Ekadivasañhi satth± uposathike up±sake ±mantetv± “up±sak± s±dhur³pa½ vo kata½ uposatha½ upavasantehi, d±na½ d±tabba½, s²la½ rakkhitabba½, kodho na k±tabbo, mett± bh±vetabb±, uposathav±so vasitabbo, por±ºakapaº¹it± hi eka½ upa¹¹huposathakamma½ niss±ya mah±yasa½ labhi½s³”ti vatv± tehi y±cito at²ta½ ±hari.
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente tasmi½ nagare sucipariv±ro n±ma seµµhi ahosi as²tikoµidhanavibhavo d±n±dipuññ±bhirato. Tassa puttad±r±pi parijanopi antamaso tasmi½ ghare vacchap±lak±pi sabbe m±sassa cha divase uposatha½ upavasanti. Tad± bodhisatto ekasmi½ daliddakule nibbattitv± bhati½ katv± kicchena j²vati. So “bhati½ kariss±m²”ti tassa geha½ gantv± vanditv± ekamanta½ µhito “ki½ ±gatos²”ti vutte “tumh±ka½ gehe bhatiy± kammakaraºatthan”ti ±ha. Seµµhi aññesa½ bhatik±na½ ±gatadivaseyeva “imasmi½ gehe kamma½ karont± s²la½ rakkhanti, s²la½ rakkhitu½ sakkont± kamma½ karoth±”ti vadati, bodhisattassa pana s²larakkhaºa-±cikkhaºe sañña½ akatv± “s±dhu t±ta, attano bhati½ j±nitv± kamma½ karoh²”ti ±ha. So tato paµµh±ya suvaco hutv± ura½ datv± attano kilamatha½ agaºetv± tassa sabbakicc±ni karoti, p±tova kammanta½ gantv± s±ya½ ±gacchati.
Athekadivasa½ nagare chaºa½ ghosesu½. Mah±seµµhi d±si½ ±mantetv± “ajjuposathadivaso, gehe kammakar±na½ p±tova bhatta½ pacitv± dehi, k±lasseva bhuñjitv± uposathik± bhavissant²”ti ±ha. Bodhisatto k±lasseva uµµh±ya kammanta½ agam±si, “ajjuposathiko bhaveyy±s²”ti tassa koci n±rocesi. Sesakammakar± p±tova bhuñjitv± uposathik±va ahesu½. Seµµhipi saputtad±ro saparijano uposatha½ adhiµµhahi, sabbepi uposathik± attano attano vasanaµµh±na½ gantv± s²la½ ±vajjent± nis²di½su. Bodhisatto sakaladivasa½ kamma½ katv± s³riyatthaªgamanavel±ya ±gato. Athassa bhattak±rik± hatthadhovana½ datv± p±tiya½ bhatta½ va¹¹hetv± upan±mesi. Bodhisatto “aññesu divasesu im±ya vel±ya mah±saddo hoti, ajja kaha½ gat±”ti pucchi. “Sabbe uposatha½ sam±diyitv± attano attano vasanaµµh±n±ni gat±”ti. Ta½ sutv± bodhisatto cintesi “ettak±na½ s²lavant±na½ antare aha½ eko duss²lo hutv± na vasiss±mi, id±ni uposathaªgesu adhiµµhitesu hoti nu kho uposathakamma½, no”ti. So gantv± seµµhi½ pucchi. Atha na½ seµµhi “t±ta p±tova anadhiµµhitatt± sakala½ uposathakamma½ na hoti, upa¹¹huposathakamma½ pana hot²”ti ±ha.
