At²te b±r±ºasiya½ janako n±ma r±j± rajja½ k±resi. Tad± bodhisatto br±hmaºakule nibbatti senakakum±rotissa n±ma½ kari½su. So vayappatto takkasil±ya½ sabbasipp±ni uggaºhitv± b±r±ºasi½ pacc±gantv± r±j±na½ passi, r±j± ta½ amaccaµµh±ne µhapesi, mahantañcassa yasa½ anuppad±si So rañño atthañca dhammañca anus±si, madhurakatho dhammakathiko hutv± r±j±na½ pañcasu s²lesu patiµµh±petv± d±ne uposathakamme dasasu kusalakammapathes³ti im±ya kaly±ºapaµipad±ya patiµµh±pesi sakalaraµµhe buddh±na½ uppannak±lo viya ahosi. Pakkhadivasesu r±j± ca upar±j±dayo ca sabbe sannipatitv± dhammasabha½ sajjenti. Mah±satto sajjitadhammasabh±ya½ ratanapallaªkavaragato buddhal²¼±ya dhamma½ deseti, buddh±na½ dhammakath±sadis±vassa kath± hoti.
Atha aññataro mahallakabr±hmaºo dhanabhikkha½ caritv± kah±paºasahassa½ labhitv± ekasmi½ br±hmaºakule nikkhipitv± puna “bhikkha½ cariss±m²”ti gato. Tassa gatak±le ta½ kula½ kah±paºe va¼añjesi. So ±gantv± kah±paºe ±har±pesi. Br±hmaºo kah±paºe d±tu½ asakkonto attano dh²tara½ tassa p±daparic±rika½ katv± ad±si. Br±hmaºo ta½ gahetv± b±r±ºasito avid³re ekasmi½ br±hmaºag±me v±sa½ kappesi. Br±hmaºo g±manigamar±jadh±n²su caranto satta kah±paºasat±ni labhitv± “ala½ me ettaka½ dhana½ d±sid±sam³l±y±”ti nivattitv± attano g±ma½ ±gacchanto ekasmi½ udakaph±sukaµµh±ne pasibbaka½ muñcitv± sattu½ kh±ditv± pasibbakamukha½ abandhitv±va p±n²ya½ pivitu½ otiººo. Athekasmi½ rukkhasusire eko kaºhasappo sattugandha½ gh±yitv± pasibbaka½ pavisitv± bhoga½ ±bhujitv± sattu½ kh±danto nipajji. Br±hmaºo ±gantv± pasibbakassa abbhantara½ anoloketv± pasibbaka½ bandhitv± a½se katv± p±y±si. Antar±magge ekasmi½ rukkhe nibbattadevat± khandhaviµape µhatv± “br±hmaºa, sace antar±magge vasissasi, saya½ marissasi, sace ajja ghara½ gamissasi, bhariy± te marissat²”ti vatv± antaradh±yi. So olokento devata½ adisv± bh²to maraºabhayatajjito rodanto paridevanto b±r±ºasinagaradv±ra½ samp±puºi.
Tad± ca pannarasuposatho hoti alaªkatadhamm±sane nis²ditv± bodhisattassa dhammakathanadivaso. Mah±jano n±n±gandhapupph±dihattho vaggavaggo hutv± dhammi½ katha½ sotu½ gacchati. Br±hmaºo ta½ disv± “kaha½ gacchath±”ti pucchitv± “br±hmaºa, ajja senakapaº¹ito madhurassarena buddhal²¼±ya dhamma½ deseti, ki½ tvampi na j±n±s²”ti vutte cintesi “paº¹ito kira dhammakathiko, ahañcamhi maraºabhayatajjito, paº¹it± kho pana mahantampi soka½ haritu½ sakkonti, may±pi tattha gantv± dhamma½ sotu½ vaµµat²”ti. So tehi saddhi½ tattha gantv± mah±satta½ pariv±retv± nisinn±ya sar±jik±ya paris±ya pariyante sattupasibbakena khandhagatena dhamm±sanato avid³re maraºabhayatajjito rodam±no aµµh±si. Mah±satto ±k±sagaªga½ otaranto viya amatavassa½ vassento viya ca dhamma½ desesi. Mah±jano sañj±tasomanasso s±dhuk±ra½ datv± dhamma½ assosi.
