Anut²rac±r² bhaddanteti ida½ satth± jetavane viharanto upananda½ sakyaputta½ ±rabbha kathesi. So hi s±sane pabbajitv± appicchat±diguºe pah±ya mah±taºho ahosi. Vass³pan±yik±ya dve tayo vih±re pariggahetv± ekasmi½ chatta½ v± up±hana½ v± ekasmi½ kattarayaµµhi½ v± udakatumba½ v± µhapetv± ekasmi½ saya½ vasati. So ekasmi½ janapadavih±re vassa½ upagantv± “bhikkh³hi n±ma appicchehi bhavitabban”ti ±k±se canda½ uµµh±pento viya bhikkh³na½ paccayasantosad²paka½ ariyava½sapaµipada½ kathesi. Ta½ sutv± bhikkh³ man±p±ni pattac²var±ni cha¹¹etv± mattik±patt±ni ceva pa½suk³lac²var±ni ca gaºhi½su. So t±ni attano vasanaµµh±ne µhapetv± vutthavasso pav±retv± y±naka½ p³retv± jetavana½ gacchanto antar±magge ekassa araññavih±rassa piµµhibh±ge p±de valliy± palibuddho “addh± ettha kiñci laddhabba½ bhavissat²”ti ta½ vih±ra½ p±visi. Tattha pana dve mahallak± bhikkh³ vassa½ upagacchi½su. Te dve ca th³las±µake ekañca sukhumakambala½ labhitv± bh±jetu½ asakkont± ta½ disv± “thero no bh±jetv± dassat²”ti tuµµhacitt± “maya½, bhante, ima½ vass±v±sika½ bh±jetu½ na sakkoma, ima½ no niss±ya viv±do hoti, ida½ amh±ka½ bh±jetv± deth±”ti ±ha½su. So “s±dhu bh±jess±m²”ti dve th³las±µake dvinnampi bh±jetv± “aya½ amh±ka½ vinayadhar±na½ p±puº±t²”ti kambala½ gahetv± pakk±mi.
Tepi ther± kambale s±lay± teneva saddhi½ jetavana½ gantv± vinayadhar±na½ bhikkh³na½ tamattha½ ±rocetv± “labbhati nu kho, bhante, vinayadhar±na½ eva½ vilopa½ kh±ditun”ti ±ha½su. Bhikkh³ upanandattherena ±bhata½ pattac²varar±si½ disv± “mah±puññosi tva½ ±vuso, bahu½ te pattac²vara½ laddhan”ti vadi½su. So “kuto me ±vuso, puñña½, imin± me up±yena ida½ laddhan”ti sabba½ kathesi. Bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “±vuso, upanando sakyaputto mah±taºho mah±lobho”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, upanandena paµipad±ya anucchavika½ kata½, parassa paµipada½ kathentena n±ma bhikkhun± paµhama½ attano anucchavika½ katv± pacch± paro ovaditabbo”ti.
“Att±nameva paµhama½, patir³pe nivesaye;
athaññamanus±seyya, na kilisseyya paº¹ito”ti. (Dha. pa. 158)–

Im±ya dhammapade g±th±ya dhamma½ desetv± “na, bhikkhave, upanando id±neva, pubbepesa mah±taºho mah±lobhova, na ca pana id±neva, pubbepesa imesa½ santaka½ vilumpiyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.

At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto nad²t²re rukkhadevat± ahosi. Tad± eko siªg±lo m±y±vi½ n±ma bhariya½ gahetv± nad²t²re ekasmi½ µh±ne vasi. Athekadivasa½ siªg±l² siªg±la½ ±ha “doha¼o me s±mi, uppanno, allarohitamaccha½ kh±ditu½ icch±m²”ti. Siªg±lo “appossukk± hohi, ±hariss±mi te”ti nad²t²re caranto valliy± p±de palibujjhitv± anut²rameva agam±si. Tasmi½ khaºe gambh²rac±r² ca anut²rac±r² c±ti dve udd± macche pariyesant± t²re aµµha½su. Tesu gambh²rac±r² mahanta½ rohitamaccha½ disv± vegena udake pavisitv± ta½ naªguµµhe gaºhi. Balav± maccho parika¹¹hanto y±si. So gambh²rac±r² uddo “mah±maccho ubhinnampi no pahossati, ehi me sah±yo hoh²”ti itarena saddhi½ sallapanto paµhama½ g±tham±ha–
29. “Anut²rac±r² bhaddante, sah±yamanudh±va ma½;
mah± me gahito maccho, so ma½ harati vegas±”ti.
Tattha sah±yamanudh±va manti sah±ya anudh±va ma½, sandhivasena ma-k±ro vutto. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– yath±ha½ imin± macchena na sa½h²r±mi, eva½ ma½ naªguµµhakhaº¹e gahetv± tva½ anudh±v±ti.

30. “Gambh²rac±r² bhaddante, da¼ha½ gaºh±hi th±mas±;
aha½ ta½ uddhariss±mi, supaººo urag±miv±”ti.
Tattha th±mas±ti th±mena. Uddhariss±m²ti n²hariss±mi. Supaººo urag±miv±ti garu¼o sappa½ viya.
Atha dvepi te ekato hutv± rohitamaccha½ n²haritv± thale µhapetv± m±retv± “tva½ bh±jehi, tva½ bh±jeh²”ti kalaha½ katv± bh±jetu½ asakkont± µhapetv± nis²di½su. Tasmi½ k±le siªg±lo ta½ µh±na½ anuppatto. Te ta½ disv± ubhopi paccuggamana½ katv± “aya½, samma, dabbhapupphamaccho amhehi ekato hutv± gahito, ta½ no bh±jetu½ asakkont±na½ viv±do uppanno, samabh±ga½ no bh±jetv± deh²”ti tatiya½ g±tham±ha½su–
31. “Viv±do no samuppanno, dabbhapuppha suºohi me;
samehi medhaga½ samm±, viv±do v³pasammatan”ti.
Tattha dabbhapupph±ti dabbhapupphasam±navaººat±ya ta½ ±lapanti. Medhaganti kalaha½.