So “ettakampi hot³”ti seµµhissa santike sam±dinnas²lo hutv± uposathakamma½ adhiµµh±ya attano vasanok±sa½ pavisitv± s²la½ ±vajjento nipajji. Athassa sakaladivasa½ nir±h±rat±ya pacchimay±masamanantare satthakav±t± samuµµhahi½su. Seµµhin± n±n±vidh±ni bhesajj±ni ±haritv± “bhuñj±”ti vuccam±nopi “uposatha½ na bhindiss±mi, j²vitapariyantika½ katv± sam±diyin”ti ±ha. Balavavedan± uppajji, aruºuggamanavel±ya sati½ paccupaµµh±petu½ n±sakkhi. Atha na½ “id±ni marissat²”ti n²haritv± “os±rake nipajj±pesu½. Tasmi½ khaºe b±r±ºasir±j± rathavaragato mahantena pariv±rena nagara½ padakkhiºa½ karonto ta½ µh±na½ samp±puºi. Bodhisatto tassa siri½ oloketv± tasmi½ lobha½ upp±detv± rajja½ patthesi. So cavitv± upa¹¹huposathakammanissandena tassa aggamahesiy± kucchimhi paµisandhi½ gaºhi. S± laddhagabbhaparih±r± dasam±saccayena putta½ vij±yi, “udayakum±ro”tissa n±ma½ aka½su. So vayappatto sabbasippesu nipphatti½ p±puºi, j±tissarañ±ºena attano pubbakamma½ saritv± “appakassa kammassa phala½ mama idan”ti abhikkhaºa½ ud±na½ ud±nesi. So pitu accayena rajja½ patv±pi attano mahanta½ sirivibhava½ oloketv± tadeva ud±na½ ud±nesi.
Athekadivasa½ nagare chaºa½ sajjayi½su, mah±jano k²¼±pasuto ahosi. Tad± b±r±ºasiy± uttaradv±rav±s² eko bhatiko udakabhati½ katv± laddha½ a¹¹ham±saka½ p±k±riµµhak±ya antare µhapetv± bhati½ karonto dakkhiºadv±ra½ patv± tattha udakabhatimeva katv± j²vam±n±ya ek±ya kapaºitthiy± saddhi½ sa½v±sa½ kappesi. S± ta½ ±ha– “s±mi, nagare chaºo vattati, sace te kiñci atthi, mayampi k²¼eyy±m±”ti? “¾ma, atth²”ti. “Kittaka½, s±m²”ti? “A¹¹ham±sako”ti. “Kaha½ so”ti? “Uttaradv±re iµµhakabbhantare µhapitoti ito me dv±dasayojanantare nidh±na½, tava pana hatthe kiñci atth²”ti? “¾ma, atth²”ti. “Kittakan”ti? “A¹¹ham±sakov±”ti. “Iti tava a¹¹ham±sako, mama a¹¹ham±sakoti m±sakova hoti, tato ekena koµµh±sena m±la½, ekena koµµh±sena gandha½, ekena koµµh±sena sura½ gahetv± k²¼iss±ma, gaccha tay± µhapita½ a¹¹ham±saka½ ±har±”ti. So “bhariy±ya me santik± kath± laddh±”ti haµµhatuµµho “bhadde, m± cintayi, ±hariss±mi nan”ti vatv± pakk±mi. N±gabalo bhatiko cha yojan±ni atikkamma majjhanhikasamaye v²taccikaªg±rasanthata½ viya uºha½ v±luka½ maddanto dhanalobhena haµµhapahaµµho kas±varattaniv±sano kaººe t±lapaººa½ pi¼andhitv± ekena ±yogavattena g²ta½ g±yanto r±jaªgaºena p±y±si.