Paº¹it± ca n±ma dis±cakkhuk± honti. Tasmi½ khaºe mah±satto pasannapañcapas±d±ni akkh²ni umm²letv± samantato parisa½ olokento ta½ br±hmaºa½ disv± cintesi “ettak± paris± somanassaj±t± s±dhuk±ra½ datv± dhamma½ suºanti, aya½ paneko br±hmaºo domanassappatto rodati, etassa abbhantare assujananasamatthena sokena bhavitabba½, tamassa ambilena paharitv± tambamala½ viya padumapal±sato udakabindu½ viya vinivattetv± ettheva na½ nissoka½ tuµµham±nasa½ katv± dhamma½ desess±m²”ti. So ta½ ±mantetv± “br±hmaºa, senakapaº¹ito n±m±ha½, id±neva ta½ nissoka½ kariss±mi, vissattho katheh²”ti tena saddhi½ sallapanto paµhama½ g±tham±ha–
46. “Vibbhantacitto kupitindriyosi, nettehi te v±rigaº± savanti;
ki½ te naµµha½ ki½ pana patthay±no, idh±gam± brahme tadiªgha br³h²”ti.
Tattha kupitindriyos²ti cakkhundriyameva sandh±ya “kupitindriyos²”ti ±ha. V±rigaº±ti assubind³ni. Iªgh±ti codanatthe nip±to. Tañhi mah±satto codento evam±ha “br±hmaºa, satt± n±ma dv²hi k±raºehi socanti paridevanti sattasaªkh±resu kismiñcideva piyaj±tike naµµhe v±, kiñcideva piyaj±tika½ patthetv± alabhant± v±. Tattha ki½ te naµµha½, ki½ v± pana patthayanto tva½ idha ±gato, ida½ me khippa½ br³h²”ti.

47. “Miyyetha bhariy± vajato mamajja, agacchato maraºam±ha yakkho;
etena dukkhena pavedhitosmi, akkh±hi me senaka etamatthan”ti.
Tattha vajatoti geha½ gacchantassa. Agacchatoti agacchantassa. Yakkhoti antar±magge ek± rukkhadevat± evam±h±ti vadati. S± kira devat± “pasibbake te br±hmaºa, kaºhasappo”ti an±cikkhant² bodhisattassa ñ±º±nubh±vappak±sanattha½ n±cikkhi. Etena dukkhen±ti gacchato bhariy±ya maraºadukkhena, agacchato attano maraºadukkhena, tenasmi pavedhito ghaµµito kampito. Etamatthanti eta½ k±raºa½. Yena me k±raºena gacchato bhariy±ya maraºa½, agacchato attano maraºa½ hoti, eta½ me k±raºa½ ±cikkh±h²ti attho.
Mah±satto br±hmaºassa vacana½ sutv± samuddamatthake j±la½ khipanto viya ñ±ºaj±la½ pattharitv± “imesa½ satt±na½ bah³ni maraºak±raº±ni. Samudde nimugg±pi maranti, tattha v±¼amacchehi gahit±pi, gaªg±ya patit±pi, tattha susum±rehi gahit±pi, rukkhato patit±pi, kaºµakena viddh±pi, n±nappak±rehi ±vudhehi pahaµ±pi, visa½ kh±ditv±pi, ubbandhitv±pi, pap±te patit±pi, atis²t±d²hi v± n±nappak±rehi v± rogehi upaddut±pi marantiyeva, eva½ bah³su maraºak±raºesu katarena nu kho k±raºena ajjesa br±hmaºo antar±magge vasanto saya½ marissati, gehamassa vajato bhariy± marissat²”ti cintesi. Cintento eva br±hmaºassa khandhe pasibbaka½ disv± “imasmi½ pasibbake ekena sappena paviµµhena bhavitabba½, pavisanto ca paneso imasmi½ br±hmaºe p±tar±sasamaye sattu½ kh±ditv± pasibbakamukha½ abandhitv± p±n²ya½ p±tu½ gate sattugandhena sappo paviµµho bhavissati. Br±hmaºopi p±n²ya½ pivitv± ±gato sappassa paviµµhabh±va½ aj±nitv± pasibbaka½ bandhitv± ±d±ya pakkanto bhavissati, sac±ya½ antar±magge vasanto s±ya½ vasanaµµh±ne “sattu½ kh±diss±m²”ti pasibbaka½ muñcitv± hattha½ pavesessati atha na½ sappo hatthe ¹a½sitv± j²vitakkhaya½ p±pessati, idamassa antar±magge vasantassa maraºak±raºa½. Sace pana geha½ gaccheyya, pasibbako bhariy±ya hatthagato bhavissati, s± ‘antobhaº¹a½ olokess±m²”ti pasibbaka½ muñcitv± hattha½ pavesessati, atha na½ sappo ¹a½sitv± j²vitakkhaya½ p±pessati, idamassa ajja geha½ gatassa bhariy±ya maraºak±raºan”ti up±yakosallañ±ºeneva aññ±si.
