Yo te puttaketi ida½ satth± gijjhak³µe viharanto devadattassa vadh±ya parisakkana½ ±rabbha kathesi. Tasmiñhi samaye dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “aho ±vuso devadatto nillajjo anariyo eva½ uttamaguºadharassa samm±sambuddhassa aj±tasattun± saddhi½ ekato hutv± dhanuggahapayojanasil±pavijjhanan±¼±girivissajjanehi vadh±ya up±ya½ karot²”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi devadatto mayha½ vadh±ya parisakki, id±ni pana me t±samattampi k±tu½ n±sakkh²”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente eko dis±p±mokkho ±cariyo pañcasat±na½ m±ºavak±na½ sippa½ v±cento ekadivasa½ cintesi “mayha½ idha vasantassa palibodho hoti, m±ºavak±nampi sippa½ na niµµh±ti, himavantapadese araññ±yatana½ pavisitv± tattha vasanto v±cess±m²”ti. So m±ºavak±na½ kathetv± tilataº¹ulatelavatth±d²ni g±h±petv± arañña½ pavisitv± maggato avid³re µh±ne paººas±la½ k±retv± niv±sa½ kappesi, m±ºav±pi attano paººas±la½ kari½su. M±ºavak±na½ ñ±tak± telataº¹ul±d²ni pesenti. Raµµhav±sinopi “dis±p±mokkho ±cariyo kira araññe asukaµµh±ne n±ma vasanto sippa½ uggaºh±pet²”ti tassa taº¹ul±d²ni abhiharanti, kant±rappaµipann±pi denti, aññataropi puriso kh²rap±natth±ya savaccha½ dhenu½ ad±si. ¾cariyassa paººas±l±ya santike dv²hi potakehi saddhi½ ek± godh± vasati, s²habyaggh±pissa upaµµh±na½ ±gacchanti. Eko tittiropi tattha nibaddhav±so ahosi. So ±cariyassa m±ºav±na½ mante v±centassa sadda½ sutv± tayopi vede uggaºhi. M±ºav± tena saddhi½ ativiss±sik± ahesu½.
Aparabh±ge m±ºavesu nipphatti½ appattesuyeva ±cariyo k±lamak±si. M±ºav± tassa sar²ra½ jh±petv± v±luk±ya th³pa½ katv± n±n±pupphehi p³jetv± rodanti paridevanti. Atha ne tittiro “kasm± rodath±”ti ±ha. “¾cariyo no sippe aniµµhiteyeva k±lakato, tasm± rod±m±”ti. “Eva½ sante m± socittha, aha½ vo sippa½ v±cess±m²”ti. “Tva½ katha½ j±n±s²”ti? “Aha½ ±cariye tumh±ka½ v±cente sadda½ sutv± tayo vede paguºe ak±sinti. Tena hi attano paguºabh±va½ amhe j±n±peh²”ti. Tittiro “tena hi suº±th±”ti tesa½ gaºµhiµµh±nameva pabbatamatthak± nadi½ otaranto viya os±resi. M±ºav± haµµhatuµµh± hutv± tittirapaº¹itassa santike sippa½ paµµhapesu½. Sopi dis±p±mokkh±cariyassa µh±ne µhatv± tesa½ sippa½ v±cesi. M±ºav± tassa suvaººapañjara½ karitv± upari vit±na½ bandhitv± suvaººataµµake madhul±j±d²ni upaharant± n±n±vaººehi pupphehi p³jent± mahanta½ sakk±ra½ kari½su. “Tittiro kira araññ±yatane pañcasate m±ºavake manta½ v±cet²”ti sakalajambud²pe p±kaµo ahosi.

