R±jagahanagarasmiñhi r±jagahaseµµhino gehe ahiv±tarogo uppajji, tasmi½ uppanne makkhik± ±di½ katv± y±va g±v± paµhama½ tiracch±nagat± maranti, tato d±sakammakaro, sabbapacch± gehas±mik±, tasm± so rogo sabbapacch± seµµhiñca j±yañca gaºhi. Te rogena phuµµh± putta½ santike µhita½ oloketv± assupuººehi nettehi ta½ ±ha½su– “t±ta, imasmi½ kira roge uppanne bhitti½ bhinditv± pal±yant±va j²vita½ labhanti, tva½ amhe anoloketv± pal±yitv± j²vanto pun±gantv± amh±ka½ asukaµµh±ne n±ma catt±l²sa dhanakoµiyo nidahitv± µhapit±, t± uddharitv± j²vika½ kappeyy±s²”ti. So tesa½ vacana½ sutv± rudam±no m±t±pitaro vanditv± maraºabhayabh²to bhitti½ bhinditv± pal±yitv± pabbatagahana½ gantv± dv±dasa vass±ni tattha vasitv± m±t±pituvasanaµµh±na½ pacc±gañchi.
Atha na½ daharak±le gantv± par³¼hakesamassuk±le ±gatatt± na koci sañj±ni. So m±t±pit³hi dinnasaññ±vasena dhanaµµh±na½ gantv± dhanassa arogabh±va½ ñatv± cintesi– “ma½ na koci sañj±n±ti, sac±ha½ dhana½ uddharitv± valañjiss±mi, ‘ekena duggatena nidhi uddhaµo’ti ma½ gahetv± viheµheyyu½, ya½n³n±ha½ bhati½ katv± j²veyyan”ti. Atheka½ pilotika½ niv±setv±, “atthi koci bhatakena atthiko”ti pucchanto bhatakav²thi½ p±puºi. Atha na½ bhatak± disv±, “sace amh±ka½ eka½ kamma½ karissasi, bhattavetana½ te dass±m±”ti ±ha½su. “Ki½ kamma½ n±m±”ti? “Pabodhanacodanakamma½. Sace ussahasi, p±tova uµµh±ya ‘t±t±, uµµhahatha, sakaµ±ni sannayhatha, goºe yojetha, hatthi-ass±na½ tiºatth±ya gamanavel±; amm±, tumhepi uµµhahatha, y±gu½ pacatha, bhatta½ pacath±’ti vicaritv± ±roceh²”ti. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchi. Athassa vasanatth±ya eka½ ghara½ ada½su. So devasika½ ta½ kamma½ ak±si.
Athassa ekadivasa½ r±j± bimbis±ro saddamassosi. So pana sabbaravaññ³ ahosi. Tasm± “mah±dhanassa purisassesa saddo”ti ±ha. Athassa santike µhit± ek± paric±rik± “r±j± ya½ v± ta½ v± na kathessati, ida½ may± ñ±tu½ vaµµat²”ti cintetv±– “gaccha, t±ta, eta½ j±n±h²”ti eka½ purisa½ pahiºi. So vegena gantv± ta½ disv± ±gantv±, “eko bhatak±na½ bhatik±rako kapaºamanusso eso”ti ±rocesi. R±j± tassa vacana½ sutv± tuºh² hutv± dutiyadivasepi tatiyadivasepi ta½ tassa sadda½ sutv± tatheva ±ha. S±pi paric±rik± tatheva cintetv± punappuna½ pesetv±, “kapaºamanusso eso”ti vutte cintesi– “r±j± ‘kapaºamanusso eso’ti vacana½ sutv±pi na saddahati, punappuna½ ‘mah±dhanassa purisassesa saddo’ti vadati, bhavitabbamettha k±raºena, yath±sabh±vato eta½ ñ±tu½ vaµµat²”ti. S± r±j±na½ ±ha, “deva aha½ sahassa½ labham±n± dh²tara½ ±d±ya gantv± eta½ dhana½ r±jakula½ pavesess±m²”ti. R±j± tass± sahassa½ d±pesi.
S± ta½ gahetv± dh²tara½ eka½ malinadh±tuka½ vattha½ niv±s±petv± t±ya saddhi½ r±jagehato nikkhamitv± maggapaµipann± viya bhatakav²thi½ gantv± eka½ ghara½ pavisitv±, “amma, maya½ maggapaµipann±, ek±hadv²ha½ idha vissamitv± gamiss±m±”ti ±ha. “Amma, bah³ni gharam±nusak±ni, na sakk± idha vasitu½, eta½ kumbhaghosakassa geha½ tuccha½, tattha gacchath±”ti. S± tattha gantv±, “s±mi, maya½ maggapaµipannak±, ek±hadv²ha½ idha vasiss±m±”ti vatv± tena punappuna½ paµikkhitt±pi, “s±mi, ajjekadivasamatta½ vasitv± p±tova gamiss±m±”ti nikkhamitu½ na icchi. S± tattheva vasitv± punadivase tassa araññagamanavel±ya, “s±mi, tava niv±pa½ datv± y±hi ±h±ra½ te paciss±m²”ti vatv±, “ala½, amma, ahameva pacitv± bhuñjiss±m²”ti vutte punappuna½ nibandhitv± tena dinne gahitamattakeyeva katv± antar±paºato bh±jan±ni ceva parisuddhataº¹ul±d²ni ca ±har±petv± r±jakule pacananiy±mena suparisuddha½ odana½, s±dhuras±ni ca dve t²ºi s³pabyañjan±ni pacitv± tassa araññato ±gatassa ad±si. Atha na½ bhuñjitv± muducittata½ ±panna½ ñatv±, “s±mi, kilantamha, ek±hadv²ha½ idheva hom±”ti ±ha. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchi.
