R±jagahe kira dhanaseµµhikulassa dh²t± vayappattak±le m±t±pit³hi sattabh³mikassa p±s±dassa uparimatale ativiya rakkhiyam±n± yobbanamadamattat±ya purisalol± hutv± attano d±seneva saddhi½ santhava½ katv±, “aññepi me ida½ kamma½ j±neyyun”ti bh²t± evam±ha– “amhehi imasmi½ µh±ne na sakk± vasitu½. Sace me m±t±pitaro ima½ dosa½ j±nissanti, khaº¹±khaº¹ika½ ma½ karissanti. Videsa½ gantv± vasiss±m±”ti. Te hatthas±ra½ gahetv± aggadv±rena nikkhamitv±, “yattha v± tattha v± aññehi aj±nanaµµh±na½ gantv± vasiss±m±”ti ubhopi agama½su. Tesa½ ekasmi½ µh±ne vasant±na½ sa½v±samanv±ya tass± kucchismi½ gabbho patiµµh±si. S± gabbhaparip±ka½ ±gamma tena saddhi½ mantesi, “gabbho me parip±ka½ gato, ñ±tibandhuvirahite µh±ne gabbhavuµµh±na½ n±ma ubhinnampi amh±ka½ dukkh±vaha½, kulagehameva gacch±m±”ti. So “sac±ha½ tattha gamiss±mi, j²vita½ me natth²”ti bhayena “ajja gacch±ma, sve gacch±m±”ti divase atikk±mesi. S± cintesi– “aya½ b±lo attano dosamahantat±ya gantu½ na ussahati, m±t±pitaro n±ma ekantahit±va, aya½ gacchatu v±, m± v±, aha½ gamiss±m²”ti. S± tasmi½ geh± nikkhante gehaparikkh±ra½ paµis±metv± attano kulaghara½ gatabh±va½ anantaragehav±s²na½ ±rocetv± magga½ paµipajji.
Sopi ghara½ ±gantv± ta½ adisv± paµivissake pucchitv±, “s± kulaghara½ gat±”ti sutv± vegena anubandhitv± antar±magge samp±puºi. Tass±pi tattheva gabbhavuµµh±na½ ahosi. So “ki½ ida½, bhadde”ti pucchi. “S±mi, me eko putto j±to”ti. “Id±ni ki½ kariss±m±”ti? “Yassatth±ya maya½ kulaghara½ gaccheyy±ma, ta½ kamma½ antar±maggeva nipphanna½, tattha gantv± ki½ kariss±ma, nivattiss±m±”ti dvepi ekacitt± hutv± nivatti½su. Tassa ca d±rakassa panthe j±tatt± panthakoti n±ma½ kari½su. Tass± nacirasseva aparopi gabbho patiµµhahi. Sabba½ purimanayeneva vitth±retabba½. Tassapi d±rakassa panthe j±tatt± paµhamaj±tassa mah±panthakoti n±ma½ katv± itarassa c³¼apanthakoti n±ma½ kari½su. Te dvepi d±rake gahetv± attano vasanaµµh±nameva gat±. Tesa½ tattha vasant±na½ mah±panthakad±rako aññe d±rake “c³¼apit± mah±pit±ti, ayyako ayyik±”ti ca vadante sutv± m±tara½ pucchi– “amma, aññe d±rak± ‘ayyako ayyik±’tipi, ‘mah±pit± c³¼apit±’tipi vadanti, kacci amh±kaññeva ñ±tak± natth²”ti? “¾ma, t±ta, amh±ka½ ettha ñ±tak± natthi. R±jagahanagare pana vo dhanaseµµhi n±ma ayyako, tattha amh±ka½ bah³ ñ±tak±”ti. “Kasm± tattha na gacchatha, amm±”ti? S± attano agamanak±raºa½ puttassa akathetv± puttesu punappuna½ kathentesu s±mika½ ±ha– “ime d±rak± ma½ ativiya kilamenti, ki½ no m±t±pitaro disv± ma½sa½ kh±dissanti, ehi, d±rak±na½ ayyakakula½ dassess±m±”ti? “Aha½ sammukh± bhavitu½ na sakkhiss±mi, te pana nayiss±m²”ti. “S±dhu yena kenaci up±yena d±rak±na½ ayyakakulameva daµµhu½ vaµµat²”ti. Dvepi jan± d±rake ±d±ya anupubbena r±jagaha½ patv± nagaradv±re ekiss± s±l±ya pavisitv± d±rakam±t± dve d±rake gahetv± attano ±gatabh±va½ m±t±pit³na½ ±roc±pesi. Te ta½ s±sana½ sutv±, “sa½s±re vicarant±na½ na putto na dh²t± bh³tapubb± n±ma natthi, te amh±ka½ mah±par±dhik±, na sakk± tehi amh±ka½ cakkhupathe µh±tu½, ettaka½ n±ma dhana½ gahetv± dvepi jan± ph±sukaµµh±na½ gantv± j²vantu, d±rake pana idha pesent³”ti dhana½ datv± d³ta½ p±hesu½.
