Yath± saªk±raµµh±nasminti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± jetavane viharanto garahadinna½ n±ma nigaºµhas±vaka½ ±rabbha kathesi.
S±vatthiyañhi sirigutto ca garahadinno c±ti dve sah±yak± ahesu½. Tesu sirigutto up±sako buddhas±vako, garahadinno nigaºµhas±vako Ta½ nigaºµh± abhikkhaºa½ eva½ vadanti– “tava sah±yaka½ sirigutta½ ‘ki½ tva½ samaºa½ gotama½ upasaªkamasi, tassa santike ki½ labhissas²’ti vatv± yath± amhe upasaªkamitv± amh±kañca deyyadhamma½ dassati, ki½ eva½ ovaditu½ na vaµµat²”ti. Garahadinno tesa½ vacana½ sutv± abhikkhaºa½ gantv± µhitanisinnaµµh±n±d²su sirigutta½ eva½ ovadati– “samma, ki½ te samaºena gotamena, ta½ upasaªkamitv± ki½ labhissasi, ki½ te mama, ayye, upasaªkamitv± tesa½ d±na½ d±tu½ na vaµµat²”ti? Sirigutto tassa katha½ sutv±pi bah³ divase tuºh² hutv± nibbijjitv± ekadivasa½, “samma, tva½ abhikkhaºa½ ±gantv± ma½ µhitaµµh±n±d²su eva½ vadesi, ‘samaºa½ gotama½ upasaªkamitv± ki½ labhissasi, mama, ayye, upasaªkamitv± tesa½ d±na½ deh²’ti, kathehi t±va me, tava, ayy±, ki½ j±nant²”ti? “‘Aho, s±mi, m± eva½ vada, mama ayy±na½ aññ±ta½ n±ma natthi, sabba½ at²t±n±gatapaccuppanna½ sabba½ k±yavac²manokamma½ ida½ bhavissati, ida½ na bhavissat²’ti sabba½ bhabb±bhabba½ j±nant²”ti? “Eva½ vades²”ti. “¾ma, vadem²”ti. “Yadi eva½, atibh±riya½ te kata½, ettaka½ k±la½ mayha½ etamattha½ an±cikkhantena, ajja may± ayy±na½ ñ±º±nubh±vo ñ±to, gaccha, samma, ayye, mama vacanena nimanteh²”ti. So nigaºµh±na½ santika½ gantv± te vanditv± “mayha½ sah±yako sirigutto sv±tan±ya tumhe nimantet²”ti ±ha. “Siriguttena s±ma½ tva½ vutto”ti? “¾ma, ayy±”ti. Te haµµhatuµµh± hutv± “nipphanna½ no kicca½, siriguttassa amhesu pasannak±lato paµµh±ya k± n±ma sampatti amh±ka½ na bhavissat²”ti vadi½su.
Siriguttass±pi mahanta½ nivesana½. So tasmi½ dvinna½ geh±na½ antare ubhato d²gha½ ±v±µa½ khaº±petv± g³thakalalassa p³r±pesi. Bahi-±v±µe dv²su pariyantesu kh±ºuke koµµ±petv± tesu rajjuyo bandh±petv± ±san±na½ purimap±de ±v±µassa purimapasse µhap±petv± pacchimap±de rajjukesu µhap±pesi. “Eva½ nisinnak±le eva½ ava½sir± patissant²”ti maññam±no yath± ±v±µo na paññ±yati, eva½ ±san±na½ upari paccattharaº±ni d±pesi. Mahant± mahant± c±µiyo µhap±petv± kadalipaººehi ca setapilotik±hi ca mukh±ni bandh±petv± t± tucch± eva gehassa pacchimabh±ge bahi y±gubhattasitthasappitelamadhuph±ºitap³vacuººamakkhit± katv± µhap±pesi. Garahadinno p±tova tassa ghara½ vegena gantv±, “ayy±na½ sakk±ro sajjito”ti pucchi. “¾ma, samma, sajjito”ti. “Kaha½ pana eso”ti. “Et±su ettik±su c±µ²su y±gu, ettik±su bhatta½, ettik±su sappiph±ºitap³v±d²ni p³rit±ni, ±san±ni paññatt±n²”ti. So “s±dh³”ti vatv± gato tassa gatak±le pañcasat± nigaºµh± ±gami½su. Sirigutto geh± nikkhamitv± pañcapatiµµhitena nigaºµhe vanditv± tesa½ purato añjali½ paggayha µhito eva½ cintesi– “tumhe kira at²t±dibheda½ sabba½ j±n±tha, eva½ tumh±ka½ upaµµh±kena mayha½ kathita½. Sace sabba½ tumhe j±n±tha, mayha½ geha½ m± pavisittha. Mama geha½ paviµµh±nañhi vo neva y±gu atthi, na bhatt±d²ni. Sace aj±nitv± pavisissatha, g³tha-±v±µe vo p±tetv± pothess±m²”ti eva½ cintetv± puris±na½ sañña½ ad±si. Eva½ tesa½ nis²danabh±va½ ñatv± pacchimapasse µhatv± ±san±na½ upari paccattharaº±ni apaneyy±tha, m± t±ni asucin± makkhayi½s³ti.
