10. Eva½ me suta½– eka½ samaya½ bhagav± s±vatthiya½ viharati jetavane an±thapiº¹ikassa ±r±me. Tena kho pana samayena b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo supp±rake paµivasati samuddat²re sakkato garukato m±nito p³jito apacito l±bh² c²varapiº¹ap±tasen±sanagil±napaccayabhesajjaparikkh±r±na½. Atha kho b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa rahogatassa paµisall²nassa eva½ cetaso parivitakko udap±di– “ye kho keci loke arahanto v± arahattamagga½ v± sam±pann±, aha½ tesa½ aññataro”ti.
Atha kho b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa pur±ºas±lohit± devat± anukampik± atthak±m± b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa cetas± cetoparivitakkamaññ±ya yena b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± b±hiya½ d±ruc²riya½ etadavoca– “neva kho tva½ b±hiya, arah±, n±pi arahattamagga½ v± sam±panno. S±pi te paµipad± natthi y±ya tva½ arah± v± assa [assasi (sy±. ka.)] arahattamagga½ v± sam±panno”ti.
“Atha ke carahi sadevake loke arahanto v± arahattamagga½ v± sam±panno”ti? “Atthi, b±hiya, uttaresu janapadesu [janapade (s².)] s±vatthi n±ma nagara½. Tattha so bhagav± etarahi viharati araha½ samm±sambuddho. So hi, b±hiya, bhagav± arah± ceva arahatt±ya ca dhamma½ deset²”ti.
Atha kho b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo t±ya devat±ya sa½vejito t±vadeva supp±rakamh± pakk±mi. Sabbattha ekarattipariv±sena yena s±vatthi jetavana½ an±thapiº¹ikassa ±r±mo tenupasaªkami. Tena kho pana samayena sambahul± bhikkh³ abbhok±se caªkamanti. Atha kho b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo yena te bhikkh³ tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± te bhikkh³ etadavoca– “kaha½ nu kho, bhante, etarahi bhagav± viharati araha½ samm±sambuddho? Dassanak±mamh± maya½ ta½ bhagavanta½ arahanta½ samm±sambuddhan”ti. “Antaraghara½ paviµµho kho, b±hiya, bhagav± piº¹±y±”ti.
Atha kho b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo taram±nar³po jetavan± nikkhamitv± s±vatthi½ pavisitv± addasa bhagavanta½ s±vatthiya½ piº¹±ya caranta½ p±s±dika½ pas±dan²ya½ santindriya½ santam±nasa½ uttamadamathasamathamanuppatta½ danta½ gutta½ yatindriya½ n±ga½. Disv±na yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavato p±de siras± nipatitv± bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “desetu me, bhante bhagav±, dhamma½; desetu, sugato, dhamma½, ya½ mamassa d²gharatta½ hit±ya sukh±y±”ti. Eva½ vutte, bhagav± b±hiya½ d±ruc²riya½ etadavoca– “ak±lo kho t±va, b±hiya, antaraghara½ paviµµhamh± piº¹±y±”ti.
Dutiyampi kho b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “dujj±na½ kho paneta½, bhante, bhagavato v± j²vitantar±y±na½, mayha½ v± j²vitantar±y±na½ Desetu me, bhante bhagav±, dhamma½; desetu, sugato, dhamma½, ya½ mamassa d²gharatta½ hit±ya sukh±y±”ti. Dutiyampi kho bhagav± b±hiya½ d±ruc²riya½ etadavoca– “ak±lo kho t±va, b±hiya, antaraghara½ paviµµhamh± piº¹±y±”ti.
Tatiyampi kho b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “dujj±na½ kho paneta½, bhante, bhagavato v± j²vitantar±y±na½, mayha½ v± j²vitantar±y±na½. Desetu me bhante bhagav±, dhamma½; desetu, sugato, dhamma½, ya½ mamassa d²gharatta½ hit±ya sukh±y±”ti.
“Tasm±tiha te, b±hiya, eva½ sikkhitabba½– ‘diµµhe diµµhamatta½ bhavissati, sute sutamatta½ bhavissati, mute mutamatta½ bhavissati, viññ±te viññ±tamatta½ bhavissat²’ti. Evañhi te, b±hiya, sikkhitabba½. Yato kho te, b±hiya, diµµhe diµµhamatta½ bhavissati, sute sutamatta½ bhavissati, mute mutamatta½ bhavissati, viññ±te viññ±tamatta½ bhavissati, tato tva½, b±hiya, na tena; yato tva½, b±hiya, na tena tato tva½, b±hiya, na tattha yato tva½, b±hiya, na tattha, tato tva½, b±hiya, nevidha na hura½ na ubhayamantarena. Esevanto dukkhass±”ti.
Atha kho b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa bhagavato im±ya sa½khitt±ya dhammadesan±ya t±vadeva anup±d±ya ±savehi citta½ vimucci.
Atha kho bhagav± b±hiya½ d±ruc²riya½ imin± sa½khittena ov±dena ovaditv± pakk±mi. Atha kho acirapakkantassa bhagavato b±hiya½ d±ruc²riya½ g±v² taruºavacch± adhipatitv± [adhip±tetv± (s². sy±. p².), adhip±titv± (ka.)] j²vit± voropesi.
Atha kho bhagav± s±vatthiya½ piº¹±ya caritv± pacch±bhatta½ piº¹ap±tapaµikkanto sambahulehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ nagaramh± nikkhamitv± addasa b±hiya½ d±ruc²riya½ k±laªkata½ [k±lakata½ (s². sy±. ka½.)]; disv±na bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “gaºhatha, bhikkhave, b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa sar²raka½; mañcaka½ ±ropetv± n²haritv± jh±petha; th³pañcassa karotha. Sabrahmac±r² vo, bhikkhave, k±laªkato”ti.
“Eva½, bhante”ti kho te bhikkh³ bhagavato paµissutv± b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa sar²raka½ mañcaka½ ±ropetv± n²haritv± jh±petv± th³pañcassa katv± yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di½su. Ekamanta½ nisinn± kho te bhikkh³ bhagavanta½ etadavocu½– “da¹¹ha½, bhante, b±hiyassa d±ruc²riyassa sar²ra½, th³po cassa kato. Tassa k± gati, ko abhisampar±yo”ti? “Paº¹ito, bhikkhave, b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo paccap±di dhammass±nudhamma½; na ca ma½ dhamm±dhikaraºa½ vihesesi. Parinibbuto, bhikkhave, b±hiyo d±ruc²riyo”ti.
Atha kho bhagav± etamattha½ viditv± t±ya½ vel±ya½ ima½ ud±na½ ud±nesi–
“Yattha ±po ca pathav², tejo v±yo na g±dhati;
na tattha sukk± jotanti, ±dicco nappak±sati;
na tattha candim± bh±ti, tamo tattha na vijjati.
“Yad± ca attan±vedi [vedh² (ka.)], muni monena br±hmaºo;
atha r³p± ar³p± ca, sukhadukkh± pamuccat²”ti. Dasama½.
