S±riputtattherasa kira pitu vaªgantabr±hmaºassa sah±yako mah±senabr±hmaºo n±ma r±jagahe vasati. S±riputtatthero ekadivasa½ piº¹±ya caranto tasmi½ anukamp±ya tassa gehadv±ra½ agam±si. So pana parikkh²ºavibhavo daliddo. So “mama putto mayha½ gehadv±ra½ piº¹±ya caritu½ ±gato bhavissati, ahañcamhi duggato, mayha½ duggatabh±va½ na j±n±ti maññe, natthi me koci deyyadhammo”ti therassa sammukh± bhavitu½ asakkonto nil²yi. Thero aparampi divasa½ agam±si, br±hmaºo tatheva nil²yi. “Kiñcideva labhitv± dass±m²”ti cintentopi n±labhi. Athekadivasa½ ekasmi½ br±hmaºav±cake th³las±µakena saddhi½ p±yasap±ti½ labhitv± ±d±ya geha½ gantv±va thera½ anussari, “ima½ piº¹ap±ta½ may± therassa d±tu½ vaµµat²”ti. Theropi ta½ khaºa½ jh±na½ sam±pajjitv± sam±pattito vuµµh±ya ta½ br±hmaºa½ disv± “br±hmaºo deyyadhamma½ labhitv± mama ±gamana½ pacc±s²sati, may± tattha gantu½ vaµµat²”ti saªgh±µi½ p±rupitv± patta½ ±d±ya tassa gehadv±re µhitameva att±na½ dassesi.
Br±hmaºo thera½ disv±va citta½ pas²di. Atha na½ upasaªkamitv± vanditv± paµisanth±ra½ katv± antogehe nis²d±petv± p±yasap±ti½ gahetv± therassa patte ±kiri Thero upa¹¹ha½ sampaµicchitv± hatthena patta½ pidahi. Atha na½ br±hmaºo ±ha– “bhante, ekapaµiv²samattova aya½ p±yaso, paralokasaªgaha½ me karotha, m± idhalokasaªgaha½, niravasesameva d±tuk±momh²”ti sabba½ ±kiri. Thero tattheva paribhuñji. Athassa bhattakiccapariyos±ne tampi s±µaka½ datv± vanditv± evam±ha– “bhante, ahampi tumhehi diµµhadhammameva p±puºeyyan”ti. Thero “eva½ hotu br±hmaº±”ti tassa anumodana½ katv± uµµh±y±san± pakkamanto anupubbena c±rika½ caranto jetavana½ agam±si. “Duggatak±le dinnad±na½ pana ativiya toset²”ti br±hmaºopi ta½ d±na½ datv± pasannacitto somanassaj±to there adhimatta½ sinehamak±si. So there sineheneva k±la½ katv± s±vatthiya½ therass³paµµh±kakule paµisandhi½ gaºhi Ta½khaºeyeva panassa m±t± “kucchiya½ me gabbho patiµµhito”ti ñatv± s±mikassa ±rocesi. Tass± kira so k±s±yavatthaparidahane doha¼o kucchiya½ puttassa buddhas±sane pabbajj±ya pubbanimitta½ ahosi. Athass± ñ±tak± “dhammiko no dh²t±ya doha¼o”ti s±riputtatthera½ saªghatthera½ katv± pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ asambhinnakh²rap±yasa½ ada½su. S±pi eka½ k±s±va½ niv±setv± eka½ p±rupitv± suvaººasaraka½ gahetv± ±sanapariyante nisinn± ucchiµµhap±yasa½ paribhuñji, doha¼o paµippassambhi. Tass± y±va gabbhavuµµh±n± antarantar± katamaªgalesupi, dasam±saccayena putta½ vij±t±ya katamaªgalesupi s±riputtattherappamukh±na½ pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ appodakamadhup±yasameva ada½su. Pubbe kiresa d±rakena br±hmaºak±le dinnap±yasassa nissando.