Atha nigaºµhe “ito etha, bhante”ti ±ha. Nigaºµh± pavisitv± paññatt±sanesu nis²ditu½ ±rabhi½su. Atha ne manuss± vadi½su– “±gametha, bhante, m± t±va nis²dath±”ti. “Ki½ k±raº±”ti? “Amh±ka½ geha½ paviµµh±na½ ayy±na½ vatta½ ñatv± nis²ditu½ vaµµat²”ti. “Ki½ k±tu½ vaµµati, ±vuso”ti? “Attano attano patt±sanam³lesu µhatv± sabbepi ekappah±reneva nis²ditu½ vaµµat²”ti. Ida½ kirassa adhipp±yo– “ekasmi½ ±v±µe patite ‘m±, ±vuso, avases± ±sane nis²dant³’ti vattu½ m± labhat³”ti. Te “s±dh³”ti vatv± “imehi kathitakatha½ amhehi k±tu½ vaµµat²”ti cintayi½su. Atha sabbe attano attano patt±sanam³le paµip±µiy± aµµha½su. Atha ne, “bhante, khippa½ ekappah±reneva nis²dath±”ti vatv± tesa½ nisinnabh±va½ ñatv± ±san±na½ upari paccattharaº±ni n²hari½su. Nigaºµh± ekappah±reneva nisinn±, rajj³na½ upari µhapit± ±sanap±d± bhaµµh±, nigaºµh± ava½sir± ±v±µe pati½su. Sirigutto tesu patitesu dv±ra½ pidahitv± te uttiººuttiººe “at²t±n±gatapaccuppanna½ kasm± na j±n±th±”ti daº¹ehi p±thetv± “ettaka½ etesa½ vaµµissat²”ti dv±ra½ vivar±pesi. Te nikkhamitv± pal±yitu½ ±rabhi½su. Gamanamagge pana tesa½ sudh±parikammakata½ bh³mi½ picchila½ k±r±pesi. Te tattha asaºµhahitv± patite patite puna poth±petv± “ala½ ettaka½ tumh±kan”ti uyyojesi. Te “n±sitamh± tay±, n±sitamh± tay±”ti kandant± upaµµh±kassa gehadv±ra½ agama½su.
