At²te kira kassapasamm±sambuddho v²satikh²º±savasahassapariv±ro b±r±ºasi½ agam±si. Manuss± attano bala½ sallakkhetv± aµµhapi dasapi ekato hutv± agantukad±n±d²ni ada½su. Athekadivasa½ satth± bhattakiccapariyos±ne eva½ anumodanamak±si–
“Up±sak± idha ekacco ‘attano santakameva d±tu½ vaµµati, ki½ parena sam±dapiten±’ti attan±va d±na½ deti, para½ na sam±dapeti So nibbattanibbattaµµh±ne bhogasampada½ labhati, no pariv±rasampada½. Ekacco para½ sam±dapeti, attan± na deti. So nibbattanibbattaµµh±ne pariv±rasampada½ labhati, no bhogasampada½ ekacco attan±pi na deti, parampi na sam±dapeti. So nibbattanibbattaµµh±ne neva bhogasampada½ labhati, na pariv±rasampada½, vigh±s±dova hutv± j²vati. Ekacco attan± ca deti, parañca sam±dapeti. So nibbattanibbattaµµh±ne bhogasampadampi labhati pariv±rasampadamp²”ti.
Ta½ sutv± sam²pe µhito eko paº¹itapuriso cintesi– “aha½ d±ni tath± kariss±mi, yath± me dvepi sampattiyo bhavissant²”ti. So satth±ra½ vanditv± ±ha– “bhante, sv±tan±ya mayha½ bhikkha½ gaºhath±”ti. “Kittakehi te bhikkh³hi attho”ti? “Kittako pana vo, bhante, pariv±ro”ti? “V²sati bhikkhusahass±n²”ti. “Bhante, sabbehi saddhi½ sv±tan±ya mayha½ bhikkha½ gaºhath±”ti. Satth± adhiv±sesi. So g±ma½ pavisitv±, “ammat±t±, sv±tan±ya may± buddhappamukho bhikkhusaªgho nimantito, tumhe yattak±na½ bhikkh³na½ d±tu½ sakkhissatha, tattak±na½ d±na½ deth±”ti ±rocetv± vicaranto attano attano bala½ sallakkhetv± “maya½ dasanna½ dass±ma, maya½ v²satiy±, maya½ satassa, maya½ pañcasat±nan”ti vutte sabbesa½ vacana½ ±dito paµµh±ya paººe ±ropesi.
Tena ca samayena tasmi½ nagare atiduggatabh±veneva “mah±duggato”ti paññ±to eko puriso atthi. So tampi sammukh±gata½ disv±, samma mah±duggata, may± sv±tan±ya buddhappamukho bhikkhusaªgho nimantito, sve nagarav±sino d±na½ dassanti, “tva½ kati bhikkh³ bhojessas²”ti? “S±mi, mayha½ ki½ bhikkh³hi, bhikkh³hi n±ma sadhan±na½ attho, mayha½ pana sve y±gu-atth±ya taº¹ulan±¼imattampi natthi, aha½ bhati½ katv± j²v±mi, ki½ me bhikkh³h²”ti? Sam±dapakena n±ma byattena bhavitabba½. Tasm± so tena “natth²”ti vuttepi tuºh²bh³to ahutv± evam±ha– “samma mah±duggata, imasmi½ nagare subhojana½ bhuñjitv± sukhumavattha½ niv±setv± n±n±bharaºapaµimaº¹it± sirisayane sayam±n± bah³ jan± sampatti½ anubhavanti, tva½ pana divasa½ bhati½ katv± kucchip³raºamattampi na labhasi, eva½ santepi ‘aha½ pubbe puñña½ akatatt± kiñci na labh±m²’ti na j±n±s²”ti? “J±n±mi, s±m²”ti. “Atha kasm± id±ni puñña½ na karosi, tva½ yuv± balasampanno, ki½ tay± bhati½ katv±pi yath±bala½ d±na½ d±tu½ na vaµµat²”ti? So tasmi½ kathenteyeva sa½vegappatto hutv± “mayhampi eka½ bhikkhu½ paººe ±ropehi, kiñcideva bhati½ katv± ekassa bhikkha½ dass±m²”ti ±ha. Itaro “ki½ ekena bhikkhun± paººe ±ropiten±”ti na ±ropesi? Mah±duggatopi geha½ gantv± bhariya½ ±ha– “bhadde, nagarav±sino sve saªghabhatta½ karissanti, ahampi sam±dapakena ‘ekassa bhikkha½ deh²’ti vutto, mayampi sve ekassa bhikkha½ dass±m±”ti. Athassa bhariy± “maya½ dalidd±, kasm± tay± sampaµicchitan”ti avatv±va, “s±mi, bhaddaka½ te kata½, maya½ pubbepi kiñci adatv± id±ni duggat± j±t±, maya½ ubhopi bhati½ katv± ekassa bhikkha½ dass±ma, s±m²”ti vatv± ubhopi geh± nikkhamitv± bhatiµµh±na½ agama½su.