J±tamaªgaladivase pana ta½ d±raka½ p±tova nh±petv± maº¹etv± sirisayane satasahassagghanikassa kambalassa upari nipajj±pesu½. So tattha nipannakova thera½ oloketv± “aya½ me pubb±cariyo, may± thera½ niss±ya aya½ sampatti laddh±, may± imassa eka½ paricc±ga½ k±tu½ vaµµat²”ti sikkh±padagahaºatth±ya ±n²yam±no ta½ kambala½ c³¼aªguliy± veµhetv± aggahesi. Athassa “aªguliya½ kambalo laggo”ti te ta½ haritu½ ±rabhi½su. So parodi. ѱtak± “apetha, m± d±raka½ rod±peth±”ti kambaleneva saddhi½ ±nayi½su. So thera½ vandanak±le kambalato aªguli½ apaka¹¹hitv± kambala½ therassa p±dam³le p±tesi. ѱtak± “daharakum±rena aj±nitv± katan”ti avatv± “puttena no dinna½, pariccattameva hotu, bhante”ti vatv±, “bhante, satasahassagghanikena kambalena p³j±k±rakassa tumh±ka½ d±sassa sikkh±pad±ni deth±”ti ±ha½su. “Ko n±mo aya½ d±rako”ti? “Bhante, ayyena sam±nan±mako tisso n±mesa bhavissat²”ti. Thero kira gihik±le upatissam±ºavo n±ma ahosi. M±t±pissa cintesi– “na may± puttassa ajjh±sayo bhinditabbo”ti. Eva½ d±rakassa n±makaraºamaªgala½ katv± puna tassa ±h±raparibhogamaªgalepi puna tassa kaººavijjhanamaªgalepi dussagahaºamaªgalepi c³¼±kappanamaªgalepi s±riputtattherappamukh±na½ pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ appodakamadhup±yasameva ada½su.
D±rako vuddhimanv±ya sattavassikak±le m±tara½ ±ha– “amma, therassa santike pabbajiss±m²”ti. “S±dhu, t±ta, pubbev±ha½ ‘na may± puttassa ajjh±sayo bhinditabbo’ti mana½ ak±si½, pabbaja, putt±”ti thera½ nimant±petv± tassa ±gatassa bhikkhañca datv±, “bhante, tumh±ka½ d±so ‘pabbajiss±m²’ti vadati, ima½ ±d±ya s±ya½ vih±ra½ ±gamiss±m±”ti thera½ uyyojetv± s±yanhasamaye mahantena sakk±rasamm±nena putta½ ±d±ya vih±ra½ gantv± therassa niyy±desi. Thero tena saddhi½ kathesi– “tissa, pabbajj± n±ma dukkar±, uºhena atthe sati s²ta½ labhati, s²tena atthe sati uºha½ labhati, pabbajit± kicchena j²vanti, tvañca sukhedhito”ti. “Bhante, aha½ tumhehi vuttaniy±meneva sabba½ k±tu½ sakkhiss±m²”ti. Thero “s±dh³”ti vatv± tassa paµik³lamanasik±ravasena tacapañcakakammaµµh±na½ ±cikkhitv± ta½ pabb±jesi. Sakalampi hi dvatti½s±k±ra½ kathetu½ vaµµatiyeva. Sabba½ kathetu½ asakkontena pana tacapañcakakammaµµh±na½ kathetabbameva. Idañhi kammaµµh±na½ sabbabuddh±na½ avijahitameva. Kes±d²su ekekakoµµh±sesu arahatta½ patt±na½ bhikkh³nampi bhikkhun²nampi up±sak±nampi up±sik±nampi paricchedo natthi. Abyatt± bhikkh³ pana pabbajent± arahattass³panissaya½ n±senti. Tasm± thero kammaµµh±na½ ±cikkhitv± pabb±jetv± dasasu s²lesu patiµµh±pesi.