Garahadinno ta½ vippak±ra½ disv± kuddho “n±sitamhi siriguttena, hattha½ pas±retv± vandant±na½ sadevake loke yath±ruciy± d±tu½ samatthe n±ma puññakkhettabh³te mama, ayye poth±petv± byasana½ p±pes²”ti r±jakula½ gantv± tassa kah±paºasahassa½ daº¹a½ k±resi. Athassa r±j± s±sana½ pesesi. So gantv± r±j±na½ vanditv±, “deva, upaparikkhitv± daº¹a½ gaºhatha, m± anupaparikkhitv±”ti ±ha. “Upaparikkhitv± gaºhiss±m²”ti. “S±dhu, dev±”ti. “Tena hi gaºh±h²”ti. Deva, mayha½ sah±yako nigaºµhas±vako ma½ upasaªkamitv± µhitanisinnaµµh±n±d²su abhiºha½ eva½ vadesi– “samma, ki½ te samaºena gotamena, ta½ upasaªkamitv± ki½ labhissas²”ti ida½ ±di½ katv± sirigutto sabba½ ta½ pavatti½ ±rocetv± “deva, sace imasmi½ k±raºe daº¹a½ gahetu½ yutta½, gaºhath±”ti. R±j± garahadinna½ oloketv± “sacca½ kira te eva½ vuttan”ti ±ha. “Sacca½, dev±”ti. Tva½ ettakampi aj±nante satth±roti gahetv± vicaranto “sabba½ j±nant²”ti ki½ k±raº± tath±gatas±vakassa kathesi. “Tay± ±ropitadaº¹o tuyhameva hot³”ti eva½ sveva daº¹a½ p±pito, tasseva kul³pak± pothetv± n²haµ±.
So ta½ kujjhitv± tato paµµh±ya a¹¹ham±samattampi siriguttena saddhi½ akathetv± cintesi– “eva½ vicaritu½ mayha½ ayutta½, etassa kul³pak±nampi may± byasana½ k±tu½ vaµµat²”ti sirigutta½ upasaªkamitv± ±ha– “sah±ya sirigutt±”ti. “Ki½, samm±”ti? “ѱtisuhajj±na½ n±ma kalahopi hoti viv±dopi, ki½ tva½ kiñci na kathesi, kasm± eva½ karos²”ti? “Samma, tava may± saddhi½ akathanato na kathem²”ti. “Ya½, samma, kata½, katameva ta½ na maya½ metti½ bhindiss±m±”ti. Tato paµµh±ya ubhopi ekaµµh±ne tiµµhanti nis²danti Athekadivasa½ sirigutto garahadinna½ ±ha– “ki½ te nigaºµhehi, te upasaªkamitv± ki½ labhissasi, mama satth±ra½ upasaªkamitu½ v± ayy±na½ d±na½ d±tu½ v± ki½ te na vaµµat²”ti? Sopi etameva pacc±s²sati, tenassa kaº¹uvanaµµh±ne nakhena vilekhita½ viya ahosi. So, “sirigutta, tava satth± ki½ j±n±t²”ti pucchi. “Ambho, m± eva½ vada, satthu me aj±nitabba½ n±ma natthi, at²t±dibheda½ sabba½ j±n±ti, so¼asah±k±rehi satt±na½ citta½ paricchindat²”ti. “Aha½ eva½ na j±n±mi, kasm± mayha½ ettaka½ k±la½ na kathesi, tena hi tva½ gaccha, tava satth±ra½ sv±tan±ya nimantehi, bhojess±mi, pañcahi bhikkhusatehi saddhi½ mama bhikkha½ gaºhitu½ vadeh²”ti.
Sirigutto satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± vanditv± evam±ha– “bhante, mama sah±yako garahadinno tumhe nimant±peti, pañcahi kira bhikkhusatehi saddhi½ sve tassa bhikkha½ gaºhatha, purimadivase kho pana tassa kul³pak±na½ may± ida½ n±ma kata½, may± katassa paµikaraºampi na j±n±mi, tumh±ka½ suddhacittena bhikkha½ d±tuk±matampi na j±n±mi, ±vajjetv± yutta½ ce, adhiv±setha. No ce, m± adhiv±sayitth±”ti. Satth± “ki½ nu kho so amh±ka½ k±tu k±mo”ti ±vajjetv± addasa “dvinna½ geh±na½ antare mahanta½ ±v±µa½ khaº±petv± as²tisakaµamatt±ni khadirad±r³ni ±har±petv± p³r±petv± aggi½ datv± amhe aªg±ra-±v±µe p±tetv± niggaºhituk±mo”ti. Puna ±vajjesi– “ki½ nu kho tattha gatapaccay± attho atthi, natth²”ti. Tato ida½ addasa– “aha½ aªg±ra-±v±µe p±da½ pas±ress±mi, ta½ paµicch±detv± µhapitakilañja½ antaradh±yissati, aªg±rak±su½ bhinditv± cakkamatta½ mah±paduma½ uµµhahissati, ath±ha½ padumakaººik± akkamanto ±sane nis²diss±mi, pañcasat± bhikkh³pi tatheva gantv± nis²dissanti, mah±jano sannipatissati, aha½ tasmi½ sam±game dv²hi g±th±hi anumodana½ kariss±mi, anumodanapariyos±ne catur±s²tiy± p±ºasahass±na½ dhamm±bhisamayo bhavissati, sirigutto ca garahadinno ca sot±pann± bhavissanti, attano ca dhanar±si½ s±sane vikirissanti, ima½ kulaputta½ niss±ya may± gantu½ vaµµat²”ti bhikkha½ adhiv±sesi.