Athassa etadahosi “imin± kaºhasappena s³rena nibbhayena bhavitabba½. Ayañhi br±hmaºassa mah±ph±suka½ paharantopi pasibbake attano calana½ v± phandana½ v± na dasseti, evar³p±ya paris±ya majjhepi attano atthibh±va½ na dasseti, tasm± imin± kaºhasappena s³rena nibbhayena bhavitabban”ti. Idampi so up±yakosallañ±ºeneva dibbacakkhun± passanto viya aññ±si. Eva½ sar±jik±ya paris±ya majjhe sappa½ pasibbaka½ pavisanta½ disv± µhitapuriso viya mah±satto up±yakosallañ±ºeneva paricchinditv± br±hmaºassa pañha½ kathento tatiya½ g±tham±ha–
48. “Bah³ni µh±n±ni vicintayitv±, yamettha vakkh±mi tadeva sacca½;
maññ±mi te br±hmaºa sattubhasta½, aj±nato kaºhasappo paviµµho”ti.
Tattha bah³ni µh±n±n²ti bah³ni k±raº±ni. Vicintayitv±ti paµivijjhitv± cint±vasena pavattapaµivedho hutv±. Yamettha vakkh±m²ti ya½ te aha½ etesu k±raºesu eta½ k±raºa½ vakkh±mi. Tadeva saccanti tadeva tatha½ dibbacakkhun± disv± kathitasadisa½ bhavissat²ti d²peti. Maññ±m²ti sallakkhemi. Sattubhastanti sattupasibbaka½. Aj±natoti aj±nantasseva eko kaºhasappo paviµµhoti maññ±m²ti.
Evañca pana vatv± “atthi te br±hmaºa, etasmi½ pasibbake satt³”ti pucchi. “Atthi, paº¹it±”ti. “Ajja p±tar±savel±ya sattu½ kh±d²”ti? “¾ma, paº¹it±”ti. “Kattha nis²ditv±”ti? “Araññe rukkham³lasmi½, paº¹it±”ti. “Sattu½ kh±ditv± p±n²ya½ p±tu½ gacchanto pasibbakamukha½ bandhi, na bandh²”ti? “Na bandhi½, paº¹it±”ti. “P±n²ya½ pivitv± ±gato pasibbaka½ oloketv± bandh²”ti. “Anoloketv±va bandhi½, paº¹it±”ti. “Br±hmaºa, tava p±n²ya½ p±tu½ gatak±le aj±nantasseva te sattugandhena pasibbaka½ sappo paviµµhoti maññ±mi, evamettha ±gato tva½, tasm± pasibbaka½ ot±retv± parisamajjhe µhapetv± pasibbakamukha½ mocetv± paµikkamma µhito eka½ daº¹aka½ gahetv± pasibbaka½ t±va pahara, tato patthaµaphaºa½ sus³tisadda½ katv± nikkhamanta½ kaºhasappa½ disv± nikkaªkho bhavissat²”ti catuttha½ g±tham±ha–
49. “¾d±ya daº¹a½ parisumbha bhasta½, passe¼am³ga½ uraga½ dujivha½;
chindajja kaªkha½ vicikicchit±ni, bhujaªgama½ passa pamuñca bhastan”ti.
Tattha parisumbh±ti pahara. Passe¼am³ganti e¼a½ paggharantena mukhena e¼am³ga½ pasibbakato nikkhamanta½ dujivha½ uraga½ passa. Chandajja kaªkha½ vicikicchit±n²ti “atthi nu kho me pasibbake sappo, ud±hu natth²”ti kaªkhameva punappuna½ uppajjam±n±ni vicikicchit±ni ca ajja chinda, mayha½ saddaha, avitathañhi me veyy±karaºa½, id±neva nikkhamanta½ bhujaªgama½ passa pamuñca bhastanti.
Br±hmaºo mah±sattassa katha½ sutv± sa½viggo bhayappatto tath± ak±si. Sappopi sattubhaste daº¹ena pahaµe pasibbakamukh± nikkhamitv± mah±jana½ olokento aµµh±si. Tamattha½ pak±sento satth± pañcama½ g±tham±ha–
50. “Sa½viggar³po paris±ya majjhe, so br±hmaºo sattubhasta½ pamuñci;
atha nikkhami urago uggatejo, ±s²viso sappo phaºa½ karitv±”ti.