Udayar±j± s²hapañjara½ vivaritv± µhito ta½ tath± gacchanta½ disv± “ki½ nu kho esa evar³pa½ v±t±tapa½ agaºetv± haµµhatuµµho g±yanto gacchati, pucchiss±mi nan”ti cintetv± pakkosanatth±ya eka½ purisa½ pahiºi. Tena gantv± “r±j± ta½ pakkosat²”ti vutte “r±j± mayha½ ki½ hoti, n±ha½ r±j±na½ j±n±m²”ti vatv± balakk±rena n²to ekamanta½ aµµh±si. Atha na½ r±j± pucchanto dve g±th± abh±si–

Atha na½ r±j± “ko n±ma te attho”ti pucchi. So ±ha “aha½, deva, dakkhiºadv±re kapaºitthiy± saddhi½ sa½v±sa½ kappesi½, s± ma½ ‘chaºa½ k²¼iss±ma, atthi te kiñci hatthe’ti pucchi, atha na½ aha½ ‘mama nidh±na½ uttaradv±re p±k±rantare µhapitan’ti avaca½, s± ‘gaccha ta½ ±hara, ubhopi k²¼iss±m±’ti ma½ pahiºi, s± me tass± kath± hadaya½ na vijahati, ta½ ma½ anussaranta½ k±matapo tapati, aya½ me, deva, attho”ti. R±j± “tena hi paññ±sa sahass±ni, catt±l²sa, ti½sa, v²sa, dasa, sahassa½, pañca sat±ni, catt±ri, t²ºi, dve, eka½, sata½, paññ±sa½, catt±l²sa½, ti½sa½, v²sa½, dasa, pañca, catt±ri, tayo, dve, eko kah±paºo, a¹¹ho, p±do, catt±ro m±sak±, tayo, dve, eko m±sako”ti pucchi. Tato seµµhiµµh±n±d²hi µh±nantarehi palobhito y±va uparajj± tatheva vatv± “upa¹¹harajja½ te dass±mi, nivatt±”ti vutte sampaµicchi. R±j± “gacchatha mama sah±yassa kesamassu½ k±retv± nh±petv± alaªkaritv± ±netha nan”ti amacce ±º±pesi. Amacc± tath± aka½su. R±j± rajja½ dvidh± bhinditv± tassa upa¹¹harajja½ ad±si. “So pana ta½ gahetv±pi a¹¹ham±sakapemena uttarapassa½ gatoyev±”ti vadanti. So a¹¹ham±sakar±j± n±ma ahosi. Te samagg± sammodam±n± rajja½ k±rent± ekadivasa½ uyy±na½ gami½su. Tattha k²¼itv± udayar±j± a¹¹ham±sakarañño aªke s²sa½ katv± nipajji. Tasmi½ nidda½ okkante pariv±ramanuss± k²¼±nubhavanavasena tattha tattha agama½su.
A¹¹ham±sakar±j± “ki½ me niccak±la½ upa¹¹harajjena, ima½ m±retv± ahameva sakalarajja½ k±ress±m²”ti khagga½ abb±hitv± “pahariss±mi nan”ti cintetv± puna “aya½ r±j± ma½ daliddakapaºa½ manussa½ attan± sam±na½ katv± mahante issariye patiµµhapesi, evar³pa½ n±ma yasad±yaka½ m±retv± rajja½ k±ress±m²ti mama icch± uppann±, ayutta½ vata me kamman”ti sati½ paµilabhitv± asi½ pavesesi. Athassa dutiyampi tatiyampi tatheva citta½ uppajji. Tato cintesi “ida½ citta½ punappuna½ uppajjam±na½ ma½ p±pakamme niyojeyy±”ti. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– mah±r±ja, imassa mah±janassa appak±pi vatthuk±makilesak±m± na ala½ pariyatt±va, bah³hipi ca tehi na tappateva, “aho ime mama r³p± mama sadd±”ti lapanato b±lalapan± k±m±, ime vipassana½ va¹¹hetv± bodhipakkhiy±na½ dhamm±na½ bh±van±nuyogamanuyutto jagganto kulaputto parivajjetha, pariññ±pah±n±bhisamayehi abhisametv± pajaheyy±ti.

Eko panassa gaªgam±lo n±ma maªgalanh±pito, so rañño massu½ karonto paµhama½ khuraparikamma½ katv± pacch± saº¹±sena lom±ni gaºh±ti, rañño ca khuraparikammak±le sukha½ hoti, lomaharaºak±le dukkha½. Evañca pana vatv± r±j± paccekabuddha½ vanditv± “bhante, mayha½ m±tu khamath±”ti ±ha. “Kham±mi, mah±r±j±”ti. R±japaris±pi na½ kham±pesi. R±j± att±na½ niss±ya vasanatth±ya paµiñña½ y±ci. Paccekabuddho pana paµiñña½ adatv± sar±jik±ya paris±ya passantiy±va ±k±se µhatv± rañño ov±da½ datv± gandham±danameva gato.