Sirigutto gantv± satthu adhiv±sana½ garahadinnassa ±rocetv± “lokajeµµhassa sakk±ra½ karoh²”ti ±ha. Garahadinno “id±nissa kattabbayuttaka½ j±niss±m²”ti dvinna½ geh±na½ antare mahanta½ ±v±µa½ khaº±petv± as²tisakaµamatt±ni khadirad±r³ni ±har±petv± p³r±petv± aggi½ datv± khadiraªg±rar±s²na½ yoj±petv± sabbaratti½ dham±petv± khadiraªg±rar±si½ k±r±petv± ±v±µamatthake rukkhapadar±ni µhap±petv± kilañjena paµicch±detv± gomayena limp±petv± ekena passena dubbaladaº¹ake attharitv± gamanamagga½ k±resi, “eva½ akkanta-akkantak±le daº¹akesu bhaggesu parivaµµetv± aªg±rak±suya½ patissant²”ti maññam±no gehapacch±bh±ge siriguttena µhapitaniy±meneva c±µiyo µhap±pesi, ±san±nipi tatheva paññ±pesi. Punadivase satth± pañcahi bhikkhusatehi saddhi½ garahadinnassa gehadv±ra½ agam±si. So geh± nikkhamitv± pañcapatiµµhitena vanditv± purato añjali½ paggayha µhito cintesi– “bhante, ‘tumhe kira at²t±dibheda½ sabba½ j±n±tha, satt±na½ so¼asah±k±rehi citta½ paricchindath±’ti eva½ tumh±ka½ upaµµh±kena mayha½ kathita½. Sace j±n±tha, mayha½ geha½ m± pavisittha. Paviµµh±nañhi vo neva y±gu atthi, na bhatt±d²ni, sabbe kho pana tumhe aªg±rak±suya½ p±tetv± niggaºhiss±m²”ti. Eva½ cintetv± satthu patta½ gahetv± “ito etha bhagav±”ti vatv±, “bhante, amh±ka½ geha½ ±gat±na½ vatta½ ñatv± ±gantu½ vaµµat²”ti ±ha. “Ki½ k±tu½ vaµµati, ±vuso”ti? “Ekekassa pavisitv± purato gantv± nisinnak±le pacch± aññena ±gantu½ vaµµat²”ti. Eva½ kirassa ahosi– “purato gacchanta½ aªg±rak±suya½ patita½ disv± avases± na ±gacchissanti, ekekameva p±tetv± niggaºhiss±m²”ti. Satth± “s±dh³”ti vatv± ekakova p±y±si. Garahadinno aªg±rak±su½ patv± apasakkitv± µhito “purato y±tha, bhante”ti ±ha. Atha satth± aªg±rak±sumatthake p±da½ pas±resi, kilañja½ antaradh±yi, aªg±rak±su½ bhinditv± cakkamatt±ni padum±ni uµµhahi½su Satth± padumakaººik± akkamanto gantv± paññatte buddh±sane nis²di, bhikkh³pi tatheva gantv± nis²di½su. Garahadinnassa k±yato ¹±ho uµµhahi.
