Athekadivasa½ r±j± uparip±s±de µhito antarav²thi½ olokayam±no “an±thapiº¹ikassa c³¼a-an±thapiº¹ikassa vis±kh±ya suppav±s±y±”ti etesa½ gehe nicca½ bhattakiccatth±ya gacchante anekasahasse bhikkh³ disv±, “kaha½, ayy±, gacchant²”ti pucchitv±, “deva, an±thapiº¹ikassa gehe niccabhattasal±kabhattagil±nabhatt±d²na½ atth±ya devasika½ dve bhikkhusahass±ni gacchanti, c³¼a-an±thapiº¹ikassa gehe pañcasat±ni, tath± vis±kh±ya tath± suppav±s±y±”ti vutte sayampi bhikkhusaªgha½ upaµµhahituk±mo vih±ra½ gantv± bhikkhusahassena saddhi½ satth±ra½ nimantetv± satt±ha½ sahatth± d±na½ datv± sattame divase satth±ra½ vanditv±, “bhante, pañcahi me bhikkhusatehi saddhi½ nibaddha½ bhikkha½ gaºhath±”ti ±ha. “Mah±r±ja buddh± n±ma ekaµµh±ne nibaddha½ bhikkha½ na gaºhanti, bah³ jan± buddh±na½ ±gamana½ pacc±s²sant²”ti. “Tena hi eka½ bhikkhu½ nibaddha½ peseth±”ti ±ha. Satth± ±nandattherassa bh±ra½ ak±si. R±j± bhikkhusaªghe ±gate patta½ gahetv±, “ime n±ma parivisant³”ti avic±retv±va satt±ha½ sayameva parivisitv± aµµhame divase vikkhittacitto pamajjamak±si. R±jakule n±ma an±ºatt± ±san±ni paññ±petv± bhikkh³ nis²d±petv± parivisitu½ na labhanti “na maya½ idha µh±tu½ sakkhiss±m±”ti bah³ bhikkh³ pakkami½su. R±j± dutiyadivasepi pamajji, dutiyadivasepi bah³ bhikkh³ pakkami½su. Tatiyadivasepi pamajji, tad± ±nandatthera½ ekakameva µhapetv± avases± pakkami½su. Puññavant± n±ma k±raºavasik± honti, kul±na½ pas±da½ rakkhanti. Tath±gatassa ca s±riputtatthero mah±moggall±nattheroti dve aggas±vak±, khem± uppalavaºº±ti dve aggas±vik±, up±sakesu citto, gahapati, hatthako ±¼avakoti dve agga-up±sak±, up±sik±su ve¼ukaºµhak² nandam±t±, khujjuttar±ti dve agga-up±sik±, iti ime aµµha jane ±di½ katv± µh±nantarapatt± sabbepi s±vak± ekadesena dasanna½ p±ram²na½ p³ritatt± mah±puññ± abhin²h±rasampann±. ¾nandattheropi kappasatasahassa½ p³ritap±ram² abhin²h±rasampanno mah±puñño attano k±raºavasikat±ya kulassa pas±da½ rakkhanto aµµh±si. Ta½ ekakameva nis²d±petv± parivisi½su.
R±j± bhikkh³na½ gatak±le ±gantv± kh±dan²yabhojan²y±ni tatheva µhit±ni disv±, “ki½, ayy±, n±gami½s³”ti pucchitv±, “±nandatthero ekakova ±gato dev±”ti sutv±, “addh± ettaka½ me bhattacchedanamaka½s³”ti bhikkh³na½ kuddho satthu santika½ gantv±, “bhante, may± pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ bhikkh± paµiyatt±, ±nandatthero kira ekakov±gato, paµiyatt± bhikkh± tatheva µhit±, pañcasat± bhikkh³ mama gehe sañña½ na kari½su, ki½ nu kho k±raºan”ti ±ha. Satth± bhikkh³na½ dosa½ avatv±, “mah±r±ja, mama s±vak±na½ tumhehi saddhi½ viss±so natthi, tena na gat± bhavissant²”ti vatv± kul±na½ anupagamanak±raºañca upagamanak±raºañca pak±sento bhikkh³ ±mantetv± ima½ suttam±ha–
“Navahi, bhikkhave, aªgehi samann±gata½ kula½ anupagantv± v± n±la½ upagantu½, upagantv± v± n±la½ upanis²ditu½. Katamehi navahi? Na man±pena paccuµµhenti, na man±pena abhiv±denti, na man±pena ±sana½ denti, santamassa pariguhanti, bahukampi thoka½ denti, paº²tampi l³kha½ denti, asakkacca½ denti no sakkacca½, na upanis²danti dhammassavan±ya, bh±sitamassa na suss³santi Imehi kho, bhikkhave, navahaªgehi samann±gata½ kula½ anupagantv± v± n±la½ upagantu½, upagantv± v± n±la½ upanis²ditu½.
