Appam±dena maghav±ti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± ves±liya½ upaniss±ya k³µ±g±ras±l±ya½ viharanto sakka½ devar±j±na½ ±rabbha kathesi.
Ves±liyañhi mah±li n±ma licchav² vasati, so tath±gatassa sakkapañhasuttantadesana½ (d². ni. 2.344 ±dayo) sutv± “samm±sambuddho sakkasampatti½ mahati½ katv± kathesi, ‘disv± nu kho kathesi, ud±hu adisv±. J±n±ti nu kho sakka½, ud±hu no’ti pucchiss±mi nan”ti cintesi. Atha kho, mah±li, licchav² yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami, upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di, ekamanta½ nisinno kho, mah±li, licchav² bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “diµµho kho, bhante, bhagavat± sakko dev±namindo”ti? “Diµµho kho me mah±li, sakko dev±namindo”ti. “So hi nuna, bhante, sakkapatir³pako bhavissati Duddaso hi, bhante, sakko dev±namindo”ti. “Sakkañca khv±ha½, mah±li, paj±n±mi sakkakaraºe ca dhamme, yesa½ dhamm±na½ sam±dinnatt± sakko sakkatta½ ajjhag±, tañca paj±n±mi”.
Sakko, mah±li, dev±namindo pubbe manussabh³to sam±no magho n±ma m±ºavo ahosi, tasm± “maghav±”ti vuccati.
Sakko, mah±li, dev±namindo pubbe manussabh³to sam±no pure d±na½ ad±si, tasm± “purindado”ti vuccati.
Sakko, mah±li, dev±namindo pubbe manussabh³to sam±no sakkacca½ d±na½ ad±si, tasm± “sakko”ti vuccati.
Sakko, mah±li, dev±namindo pubbe manussabh³to sam±no ±vasatha½ ad±si, tasm± “v±savo”ti vuccati.
Sakko, mah±li, dev±namindo sahassampi attha½ muhuttena cinteti, tasm± “sahassakkho”ti vuccati.
Sakkassa, mah±li, dev±namindassa suj± n±ma asurakaññ±, paj±pati, tasm± “sujampat²”ti vuccati.
Sakko, mah±li, dev±namindo dev±na½ t±vati½s±na½ issariy±dhipacca½ rajja½ k±reti, tasm± “dev±namindo”ti vuccati.
Sakkassa, mah±li, dev±namindassa pubbe manussabh³tassa satta vatapad±ni samatt±ni sam±dinn±ni ahesu½, yesa½ sam±dinnatt± sakko sakkatta½ ajjhag±. Katam±ni satta vatapad±ni? Y±vaj²va½ m±t±pettibharo assa½, y±vaj²va½ kule jeµµh±pac±y² assa½, y±vaj²va½ saºhav±co assa½, y±vaj²va½ apisuºav±co assa½, y±vaj²va½ vigatamalamaccherena cetas± ag±ra½ ajjh±vaseyya½, muttac±go payatap±ºi vosaggarato y±cayogo d±nasa½vibh±garato assa½. Y±vaj²va½ saccav±co assa½, y±vaj²va½ akkodhano assa½, “sacepi me kodho uppajjeyya, khippameva na paµivineyyan”ti. Sakkassa, mah±li, dev±namindassa pubbe manussabh³tassa im±ni satta vatapad±ni samatt±ni sam±dinn±ni ahesu½, yesa½ sam±dinnatt± sakko sakkatta½ ajjhag±ti.
“M±t±pettibhara½ jantu½, kule jeµµh±pac±yina½;
saºha½ sakhilasambh±sa½, pesuºeyyappah±yina½.