Mah±seµµhi ta½ disv± “ki½, samma mah±duggata, bhati½ karissas²”ti pucchi. “¾ma, ayy±”ti. “Ki½ karissas²”ti? “Ya½ tumhe k±ressatha, ta½ kariss±m²”ti. “Tena hi maya½ sve dve t²ºi bhikkhusat±ni bhojess±ma, ehi, d±r³ni ph±leh²”ti v±sipharasu½ n²haritv± d±pesi. Mah±duggato da¼ha½ kaccha½ bandhitv± mahuss±happatto v±si½ pah±ya pharasu½ gaºhanto, pharasu½ pah±ya v±si½ gaºhanto d±r³ni ph±leti. Atha na½ seµµhi ±ha– “samma, tva½ ajja ativiya uss±happatto kamma½ karosi, ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti? “S±mi, aha½ sve eka½ bhikkhu½ bhojess±m²”ti. Ta½ sutv± seµµhi pasannam±naso cintesi– “aho imin± dukkara½ kata½, ‘aha½ duggato’ti tuºh²bh±va½ an±pajjitv± ‘bhati½ katv± eka½ bhikkhu½ bhojess±m²’ti vadat²”ti. Seµµhibhariy±pi tassa bhariya½ disv±, “amma, ki½ kamma½ karissas²”ti pucchitv± “ya½ tumhe k±ressatha, ta½ karom²”ti vutte udukkhalas±la½ pavesetv± suppamusal±d²ni d±pesi. S± naccant² viya tuµµhapahaµµh± v²hi½ koµµeti ceva ophuº±ti ca. Atha na½ seµµhibhariy± pucchi– “amma, tva½ ativiya tuµµhapahaµµh± kamma½ karosi, ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti? “Ayye, ima½ bhati½ katv± mayampi eka½ bhikkhu½ bhojess±m±”ti. Ta½ sutv± seµµhibhariy±pi tassa½ “aho vat±ya½ dukkarak±rik±”ti pas²di. Seµµhi mah±duggatassa d±r³na½ ph±litak±le “aya½ te bhat²”ti s±l²na½ catasso n±¼iyo d±petv± “aya½ te tuµµhid±yo”ti apar±pi catasso n±¼iyo d±pesi.