Tehi pesita½ dhana½ gahetv± d±rake ±gatad³t±naññeva hatthe datv± pahiºi½su. D±rak± ayyakakule va¹¹hanti. Tesu c³¼apanthako atidaharo, mah±panthako pana ayyakena saddhi½ dasabalassa dhammakatha½ sotu½ gacchati. Tassa nicca½ satthu santika½ gacchantassa pabbajj±ya citta½ nami. So ayyaka½ ±ha– “sace ma½ anuj±neyy±tha, aha½ pabbajeyyan”ti “Ki½ vadesi, t±ta, sakalassa lokassapi me pabbajj±to tava pabbajj± bhaddik±. Sace sakkosi pabbaj±h²”ti. Ta½ satthu santika½ netv±, “ki½, gahapati, d±rako te laddho”ti vutte, “±ma, bhante, aya½ me natt± tumh±ka½ santike pabbajituk±mo”ti ±ha. Satth± aññatara½ piº¹ap±tac±rika½ bhikkhu½ “ima½ d±raka½ pabb±jeh²”ti ±º±pesi. Thero tassa tacapañcakakammaµµh±na½ ±cikkhitv± pabb±jesi. So bahu½ buddhavacana½ uggaºhitv± paripuººavasso upasampada½ labhitv± yonisomanasik±rena kammaµµh±na½ karonto arahatta½ p±puºi. So jh±nasukhena phalasukhena v²tin±mento cintesi– “sakk± nu kho ida½ sukha½ c³¼apanthakassa d±tun”ti! Tato ayyakaseµµhissa santika½ gantv± evam±ha– “mah±seµµhi, sace anuj±neyy±tha, aha½ c³¼apanthaka½ pabb±jeyyan”ti. “Pabb±jetha, bhante”ti. Seµµhi kira s±sane ca suppasanno, “kataradh²t±ya vo ete putt±”ti pucchiyam±no ca “pal±tadh²t±y±”ti vattu½ lajjati, tasm± sukheneva tesa½ pabbajja½ anuj±ni. Thero c³¼apanthaka½ pabb±jetv± s²lesu patiµµh±pesi. So pabbajitv±va dandho ahosi.
“Padma½ yath± kokanada½ sugandha½,
p±to siy± phullamav²tagandha½;
aªg²rasa½ passa virocam±na½,
tapantam±diccamivantalikkhe”ti. (Sa½. ni. 1.123; a. ni. 5.195)–

Ima½ eka½ g±tha½ cat³hi m±sehi uggaºhitu½ n±sakkhi. So kira kassapasamm±sambuddhak±le pabbajitv± paññav± hutv± aññatarassa dandhabhikkhuno uddesaggahaºak±le parih±sake¼i½ ak±si. So bhikkhu tena parih±sena lajjito neva uddesa½ gaºhi, na sajjh±yamak±si. Tena kammena aya½ pabbajitv±va dandho j±to, gahitagahita½ pada½ upar³paripada½ gaºhantassa nassati. Tassa imameva g±tha½ uggahetu½ v±yamantassa catt±ro m±s± atikkant±. Atha na½ mah±panthako, “c³¼apanthaka, tva½ imasmi½ s±sane abhabbo, cat³hi m±sehi eka½ g±thampi gaºhitu½ na sakkosi, pabbajitakicca½ pana katha½ matthaka½ p±pessasi, nikkhama ito”ti vih±r± nikka¹¹hi. C³¼apanthako buddhas±sane sinehena gihibh±va½ na pattheti.

