Tad± pana na½ upajjh±yo, “s±maºera, katha½ pana sukhit± honti, ‘katha½ pana dukkh± muccant²’ti imesa½ no dvinna½ pad±na½ attha½ katheh²”ti ±ha. Ekacce “l±bh± vata no, ye maya½ evar³pa½ bhadanta½ guºa½ v± aguºa½ v± aj±nant±pi upaµµhahimha id±ni ca panassa santike dhamma½ sotu½ labhimh±”ti tussi½su.
Samm±sambuddhopi ta½ divasa½ pacc³sasamaye loka½ volokento vanav±s²tissassa upaµµh±ke attano ñ±ºaj±lassa anto paviµµhe disv± “ki½ nu kho bhavissat²”ti ±vajjento imamattha½ upadh±resi “vanav±s²tissas±maºerassa upaµµh±k± ekacce tuµµh±, ekacce kuddh±, mayha½ puttassa pana s±maºerassa kuddh± nirayabh±gino bhavissanti, gantabbameva tattha may±, mayi gate sabbepi te s±maºere mettacitta½ katv± dukkh± muccissant²”ti. Satth± jetavanasmi½yeva c²vara½ p±rupitv± pattam±d±ya ekacittakkhaºeneva gantv± bhikkh³na½ purato µhitameva att±na½ dassesi. “Samm±sambuddho ±gato”ti sakalag±mo saªkhubhitv± ekakol±halo ahosi. Manuss± udaggacitt± buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ nis²d±petv± y±gu½ datv± khajjaka½ ada½su. S±maºero bhatte aniµµhiteyeva antog±ma½ p±visi. G±mav±sino n²haritv± tassa sakkacca½ bhikkha½ ada½su. S±maºeropi, “bhante, aya½ itthann±mo, aya½ itthann±mo”ti ±cikkham±nova agam±si. Satth± tassa vasanaµµh±na½ gantv± pabbatamatthaka½ abhiruhi. Tattha µhit±na½ pana mah±samuddo paññ±yati. Satth± s±maºera½ pucchi– “tissa, pabbatamatthake µhito ito cito ca oloketv± ki½ passas²”ti? “Mah±samudda½, bhante”ti. “Mah±samudda½ disv± ki½ cintes²”ti? “Mama dukkhitak±le rodantassa cat³hi mah±samuddehi atirekatarena assun± bhavitabbanti ida½, bhante, cintesin”ti. “S±dhu s±dhu, tissa, evameta½. Atha na½ puna pucchi– “tissa, kaha½ vasas²”ti? “Imasmi½ pabbh±re, bhante”ti. “Tattha pana vasanto ki½ cintes²”ti? “May± marantena imasmi½ µh±ne katassa sar²ranikkhepassa paricchedo ‘natth²’ti cintesi½, bhante”ti. “S±dhu s±dhu, tissa, evameta½. Puna satth± s±maºera½ pucchi– “tissa, imasmi½ vanasaº¹e d²pi-±d²na½ saddena bh±yasi, na bh±yas²”ti? “Na bh±y±mi bhagav±, apica kho pana me etesa½ sadda½ sutv± vanarati n±ma uppajjat²”ti vatv± saµµhimatt±hi g±th±hi vanavaººana½ n±ma kathesi. Atha na½ satth± “tiss±”ti ±mantesi. “Ki½, bhante”ti? “Maya½ gacch±ma, tva½ gamissasi, nivattissas²”ti. “Mayha½ upajjh±ye ma½ ±d±ya gacchante gamiss±mi, nivattente nivattiss±mi bhante”ti Satth± bhikkhusaªghena saddhi½ pakk±mi.
