Ahameva d³siy± bh³nahat±ti ida½ satth± ve¼uvane viharanto devadattassa vadh±ya parisakkana½ ±rabbha kathesi. Aññesu j±takesu devadatto bodhisattassa t±samattampi k±tu½ n±sakkhi, imasmi½ pana c³¼adhammap±laj±take bodhisattassa sattam±sikak±le hatthap±de ca s²sañca ched±petv± asim±laka½ n±ma k±resi. Daddaraj±take (j±. 1.2.43-44) g²va½ gahetv± m±retv± uddhane ma½sa½ pacitv± kh±di. Khant²v±d²j±take (j±. 1.4.49 ±dayo) dv²hipi kas±hi pah±rasahassehi t±¼±petv± hatthap±de ca kaººan±sañca ched±petv± jaµ±su gahetv± ka¹¹h±petv± utt±naka½ nipajj±petv± ure p±dena paharitv± gato. Bodhisatto ta½ divasa½yeva j²vitakkhaya½ p±puºi. C³¼anandiyaj±takepi (j±. 1.2.143-144) mah±kapij±takepi (j±. 1.7.83 ±dayo) m±resiyeva. Evameva so d²gharatta½ vadh±ya parisakkanto buddhak±lepi parisakkiyeva. Athekadivasa½ bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½– “±vuso, devadatto buddh±na½ m±raºatthameva up±ya½ karoti, ‘samm±sambuddha½ m±r±pess±m²’ti dhanuggahe payojesi, sila½ pavijjhi, n±¼±giri½ vissajj±pes²”ti. Satth± ±gantv± ‘k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepesa mayha½ vadh±ya parisakkiyeva, id±ni pana t±samattampi k±tu½ na sakkoti pubbe ma½ c³¼adhammap±lakum±rak±le attano putta½ sam±na½ j²vatakkhaya½ p±petv± asim±laka½ k±res²”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ mah±pat±pe n±ma rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto tassa aggamahesiy± cand±deviy± kucchimhi nibbatti, “dhammap±lo”tissa n±ma½ kari½su. Tamena½ sattam±sikak±le m±t± gandhodakena nh±petv± alaªkaritv± k²¼±payam±n± nis²di. R±j± tass± vasanaµµh±na½ agam±si. S± putta½ k²¼±payam±n± puttasinehena samappit± hutv± r±j±na½ passitv±pi na uµµhahi. So cintesi “aya½ id±neva t±va putta½ niss±ya m±na½ karoti, ma½ kismiñci na maññati, putte pana va¹¹hante mayi ‘manusso’tipi sañña½ na karissati, id±neva na½ gh±tess±m²”ti. So nivattitv± r±j±sane nis²ditv± “attano vidh±nena ±gacchat³”ti coragh±taka½ pakkos±pesi. So k±s±yavatthanivattho rattam±l±dharo pharasu½ a½se µhapetv± upadh±naghaµika½ hatthap±daµhapanadaº¹akañca ±d±ya ±gantv± r±j±na½ vanditv± “ki½ karomi, dev±”ti aµµh±si. Deviy± sirigabbha½ gantv± dhammap±la½ ±neh²ti. Dev²pi rañño kujjhitv± nivattanabh±va½ ñatv± bodhisatta½ ure nipajj±petv± rodam±n± nis²di. Coragh±tako gantv± ta½ piµµhiya½ hatthena paharitv± hatthato kum±ra½ acchinditv± ±d±ya rañño santika½ ±gantv± “ki½ karomi, dev±”ti ±ha. R±j± eka½ phalaka½ ±har±petv± purato nikkhip±petv± “idha na½ nipajj±peh²”ti ±ha. So tath± ak±si.
Cand±dev² puttassa pacchatova paridevam±n± ±gacchi. Puna coragh±tako “ki½ karom², dev±”ti ±ha. Dhammap±lassa hatthe chind±ti. Cand±dev² “mah±r±ja, mama putto sattam±siko b±lako na kiñci j±n±ti, natthetassa doso, doso pana honto mayi bhaveyya, tasm± mayha½ hatthe ched±peh²”ti imamattha½ pak±sent² paµhama½ g±tham±ha–
44. “Ahameva d³siy± bh³nahat±, rañño mah±pat±passa;
eta½ muñcatu dhammap±la½, hatthe me deva chedeh²”ti.
Tattha d³siy±ti d³sik±, tumhe disv± anuµµhaham±n± dosak±rik±ti attho. “D³sik±”tipi p±µho, ayamevattho. Bh³nahat±ti hatabh³n±, hatavu¹¹h²ti attho. Raññoti ida½ “d³siy±”ti padena yojetabba½. Aha½ rañño mah±pat±passa apar±dhak±rik±, n±ya½ kum±ro, tasm± nirapar±dha½ eta½ b±laka½ muñcatu dhammap±la½, sacepi hatthe ched±petuk±mo, dosak±rik±ya hatthe me, deva, chedeh²ti ayamettha attho.
R±j± coragh±taka½ olokesi. “Ki½ karomi, dev±”ti? “Papañca½ akatv± hatthe ched±”ti. Tasmi½ khaºe coragh±tako tikhiºapharasu½ gahetv± kum±rassa taruºava½saka¼²re viya dve hatthe chindi. So dv²su hatthesu chijjam±nesu neva rodi na paridevi, khantiñca mettañca purec±rika½ katv± adhiv±sesi. Cand± pana dev² chinnahatthakoµi½ gahetv± ucchaªge katv± lohitalitt± paridevam±n± vicari. Puna coragh±tako “ki½ karomi, dev±”ti pucchi. “Dvepi p±de chind±”ti. Ta½ sutv± cand±dev² dutiya½ g±tham±ha–