Tasmiñca k±le mah±panthako bhattuddesako ahosi. J²vako kom±rabhacco bahu½ m±l±gandhavilepana½ ±d±ya attano ambavana½ gantv± satth±ra½ p³jetv± dhamma½ sutv± uµµh±y±san± dasabala½ vanditv± mah±panthaka½ upasaªkamitv±, “kittak± bhante, satthu santike bhikkh³”ti pucchi. “Pañcamatt±ni bhikkhusat±n²”ti. “Sve, bhante, buddhappamukh±ni pañca bhikkhusat±ni ±d±ya amh±ka½ nivesane bhikkha½ gaºhath±”ti. “Up±saka, c³¼apanthako n±ma bhikkhu dandho aviru¼hidhammo, ta½ µhapetv± ses±na½ nimantana½ sampaµicch±m²”ti thero ±ha. Ta½ sutv± c³¼apanthako cintesi– “thero ettak±na½ bhikkh³na½ nimantana½ sampaµicchanto ma½ b±hira½ katv± sampaµicchati, nissa½saya½ mayha½ bh±tikassa mayi citta½ bhinna½ bhavissati, ki½ d±ni mayha½ imin± s±sanena, gih² hutv± d±n±d²ni puññ±ni karonto j²viss±m²”ti? So punadivase p±tova vibbhamitu½ p±y±si.
Satth± pacc³sak±leyeva loka½ volokento ima½ k±raºa½ disv± paµhamatara½ gantv± c³¼apanthakassa gamanamagge dv±rakoµµhake caªkamanto aµµh±si. C³¼apanthako gacchanto satth±ra½ disv± upasaªkamitv± vanditv± aµµh±si. Atha na½ satth± “kuhi½ pana tva½, c³¼apanthaka, im±ya vel±ya gacchas²”ti ±ha. “Bh±t± ma½, bhante, nikka¹¹hati, ten±ha½ vibbhamitu½ gacch±m²”ti. “C³¼apanthaka, tava pabbajj± n±ma mama santak±, bh±tar± nikka¹¹hito kasm± mama santika½ n±gañchi, ehi, ki½ te gihibh±vena, mama santike bhavissas²”ti cakkaªkitatalena p±ºin± ta½ sirasi par±masitv± ±d±ya gantv± gandhakuµippamukhe nis²d±petv±, “c³¼apanthaka, puratth±bhimukho hutv± ima½ pilotika½ ‘rajoharaºa½ rajoharaºan’ti parimajjanto idheva hoh²”ti iddhiy± abhisaªkhata½ parisuddha½ pilotika½ datv± k±le ±rocite bhikkhusaªghaparivuto j²vakassa geha½ gantv± paññatt±sane nis²di. C³¼apanthakopi s³riya½ olokento ta½ pilotika½ “rajoharaºa½ rajoharaºan”ti parimajjanto nis²di. Tassa ta½ pilotikakhaº¹a½ parimajjantassa kiliµµha½ ahosi. Tato cintesi– “ida½ pilotikakhaº¹a½ ativiya parisuddha½, ima½ pana attabh±va½ niss±ya purimapakati½ vijahitv± eva½ kiliµµha½ j±ta½, anicc± vata saªkh±r±”ti khayavaya½ paµµhapento vipassana½ va¹¹hesi. Satth± “c³¼apanthakassa citta½ vipassana½ ±ru¼han”ti ñatv±, “c³¼apanthaka, tva½ pilotikakhaº¹ameva sa½kiliµµha½ ‘raja½ rajan’ti m± sañña½ kari, abbhantare pana te r±garaj±dayo atthi, te har±h²”ti vatv± obh±sa½ vissajjetv± purato nisinno viya paññ±yam±nar³po hutv± im± g±th± abh±si–
“R±go rajo na ca pana reºu vuccati,
r±gasseta½ adhivacana½ rajoti;
eta½ rajja½ vippajahitva bhikkhavo,
viharanti te vigatarajassa s±sane.