“Navahi, bhikkhave, aªgehi samann±gata½ kula½ anupagantv± v± ala½ upagantu½, upagantv± v± ala½ upanis²ditu½. Katamehi navahi? Man±pena paccuµµhenti, man±pena abhiv±denti, man±pena ±sana½ denti, santamassa na pariguhanti, bahukampi bahuka½ denti, paº²tampi paº²ta½ denti, sakkacca½ denti no asakkacca½, upanis²danti dhammassavan±ya, bh±sitamassa suss³santi. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, navahaªgehi samann±gata½ kula½ anupagantv± v± ala½ upagantu½, upagantv± v± ala½ upanis²ditun”ti (a. ni. 9.17).
Iti kho, mah±r±ja, mama s±vak± tumh±ka½ santik± viss±sa½ alabhant± na gat± bhavissant²ti. Por±ºakapaº¹it±pi hi aviss±sikaµµh±ne sakkacca½ upaµµhiyam±n±pi m±raºantika½ vedana½ patv± viss±sikaµµh±nameva agami½s³ti. “Kad±, bhante”ti raññ± puµµho at²ta½ ±hari–
At²te b±r±ºasiya½ brahmadatte rajja½ k±rente kesavo n±ma r±j± rajja½ pah±ya isipabbajja½ pabbaji. Ta½ pañca purisasat±ni anupabbaji½su. So kesavat±paso n±ma ahosi. Pas±dhanakappako panassa anupabbajitv± kappako n±ma antev±siko ahosi. Kesavat±paso paris±ya saddhi½ aµµha m±se himavante vasitv± vass±rattasamaye loºambilasevanatth±ya b±r±ºasi½ patv± bhikkh±ya p±visi. Atha na½ r±j± disv± pas²ditv± catum±sa½ attano santike vasanatth±ya paµiñña½ gahetv± uyy±neva vas±pento saya½ s±ya½p±ta½ assa upaµµh±na½ gacchati. Avases± t±pas± katip±ha½ vasitv± hatthisadd±d²hi ubb±¼h± hutv± ukkaºµhitv±, “±cariya, ukkaºµhitamh±, gacch±m±”ti ±ha½su. “Kaha½, t±t±”ti? “Himavanta½, ±cariy±”ti. R±j± amh±ka½ ±gatadivaseyeva catum±sa½ idha vasanatth±ya paµiñña½ gaºhi. “Katha½ gamissatha, t±t±”ti? “Tumhehi amh±ka½ an±cikkhitv±va paµiññ± dinn±, maya½ idha na sakkoma vasitu½, ito avid³re tumh±ka½ pavattissavanaµµh±ne vasiss±m±”ti vanditv± pakkami½su. Kappantev±sikena saddhi½ ±cariyo oh²yi.
R±j± upaµµh±na½ ±gato, “kaha½, ayy±”ti pucchi. “Sabbe ukkaºµhitamh±ti vatv± himavanta½ gat±, mah±r±j±”ti ±ha. Kappakopi na cirasseva ukkaºµhitv± ±cariyena punappuna½ v±riyam±nopi “na sakkom²”ti vatv± pakk±mi. Itaresa½ pana santika½ agantv± ±cariyassa pavatti½ suºanto avid³re µh±ne vasi. Aparabh±ge ±cariyassa antev±sike anussarantassa kucchirogo uppajji. R±j± vejjehi tikicch±pesi, rogo na v³pasammati. T±paso ±ha– “ki½, mah±r±ja, icchasi me rogav³pasaman”ti? “Bhante, sac±ha½ sakkuºeyya½, id±neva vo ph±suka½ kareyyan”ti. “Mah±r±ja, sace me ph±suka½ icchasi, ma½ antev±sik±na½ santika½ peseh²”ti. R±j± “s±dhu bhante”ti ta½ mañcake nipajj±petv± n±rada-amaccappamukhe catt±ro amacce “mama ayyassa pavatti½ ñatv±, mayha½ s±sana½ pahiºeyy±th±”ti uyyojesi. Kappantev±siko ±cariyassa ±gamana½ sutv± paccuggamana½ katv± itare “kahan”ti vutte, “asukaµµh±ne kira vasant²”ti ±ha. Tepi ±cariyass±gamanabh±va½ sutv± tattheva samosaritv± ±cariyassa uºhodaka½ datv± phal±phala½ ada½su. Ta½ khaºaññeva rogo v³pasammati. So katip±heneva suvaººavaººo ahosi. Atha na½ n±rado pucchi–
“Manussinda½ jahitv±na, sabbak±masamiddhina½;
katha½ nu bhagav± kes², kappassa ramati assame.