Sappassa phaºa½ katv± nikkhantak±le “mah±sattassa sabbaññubuddhasseva by±karaºa½ ahos²”ti mah±jano celukkhepasahass±ni pavattesi, aªguliphoµanasahass±ni paribbhami½su, ghanameghavassa½ viya sattaratanavassa½ vassi, s±dhuk±rasahass±ni pavatti½su, mah±pathav²bhijjanasaddo viya ahosi. Ida½ pana buddhal²¼±ya evar³passa pañhassa kathana½ n±ma neva j±tiy± bala½, na gottakulappades±na½ bala½, kassa paneta½ balanti? Paññ±ya bala½. Paññav± hi puggalo vipassana½ va¹¹hetv± ariyamaggadv±ra½ vivaritv± amatamah±nibb±na½ pavisati, s±vakap±ramimpi paccekabodhimpi samm±sambodhimpi paµivijjhati. Amatamah±nibb±nasamp±pakesu hi dhammesu paññ±va seµµh±, avases± tass± pariv±r± honti. Teneta½ vutta½–
“Paññ± hi seµµh± kusal± vadanti, nakkhattar±j±riva t±rak±na½;

Eva½ kathite ca pana mah±sattena pañhe eko ahituº¹iko sappassa mukhabandhana½ katv± sappa½ gahetv± araññe vissajjesi. Br±hmaºo r±j±na½ upasaªkamitv± jay±petv± añjali½ paggayha rañño thuti½ karonto upa¹¹hag±tham±ha–
51. “Suladdhal±bh± janakassa rañño;
yo passat² senaka½ s±dhupaññan”ti.
Tassattho yo s±dhupañña½ uttamapañña½ senakapaº¹ita½ akkh²ni umm²letv± icchiticchitakkhaºe piyacakkh³hi passitu½ labhati, tassa rañño janakassa ete icchiticchitakkhaºe dassanal±bh± suladdhal±bh± vata, etena laddhesu sabbal±bhesu eteva l±bh± suladdhal±bh± n±m±ti.
Br±hmaºopi rañño thuti½ katv± puna pasibbakato satta kah±paºasat±ni gahetv± mah±sattassa thuti½ katv± tuµµhid±ya½ d±tuk±mo diya¹¹hag±tham±ha–
“Vivaµµachaddo nusi sabbadass², ñ±ºa½ nu te br±hmaºa bhi½sar³pa½.
52. “Im±ni me sattasat±ni atthi, gaºh±hi sabb±ni dad±mi tuyha½;
tay± hi me j²vitamajja laddha½, athopi bhariy±ya mak±si sotthin”ti.
Tattha vivaµµachaddo nusi sabbadass²ti ki½ nu kho tva½ sabbesu dhamm±k±resu vivaµµachadano vivaµµaneyyadhammo sabbaññubuddhoti thutivasena pucchati. ѱºa½ nu te br±hmaºa bhi½sar³panti ud±hu asabbaññussapi sato tava ñ±ºa½ ativiya bhi½sar³pa½ sabbaññutaññ±ºa½ viya balavanti. Tay± hi meti tay± hi dinnatt± ajja may± j²vita½ laddha½. Athopi bhariy±ya mak±si sotthinti athopi me bhariy±ya tvameva sotthi½ ak±si.
Iti so vatv± “sacepi satasahassa½ bhaveyya, dadeyyamev±ha½, ettakameva me dhana½, im±ni me satta sat±ni gaºh±”ti punappuna½ bodhisatta½ y±ci. Ta½ sutv± bodhisatto aµµhama½ g±tham±ha–
53. “Na paº¹it± vetanam±diyanti, citr±hi g±th±hi subh±sit±hi;
itopi te brahme dadantu vitta½, ±d±ya tva½ gaccha saka½ niketan”ti.
Tattha vetananti vettana½, ayameva v± p±µho. Itopi te brahmeti br±hmaºa, ito mama p±dam³latopi tuyha½ dhana½ dadantu. Vitta½ ±d±ya tva½ gacch±ti ito aññ±ni t²ºi sat±ni gahetv± sahassabhaº¹ika½ ±d±ya sakanivesana½ gaccha.