“Doso rajo na ca pana reºu vuccati,
dosasseta½ adhivacana½ rajoti;
eta½ raja½ vippajahitva bhikkhavo,
viharanti te vigatarajassa s±sane.
“Moho rajo na ca pana reºu vuccati,
mohasseta½ adhivacana½ rajoti;
eta½ raja½ vippajahitva bhikkhavo,
viharanti te vigatarajassa s±sane”ti. (Mah±ni. 209).
G±th±pariyos±ne c³¼apanthako saha paµisambhid±hi arahatta½ p±puºi. Saha paµisambhid±hiyevassa t²ºi piµak±ni ±gami½su.
So kira pubbe r±j± hutv± nagara½ padakkhiºa½ karonto nal±µato sede muccante parisuddhena s±µakena nal±µanta½ puñchi, s±µako kiliµµho ahosi. So “ima½ sar²ra½ niss±ya evar³po parisuddho s±µako pakati½ jahitv± kiliµµho j±to, anicc± vata saªkh±r±”ti aniccasañña½ paµilabhi. Te k±raºenassa rajoharaºameva paccayo j±to.
J²vakopi kho kom±rabhacco dasabalassa dakkhiºodaka½ upan±mesi. Satth± “nanu, j²vaka, vih±re bhikkh³ atth²”ti hatthena patta½ pidahi. Mah±panthako “nanu, bhante, vih±re bhikkh³ natth²”ti ±ha. Satth± “atthi, j²vak±”ti ±ha. J²vako “tena hi bhaºe gaccha, vih±re bhikkh³na½ atthibh±va½ v± natthibh±va½ v± tvaññeva j±n±h²”ti purisa½ pesesi. Tasmi½ khaºe c³¼apanthako “mayha½ bh±tiko ‘vih±re bhikkh³ natth²’ti bhaºati vih±re bhikkh³na½ atthibh±vamassa pak±sess±m²”ti sakala½ ambavana½ bhikkh³naññeva p³resi. Ekacce bhikkh³ c²varakamma½ karonti, ekacce rajanakamma½ karonti, ekacce sajjh±ya½ karonti. Eva½ aññamañña-asadisa½ bhikkhusahassa½ m±pesi. So puriso vih±re bah³ bhikkh³ disv± nivattitv±, “ayya, sakala½ ambavana½ bhikkh³hi paripuººan”ti j²vakassa ±rocesi. Theropi kho tattheva–
“Sahassakkhattumatt±na½ nimminitv±na panthako;
nis²dambavane ramme, y±va k±lappavedan±”ti.
Atha satth± ta½ purisa½ ±ha– “vih±ra½ gantv± ‘satth± c³¼apanthaka½ n±ma pakkosat²’ti vadeh²”ti. Tena gantv± tath± vutte, “aha½ c³¼apanthako, aha½ c³¼apanthako”ti mukhasahassa½ uµµhahi. So puriso puna gantv±, “sabbepi kira, bhante, c³¼apanthak±yeva n±m±”ti ±ha. “Tena hi gantv± yo ‘aha½ c³¼apanthako’ti paµhama½ vadati, ta½ hatthe gaºha, avases± antaradh±yissant²”ti. So tath± ak±si. T±vadeva sahassamatt± bhikkh³ antaradh±yi½su. Theropi tena purisena saddhi½ agam±si. Satth± bhattakiccapariyos±ne j²vaka½ ±mantesi– “j²vaka, c³¼apanthakassa patta½ gaºh±hi, aya½ te anumodana½ karissat²”ti. J²vako tath± ak±si. Thero s²han±da½ nadanto taruºas²ho viya t²hi piµakehi saªkhobhetv± anumodanamak±si. Satth± uµµh±y±san± bhikkhusaªghaparivuto vih±ra½ gantv± bhikkh³hi vatte dassite gandhakuµippamukhe µhatv± bhikkhusaªghassa sugatov±da½ datv± kammaµµh±na½ kathetv± bhikkhusaªgha½ uyyojetv± surabhigandhav±sita½ gandhakuµi½ pavisitv± dakkhiºena passena s²haseyya½ upagato. Atha s±yanhasamaye bhikkh³ ito cito ca samosaritv± rattakambalas±ºiy± parikkhitt± viya nis²ditv± satthu guºakatha½ ±rabhi½su, “±vuso, mah±panthako c³¼apanthakassa ajjh±saya½ aj±nanto cat³hi m±sehi eka½ g±tha½ uggaºh±petu½ na sakkoti, ‘dandho ayan’ti vih±r± nikka¹¹hi, samm±sambuddho pana attano anuttaradhammar±jat±ya ekasmi½yevassa antarabhatte saha paµisambhid±hi arahatta½ ad±si, t²ºi piµak±ni saha paµisambhid±hiyeva ±gat±ni, aho buddh±na½ bala½ n±ma mahantan”ti.
