Vand±mi ta½ kuñjara saµµhih±yananti ida½ satth± ve¼uvane viharanto devadatta½ ±rabbha kathesi. Ekasmiñhi divase bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “±vuso, devadatto kakkha¼o pharuso s±hasiko, sattesu karuº±mattampissa natth²”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepesa nikkaruºoyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto hatthiyoniya½ nibbattitv± vayappatto p±s±diko mah±k±yo as²tisahassav±raºapariv±ro y³thapati hutv± himavantapadese vih±si. Tattha vadhiss±mi teti tva½ kasm± mama vicaraºamagge puttak±ni µhapesi, yasm± µhapesi, tasm± vadhiss±mi te puttak±n²ti vadati. Ki½ me tuva½ k±has²ti mayha½ mah±th±massa tva½ dubbal± ki½ karissasi. Papothayeyyanti aha½ t±dis±na½ laµukik±na½ satasahassampi v±mena p±dena sañcuººeyya½, dakkhiºap±dena pana kath±va natth²ti.
Evañca pana vatv± so tass± puttake p±dena sañcuººetv± muttena pav±hetv± nadantova pakk±mi. Laµukik± rukkhas±kh±ya nil²yitv± “id±ni t±va v±raºa nadanto gacchasi, katip±heneva me kiriya½ passissasi, k±yabalato ñ±ºabalassa mahantabh±va½ na j±n±si, hotu, j±n±pess±mi nan”ti ta½ santajjayam±n±va catuttha½ g±tham±ha–
42. “Na heva sabbattha balena kicca½, balañhi b±lassa vadh±ya hoti;

S± eva½ vatv± katip±ha½ eka½ k±ka½ upaµµhahitv± tena tuµµhena “ki½ te karom²”ti vutt± “s±mi, añña½ me k±tabba½ natthi, ekassa pana ekac±rikav±raºassa tuº¹ena paharitv± tumhehi akkh²ni bhinn±ni pacc±s²s±m²”ti ±ha. S± tena “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchit± eka½ n²lamakkhika½ upaµµhahi. T±yapi “ki½ te, karom²”ti vutt± “imin± k±kena ekac±rikav±raºassa akkh²su bhinnesu tumhehi tattha ±s±µika½ p±tetu½ icch±m²”ti vatv± t±yapi “s±dh³”ti vutte eka½ maº¹³ka½ upaµµhahitv± tena “ki½ te, karom²”ti vutt± “yad± ekac±rikav±raºo andho hutv± p±n²ya½ pariyesati, tad± pabbatamatthake µhito sadda½ katv± tasmi½ pabbatamatthaka½ abhiruhante otaritv± pap±te sadda½ kareyy±tha, aha½ tumh±ka½ santik± ettaka½ pacc±s²s±m²”ti ±ha. Athekadivasa½ k±ko v±raºassa dvepi akkh²ni tuº¹ena bhindi, n²lamakkhik± ±s±µika½ p±tesi. So pu¼avehi khajjanto vedan±ppatto pip±s±bhibh³to p±n²ya½ pariyesam±no vicari. Tasmi½ k±le maº¹³ko pabbatamatthake µhatv± saddamak±si. V±raºo “ettha p±n²ya½ bhavissat²”ti pabbatamatthaka½ abhiruhi. Atha maº¹³ko otaritv± pap±te µhatv± saddamak±si. 43. “K±kañca passa laµukika½, maº¹³ka½ n²lamakkhika½;
ete n±ga½ agh±tesu½, passa verassa verina½;
tasm± hi vera½ na kayir±tha, appiyenapi kenac²”ti.–

Tattha pass±ti aniy±mit±lapanameta½, bhikkh³ pana sandh±ya vuttatt± passatha bhikkhaveti vutta½ hoti. Eteti ete catt±ro ekato hutv±. Agh±tesunti ta½ vadhi½su. Passa verassa verinanti passatha verik±na½ verassa gatinti attho.
Tad± ekac±rikahatth² devadatto ahosi, y³thapati pana ahameva ahosinti.