M±t±pitaro puttassa pabbajitasakk±ra½ karont± satt±ha½ vih±reyeva buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa appodakamadhup±yasameva ada½su. Bhikkh³pi “nibaddha½ appodakamadhup±yasa½ paribhuñjitu½ na sakkom±”ti ujjh±yi½su. Tassapi m±t±pitaro sattame divase s±ya½ geha½ agama½su. S±maºero aµµhame divase bhikkh³hi saddhi½ piº¹±ya p±visi. S±vatthiv±sino “s±maºero kira ajja piº¹±ya pavisissati, sakk±ramassa kariss±m±”ti pañcahi s±µakasatehi cumbaµak±ni katv± pañca piº¹ap±tasat±ni sajjetv± ±d±ya paµipathe µhatv± ada½su, punadivase vih±rassa upavana½ ±gantv± ada½su. Eva½ s±maºero dv²heva divasehi s±µakasahassehi saddhi½ piº¹ap±tasahassa½ labhitv± bhikkhusaªghassa d±pesi. Br±hmaºak±le dinnath³las±µakassa kiresa nissando. Athassa bhikkh³ “piº¹ap±tad±yakatisso”ti n±ma½ kari½su.
Punekadivasa½ s±maºero s²tak±le vih±rac±rika½ caranto bhikkh³ tattha tattha aggis±l±d²su visibbente disv± ±ha– “ki½, bhante, visibbent± nisinn±tth±”ti? “S²ta½ no p²¼eti s±maºero”ti. “Bhante, s²tak±le n±ma kambala½ p±rupitu½ vaµµati. So hi s²ta½ paµib±hitu½ samattho”ti. S±maºera “tva½ mah±puñño kambala½ labheyy±si, amh±ka½ kuto kambalo”ti. “Tena hi, bhante, kambalatthik± may± saddhi½ ±gacchant³”ti sakalavih±re ±roc±pesi. Atha bhikkh³ “s±maºerena saddhi½ gantv± kambala½ ±hariss±m±”ti sattavassikas±maºera½ niss±ya sahassamatt± bhikkh³ nikkhami½su. So “ettak±na½ bhikkh³na½ kuto kambala½ labhiss±m²”ti cittampi anupp±detv± te ±d±ya nagar±bhimukho p±y±si. Sudinnassa hi d±nassa evar³po ±nubh±vo hoti. So bahinagareyeva gharapaµip±µiy± caranto pañca kambalasat±ni labhitv± antonagara½ p±visi. Manuss± ito cito ca kambale ±haranti.
Eko pana puriso ±paºadv±rena ±gacchanto pañca kambalasat±ni pas±retv± nisinna½ eka½ ±paºika½ disv± ±ha– “ambho, eko s±maºero kambale sa½haranto ±gacchati, tava kambale paµicch±deh²”ti? “Ki½ pana so dinnake gaºh±ti, ud±hu adinnake”ti? “Dinnake gaºh±t²”ti “Eva½ sante sace icch±mi, dass±mi, no ce, na dass±mi, gaccha tvan”ti uyyojesi. Maccharino hi andhab±l± evar³pesu d±na½ dadam±nesu macchar±yitv± asadisad±na½ disv± macchar±yanto k±¼o (dha. pa. 177) viya niraye nibbattanti. ¾paºiko cintesi– “aya½ puriso attano dhammat±ya ±gaccham±no ‘tava kambale paµicch±deh²’ti ma½ ±ha. ‘Sacepi so dinnaka½ gaºh±’ti, aha½ pana ‘mama santaka½ sace icch±mi, dass±mi, no ce, na dass±m²’ti avaca½, diµµhaka½ pana adentassa lajj± uppajjati, attano santaka½ paµicch±dentassa doso natthi, imesu pañcakambalasatesu dve kambal±ni satasahassagghanik±ni, im±neva paµicch±detu½ vaµµat²”ti. Dvepi kambale das±ya dasa½ sambandhitv± tesa½ antare pakkhipitv± paµicch±desi. S±maºeropi bhikkhusahassena saddhi½ ta½ padesa½ p±puºi. ¾paºikassa s±maºera½ disv±va puttasineho uppajji, sakalasar²ra½ sinehena paripuººa½ ahosi. So cintesi– “tiµµhatu kambal±ni, ima½ disv± hadayama½sampi d±tu½ yuttan”ti. Te dvepi kambale n²haritv± s±maºerassa p±dam³le µhapetv± vanditv±, “bhante, tay± diµµhadhammassa bh±g² assan”ti avaca. Sopissa “eva½ hot³”ti anumodana½ ak±si.