Atha bhagav± dhammasabh±ya½ ima½ kath±pavatti½ ñatv±, “ajja may± gantu½ vaµµat²”ti buddhaseyy±ya uµµh±ya surattadupaµµa½ niv±setv± vijjulata½ viya k±yabandhana½ bandhitv± rattakambalasadisa½ sugatamah±c²vara½ p±rupitv± surabhigandhakuµito nikkhamma mattavarav±raºas²havijambhitavil±sena anant±ya buddhal²¼±ya dhammasabha½ gantv± alaªkatamaº¹alam±¼amajjhe supaññattavarabuddh±sana½ abhiruyha chabbaººabuddhara½siyo vissajjento aººavakucchi½ khobhayam±no yugandharamatthake b±las³riyo viya ±sanamajjhe nis²di. Samm±sambuddhe pana ±gatamatte bhikkhusaªgho katha½ pacchinditv± tuºh² ahosi. Satth± mudukena mettacittena parisa½ oloketv±, “aya½ paris± ativiya sobhati, ekassapi hatthakukkucca½ v± p±dakukkucca½ v± ukk±sitasaddo v± khipitasaddo v± natthi, sabbepi ime buddhag±ravena sag±rav±, buddhatejena tajjit±. Mayi ±yukappampi akathetv± nisinne paµhama½ katha½ samuµµh±petv± na kathessanti. Kath±samuµµh±panavatta½ n±ma may±va j±nitabba½, ahameva paµhama½ kathess±m²”ti madhurena brahmassarena bhikkh³ ±mantetv±, “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±, k± ca pana vo antar±kath± vippakat±”ti pucchitv±, “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte, “na, bhikkhave, c³¼apanthako id±neva dandho, pubbepi dandhoyeva. Na kevalañcass±ha½ id±neva avassayo j±to, pubbepi avassayo ahosimeva. Pubbe pan±ha½ ima½ lokiyakuµumbassa s±mika½ ak±si½, id±ni lokuttarakuµumbass±”ti vatv± tamattha½ vitth±rato sotuk±mehi bhikkh³hi ±y±cito at²ta½ ±hari–
“At²te, bhikkhave, b±r±ºasinagarav±s² eko m±ºavo takkasila½ gantv± sippuggahaºatth±ya dis±p±mokkhassa ±cariyassa dhammantev±siko hutv± pañcanna½ m±ºavakasat±na½ antare ativiya ±cariyassa upak±rako ahosi, p±daparikamm±d²ni sabbakicc±ni karoti. Dandhat±ya pana kiñci uggaºhitu½ na sakko”ti. ¾cariyo “aya½ mama bah³pak±ro, sikkh±pess±mi nan”ti v±yamantopi kiñci sikkh±petu½ na sakkoti. So cira½ vasitv± ekag±thampi uggaºhitu½ asakkonto ukkaºµhitv± “gamiss±m²”ti ±cariya½ ±pucchi. ¾cariyo cintesi– “aya½ mayha½ upak±rako, paº¹itabh±vamassa pacc±s²s±mi, na na½ k±tu½ sakkomi avassa½ may± imassa paccupak±ro k±tabbo, ekamassa manta½ bandhitv± dass±m²”ti so ta½ arañña½ netv± “ghaµµesi ghaµµesi, ki½ k±raº± ghaµµesi? Ahampi ta½ j±n±mi j±n±m²”ti ima½ manta½ bandhitv± uggaºh±pento anekasatakkhattu½ parivatt±petv±, “paññ±yati te”ti pucchitv±, “±ma, paññ±yat²”ti vutte “dandhena n±ma v±y±ma½ katv± paguºa½ kata½ sippa½ na pal±yat²”ti cintetv± maggaparibbaya½ datv±, “gaccha, ima½ manta½ niss±ya j²vissasi, apal±yanatth±ya panassa nicca½ sajjh±ya½ kareyy±s²”ti vatv± ta½ uyyojesi. Athassa m±t± b±r±ºasiya½ sampattak±le “putto me sippa½ sikkhitv± ±gato”ti mah±sakk±rasamm±na½ ak±si.