M±ºav± tittirassa ±rocetv± tittirapaº¹ita½ sabbañca assamapada½ godha½ paµicch±petv± attano attano nagarameva agami½su. Tad± eko nikk±ruºiko duµµhat±paso tattha tattha vicaranto ta½ µh±na½ samp±puºi. Godh± ta½ disv± paµisanth±ra½ katv± “asukaµµh±ne taº¹ul±, asukaµµh±ne tel±d²ni atthi, bhatta½ pacitv± bhuñj±h²”ti vatv± gocaratth±ya gat±. Tattha dinnabhattoti bhatta½ pacitv± bhuñj±h²ti tay± dinnabhatto. Ad³saketi niddose nirapar±dhe. Tasmi½ d±µha½ nip±teh²ti tasmi½ p±papurise catassopi d±µh± nip±teh²ti adhipp±yo. M± te muccittha j²vatoti j²vanto saj²vo hutv± tava hatthato eso p±padhammo m± muccittha, mokkha½ m± labhatu, j²vitakkhaya½ p±peh²ti attho.

Tattha ±kiººaluddoti g±¼haluddo. Vivaradassinoti chidda½ ot±ra½ pariyesantassa. Neva na½ abhir±dhayeti evar³pa½ puggala½ sakalapathavi½ dentopi tosetu½ na sakkuºeyya, kimaªga½ pan±ha½ bhattamattad±yik±ti dasseti.
Godh± eva½ vatv± “aya½ pabujjhitv± mampi kh±deyy±”ti attano j²vita½ rakkham±n± pal±yi. Tepi pana s²habyaggh± tittirassa sah±yak±va, kad±ci te ±gantv± tittira½ passanti, kad±ci so gantv± tesa½ dhamma½ desetv± ±gacchati, tasmi½ pana divase s²ho byaggha½ ±ha– “samma, cira½ diµµho no tittiro, ajja sattaµµhadivas± honti, gaccha, t±vassa pavatti½ ñatv± eh²”ti. Byaggho “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± godh±ya pal±yanak±le ta½ µh±na½ patv± ta½ p±papurisa½ nidd±yanta½ passi. Tassa jaµantare tittirapaº¹itassa lom±ni paññ±yanti, dhenuy± ca vacchakassa ca aµµh²ni paññ±yanti. Byagghar±j± ta½ sabba½ disv± suvaººapañjare ca tittirapaº¹ita½ adisv± “imin± p±papurisena ete m±rit± bhavissant²”ti ta½ p±dena paharitv± uµµh±pesi. Sopi ta½ disv± bh²tatasito ahosi. Atha na½ byaggho “tva½ ete m±retv± kh±das²”ti pucchi. “Neva m±remi, na kh±d±m²”ti. “P±padhamma tayi am±rente añño ko m±ressati, kathehi t±va k±raºa½, akathentassa j²vita½ te natth²”ti. So maraºabhayabh²to “±ma, s±mi, godh±puttake ca vacchakañca dhenuñca m±retv± kh±d±mi, tittira½ pana na m±rem²”ti-±ha. So tassa bahu½ kathentassapi asaddahitv± “tva½ kuto ±gatos²”ti pucchitv± “s±mi, kaliªgaraµµhato v±ºijak±na½ bhaº¹a½ vahanto j²vikahetu idañcidañca kamma½ katv± id±nimhi idh±gato”ti tena sabbasmi½ attan± katakamme kathite “p±padhamma tayi tittira½ am±rente añño ko m±ressati, ehi s²hassa migarañño santika½ ta½ ness±m²”ti ta½ purato katv± t±sento agam±si. 108. “Ki½ nu sub±hu taram±nar³po, pacc±gatosi saha m±ºavena;
ki½ kiccamattha½ idhamatthi tuyha½, akkh±hi me pucchito etamatthan”ti.
Tattha sub±h³ti byaggha½ n±men±lapati. Byagghassa hi purimak±yo man±po hoti, tena ta½ evam±ha. Ki½ kiccamattha½ idhamatthi tuyhanti ki½ karaº²ya½ atthasaññita½ imin± m±ºavena idha atthi. “Tuyha½ ki½ kiccamatthan”tipi p±µho, ayamevattho.

109. “Yo te sakh± daddaro s±dhur³po, tassa vadha½ parisaªk±mi ajja;
purisassa kamm±yatan±ni sutv±, n±ha½ sukhi½ daddara½ ajja maññe”ti.
