Duddubh±yati bhaddanteti ida½ satth± jetavane viharanto aññatitthiye ±rabbha kathesi. Titthiy± kira jetavanassa sam²pe tasmi½ tasmi½ µh±ne kaºµak±passaye seyya½ kappenti, pañc±tapa½ tapenti, n±nappak±ra½ micch±tapa½ caranti. Atha sambahul± bhikkh³ s±vatthiya½ piº¹±ya caritv± jetavana½ ±gacchant± antar±magge te disv± gantv± satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± “atthi nu kho, bhante, aññatitthiy±na½ vatasam±d±ne s±ro”ti pucchi½su. Satth± “na, bhikkhave, tesa½ vatasam±d±ne s±ro v± viseso v± atthi, tañhi nigha½siyam±na½ upaparikkhiyam±na½ ukk±rabh³mimaggasadisa½ sasakassa duddubhasadisa½ hot²”ti vatv± “duddubhasadisabh±vamassa maya½ na j±n±ma, kathetha no, bhante”ti tehi y±cito at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente bodhisatto s²hayoniya½ nibbattitv± vayappatto araññe paµivasati. Tad± pana pacchimasamuddasam²pe beluvamissakat±lavana½ hoti. Tatreko sasako beluvarukkham³le ekassa t±lagacchassa heµµh± vasati. So ekadivasa½ gocara½ ±d±ya ±gantv± t±lapaººassa heµµh± nipanno cintesi “sace aya½ pathav² sa½vaµµeyya, kaha½ nu kho gamiss±m²”ti. Tasmi½ khaºe eka½ beluvapakka½ t±lapaººassa upari pati. So tassa saddena “addh± pathav² sa½vaµµat²”ti uppatitv± pacchato anolokentova pal±yi. Ta½ maraºabhayabh²ta½ vegena pal±yanta½ añño sasako disv± pucchi “ki½ bho, ativiya bh²to pal±yas²”ti. “M± pucchi, bho”ti. So “ki½ bho, ki½ bho”ti pacchato dh±vateva. Itaro nivattitv± anolokentova “ettha pathav² sa½vaµµat²”ti ±ha. Sopi tassa pacchato pal±yi. Eva½ tamañño addasa, tamaññoti eva½ sasakasahassa½ ekato hutv± pal±yi. Te ekopi migo disv± ekato hutv± pal±yi. Eko s³karo, eko gokaººo, eko mahi½so, eko gavayo, eko khaggo, eko byaggho, eko s²ho, eko hatth² disv± “kimetan”ti pucchitv± “ettha pathav² sa½vaµµat²”ti vutte pal±yi. Tad± bodhisatto ta½ bala½ pal±yanta½ disv± “kimetan”ti pucchitv± “ettha pathav² sa½vaµµat²”ti sutv± cintesi “pathav²sa½vaµµana½ n±ma na kad±ci atthi, addh± etesa½ kiñci dussuta½ bhavissati, mayi kho pana ussukka½ an±pajjante sabbe nassissanti, j²vita½ nesa½ dass±m²”ti s²havegena purato pabbatap±da½ gantv± tikkhattu½ s²han±da½ nadi. Te s²habhayatajjit± nivattitv± piº¹it± aµµha½su. S²ho tesa½ antara½ pavisitv± “kimattha½ pal±yath±”ti pucchi. “Pathav² sa½vaµµat²”ti. “Kena sa½vaµµam±n± diµµh±”ti? “Hatth² j±nant²”ti. Hatth² pucchi. Te “maya½ na j±n±ma, s²h± j±nant²”ti vadi½su, s²h±pi “maya½ na j±n±ma, byaggh± j±nant²”ti, byaggh±pi “maya½ na j±n±ma, khagg± j±nant²”ti, khagg±pi “gavay± j±nant²”ti, gavay±pi “mahi½s± j±nant²”ti, mahi½s±pi “gokaºº± j±nant²”ti, gokaºº±pi “s³kar± j±nant²”ti, s³kar±pi “mig± j±nant²”ti, mig±pi “maya½ na j±n±ma, sasak± j±nant²”ti, sasakesu pucchiyam±nesu “aya½ kathet²”ti ta½ sasaka½ dassesu½. Atha na½ “eva½ kira, samma, passasi pathav² sa½vaµµat²”ti pucchi. “¾ma, s±mi may± diµµh±”ti. “Kattha vasanto passas²”ti? “Pacchimasamuddasam²pe beluvamissakat±lavane vas±mi. Ahañhi tattha beluvarukkham³le t±lagacche t±lapaººassa heµµh± nipanno cintesi½ “sace pathav² sa½vaµµati, kaha½ gamiss±m²”ti, atha taªkhaºaññeva pathaviy± sa½vaµµanasadda½ sutv± pal±tomh²”ti.