“Maccheravinaye yutta½, sacca½ kodh±bhibhu½ nara½;
ta½ ve dev± t±vati½s±, ±hu sappuriso it²”ti. (Sa½. ni. 1.257)–

Ida½, mah±li, sakkena magham±ºavak±le katakammanti vatv± puna tena “katha½, bhante, magham±ºavo paµipajj²”ti? Tassa paµipatti½ vitth±rato sotuk±mena puµµho “tena hi, mah±li, suº±h²”ti vatv± at²ta½ ±hari–

At²te magadharaµµhe macalag±me magho n±ma m±ºavo g±makammakaraºaµµh±na½ gantv± attano µhitaµµh±na½ p±dantena pa½su½ viy³hitv± ramaº²ya½ katv± aµµh±si. Aparo ta½ b±hun± paharitv± tato apanetv± saya½ tattha aµµh±si. So tassa akujjhitv±va añña½ µh±na½ ramaº²ya½ katv± µhito. Tatopi na½ añño ±gantv± b±hun± paharitv± apanetv± saya½ aµµh±si. So tassapi akujjhitv±va añña½ µh±na½ ramaº²ya½ katv± µhito, iti ta½ gehato nikkhant± nikkhant± puris± b±hun± paharitv± µhitaµhitaµµh±nato apanesu½. So “sabbepete ma½ niss±ya sukhit± j±t±, imin± kammena mayha½ sukhad±yakena puññakammena bhavitabban”ti cintetv±, punadivase kud±la½ ±d±ya khalamaº¹alamatta½ µh±na½ ramaº²ya½ ak±si. Sabbe gantv± tattheva aµµha½su. Atha nesa½ s²tasamaye aggi½ katv± ad±si, gimhak±le udaka½. Tato “ramaº²ya½ µh±na½ n±ma sabbesa½ piya½, kassaci appiya½ n±ma natthi, ito paµµh±ya may± magga½ sama½ karontena vicaritu½ vaµµat²”ti cintetv±, p±tova nikkhamitv±, magga½ sama½ karonto chinditv±, haritabbayuttak± rukkhas±kh± haranto vicarati. Atha na½ aparo disv± ±ha– “samma, ki½ karos²”ti? “Mayha½ saggag±mina½ magga½ karomi, samm±”ti. “Tena hi ahampi te sah±yo hom²”ti. “Hohi, samma, saggo n±ma bah³nampi man±po sukhabahulo”ti. Tato paµµh±ya dve jan± ahesu½. Te disv± tatheva pucchitv± ca sutv± ca aparopi tesa½ sah±yo j±to, eva½ aparopi aparop²ti sabbepi tetti½sa jan± j±t±. Te sabbepi kud±l±dihatth± magga½ sama½ karont± ekayojanadviyojanamattaµµh±na½ gacchanti.
Te disv± g±mabhojako cintesi– “ime manuss± ayoge yutt±, sace ime araññato macchama½s±d²ni v± ±hareyyu½. Sura½ v± katv± piveyyu½, añña½ v± t±disa½ kamma½ kareyyu½, ahampi kiñci kiñci labheyyan”ti. Atha ne pakkos±petv± pucchi– “ki½ karont± vicarath±”ti? “Saggamagga½, s±m²”ti. “Ghar±v±sa½ vasantehi n±ma eva½ k±tu½ na vaµµati, araññato macchama½s±d²ni ±haritu½, sura½ katv± p±tu½, n±nappak±re ca kammante k±tu½ vaµµat²”ti. Te tassa vacana½ paµikkhipi½su, eva½ punappuna½ vuccam±n±pi paµikkhipi½suyeva. So kujjhitv± “n±sess±mi ne”ti rañño santika½ gantv±, “core te, deva, vaggabandhanena vicarante pass±m²”ti vatv±, “gaccha, te gahetv± ±neh²”ti vutte tath± katv± sabbe te bandhitv± ±netv± rañño dassesi. R±j± av²ma½sitv±va “hatthin± madd±peth±”ti ±º±pesi. Magho ses±na½ ov±damad±si– “samm±, µhapetv± metta½ añño amh±ka½ avassayo natthi, tumhe katthaci kopa½ akatv± raññe ca g±mabhojake ca maddanahatthimhi ca attani ca mettacittena samacitt±va hoth±”ti. Te tath± kari½su. Atha nesa½ mett±nubh±vena hatth² uppasaªkamitumpi na visahi. R±j± tamattha½ sutv± bah³ manusse disv± madditu½ na visahissati? “Gacchatha, ne kilañjena paµicch±detv± madd±peth±”ti ±ha. Te kilañjena paµicch±detv± madditu½ pesiyam±nopi hatth² d³ratova paµikkami.
R±j± ta½ pavatti½ sutv± “k±raºenettha bhavitabban”ti te pakkos±petv± pucchi– “t±t±, ma½ niss±ya tumhe ki½ na labhath±”ti? “Ki½ n±meta½, dev±”ti? “Tumhe kira vaggabandhanena cor± hutv± araññe vicarath±”ti? “Ko evam±ha, dev±”ti? “G±mabhojako, t±t±”ti. “Na maya½, deva, cor±, maya½ pana attano saggamagga½ sodhent± idañcidañca karoma, g±mabhojako amhe akusalakiriy±ya niyojetv± attano vacana½ akaronte n±setuk±mo kujjhitv± evam±h±”ti. Atha r±j± tesa½ katha½ sutv± somanassappatto hutv±, “t±t±, aya½ tiracch±no tumh±ka½ guºe j±n±ti, aha½ manussabh³to j±nitu½ n±sakkhi½, khamatha me”ti. Evañca pana vatv± saputtad±ra½ g±mabhojaka½ tesa½ d±sa½, hatthi½ ±rohaniya½, tañca g±ma½ yath±sukha½ paribhoga½ katv± ad±si. Te “idheva no katapuññass±nisa½so diµµho”ti bhiyyosomatt±ya pasannam±nas± hutv± ta½ hatthi½ v±rena v±rena abhiruyha gacchant± mantayi½su “id±ni amhehi atirekatara½ puñña½ k±tabba½, ki½ karoma? Catumah±pathe th±vara½ katv± mah±janassa vissamanas±la½ kariss±m±”ti. Te va¹¹haki½ pakkos±petv± s±la½ paµµhapesu½. M±tug±mesu pana vigatacchandat±ya tass± s±l±ya m±tug±m±na½ patti½ n±da½su.