Tattha daddaroti tittiro. Tassa vadhanti tassa tittirapaº¹itassa imamh± purisamh± ajja vadha½ parisaªk±mi. N±ha½ sukhinti aha½ ajja daddara½ sukhi½ aroga½ na maññ±mi.
Atha na½ s²ho chaµµha½ g±tham±ha–
110. “K±nissa kamm±yatan±ni assu, purisassa vuttisamodh±nat±ya;
ka½ v± paµiñña½ purisassa sutv±, parisaªkasi daddara½ m±ºaven±”ti.
Tattha ass³ti assosi. Vuttisamodh±nat±y±ti j²vitavuttisamodh±nat±ya, k±ni n±ma imin± attano kamm±ni tuyha½ kathit±n²ti attho. M±ºaven±ti ki½ sutv± imin± m±ºavena m±rita½ parisaªkasi.

abb±hita½ pubbaka½ a¹¹haratta½, hatth± da¹¹h± piº¹apaµiggahena.
113. “T±nissa kamm±yatan±ni assu, purisassa vuttisamodh±nat±ya;
yath± aya½ dissati lomapiº¹o, g±vo hat± ki½ pana daddarass±”ti.
Tattha ciºº± kaliªg±ti v±ºijak±na½ bhaº¹a½ vahantena kira tena kaliªgaraµµhe ciºº±. Carit± vaºijj±ti vaºijj±pi tena kat±. Vett±caroti vettehi sañcaritabbo. Saªkupathopi ciººoti kh±ºukamaggopi valañjito. Naµeh²ti j²vikahetuyeva naµehipi saddhi½. Ciººa½ saha v±kureh²ti v±kura½ vahantena v±kurehi saddhi½ carita½. Daº¹ena yuddhanti daº¹ena yuddhampi kira tena yujjhita½.
Baddh± kul²k±ti sakuºik±pi kira tena baddh±. Mitam±¼aken±ti dhaññam±pakakammampi kira tena kata½. Akkh± jit±ti akkhadhutt±na½ veyy±vacca½ karontena akkh± haµ±. Sa½yamo abbhat²toti j²vitavutti½ niss±ya pabbajanteneva s²lasa½yamo atikkanto. Abb±hitanti apaggharaºa½ kata½. Pubbakanti lohita½. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– imin± kira j²vika½ niss±ya r±j±par±dhik±na½ hatthap±de chinditv± te ±netv± s±l±ya nipajj±petv± vaºamukhehi paggharanta½ lohita½ a¹¹harattasamaye tattha gantv± kuº¹akadh³ma½ datv± µhapitanti. Hatth± da¹¹h±ti ±j²vikapabbajja½ pabbajitak±le uºhapiº¹ap±tapaµiggahaºe hatth±pi kirassa da¹¹h±.
T±nissa kamm±yatan±n²ti t±ni assa kamm±ni. Ass³ti assosi½. Yath± ayanti yath± esa etassa jaµantare tittiralomapiº¹opi dissati, imin± k±raºena veditabbameta½ “eteneva so m±rito”ti. G±vo hat± ki½ pana daddarass±ti g±vopi etena hat±, daddarassa pana ki½ na hanitabba½, kasm± esa ta½ na m±ressat²ti.
S²ho ta½ purisa½ pucchi “m±rito te tittirapaº¹ito”ti? “¾ma, s±m²”ti. Athassa saccavacana½ sutv± s²ho ta½ vissajjetuk±mo ahosi. Byagghar±j± pana “m±retabbayuttako eso”ti vatv± tattheva na½ d±µh±hi paharitv± m±retv± ±v±µa½ khaºitv± pakkhipi. M±ºav± ±gantv± tittirapaº¹ika½ adisv± roditv± paridevitv± nivatti½su.
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± “eva½, bhikkhave, devadatto pubbepi mayha½ vadh±ya parisakk²”ti vatv± j±taka½ samodh±nesi– “tad± k³µajaµilo devadatto ahosi, godh± uppalavaºº±, byaggho moggall±no, s²ho s±riputto, dis±p±mokkho ±cariyo mah±kassapo, tittirapaº¹ito pana ahameva ahosin”ti.
