So kira s±vatthiv±s² kulaputto buddhas±sane pabbajitv± maraºabh²ruko ahosi, appamattakampi s±kh±calana½ daº¹akapatana½ sakuºacatuppadasadda½ v± añña½ v± tath±r³pa½ sutv± maraºabhayatajjito hutv± kucchiya½ viddhasaso viya kampanto vicari. Bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “±vuso, asuko kira bhikkhu maraºabh²ruko appamattakampi sadda½ sutv± vikampam±no pal±yati, imesañca satt±na½ maraºameva dhuva½, j²vita½ addhuva½, nanu tadeva yoniso manasi k±tabban”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte ta½ bhikkhu½ pakkos±petv± “sacca½ kira tva½ bhikkhu maraºabh²ruko”ti vatv± “±ma, bhante”ti tena paµiññ±to “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepesa maraºabh²rukoyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto s³kariy± kucchimhi paµisandhi½ gaºhi. S³kar² pariºatagabbh± dve putte vij±yi. S± ekadivasa½ te gahetv± ekasmi½ ±v±µe nipajji. Athek± b±r±ºasidv±rag±mav±sin² mahallik± kapp±sakhettato pacchipuººa½ kapp±sa½ ±d±ya yaµµhiy± bh³mi½ ±koµent² ±gacchi. S³kar² ta½ sadda½ sutv± maraºabhayena puttake cha¹¹etv± pal±yi. Mahallik± s³karapotake disv± puttasañña½ paµilabhitv± pacchiya½ pakkhipitv± ghara½ netv± jeµµhakassa mah±tuº¹ilo, kaniµµhassa c³¼atuº¹iloti n±ma½ karitv± te puttake viya posesi. Te aparabh±ge va¹¹hitv± th³lasar²r± ahesu½. Mahallik± “ime no m³lena deh²”ti vuccam±n±pi “putt± me”ti vatv± kassaci na deti. Dhutt± “amma, manuss±na½ s³kar± n±ma putt± na honti, dehi no”ti punappuna½ y±cant±pi alabhitv± mahallika½ sura½ p±yetv± mattak±le “amma, s³karehi ki½ karissasi, m³la½ gahetv± paribbaya½ karoh²”ti tass± hatthe kah±paºe µhapayi½su.
S± kah±paºe gahetv± “t±t±, mah±tuº¹ila½ d±tu½ na sakkomi. C³¼atuº¹ila½ pana gaºhath±”ti ±ha. “Kaha½ so”ti? “Aya½ etasmi½ gaccheti, saddamassa deh²”ti. “¾h±ra½ na pass±m²”ti. Dhutt± m³lena eka½ bhattap±ti½ ±har±pesu½. Mahallik± ta½ gahetv± dv±re µhapita½ s³karadoºi½ p³retv± doºisam²pe aµµh±si. Ti½samatt±pi dhutt± p±sahatth± tattheva aµµha½su. Mahallik± “t±ta, c³¼atuº¹ila, eh²”ti tassa saddamak±si. Ta½ sutv± mah±tuº¹ilo “ettaka½ k±la½ mama m±tar± c³¼atuº¹ilassa saddo na dinnapubbo, ma½yeva paµhama½ sadd±yati, avassa½ ajja amh±ka½ bhaya½ uppanna½ bhavissat²”ti aññ±si. So kaniµµha½ ±mantesi “t±ta, mama m±t± ta½ pakkosati, gaccha t±va j±n±h²”ti. So gacch± nikkhamitv± bhattadoºisam²pe tesa½ µhitabh±va½ disv± “ajja me maraºa½ uppannan”ti maraºabhayatajjito nivattitv± kampam±no bh±tu santika½ ±gantv± thambhitu½ n±sakkhi, kampam±no paribbhami. Tattha navachannaked±ni diyyat²ti bh±tika, pubbe amh±ka½ kuº¹akay±gu v± jh±mabhatta½ v± diyyati, ajja pana navachannaka½ nav±k±ra½ d±na½ diyyati. Puºº±ya½ doº²ti aya½ amh±ka½ bhattadoºi suddhabhattassa puºº±. Suv±min² µhit±ti ayy±pi no tass± santike µhit±. Bahuke janeti na kevalañca ayy±va, aññopi bahuko jano p±sap±ºiko µhito. No ca kho me paµibh±t²ti aya½ eva½ etesa½ µhitabh±vopi ida½ bhatta½ bhuñjitumpi mayha½ na paµibh±ti, na ruccat²ti attho.

gaºh±hi nava½ vilepana½, yassa gandho na kad±ci chijjat²”ti.
Tattha tasasi bhamas²ti maraºabhayena uttasasi, teneva kilamanto bhamasi. Leºamicchas²ti patiµµha½ olokesi. Att±ºos²ti t±ta, pubbe amh±ka½ m±t± paµisaraºa½ ahosi, s± ajja pana nirapekkh± amhe cha¹¹esi, id±ni kuhi½ gamissasi. Ogah±ti og±ha, ayameva v± p±µho. Pav±hay±ti pav±hehi, h±reh²ti attho. Na chijjat²ti na nassati. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– t±ta, sace maraºato tasasi, akaddama½ pokkharaºi½ otaritv± tava sar²re sabba½ sedañca malañca pav±hetv± surabhigandhavilepana½ vilimp±ti.
