54. Eva½ me suta½– eka½ samaya½ bhagav± s±vatthiya½ viharati jetavane an±thapiº¹ikassa ±r±me. Tena kho pana samayena sambahul± n±n±titthiyasamaºabr±hmaºaparibb±jak± s±vatthiya½ paµivasanti n±n±diµµhik± n±n±khantik± n±n±rucik± n±n±diµµhinissayanissit±.
Santeke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “sassato loko, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santi paneke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “asassato loko, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santeke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “antav± loko, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santi paneke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “anantav± loko, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santeke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “ta½ j²va½ ta½ sar²ra½, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santi paneke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “añña½ j²va½ añña½ sar²ra½, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santeke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “hoti tath±gato para½ maraº± idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santi paneke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “na hoti tath±gato para½ maraº±, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santeke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “hoti ca na ca hoti tath±gato para½ maraº±, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti. Santi paneke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– “neva hoti na na hoti tath±gato para½ maraº±, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan”ti.
Te bhaº¹anaj±t± kalahaj±t± viv±d±pann± aññamañña½ mukhasatt²hi vitudant± viharanti– “ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo”ti.
Atha kho sambahul± bhikkh³ pubbaºhasamaya½ niv±setv± pattac²varam±d±ya s±vatthi½ piº¹±ya p±visi½su. S±vatthiya½ piº¹±ya caritv± pacch±bhatta½ piº¹ap±tapaµikkant± yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di½su. Ekamanta½ nisinn± kho te bhikkh³ bhagavanta½ etadavocu½–
“Idha, bhante, sambahul± n±n±titthiyasamaºabr±hmaºaparibb±jak± s±vatthiya½ paµivasanti n±n±diµµhik± n±n±khantik± n±n±rucik± n±n±diµµhinissayanissit±.
“Santeke samaºabr±hmaº± eva½v±dino eva½diµµhino– ‘sassato loko, idameva sacca½ moghamaññan’ti…pe… te bhaº¹anaj±t± kalahaj±t± viv±d±pann± aññamañña½ mukhasatt²hi vitudant± viharanti– ‘ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo”’ti.
“Aññatitthiy±, bhikkhave, paribb±jak± andh± acakkhuk±; attha½ na j±nanti, anattha½ na j±nanti, dhamma½ na j±nanti, adhamma½ na j±nanti. Te attha½ aj±nant± anattha½ aj±nant± dhamma½ aj±nant± adhamma½ aj±nant± bhaº¹anaj±t± kalahaj±t± viv±d±pann± aññamañña½ mukhasatt²hi vitudant± viharanti– ‘ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo”’ti.
“Bh³tapubba½, bhikkhave, imiss±yeva s±vatthiy± aññataro r±j± ahosi. Atha kho, bhikkhave, so r±j± aññatara½ purisa½ ±mantesi– ‘ehi tva½, ambho purisa, y±vatak± s±vatthiy± jaccandh± te sabbe ekajjha½ sannip±teh²’ti. ‘Eva½, dev±’ti kho, bhikkhave, so puriso tassa rañño paµissutv± y±vatak± s±vatthiy± jaccandh± te sabbe gahetv± yena so r±j± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± ta½ r±j±na½ etadavoca– ‘sannip±tit± kho te, deva, y±vatak± s±vatthiy± jaccandh±’ti ‘Tena hi, bhaºe, jaccandh±na½ hatthi½ dasseh²’ti. ‘Eva½, dev±’ti kho, bhikkhave, so puriso tassa rañño paµissutv± jaccandh±na½ hatthi½ dassesi.
“Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa s²sa½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa kaººa½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa danta½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa soº¹a½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa k±ya½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa p±da½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa satthi½ [piµµhi½ (sy±.)] dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa naªguµµha½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti. Ekacc±na½ jaccandh±na½ hatthissa v±ladhi½ dassesi– ‘ediso, jaccandh±, hatth²”’ti.
“Atha kho, bhikkhave, so puriso jaccandh±na½ hatthi½ dassetv± yena so r±j± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± ta½ r±j±na½ etadavoca– ‘diµµho kho tehi, deva, jaccandhehi hatth²; yassa d±ni k±la½ maññas²’ti.
“Atha kho, bhikkhave, so r±j± yena te jaccandh± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± te jaccandhe etadavoca– ‘diµµho vo, jaccandh±, hatth²’ti ‘Eva½, deva, diµµho no hatth²’ti. ‘Vadetha, jaccandh±, k²diso hatth²’ti?
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa s²sa½ diµµha½ ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi kumbho’ti.
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa kaººo diµµho ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi suppo’ti.
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa danto diµµho ahosi, te evam±ha½su ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi kh²lo’ti.
“Yehi bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa soº¹o diµµho ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi naªgal²s±’ti.
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa k±yo diµµho ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi koµµho’ti.
“Yehi bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa p±do diµµho ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi th³ºo’ti.
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa satthi diµµho [piµµhi diµµ± (ka. s². sy±. p².), satthi diµµh± (ka. s².)] hosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi udukkhalo’ti.
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa naªguµµha½ diµµha½ ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi musalo’ti.
“Yehi, bhikkhave, jaccandhehi hatthissa v±ladhi diµµho ahosi, te evam±ha½su– ‘ediso, deva, hatth² seyyath±pi sammajjan²’ti.
“Te ‘ediso hatth², nediso hatth²; nediso hatth², ediso hatth²”’ti aññamañña½ muµµh²hi sa½sumbhi½su [sa½yujjhi½su (ka. s²., sy±. p².)]. Tena ca pana, bhikkhave, so r±j± attamano ahosi.
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, aññatitthiy± paribb±jak± andh± acakkhuk±. Te attha½ na j±nanti anattha½ na j±nanti, dhamma½ na j±nanti adhamma½ na j±nanti. Te attha½ aj±nant± anattha½ aj±nant±, dhamma½ aj±nant± adhamma½ aj±nant± bhaº¹anaj±t± kalahaj±t± viv±d±pann± aññamañña½ mukhasatt²hi vitudant± viharanti– ‘ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo; nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo”’ti.
Atha kho bhagav± etamattha½ viditv± t±ya½ vel±ya½ ima½ ud±na½ ud±nesi–
“Imesu kira sajjanti, eke samaºabr±hmaº±;
viggayha na½ vivadanti, jan± ekaªgadassino”ti. Catuttha½.
