mi tanti tena k±raºena ta½ pucch±mi.

43. “Dev² aha½ saªkha mah±nubh±v±, idh±gat± s±garav±rimajjhe;
anukampik± no ca paduµµhacitt±, taveva atth±ya idh±gat±smi.

sabbassa ty±ha½ paµip±day±mi, ya½ kiñci tuyha½ manas±bhipatthitan”ti.
Tattha idh±ti imasmi½ mah±samudde. N±n±vividh±n²ti bah³ni ca anekappak±r±ni ca hatthiy±na-assay±n±d²ni atthi. Sabbassa ty±hanti tassa annap±n±dino sabbassa s±mika½ katv± ta½ te annap±n±di½ paµip±day±mi dad±mi. Ya½ kiñc²ti aññampi ya½ kiñci manas± icchita½, ta½ sabba½ te damm²ti.
Ta½ sutv± mah±satto “aya½ devadh²t± samuddapiµµhe mayha½ ‘idañcidañca damm²’ti vadati, ki½ nu kho es± may± katena puññakammena d±tuk±m±, ud±hu attano balena, pucchiss±mi t±va nan”ti cintetv± pucchanto sattama½ g±tham±ha–
45. “Ya½ kiñci yiµµhañca hutañca mayha½, sabbassa no issar± tva½ sugatte;
sussoºi subbhamu suvilaggamajjhe, kissa me kammassa aya½ vip±ko”ti.
Tattha yiµµhanti d±navasena yajita½. Hutanti ±hunap±hunavasena dinna½. Sabbassa no issar± tvanti tassa amh±ka½ puññakammassa tva½ issar±, “imassa aya½ vip±ko, imassa ayan”ti by±karitu½ samatth±ti attho. Sussoº²ti sundara-³rulakkhaºe. Subbham³ti sundarabhamuke Suvilaggamajjheti suµµhuvilaggitatanumajjhe. Kissa meti may± katakammesu katarakammassa aya½ vip±ko, yen±ha½ appatiµµhe samudde patiµµha½ labh±m²ti.

Tattha ekabhikkhunti eka½ paccekabuddha½ sandh±y±ha. Ugghaµµap±danti uºhav±luk±ya ghaµµitap±da½. Tasitanti pip±sita½. Paµip±day²ti paµip±desi, yojes²ti attho. K±maduh±ti sabbak±mad±yik±.
Ta½ sutv± mah±satto “evar³pepi n±ma appatiµµhe mah±samudde may± dinna-up±hanad±na½ mama sabbak±madada½ j±ta½, aho sudinna½ me paccekabuddhassa d±nan”ti tuµµhacitto navama½ g±tham±ha–

aññassa y±nassa na hettha bh³mi, ajjeva ma½ mo¼ini½ p±payass³”ti.

Tattha ti bhikkhave, s± devat± tattha samuddamajjhe tassa vacana½ sutv± vittisaªkh±t±ya p²tiy± samann±gatatt± vitt±. Suman±ti sundaraman± p±mojjena pat²tacitt± hutv± vicitran±va½ nimminitv± br±hmaºa½ paric±rakena saddhi½ ±d±ya s±dhuramma½ atiramaº²ya½ nagara½ up±nay²ti.
Br±hmaºopi y±vaj²va½ aparimitadhana½ geha½ ajjh±vasanto d±na½ datv± s²la½ rakkhitv± j²vitapariyos±ne sapariso devanagara½ parip³resi.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± sacc±ni pak±setv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi, saccapariyos±ne up±sako sot±pattiphale patiµµhahi.