Evañca pana vatv± mah±satto br±hmaºassa sahassa½ p³r±pento kah±paºe d±petv± “br±hmaºa, kena tva½ dhanabhikkh±ya pesito”ti pucchi. “Bhariy±ya me paº¹it±”ti. “Bhariy± pana te mahallik±, dahar±”ti. “Dahar±, paº¹it±”ti. “Tena hi s± aññena saddhi½ an±c±ra½ karont² ‘nibbhay± hutv± kariss±m²’ti ta½ pesesi, sace ime kah±paºe ghara½ nessasi, s± te dukkhena laddhakah±paºe attano j±rassa dassati, tasm± tva½ ujukameva geha½ agantv± bahig±me rukkham³le v± yattha katthaci v± kah±paºe µhapetv± paviseyy±s²”ti vatv± ta½ uyyojesi. So g±masam²pa½ gantv± ekasmi½ rukkham³le kah±paºe µhapetv± s±ya½ geha½ agam±si. Bhariy±pissa tasmi½ khaºe j±rena saddhi½ nisinn± ahosi. Br±hmaºo dv±re µhatv± “bhot²”ti ±ha. S± tassa sadda½ sallakkhetv± d²pa½ nibb±petv± dv±ra½ vivaritv± br±hmaºe anto paviµµhe itara½ n²haritv± dv±ram³le µhapetv± geha½ pavisitv± pasibbake kiñci adisv± “br±hmaºa, ki½ te bhikkha½ caritv± laddhan”ti pucchi. “Sahassa½ me laddhan”ti. “Kaha½ pana tan”ti. “Asukaµµh±ne n±ma µhapita½, p±tova ±hariss±mi, m± cintay²”ti. S± gantv± j±rassa ±cikkhi. So nikkhamitv± attan± µhapita½ viya gaºhi.
Br±hmaºo punadivase gantv± kah±paºe apassanto bodhisattassa santika½ gantv± “ki½, br±hmaº±”ti vutte “kah±paºe na pass±mi, paº¹it±”ti ±ha. “Bhariy±ya te ±cikkh²”ti? “¾ma, paº¹it±”ti. Mah±satto t±ya j±rassa ±cikkhitabh±va½ ñatv± “atthi pana te br±hmaºa, bhariy±ya kul³pakabr±hmaºo”ti pucchi. “Atthi, paº¹it±”ti. “Tuyhampi atth²”ti? “¾ma, paº¹it±”ti. Athassa mah±satto sattanna½ divas±na½ paribbaya½ d±petv± “gaccha paµhamadivase tava satta, bhariy±ya te satt±ti cuddasa br±hmaºe nimantetv± bhojetha, punadivasato paµµh±ya ekeka½ h±petv± sattame divase tava eka½, bhariy±ya te ekanti dve br±hmaºe nimantetv± bhariy±ya te satta divase nimantitabr±hmaºassa nibaddha½ ±gamanabh±va½ ñatv± mayha½ ±roceh²”ti ±ha. Br±hmaºo tath± katv± “sallakkhito me paº¹ita, nibaddha½ bhuñjanakabr±hmaºo”ti mah±sattassa ±rocesi.
Bodhisatto tena saddhi½ purise pesetv± ta½ br±hmaºa½ ±har±petv± “asukarukkham³lato te imassa br±hmaºassa santaka½ kah±paºasahassa½ gahitan”ti pucchi. “Na gaºh±mi, paº¹it±”ti. “Tva½ mama senakapaº¹itabh±va½ na j±n±si, ±har±pess±mi te kah±paºe”ti. So bh²to “gahit± me”ti sampaµicchi. “Kuhi½ te µhapit±”ti? “Tattheva, paº¹ita, µhapit±”ti. Bodhisatto br±hmaºa½ pucchi “br±hmaºa, ki½ te s±yeva bhariy± hotu, ud±hu añña½ gaºhissas²”ti. “S±yeva me hotu, paº¹it±”ti. Bodhisatto manusse pesetv± br±hmaºassa kah±paºe ca br±hmaºiñca ±har±petv± corabr±hmaºassa hatthato kah±paºe br±hmaºassa d±petv± itarassa r±j±ºa½ k±retv± nagar± n²har±petv± br±hmaºiy±pi r±j±ºa½ k±retv± br±hmaºassa mahanta½ yasa½ datv± attanoyeva santike vas±pesi.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± sacc±ni pak±setv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi, saccapariyos±ne bah³ sot±pattiphal±d²ni sacchikari½su. Tad± br±hmaºo ±nando ahosi, rukkhadevat± s±riputto, paris± buddhaparis±, senakapaº¹ito pana ahameva ahosinti.