Tassa dasa p±ramiyo ±vajjetv± mett±p±rami½ purec±rika½ katv± paµhama½ pada½ ud±harantasseva saddo sakala½ dv±dasayojanika½ b±r±ºasi½ ajjhottharitv± gato. Tattha dhammoti pañcas²la-aµµhas²ladasas²l±ni t²ºi sucarit±ni sattati½sabodhipakkhiyadhamm± amatamah±nibb±nanti sabbopesa dhammo n±ma. Akaddamoti r±gadosamoham±nadiµµhikilesakaddam±na½ abh±vena akaddamo. Imin± sesadhammato vinivattetv± nibb±nameva dasseti. “Y±vat±, bhikkhave, dhamm± saªkhat± v± asaªkhat± v±, vir±go tesa½ dhamm±na½ aggamakkh±yati, yadida½ madanimmadano pip±savinayo ±layasamuggh±to vaµµupacchedo taºhakkhayo vir±go nirodho nibb±nan”ti (a. ni. 4.34; itivu. 90) hi vutta½, tadeva dassento, t±ta c³¼atuº¹ila, aha½ nibb±nata¼±ka½ “rahado”ti kathemi. Ta½ paneta½ ekavidhena p±pa½ yadida½ manopadoso, duvidhena p±pa½ p±pakañca s²la½, p±pik± ca diµµhi, tividhena p±pa½ t²ºi duccarit±ni, catubbidhena p±pa½ catt±ri agatigaman±ni, pañcavidhena p±pa½ pañca cetokhil±, chabbidhena p±pa½ cha ag±rav±, sattavidhena p±pa½ satta asaddhamm±, aµµhavidhena p±pa½ aµµha micchatt±, navavidhena p±pa½ nava ±gh±tavatth³ni, dasavidhena p±pa½ dasa akusalakammapath±, bahuvidhena p±pa½ r±go doso mohoti ekakadukatik±divasena vibhatt± akusal± dhamm±, iti sabbampeta½ p±pa½ “sar²ranissitasedamalasadisan”ti paº¹itehi kathita½.
S²lanti pañcas²la½ dasas²la½ catup±risuddhis²la½. “Ida½, t±ta, s²la½ catujj±tigandhavilepanasadisan”ti vadati. Tass±ti tassa silassa gandho t²su vayesu kad±ci na chijjati, sakalaloka½ pattharitv± gacchati.
“Na pupphagandho paµiv±tameti, na candana½ taggaramallik± v±;
satañca gandho paµiv±tameti, sabb± dis± sappuriso pav±yati.
“Candana½ tagara½ v±pi, uppala½ atha vassik²;
etesa½ gandhaj±t±na½, s²lagandho anuttaro.
“Appamatto aya½ gandho, yv±ya½ tagaracandana½;
yo ca s²lavata½ gandho, v±ti devesu uttamo”ti. (Dha. pa. 54-56).

Ramam±n±va jahanti j²vitanti t±ta c³¼atuº¹ila, m± soci m± paridevi, maraºassa n±ma te bh±yanti, yesa½ abbhantare s²l±diguº± natthi. Maya½ pana s²l±c±rasampann± puññavanto, tasm± amh±dis± satt± ramam±n±va jahanti j²vitanti.
Eva½ mah±satto madhurena sarena buddhal²¼±ya dhamma½ desesi. Mah±janak±y± aªguliyo phoµesu½, celukkhep± ca pavatti½su, s±dhuk±rasaddapuººa½ antalikkha½ ahosi. B±r±ºasir±j± bodhisatta½ rajjena p³jetv± mahallik±ya yasa½ datv± ubhopi te gandhodakena nh±petv± gandh±d²hi vilimp±petv± g²v±su maºiratan±ni pi¼andh±petv± ghara½ netv± puttaµµh±ne µhapetv± mahantena pariv±rena paµijaggi. Bodhisatto rañño pañca s²l±ni ad±si. Sabbe b±r±ºasiv±sino ca k±siraµµhav±sino ca pañca s²l±ni rakkhi½su. Mah±satto nesa½ pakkhadivasesu dhamma½ desesi, vinicchaye nis²ditv± a¹¹e t²resi. Tasmi½ dharam±ne k³µa¹¹ak±rak± n±ma n±hesu½. Aparabh±ge r±j± k±lamak±si. Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± sacc±ni pak±setv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi, saccapariyos±ne so maraºabh²ruko bhikkhu sot±pattiphale patiµµhahi.
Tad± r±j± ±nando ahosi, c³¼atuº¹ilo maraºabh²ruko bhikkhu, paris± buddhaparis±, mah±tuº¹ilo pana ahameva ahosinti.