“S±d³ni ramaº²y±ni, santi vakkh± manoram±;
subh±sit±ni kappassa, n±rada ramayanti ma½.
“S±l²na½ odana½ bhuñje, suci½ ma½s³pasecana½;
katha½ s±m±kan²v±ra½, aloºa½ ch±dayanti ta½.
“S±du½ v± yadi v±s±du½, appa½ v± yadi v± bahu½;
vissattho yattha bhuñjeyya, viss±saparam± ras±”ti. (J±. 1.4.181-184).
Satth± ima½ dhammadesana½ ±haritv± j±taka½ samodh±nento “tad± r±j± moggall±no ahosi, n±rado s±riputto, kappantev±siko ±nando, kesavat±paso ahamev±”ti vatv±, “eva½, mah±r±ja, pubbepi paº¹it± m±raºantika½ vedana½ patv± viss±sikaµµh±na½ gami½su, mama s±vak± tumh±ka½ santike viss±sa½ na labhanti maññe”ti ±ha. R±j± “bhikkhusaªghena saddhi½ may± viss±sa½ k±tu½ vaµµati, katha½ nu kho kariss±m²ti samm±sambuddhassa ñ±tidh²tara½ mama gehe k±tu½ vaµµati, eva½ sante ‘dahar± ca s±maºer± ca samm±sambuddhassa ñ±tir±j±’ti mama santika½ vissatth± nibaddha½ ±gamissant²”ti cintetv±– “eka½ me dh²tara½ dent³”ti s±kiy±na½ santika½ s±sana½ pesesi. “Katarassa sakyassa dh²t±”ti ca pucchitv±, “ñatv± ±gaccheyy±th±”ti vatv± d³te ±º±pesi. D³t± gantv± s±kiye d±rika½ y±ci½su. Te sannipatitv±, “pakkhantariko r±j±, sace na dass±ma, vin±sessati no, na kho pana amhehi kulena sadiso, ki½ nu kho k±tabban”ti mantayi½su. Mah±n±mo “mama d±siy± kucchimhi j±t± v±sabhakhattiy± n±ma dh²t± r³pasobhaggappatt± atthi, ta½ dass±m±”ti vatv± d³te ±ha– “s±dhu, rañño d±rika½ dass±m±”ti. “S± kassa, dh²t±”ti? “Samm±sambuddhassa c³¼apituputtassa mah±n±massa sakkassa dh²t± v±sabhakhattiy± n±m±”ti.
Te gantv± rañño ±rocayi½su. R±j± “yadi eva½, s±dhu, s²gha½ ±netha, khattiy± ca n±ma bahum±y±, d±sidh²tarampi pahiºeyyu½, pitar± saddhi½ ekabh±jane bhuñjanti½ ±neyy±th±”ti pesesi. Te gantv±, “deva, tumhehi saddhi½ ekato bhuñjanti½ r±j± icchat²”ti ±ha½su. Mah±n±mo “s±dhu, t±t±”ti ta½ alaªk±r±petv± attano bhojanak±le pakkos±petv± t±ya saddhi½ ekato bhuñjan±k±ra½ dassetv± d³t±na½ niyy±desi. Te ta½ ±d±ya s±vatthi½ gantv± ta½ pavatti½ rañño ±rocesu½. R±j± tuµµham±naso ta½ pañcanna½ itthisat±na½ jeµµhika½ katv± aggamahesiµµh±ne abhisiñci. S± na cirasseva suvaººavaººa½ putta½ vij±yi.