Maghassa pana gehe nand±, citt±, sudhamm±, suj±ti catasso itthiyo honti. T±su sudhamm± va¹¹hakin± saddhi½ ekato hutv±, “bh±tika, imiss± s±l±ya ma½ jeµµhika½ karoh²”ti vatv± lañja½ ad±si. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± paµhamameva kaººikatth±ya rukkha½ sukkh±petv± tacchetv± vijjhitv± kaººika½ niµµh±petv±, “sudhamm± n±ma aya½ s±l±”ti akkhar±ni chinditv± vatthena paliveµhetv± µhapesi. Atha ne va¹¹hak² s±la½ niµµh±petv± kaººik±ropanadivase “aho, ayy±, eka½ karaº²ya½ na sarimh±”ti ±ha. “Ki½ n±ma, bho”ti? “Kaººikan”ti. “Hotu ta½ ±hariss±m±”ti. “Id±ni chinnarukkhena k±tu½ na sakk±, pubbeyeva ta½ chinditv± tacchetv± vijjhitv± µhapitakaººik± laddhu½ vaµµat²”ti. “Id±ni ki½ k±tabban”ti? “Sace kassaci gehe niµµh±petv± µhapit± vikk±yikakaººik± atthi, s± pariyesitabb±”ti. Te pariyesant± sudhamm±ya gehe disv± sahassa½ datv±pi m³lena na labhi½su. “Sace ma½ s±l±ya patti½ karotha, dass±m²”ti vutte pana “maya½ m±tug±m±na½ patti½ na damm±”ti ±ha½su.
Atha ne va¹¹hak² ±ha– “ayy±, tumhe ki½ kathetha, µhapetv± brahmaloka½ añña½ m±tug±marahitaµµh±na½ n±ma natthi, gaºhatha kaººika½. Eva½ sante amh±ka½ kamma½ niµµha½ gamissat²”ti. Te “s±dh³”ti kaººika½ gahetv± s±la½ niµµh±petv± tidh± vibhaji½su. Ekasmi½ koµµh±se issar±na½ vasanaµµh±na½ kari½su, ekasmi½ duggat±na½, ekasmi½ gil±n±na½. Tetti½sa jan± tetti½sa phalak±ni paññapetv± hatthissa sañña½ ada½su– “±gantuko ±gantv± yassa atthataphalake nis²dati, ta½ gahetv± phalakas±mikasseva gehe patiµµhapehi, tassa p±daparikammapiµµhiparikammap±n²yakh±dan²yabhojan²yasayan±ni sabb±ni phalakas±mikasseva bh±ro bhavissat²”ti. Hatth² ±gat±gata½ gahetv± phalakas±mikasseva ghara½ neti. So tassa ta½ divasa½ kattabba½ karoti. Magho s±l±ya avid³re kovi¼±rarukkha½ ropetv± tassa m³le p±s±ºaphalaka½ atthari. S±la½ paviµµhapaviµµh± jan± kaººika½ oloketv± akkhar±ni v±cetv±, “sudhamm± n±mes± s±l±”ti vadanti. Tetti½sajan±na½ n±ma½ na paññ±yati. Nand± cintesi– “ime s±la½ karont± amhe apattik± kari½su, sudhamm± pana attano byattat±ya kaººika½ katv± pattik± j±t±, may±pi kiñci k±tu½ vaµµati, ki½ nu kho kariss±m²”ti? Athass± etadahosi “s±la½ ±gat±gat±na½ p±n²yañceva nh±nodakañca laddhu½ vaµµati, pokkharaºi½ khaº±pess±m²”ti. S± pokkharaºi½ k±resi. Citt± cintesi– “sudhamm±ya kaººik± dinn±, nand±ya pokkharaº² k±rit±, may±pi kiñci k±tu½ vaµµati, ki½ nu kho kariss±m²”ti? Athass± etadahosi– “s±la½ ±gat±gatehi p±n²ya½ pivitv± nhatv± gamanak±lepi m±la½ pilandhitv± gantu½ vaµµati, pupph±r±ma½ k±r±pess±m²”ti. S± ramaº²ya½ pupph±r±ma½ k±resi. Yebhuyyena tasmi½ ±r±me “asuko n±ma pupph³pagaphal³pagarukkho natth²”ti n±hosi.
Suj± pana “aha½ maghassa m±tuladh²t± ceva p±daparic±rik± ca, etena kata½ kamma½ mayhameva, may± kata½ etassev±”ti cintetv±, kiñci akatv± attabh±vameva maº¹ayam±n± k±la½ v²tin±mesi. Maghopi m±t±pitu-upaµµh±na½ kule jeµµh±pac±yanakamma½ saccav±ca½ apharusav±ca½ api, suºav±ca½ maccheravinaya½ akkodhananti im±ni satta vatapad±ni p³retv±–