So vegena gantv± sirigutta½ upasaªkamitv±, “s±mi, me t±ºa½ hoh²”ti ±ha. “Ki½ etan”ti? “Pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ gehe y±gu v± bhatt±d²ni v± natthi, ki½ nu kho karom²”ti? “Ki½ pana tay± katan”ti ±ha. Aha½ dvinna½ geh±na½ antare mahanta½ ±v±µa½ aªg±rassa p³ra½ k±resi½– “tattha p±tetv± niggaºhiss±m²”ti. “Atha na½ bhinditv± mah±padum±ni uµµhahi½su. Sabbe padumakaººik± akkamitv± gantv± paññatt±sanesu nisinn±, id±ni ki½ karomi, s±m²”ti? Nanu tva½ id±neva mayha½ “‘ettik± c±µiyo, ettik± y±gu, ettak±ni satt±d²n²’ti dasses²”ti. “Mus± ta½, s±mi, tucch±va c±µiyo”ti. Hotu, “gaccha, t±su c±µ²su y±gu-±d²ni olokeh²”ti. Ta½ khaºaññeva tena y±su c±µ²su “y±g³”ti vutta½, t± y±guy± p³rayi½su, y±su “bhatt±d²n²”ti vutta½, t± bhatt±d²na½ paripuºº±va ahesu½. Ta½ sampatti½ disv±va garahadinnassa sar²ra½ p²tip±mojjena parip³rita½, citta½ pasanna½. So sakkacca½ buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ parivisitv± katabhattakiccassa satthuno anumodana½ k±retuk±mo patta½ gaºhi. Satth± anumodana½ karonto “ime satt± paññ±cakkhuno abh±veneva mama s±vak±na½ buddhas±sanassa guºa½ na j±nanti. Paññ±cakkhuvirahit± hi andh± n±ma, paññavanto sacakkhuk± n±m±”ti vatv± im± g±th± abh±si–

Tattha saªk±radh±nasminti saªk±raµh±nasmi½, kacavarar±simh²ti attho. Ujjhitasmi½ mah±patheti mah±magge cha¹¹itasmi½. Sucigandhanti surabhigandha½. Mano ettha ramat²ti manorama½. Saªk±rabh³tes³ti saªk±ramiva bh³tesu. Puthujjaneti puth³na½ kiles±na½ jananato eva½laddhan±me lokiyamah±jane. Ida½ vutta½ hoti– yath± n±ma mah±pathe cha¹¹ite saªk±rar±simhi asucijegucchiyapaµik³lepi sucigandha½ paduma½ j±yetha, ta½ r±jar±jamah±matt±d²na½ manorama½ piya½ man±pa½ uparimatthake patiµµh±n±rahameva bhaveyya, evameva saªk±rabh³tesupi puthujjanesu j±to nippaññassa mah±janassa acakkhukassa antare nibbattopi attano paññ±balena k±mesu ±d²nava½, nekkhamme ca ±nisa½sa½ disv± nikkhamitv± pabbajito pabbajj±mattenapi, kato uttari½ s²lasam±dhipaññ±vimuttivimuttiñ±ºadassan±ni ±r±dhetv±pi atirocati. Samm±sambuddhas±vako hi kh²º±savo bhikkhu andhabh³te puthujjane atikkamitv± rocati virocati sobhat²ti.
Desan±vas±ne catur±s²tiy± p±ºasahass±na½ dhamm±bhisamayo ahosi. Garahadinno ca sirigutto ca sot±pattiphala½ p±puºi½su. Te sabba½ attano dhana½ buddhas±sane vippakiri½su. Satth± uµµh±y±san± vih±ramagam±si. Bhikkh³ s±yanhasamaye dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½– “aho acchariy± buddhaguº± n±ma, tath±r³pa½ n±ma khadiraªg±rar±si½ bhinditv± padum±ni uµµhahi½s³”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv±, “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte– “anacchariya½, bhikkhave, ya½ mama etarahi buddhabh³tassa aªg±rar±simh± padum±ni uµµhit±ni, aparipakke ñ±ºe vattam±nassa bodhisattabh³tassapi me uµµhahi½s³”ti vatv±, “kad±, bhante, ±cikkhatha no”ti y±cito at²ta½ ±haritv±–
“K±ma½ pat±mi niraya½, uddha½p±do ava½siro;