So geha½ gantv± bhariya½ ±ha– “may± bhati½ katv± s±li laddho, aya½ niv±po bhavissati, tay± laddh±ya bhatiy± dadhitelakaµukabhaº¹±ni gaºh±h²”ti. Seµµhibhariy±pi puna tass± eka½ sappikaroµikañceva dadhibh±janañca kaµukabhaº¹añca suddhataº¹u¼in±¼iñca d±pesi. Iti ca ubhinnampi nava taº¹ulan±¼iyo ahesu½. Te “deyyadhammo no laddho”ti tuµµhahaµµh± p±tova uµµhahi½su. Bhariy± mah±duggata½ ±ha– “gaccha, s±mi, paººa½ pariyesitv± ±har±”ti. So antar±paºe paººa½ adisv± nad²t²ra½ gantv± “ajja ayy±na½ bhojana½ d±tu½ labhiss±m²”ti pahaµµham±naso g±yanto paººa½ uccinati. Mah±j±la½ khipitv± µhito kevaµµo “mah±duggatassa saddena bhavitabban”ti ta½ pakkositv± pucchi– “ativiya tuµµhacitto g±yasi, ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti? “Paººa½ uccin±mi, samm±”ti. “Ki½ karissas²”ti? “Eka½ bhikkhu½ bhojess±m²”ti. “Aho sukhito, bhikkhu, so tava ki½ paººa½ kh±dissat²”ti? “Ki½ karomi, samma, attan± laddhapaººena bhojess±m²”ti? “Tena hi eh²”ti. “Ki½ karomi, samm±”ti? “Ime macche gahetv± p±dagghanak±ni a¹¹hagghanak±ni kah±paºagghanak±ni ca udd±n±ni karoh²”ti. So tath± ak±si. Baddhabaddhe macche nagarav±sino nimantitanimantit±na½ bhikkh³na½ atth±ya hari½su. Tassa macchudd±n±ni karontasseva bhikkh±c±ravel± p±puºi. So vela½ sallakkhetv± “gamiss±maha½, samma, aya½ bhikkh³na½ ±gamanavel±”ti ±ha. “Atthi pana kiñci macchudd±nan”ti? “Natthi, samma, sabb±ni kh²º±n²”ti. “Tena hi may± attano atth±ya v±luk±ya nikhaºitv± catt±ro rohitamacch± µhapit±, sace bhikkhu½ bhojetuk±mosi, ime gahetv± gacch±”ti te macche tassa ad±si.
Ta½ divasa½ pana satth± pacc³sak±le loka½ volokento mah±duggata½ attano ñ±ºaj±lassa anto paviµµha½ disv± “ki½ nu kho bhavissat²”ti ±vajjento “mah±duggato ‘eka½ bhikkhu½ bhojess±m²’ti bhariy±ya saddhi½ hiyyo bhati½ ak±si, katara½ nu kho bhikkhu½ labhissat²”ti cintetv± “manuss± paººe ±ropitasaññ±ya bhikkh³ gahetv± attano attano gehesu nis²d±pessanti, mah±duggato ma½ µhapetv± añña½ bhikkhu½ na labhissat²”ti upadh±resi. Buddh± kira duggatesu anukampa½ karonti. Tasm± satth± p±tova sar²rapaµijaggana½ katv± “mah±duggata½ saªgaºhiss±m²”ti gandhakuµi½ pavisitv± nis²di. Mah±duggatepi macche gahetv± geha½ pavisante sakkassa paº¹ukambalasil±sana½ uºh±k±ra½ dassesi. So “ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti olokento “hiyyo, mah±duggato ‘ekassa bhikkhuno bhikkha½ dass±m²’ti attano bhariy±ya saddhi½ bhati½ ak±si, katara½ nu kho bhikkhu½ labhissat²”ti cintetv± “natthetassa añño bhikkhu, satth± pana mah±duggatassa saªgaha½ kariss±m²”ti gandhakuµiya½ nisinno. Mah±duggato attano upakappanaka½ y±gubhatta½ paººas³peyyampi tath±gatassa dadeyya, “ya½n³n±ha½ mah±duggatassa geha½ gantv± bhattak±rakakamma½ kareyyan”ti aññ±takavesena tassa gehasam²pa½ gantv± “atthi nu kho kassaci kiñci bhatiy± k±tabban”ti pucchi. Mah±duggato ta½ disv± ±ha– “samma, ki½ kamma½ karissas²”ti? “Aha½, s±mi, sabbasippiko, mayha½ aj±nanasippa½ n±ma natthi, y±gubhatt±d²nipi samp±detu½ j±n±m²”ti. “Samma, maya½ tava kammena atthik±, tuyha½ pana kiñci d±tabba½ bhati½ na pass±m±”ti. “Ki½ pana te kattabban”ti? “Ekassa bhikkhussa bhikkha½ d±tuk±momhi, tassa y±gubhattasa½vidh±na½ icch±m²”ti. “Sace bhikkhussa bhikkha½ dassasi, na me bhatiy± attho, ki½ mama puñña½ na vaµµat²”ti? “Eva½ sante s±dhu, samma, pavis±”ti. So tassa geha½ pavisitv± telataº¹ul±d²ni ±har±petv± “gaccha, attano pattabhikkhu½ ±neh²”ti ta½ uyyojesi. D±naveyy±vaµikopi paººe ±ropitaniy±meneva tesa½ tesa½ geh±ni bhikkh³ pahiºi.
