Atha bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “±vuso, devadatto mus±v±da½ katv± saªgha½ bhinditv± id±ni gil±no hutv± mah±dukkha½ anubhot²”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepesa mus±v±d²yeva, na cesa id±neva mus±v±da½ katv± mah±dukkha½ anubhoti, pubbepi anubhosiyev±”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto t±vati½sabhavane aññataro devaputto ahosi. Tena kho pana samayena b±r±ºasiya½ mah±-ussavo ahosi. Bah³ n±g± ca supaºº± ca bh³maµµhak± ca dev± ±gantv± ussava½ olokayi½su. T±vati½sabhavanatopi catt±ro devaputt± kakk±r³ni n±ma dibbapupph±ni tehi katacumbaµaka½ pi¼andhitv± ussavadassana½ ±gami½su. Dv±dasayojanika½ b±r±ºasinagara½ tesa½ pupph±na½ gandhena ekagandha½ ahosi. Manuss± “im±ni pupph±ni kena pi¼andhit±n²”ti upadh±rent± vicaranti. Te devaputt± “amhe ete upadh±rent²”ti ñatv± r±jaªgaºe uppatitv± mahantena dev±nubh±vena ±k±se aµµha½su. Mah±jano sannipati, r±j±pi saddhi½ upar±j±d²hi agam±si. Atha ne “kataradevalokato, s±mi, ±gacchath±”ti pucchi½su. “T±vati½sadevalokato ±gacch±m±”ti. “Kena kammena ±gatatth±”ti. “Ussavadassanatth±y±”ti. “Ki½pupph±ni n±met±n²”ti? “Dibbakakk±rupupph±ni n±m±”ti. “S±mi, tumhe devaloke aññ±ni pi¼andheyy±tha, im±ni amh±ka½ deth±”ti. Desan±s²sameveta½ k±yadv±ravac²dv±ramanodv±rehi pana yo dasapi akusalakammapathe na karot²ti ayamettha adhipp±yo. Yaso laddh±ti issariyañca labhitv± yo issariyamadamatto sati½ vissajjetv± p±pakamma½ na karoti, sa ve evar³po imehi guºehi yutto puggalo ima½ dibbapuppha½ arahati. Tasm± yo imehi guºehi samann±gato, so im±ni pupph±ni y±citu½ arahati, tassa dass±m²ti.
Ta½ sutv± purohito cintesi “mayha½ imesu guºesu ekopi natthi, mus±v±da½ pana vatv± et±ni pupph±ni gahetv± pi¼andhiss±mi, eva½ ma½ mah±jano ‘guºasampanno ayan’ti j±nissat²”ti. Saddh± ca avir±gin²ti kamma½ v± vip±ka½ v± okappan²yassa v± puggalassa vacana½ saddahitv± appamattakeneva na virajjati na bhijjati. Yo y±cake v± aññe v± sa½vibh±g±rahe puggale bahi katv± ekakova s±durasabhojana½ na bhuñjati, nesa½ sa½vibhajitv± bhuñjati, so im±ni pupph±ni arahat²ti.

Tesa½ gatak±le purohitassa s²se mahat² vedan± uppajji, tikhiºasikharena nimmathita½ viya ca ayapaµµena p²¼ita½ viya ca s²sa½ ahosi. So vedan±ppatto apar±para½ parivattam±no mah±saddena viravi, “kimetan”ti ca vutte “aha½ mamabbhantare avijjam±neyeva guºe ‘atth²’ti mus±v±da½ katv± te devaputte im±ni pupph±ni y±ci½, harathet±ni mama s²sato”ti ±ha. T±ni harant±pi haritu½ n±sakkhi½su, ayapaµµena baddh±ni viya ahesu½. Atha na½ ukkhipitv± geha½ nayi½su. Tattha tassa viravantassa satta divas± v²tivatt±.
R±j± amacce ±mantetv± “duss²labr±hmaºo marissati, ki½ karom±”ti ±ha. “Deva, puna ussava½ k±rema, devaputt± puna ±gacchissant²”ti. R±j± puna ussava½ k±resi. Devaputt± puna ±gantv± sakalanagara½ pupphagandhena ekagandha½ katv± tatheva r±jaªgaºe aµµha½su, mah±jano sannipatitv± duss²labr±hmaºa½ ±netv± tesa½ purato utt±na½ nipajj±pesi. So “j²vita½ me detha, s±m²”ti devaputte y±ci. Devaputt± “tuyha½ duss²lassa p±padhammassa ananucchavik±nevet±ni pupph±ni, tva½ pana ‘amhe vañcess±m²’ti saññ² ahosi, attano mus±v±daphala½ laddhan”ti mah±janamajjhe duss²labr±hmaºa½ garahitv± s²sato pupphacumbaµaka½ apanetv± mah±janassa ov±da½ datv± sakaµµh±nameva agama½su.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± br±hmaºo devadatto ahosi, tesu devaputtesu eko kassapo, eko moggall±no, eko s±riputto, jeµµhakadevaputto pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