S²ho cintesi “addh± tassa t±lapaººassa upari beluvapakka½ patitv± duddubh±yanasaddamak±si, sv±ya½ ta½ sadda½ sutv± ‘pathav² sa½vaµµat²’ti sañña½ upp±detv± pal±yi, tathato j±niss±m²”ti. So ta½ sasaka½ gahetv± mah±jana½ ass±setv± “aha½ imin± diµµhaµµh±ne pathaviy± sa½vaµµanabh±va½ v± asa½vaµµanabh±va½ v± tathato j±nitv± ±gamiss±mi, y±va mam±gaman± tumhe ettheva hoth±”ti sasaka½ piµµhiya½ ±ropetv± s²havegena pakkhanditv± t±lavane sasaka½ ot±retv± “ehi tay± diµµhaµµh±na½ dasseh²”ti ±ha. “Na visah±mi s±m²”ti. “Ehi m± bh±y²”ti. So beluvarukkha½ upasaªkamitu½ asakkonto avid³re µhatv± “ida½ s±mi duddubh±yanaµµh±nan”ti vatv± paµhama½ g±tham±ha–

ahampeta½ na j±n±mi, kimeta½ duddubh±yat²”ti.
Tattha duddubh±yat²ti duddubhasadda½ karoti. Bhaddanteti bhadda½ tava atthu. Kimetanti yasmi½ padese aha½ vas±mi, tattha duddubh±yati, ahampi na j±n±mi “ki½ v± eta½ duddubh±yati, kena v± k±raºena duddubh±yati, kevala½ duddubh±yanasadda½ assosin”ti.
Eva½ vutte s²ho beluvarukkham³la½ gantv± t±lapaººassa heµµh± sasakena nipannaµµh±nañceva t±lapaººamatthake patita½ beluvapakkañca disv± pathaviy± asa½vaµµanabh±va½ tathato j±nitv± sasaka½ piµµhiya½ ±ropetv± s²havegena khippa½ migasaªgh±na½ santika½ gantv± sabba½ pavatti½ ±rocetv± “tumhe m± bh±yath±”ti migagaºa½ ass±setv± vissajjesi. Sace hi tad± bodhisatto na bhaveyya, sabbe samudda½ pavisitv± nasseyyu½. Bodhisatta½ pana niss±ya sabbe j²vita½ labhi½s³ti.
86. “Beluva½ patita½ sutv±, duddubhanti saso javi;
sasassa vacana½ sutv±, santatt± migav±hin².
87. “Appatv± padaviññ±ºa½, paraghos±nus±rino;
pan±daparam± b±l±, te honti parapattiy±.
88. “Ye ca s²lena sampann±, paññ±y³pasame rat±;
±rak± virat± dh²r±, na honti parapattiy±”ti.–

Tattha beluvanti beluvapakka½. Duddubhant²ti eva½ sadda½ kurum±na½. Santatt±ti utrast±. Migav±hin²ti anekasahassasaªkh± migasen±. Padaviññ±ºanti viññ±ºapada½ sotaviññ±ºakoµµh±sa½ ap±puºitv±ti attho. Te honti parapattiy±ti te paraghos±nus±rino tameva paraghosasaªkh±ta½ pan±da½ “paraman”ti maññam±n± b±l± andhaputhujjan± viññ±ºapadassa appattat±ya parapattiy±va honti, paresa½ vacana½ saddahitv± ya½ v± ta½ v± karonti.
S²len±ti ariyamaggena ±gatas²lena samann±gat±. Paññ±y³pasame rat±ti maggeneva ±gatapaññ±ya kiles³pasame rat±, yath± v± s²lena, eva½ paññ±yapi sampann±, kiles³pasame rat±tipi attho. ¾rak± virat± dh²r±ti p±pakiriyato ±rak± virat± paº¹it±. Na hont²ti te evar³p± sot±pann± p±pato oratabh±vena kiles³pasame abhiratabh±vena ca ekav±ra½ maggañ±ºena paµividdhadhamm± aññesa½ kathent±nampi na saddahanti na gaºhanti. Kasm±? Attano paccakkhatt±ti. Tena vutta½–
“Assaddho akataññ³ ca, sandhicchedo ca yo naro;