R±j±pi puna coragh±taka½ ±º±pesi. So ubhopi p±de chindi. Cand±dev² p±dakoµimpi gahetv± ucchaªge katv± lohitalitt± paridevam±n± “s±mi mah±pat±pa, chinnahatthap±d± n±ma d±rak± m±tar± posetabb± honti, aha½ bhati½ katv± mama puttaka½ posess±mi, dehi me etan”ti ±ha. Coragh±tako “ki½ deva kat± r±j±º±, niµµhita½ mama kiccan”ti pucchi. “Na t±va niµµhitan”ti. “Atha ki½ karomi, dev±”ti? “S²samassa chind±”ti. Ta½ sutv± cand±dev² tatiya½ g±tham±ha–

eta½ muñcatu dhammap±la½, s²sa½ me deva chedeh²”ti.

Vatv± ca pana attano s²sa½ upanesi.

Puna coragh±tako “ki½ karomi, dev±”ti pucchi. “S²samassa chind±”ti. So s²sa½ chinditv± “kat±, deva, r±j±º±”ti pucchi. “Na t±va kat±”ti. “Atha ki½ karomi, dev±”ti? “Asituº¹ena na½ sampaµicchitv± asim±laka½ n±ma karoh²”ti. So tassa ka¼evara½ ±k±se khipitv± asituº¹ena sampaµicchitv± asim±laka½ n±ma katv± mah±tale vippakiri. Cand±dev² bodhisattassa ma½se ucchaªge katv± mah±tale rodam±n± paridevam±n± im± g±th± abh±si–
47. “Na hi n³nimassa rañño, mitt±macc± ca vijjare suhad±;
ye na vadanti r±j±na½, m± gh±tayi orasa½ putta½.
48. “Na hi n³nimassa rañño, ñ±t² mitt± ca vijjare suhad±;
ye na vadanti r±j±na½, m± gh±tayi atraja½ puttan”ti.
Tattha mitt±macc± ca vijjare suhad±ti n³na imassa rañño da¼hamitt± v± sabbakiccesu sahabh±vino amacc± v± muduhadayat±ya suhad± v± keci na vijjanti. Ye na vadant²ti ye adhun± ±gantv± “attano piyaputta½ m± gh±tay²”ti na vadanti, ima½ r±j±na½ paµisedhenti, te natthiyev±ti maññe. Dutiyag±th±ya½ ñ±t²ti ñ±tak±.
Im± pana dve g±th± vatv± cand±dev² ubhohi hatthehi hadayama½sa½ dh±rayam±n± tatiya½ g±tham±ha–
49. “Candanas±r±nulitt±, b±h± chijjanti dhammap±lassa;
d±y±dassa pathaby±, p±º± me deva rujjhant²”ti.
Tattha d±y±dassa pathaby±ti pitusantak±ya c±turant±ya pathaviy± d±y±dassa lohitacandanas±r±nulitt± hatth± chijjanti, p±d± chijjanti, s²sañca chijjati, asim±lakopi kato, tava va½sa½ pacchinditv± gatosi d±n²ti evam±d²ni vilapanti evam±ha. P±º± me deva rujjhant²ti deva, mayhampi ima½ soka½ sandh±retu½ asakkontiy± j²vita½ rujjhat²ti.
Tass± eva½ paridevam±n±ya eva ¹ayham±ne ve¼uvane ve¼u viya hadaya½ phali, s± tattheva j²vitakkhaya½ patt±. R±j±pi pallaªke µh±tu½ asakkonto mah±tale pati, padaratala½ dvidh± bhijji, so tatopi bh³miya½ pati. Tato catunahut±dhikadviyojanasatasahassabahal±pi ghanapathav² tassa aguºa½ dh±retu½ asakkont² bhijjitv± vivaramad±si, av²cito j±l± uµµh±ya kuladattikena kambalena parikkhipant² viya ta½ gahetv± av²cimhi khipi. Cand±ya ca bodhisattassa ca amacc± sar²rakicca½ kari½su.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± r±j± devadatto ahosi, cand±dev² mah±paj±patigotam², dhammap±lakum±ro pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
