R±j± pana cintesi– “manuss± n±ma bahum±y±, sace so kenaci up±yena labheyya, kicca½ me na nipphajjeyy±”ti. So k±lasseva dv±ra½ pidah±petv± muddika½ attano santika½ ±har±pesi. Itaropi puriso rañño nh±navel±yamev±gantv± dv±ra½ alabhanto dv±rap±la½ pakkosetv± “dv±ra½ vivar±”ti ±ha. “Na sakk± vivaritu½, r±j± k±lasseva muddika½ datv± r±jageha½ ±har±pes²”ti. Tasmi½ khaºeyeva saµµhiyojanik±ya lohakumbhiy± nibbatt± catt±ro puris± pakkuthit±ya ukkhaliy± taº¹ul± viya samparivattaka½ paccam±n± ti½s±ya vassasahassehi heµµhimatala½ patv± aparehi ti½s±ya vassasahassehi puna mukhavaµµiya½ p±puºi½su. Te s²sa½ ukkhipitv± aññamañña½ oloketv± ekeka½ g±tha½ vattuk±m± vattu½ asakkont± ekeka½ akkhara½ vatv± parivattitv± lohakumbhimeva paviµµh±. Mah±r±ja, ki½ te sadd± sut±ti? “¾cariya, du-iti sa-iti na-iti so-it²ti ime sadde assosi½, imesa½ nipphatti½ upadh±reh²”ti. Br±hmaºassa mah±-andhak±ra½ paviµµhassa viya na kiñci paññ±yati, “na j±n±m²”ti vutte “pana l±bhasakk±ro me parih±yissat²”ti bh±yitv± “bh±riya½, mah±r±j±”ti ±ha. “Ki½, ±cariy±”ti? “J²vitantar±yo te paññ±yat²”ti. Yepissa te honti d±s±ti v± pess±ti v± kammakar±ti v±, tepi daº¹atajjit± bhayatajjit± assumukh± rudam±n± parikamm±ni karont²”ti (sa½. ni. 1.120).
Mah±jano attano attano puttadh²tuñ±t²na½ atth±ya paridevam±no mah±saddamak±si, mah±pathav²-undriyanasaddo viya ahosi. Atha mallik± dev² ta½ sadda½ sutv± rañño santika½ gantv± “ki½ nu kho te, mah±r±ja, indriy±ni ap±katik±ni, kilantar³p±ni viya paññ±yant²”ti pucchi. “Ki½ tuyha½ mallike, tva½ mama kaººam³lena ±sivisampi gacchanta½ na j±n±s²”ti? “Ki½ paneta½, dev±”ti? “Rattibh±ge me evar³po n±ma saddo suto sv±ha½ purohita½ pucchitv± j²vitantar±yo te paññ±yati, sabbasatayañña½ yajitv± j²vita½ labhissas²”ti sutv± “mama j²vitameva mayha½ l±bho”ti ime p±ºe gaºh±pesinti. Mallik± dev², “andhab±losi, mah±r±ja, kiñc±pi mah±bhakkhosi, anekas³pabyañjanavikatika½ doºap±ka½ bhojana½ bhuñjasi, dv²su raµµhesu rajja½ k±resi, paññ± pana te mand±”ti ±ha. “Kasm± eva½ vadesi, dev²”ti? “Kaha½ tay± aññassa maraºena aññassa j²vital±bho diµµhapubbo, andhab±lassa br±hmaºassa katha½ gahetv± kasm± mah±janassa upari dukkha½ khipasi, dhuravih±re sadevakassa lokassa aggapuggalo at²t±d²su appaµihatañ±ºo satth± vasati, ta½ pucchitv± tassov±da½ karoh²”ti vutte r±j± sallahukehi y±nehi mallik±ya saddhi½ vih±ra½ gantv± maraºabhayatajjito kiñci vattu½ asakkonto satth±ra½ vanditv± ekamanta½ nis²di.
Atha na½ satth± “handa kuto nu tva½, mah±r±ja, ±gacchasi div± divass±”ti paµhamatara½ ±lapi. So tuºh²yeva nis²di. Tato mallik± bhagavato ±rocesi– “bhante, raññ± kira majjhimay±masamanantare saddo suto. Atha na½ purohitassa ±rocesi. Purohito ‘j²vitantar±yo te bhavissati, tassa paµigh±tatth±ya sabbasate p±ºe gahetv± tesa½ galalohitena yaññe yajite j²vita½ labhissas²’ti ±ha. R±j± p±ºe gaºh±pesi, ten±ya½ may± idh±n²to”ti. “Eva½ kira, mah±r±j±”ti? “Eva½, bhante”ti. “Kinti te saddo suto”ti? So attan± sutaniy±meneva ±cikkhi. Tath±gatassa ta½ sutv±va ekobh±so ahosi. Atha na½ satt± ±ha– “m± bh±yi, mah±r±ja, tava antar±yo natthi, p±pakammino satth± attano dukkha½ ±v²karont± evam±ha½s³”ti. “Ki½ pana, bhante, tehi katan”ti? Atha kho bhagav± tesa½ kamma½ ±cikkhitu½ “tena hi, mah±r±ja, suº±h²”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari–
At²te v²sativassasahass±yukesu manussesu kassapo bhagav± loke uppajjitv± v²satiy± kh²º±savasahassehi saddhi½ c±rika½ caram±no b±r±ºasimagam±si. B±r±ºasiv±sino dvepi tayopi bahutar±pi ekato hutv± ±gantukad±na½ pavattayi½su. Tad± b±r±ºasiya½ catt±l²sakoµivibhav± catt±ro seµµhiputt± sah±yak± ahesu½. Te mantayi½su– “amh±ka½ gehe bahudhana½, tena ki½ karom±”ti? “Evar³pe buddhe c±rika½ caram±ne d±na½ dass±ma, s²la½ rakkhiss±ma, p³ja½ kariss±m±”ti ekopi avatv± tesu eko t±va evam±ha– “tikhiºasura½ pivant± madhurama½sa½ kh±dant± vicariss±ma, ida½ amh±ka½ j²vitaphalan”ti. Aparopi evam±ha– “devasika½ tivassikagandhas±libhatta½ n±naggarasehi bhuñjant± vicariss±m±”ti. Aparopi evam±ha– “n±nappak±ra½ p³vakhajjakavikati½ pac±petv± kh±dant± vicariss±m±”ti. Aparopi evam±ha– “samm± maya½ añña½ kiñci na kariss±ma, ‘dhana½ dass±m±’ti vutte aniccham±n± itth² n±ma natthi, tasm± dhanena palobhetv± p±rad±rikakamma½ kariss±m±”ti. “S±dhu, s±dh³”ti sabbeva tassa kath±ya aµµha½su.