Tad± b±r±ºasir±j± “atthi nu kho me k±yakamm±d²su koci doso”ti paccavekkhanto attano aruccanaka½ kiñci kamma½ adisv± “attano vajja½ n±ma attano na paññ±yati, paresa½ paññ±yati, n±gar±na½ pariggaºhiss±m²”ti cintetv± s±ya½ aññ±takavesena nikkhamitv±, “s±yam±sa½ bhuñjitv± nisinnamanuss±na½ kath±sall±po n±ma n±nappak±rako hoti, ‘sac±ha½ adhammena rajja½ k±remi, p±pena adhammikena raññ± daº¹abali-±d²hi hatamh±’ti vakkhanti. ‘Sace dhammena rajja½ k±remi, d²gh±yuko hotu no r±j±’ti-±d²ni vatv± mama guºa½ kathessant²”ti tesa½ tesa½ geh±na½ bhitti-anus±reneva vicarati.
Tasmi½ khaºe umaªgacor± dvinna½ geh±na½ antare umaªga½ bhindanti eka-umaªgeneva dve geh±ni pavisanatth±ya. R±j± te disv± gehacch±y±ya aµµh±si. Tesa½ umaªga½ bhinditv± geha½ pavisitv± bhaº¹aka½ olokitak±le m±ºavo pabujjhitv± ta½ manta½ sajjh±yanto “ghaµµesi ghaµµesi, ki½ k±raº± ghaµµesi? Ahampi ta½ j±n±mi j±n±m²”ti ±ha. Te ta½ sutv±, “imin± kiramh± ñ±t±, id±ni no n±sessat²”ti nivatthavatth±nipi cha¹¹etv± bh²t± sammukhasammukhaµµh±neneva pal±yi½su. R±j± te pal±yante disv± itarassa ca mantasajjh±yanasadda½ sutv± gehaññeva vavatthapetv± n±gar±na½ pariggaºhitv± nivesana½ p±visi. So vibh±t±ya pana rattiy± p±toveka½ purisa½ pakkositv± ±ha– “gaccha bhaºe, asukav²thiya½ n±ma yasmi½ gehe umaªgo bhinno, tattha takkasilato sippa½ uggaºhitv± ±gatam±ºavo atthi, ta½ ±neh²”ti. So gantv± “r±j± ta½ pakkosat²”ti vatv± m±ºava½ ±nesi. Atha na½ r±j± ±ha– “tva½, t±ta, takkasilato sippa½ uggaºhitv± ±gatam±ºavo”ti? “¾ma, dev±”ti. “Amh±kampi ta½ sippa½ deh²”ti. “S±dhu, deva, sam±n±sane nis²ditv± gaºh±h²”ti. R±j±pi tath± katv± manta½ gahetv± “aya½ te ±cariyabh±go”ti sahassa½ ad±si.