S±maºero antonagarepi pañca kambalasat±ni labhi. Eva½ ekadivasa½yeva kambalasahassa½ labhitv± bhikkhusahassassa ad±si. Athassa kambalad±yakatissattheroti n±ma½ kari½su. Eva½ n±makaraºadivase dinnakambalo sattavassikak±le kambalasahassabh±va½ p±puºi. Buddhas±sanañhi µhapetv± natthañña½ ta½ µh±na½, yattha appa½ dinna½ bahu½ hoti, bahu½ dinna½ bahutara½. Ten±ha bhagav±–
“Tath±r³poya½, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaªgho, yath±r³pe bhikkhusaªghe appa½ dinna½ bahu½ hoti, bahu½ dinna½ bahutaran”ti (ma. ni. 3.146)–

Eva½ s±maºero ekakambalassa nissandena sattavassikova kambalasahassa½ labhi. Tassa jetavane viharantassa abhikkhaºa½ ñ±tid±yak± santika½ ±gantv± kath±sall±pa½ karonti. So cintesi– “may± idha vasantena ñ±tid±yakesu ±gantv± kathentesu akathetumpi na sakk±, etehi saddhi½ kath±papañcena attano patiµµha½ k±tu½ na sakk±, ya½n³n±ha½ satthu santike kammaµµh±na½ uggaºhitv± arañña½ paviseyyan”ti. So satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± vanditv± y±va arahatt± kammaµµh±na½ kath±petv± upajjh±ya½ vanditv± pattac²varam±d±ya vih±r± nikkhamitv± “sace ±sannaµµh±ne vasiss±mi, ñ±tak± ma½ pakkosissant²”ti v²sati yojanasata½ magga½ agam±si. Athekena g±madv±rena gacchanto eka½ mahallakapurisa½ disv± pucchi– “ki½ nu kho, mah±-up±saka imasmi½ padese vasant±na½ ±raññakavih±ro atth²”ti? “Atthi, bhante”ti. “Tena hi me magga½ ±cikkh±h²”ti. Mahallaka-up±sakassa pana ta½ disv±va puttasineho udap±di. Athassa tattheva µhito an±cikkhitv± “ehi, bhante, ±cikkhiss±mi te”ti gahetv± agam±si. S±maºero tena saddhi½ gacchanto antar±magge n±n±pupphaphalapaµimaº¹ite rukkhapabbatapadese disv± “aya½, up±saka, ki½ padeso n±ma, aya½ up±saka ki½ padeso n±m±”ti pucchi. Sopissa tesa½ n±m±ni ±cikkhanto ±raññakavih±ra½ patv± “ida½, bhante, ph±sukaµµh±na½, idheva vas±h²”ti vatv±, “bhante, ko n±mo tvan”ti n±ma½ pucchitv± “aha½ vanav±s²tisso n±ma up±sak±”ti vutte, “sve amh±ka½ g±me bhikkh±ya caritu½ vaµµat²”ti vatv± nivattitv± antog±mameva gato. “Vanav±s²tisso n±ma vih±ra½ ±gato, tassa y±gubhatt±d²ni paµiy±deth±”ti manuss±na½ ±rocesi.