32. “Dhammaµµhoha½ pure ±si½, bah³ a¹¹± me t²rit±;
samemi medhaga½ samm±, viv±do v³pasammatan”ti.–

33. “Anut²rac±ri naªguµµha½, s²sa½ gambh²rac±rino;
acc±ya½ majjhimo khaº¹o, dhammaµµhassa bhavissat²”ti.–

Tattha paµhamag±th±ya ayamattho– aha½ pubbe r±j³na½ vinicchay±macco ±si½, tena may± vinicchaye nis²ditv± bah³ a¹¹± t²rit±, tesa½ tesa½ br±hmaºagahapatik±d²na½ bah³ a¹¹± t²rit± vinicchit±, sv±ha½ tumh±dis±na½ samaj±tik±na½ catuppad±na½ a¹¹a½ t²retu½ ki½ na sakkhiss±mi, aha½ vo samemi medhaga½, samm± ma½ niss±ya tumh±ka½ viv±do v³pasammat³ti
Evañca pana vatv± maccha½ tayo koµµh±se katv± anut²rac±ri tva½ naªguµµha½ gaºha, s²sa½ gambh²rac±rino hotu. Acc±ya½ majjhimo khaº¹oti apica aya½ majjhimo koµµh±so. Atha v± acc±ti aticca, ime dve koµµh±se atikkamitv± µhito aya½ majjhimo khaº¹o dhammaµµhassa vinicchayas±mikassa mayha½ bhavissat²ti.
Eva½ ta½ maccha½ vibhajitv± “tumhe kalaha½ akatv± naªguµµhañca s²sañca kh±dath±”ti vatv± majjhimakhaº¹a½ mukhena ¹a½sitv± tesa½ passant±na½yeva pal±yi. Te sahassa½ par±jit± viya dummukh± nis²ditv± g±tham±ha½su–
34. “Cirampi bhakkho abhavissa, sace na vivademase;
as²saka½ anaªguµµha½, siªg±lo harati rohitan”ti.
Tattha ciramp²ti dve tayo divase sandh±ya vutta½.
Siªg±lopi “ajja bhariya½ rohitamaccha½ kh±d±pess±m²”ti tuµµhacitto tass± santika½ agam±si. S± ta½ ±gacchanta½ disv± abhinandam±n±–
35. “Yath±pi r±j± nandeyya, rajja½ laddh±na khattiyo;
ev±hamajja nand±mi, disv± puººamukha½ patin”ti.–

Ima½ g±tha½ vatv± adhigam³p±ya½ pucchant²–

36. “Katha½ nu thalajo santo, udake maccha½ par±masi;
puµµho me samma akkh±hi, katha½ adhigata½ tay±”ti.–

Tattha katha½ n³ti “kh±da, bhadde”ti macchakhaº¹e purato µhapite “katha½ nu tva½ thalajo sam±no udake maccha½ gaºh²”ti pucchi.
Siªg±lo tass± adhigam³p±ya½ ±cikkhanto anantarag±tham±ha–
37. “Viv±dena kis± honti, viv±dena dhanakkhay±;
j²n± udd± viv±dena, bhuñja m±y±vi rohitan”ti.
Tattha viv±dena kis± hont²ti bhadde, ime satt± viv±da½ karont± viv±da½ niss±ya kis± appama½salohit± honti. Viv±dena dhanakkhay±ti hiraññasuvaºº±d²na½ dhan±na½ khay± viv±deneva honti. Dv²supi vivadantesu eko par±jito par±jitatt± dhanakkhaya½ p±puº±ti, itaro jayabh±gad±nena. J²n± udd±ti dve udd±pi viv±deneva ima½ maccha½ j²n±, tasm± tva½ may± ±bhatassa uppatti½ m± puccha, kevala½ ima½ bhuñja m±y±vi rohitanti.
Itar± abhisambuddhag±th±–
38. “Evameva manussesu, viv±do yattha j±yati;
dhammaµµha½ paµidh±vati, so hi nesa½ vin±yako;
dhan±pi tattha j²yanti, r±jakoso pava¹¹hat²”ti.
Tattha evamev±ti bhikkhave, yath± ete udd± j²n±, evameva manussesupi yasmi½ µh±ne viv±do j±yati, tattha te manuss± dhammaµµha½ patidh±vanti, vinicchayas±mika½ upasaªkamanti. Ki½k±raº±? So hi nesa½ vin±yako, so tesa½ viv±d±pann±na½ viv±dav³pasamakoti attho. Dhan±pi tatth±ti tattha te viv±d±pann± dhanatopi j²yanti, attano santak± parih±yanti, daº¹ena ceva jayabh±gaggahaºena ca r±jakoso pava¹¹hat²ti.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± siªg±lo upanando ahosi, udd± dve mahallak±, tassa k±raºassa paccakkhak±rik± rukkhadevat± pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