Tad± sen±pati rañño kappaka½ ±ha– “kad± rañño massu½ karissas²”ti? “Sve v± parasuve v±”ti. So tassa sahassa½ datv± “kicca½ me atth²”ti vatv±, “ki½, s±m²”ti vutte “rañño massukamma½ karonto viya hutv± khura½ ativiya paha½sitv± galan±¼i½ chinda, tva½ sen±pati bhavissasi, aha½ r±j±”ti. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± rañño massukammakaraºadivase gandhodakena massu½ temetv± khura½ paha½sitv± nal±µante gahetv±, “khuro thoka½ kuºµhadh±ro, ekappah±reneva galan±¼i½ chinditu½ vaµµat²”ti puna ekamanta½ µhatv± khura½ paha½si. Tasmi½ khaºe r±j± attano manta½ saritv± sajjh±ya½ karonto “ghaµµesi ghaµµesi, ki½ k±raº± ghaµµesi? Ahampi ta½ j±n±mi j±n±m²”ti ±ha. Nh±pitassa nal±µato sed± mucci½su. R±j±no n±ma chek± honti, tena ta½ evam±ha– “are, duµµha, nh±pita, ‘na ma½ r±j± j±n±t²’ti sañña½ karos²”ti. “Abhaya½ me dehi, dev±”ti. “Hotu, m± bh±yi, katheh²”ti. Sen±pati me, deva, sahassa½ datv±, “rañño massu½ karonto viya galan±¼i½ chinda, aha½ r±j± hutv± ta½ sen±pati½ kariss±m²”ti ±h±ti. R±j± ta½ sutv± “±cariya½ me niss±ya j²vita½ laddhan”ti cintetv± sen±pati½ pakkos±petv±, “ambho, sen±pati, ki½ n±ma tay± mama santik± na laddha½, id±ni ta½ daµµhu½ na sakkomi, mama raµµh± nikkham±h²”ti ta½ raµµh± pabb±jetv± ±cariya½ pakkos±petv±, “±cariya, ta½ niss±ya may± j²vita½ laddhan”ti vatv± mahanta½ sakk±ra½ karitv± tassa sen±patiµµh±na½ ad±si. “So tad± c³¼apanthako ahosi, satth± dis±p±mokkho ±cariyo”ti.
Satth± ima½ at²ta½ ±haritv±, “eva½, bhikkhave, pubbepi c³¼apanthako dandhoyeva ahosi, tad±piss±ha½ avassayo hutv± ta½ lokiyakuµumbe patiµµh±pesin”ti vatv± puna ekadivasa½ “aho satth± c³¼apanthakassa avassayo j±to”ti kath±ya samuµµhit±ya c³¼aseµµhij±take at²tavatthu½ kathetv±–
“Appaken±pi medh±v², p±bhatena vicakkhaºo;

Punekadivasa½ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½, “±vuso, c³¼apanthako cat³hi m±sehi catuppada½ g±tha½ gahetu½ asakkontopi v²riya½ anossajjitv±va arahatte patiµµhito id±ni lokuttaradhammakuµumbassa s±miko j±to”ti. Satth± ±gantv±, “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv±, “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte, “bhikkhave, mama s±sane ±raddhav²riyo bhikkhu lokuttaradhammassa s±miko hotiyev±”ti vatv± ima½ g±tham±ha–

d²pa½ kayir±tha medh±v², ya½ ogho n±bhik²rat²”ti.
Tattha d²pa½ kayir±th±ti v²riyasaªkh±tena uµµh±nena, satiy± avippav±s±k±rasaªkh±tena appam±dena, catup±risuddhis²lasaªkh±tena sa½yamena, indriyadamena c±ti imehi k±raºabh³tehi cat³hi dhammehi dhammojapaññ±ya samann±gato medh±v² imasmi½ ativiya dullabhapatiµµhat±ya atigambh²re sa½s±ras±gare attano patiµµh±nabh³ta½ arahattaphala½ d²pa½ kayir±tha kareyya, k±tu½ sakkuºeyy±ti attho. K²disa½? Ya½ ogho n±bhik²rat²ti ya½ catubbidhopi kilesogho abhikiritu½ viddha½setu½ na sakkoti. Na hi sakk± arahatta½ oghena abhikiritunti.