Mah±duggato tassa santika½ gantv± “mayha½ pattabhikkhu½ deh²”ti ±ha. So tasmi½ khaºe sati½ labhitv± “aha½ tava bhikkhu½ pamuµµho”ti ±ha. Mah±duggato tikhiº±ya sattiy± kucchiya½ pahaµo viya, “s±mi, kasm± ma½ n±sesi, aha½ tay± hiyyo sam±dapito bhariy±ya saddhi½ divasa½ bhati½ katv± ajja p±tova paººatth±ya nad²t²re ±hiº¹itv± ±gato, dehi me eka½ bhikkhun”ti b±h± paggayha paridevi. Manuss± sannipatitv± “kimeta½, mah±duggat±”ti pucchi½su. So tamattha½ ±rocesi. Te veyy±vaµika½ pucchi½su– “sacca½ kira, samma, tay± esa ‘bhati½ katv± ekassa bhikkhussa bhikkha½ deh²’ti sam±dapito”ti? “¾ma ayy±”ti. “Bh±riya½ te kamma½ kata½, yo tva½ ettake bhikkh³ sa½vidahanto etassa eka½ bhikkhu½ n±d±s²”ti. So tesa½ vacanena maªkubh³to ta½ ±ha– “samma mah±duggata, m± ma½ n±sayi, aha½ tava k±raº± mah±vihesa½ patto, manuss± paººe ±ropitaniy±mena attano attano pattabhikkh³ nayi½su, attano gehe nisinnabhikkhu½ n²haritv± dento n±ma natthi, satth± pana mukha½ dhovitv± gandhakuµiyameva nisinno, r±jayuvar±jasen±pati-±dayo satthu gandhakuµito nikkhamana½ olokent± nisinn± satthu patta½ gahetv± ‘gamiss±m±’ti. Buddh± n±ma duggate anukampa½ karonti, tva½ vih±ra½ gantv± ‘duggatomhi, bhante, mama saªgaha½ karoth±’ti satth±ra½ vanda, sace te puñña½ atthi, addh± lacchas²”ti.
So vih±ra½ agam±si. Atha na½ aññesu divasesu vih±re vigh±s±dabh±vena diµµhatt± r±jayuvar±j±dayo, “mah±duggata, na t±va bhattak±lo, kasm± tva½ ±gacchas²”ti ±ha½su. So “j±n±mi, s±mi, ‘na t±va bhattak±lo’ti. Satth±ra½ pana vanditu½ ±gacch±m²”ti vadanto gantv± gandhakuµiy± umm±re s²sa½ µhapetv± pañcapatiµµhitena vanditv±, “bhante, imasmi½ nagare may± duggatataro natthi, avassayo me hotha, karotha me saªgahan”ti ±ha. Satth± gandhakuµidv±ra½ vivaritv± patta½ n²haritv± tassa hatthe µhapesi. So cakkavattisiri½ patto viya ahosi, r±jayuvar±j±dayo aññamaññassa mukh±ni olokayi½su. Satth±r± dinnapattañhi koci issariyavasena gahetu½ samattho n±ma natthi. Eva½ pana vadi½su, “samma mah±duggata, satthu patta½ amh±ka½ dehi ettaka½ n±ma te dhana½ dass±ma, tva½ duggato dhana½ gaºh±hi, ki½ te patten±”ti? Mah±duggato “na kassaci dass±mi, na me dhanena attho, satth±ra½yeva bhojess±m²”ti ±ha. Avases± ta½ y±citv± patta½ alabhitv± nivatti½su. R±j± pana “mah±duggato dhanena palobhiyam±nopi satthu patta½ na deti, satth±r± ca saya½ dinnapatta½ koci gahetu½ na sakkoti, imassa deyyadhammo n±ma kittako bhavissati, imin± deyyadhammassa dinnak±le satth±ra½ ±d±ya geha½ netv± mayha½ samp±dita½ ±h±ra½ dass±m²”ti cintetv± satth±r± saddhi½yeva agam±si.