Athassa s±yampi punadivasepi madhurabhatta½ pacitv± ad±si. Atha muducittata½ tassa ñatv± “s±mi, katip±ha½ idheva vasiss±m±”ti. Tattha vasam±n± tikhiºena satthena tassa mañcav±ºa½ heµµh±-aµaniya½ taha½ taha½ chindi. Mañco tasmi½ ±gantv± nisinnamatteyeva heµµh± olambi. So “kasm± aya½ mañco eva½ chijjitv± gato”ti ±ha. “S±mi, daharad±rake v±retu½ na sakkomi, ettheva sannipatant²”ti. “Amma, ida½ me dukkha½ tumhe niss±ya j±ta½. Ahañhi pubbe katthaci gacchanto dv±ra½ pidahitv± gacch±m²”ti. “Ki½ karomi, t±ta, v±retu½ na sakkom²”ti. S± imin±va niy±mena dve tayo divase chinditv± tena ujjh±yitv± kh²yitv± vuccam±n±pi tatheva vatv± puna eka½ dve rajjuke µhapetv± sese chindi. Ta½ divasa½ tasmi½ nisinnamatteyeva sabba½ v±ºa½ bh³miya½ pati, s²sa½ jaººukehi saddhi½ ekato ahosi, so uµµh±ya, “ki½ karomi, id±ni kuhi½ gamiss±mi nipajjanamañcassapi tumhehi as±miko viya katomh²”ti ±ha. “T±ta, ki½ karomi, paµivissakad±rake v±retu½ na sakkomi, hotu, m± cintayi, im±ya n±ma vel±ya kuhi½ gamissas²”ti dh²tara½ ±mantetv±, “amma, tava bh±tikassa nipajjanok±sa½ karoh²”ti ±ha. S± ekapasse sayitv± “idh±gaccha, s±m²”ti ±ha. Itaropi na½ “gaccha, t±ta, bhaginiy± saddhi½ nipajj±”ti vadesi. So t±ya saddhi½ ekamañce nipajjitv± ta½ divasaññeva santhava½ ak±si, kum±rik± parodi. Atha na½ m±t± pucchi– “ki½, amma, rodas²”ti? “Amma, ida½ n±ma j±tan”ti. “Hotu, amma, ki½ sakk± k±tu½, tay±pi eka½ bhatt±ra½ imin±peka½ p±daparic±rika½ laddhu½ vaµµat²”ti ta½ j±m±tara½ ak±si. Te samaggav±sa½ vasi½su.
S± katip±haccayena rañño s±sana½ pesesi– “bhatakav²thiya½ chaºa½ karontu. Yassa pana ghare chaºo na kar²yati, tassa ettako n±ma daº¹oti ghosana½ k±ret³”ti. R±j± tath± k±resi. Atha na½ sassu ±ha– “t±ta, bhatakav²thiya½ r±j±º±ya chaºo kattabbo j±to, ki½ karom±”ti? “Amma, aha½ bhati½ karontopi j²vitu½ na sakkomi, ki½ kariss±m²”ti? “T±ta, ghar±v±sa½ vasant± n±ma iºampi gaºhanti, rañño ±º± ak±tu½ na labbh±. Iºato n±ma yena kenaci up±yena muccitu½ sakk±, gaccha, kutoci eka½ v± dve v± kah±paºe ±har±”ti ±ha. So ujjh±yanto kh²yanto gantv± catt±l²sakoµidhanaµµh±nato ekameva kah±paºa½ ±hari. S± ta½ kah±paºa½ rañño pesetv± attano kah±paºena chaºa½ katv± puna katip±haccayena tatheva s±sana½ pahiºi. Puna r±j± tatheva “chaºa½ karontu, akaront±na½ ettako daº¹o”ti ±º±pesi. Punapi so t±ya tatheva vatv± nipp²¼iyam±no gantv± tayo kah±paºe ±hari. S± tepi kah±paºe rañño pesetv± puna katip±haccayena tatheva s±sana½ pahiºi– “id±ni purise pesetv± ima½ pakkos±pet³”ti. R±j± pesesi. Puris± gantv±, “kumbhaghosako n±ma kataro”ti pucchitv± pariyesant± ta½ disv± “ehi, bho r±j±, ta½ pakkosat²”ti ±ha½su. So bh²to “na ma½ r±j± j±n±t²”ti-±d²ni vatv± gantu½ na icchi. Atha na½ balakk±rena hatth±d²su gahetv± ±ka¹¹hi½su. S± itth² te disv±, “are, dubbin²t±, tumhe mama j±m±tara½ hatth±d²su gahetu½ ananucchavik±”ti tajjetv±, “ehi, t±ta, m± bh±yi, r±j±na½ disv± tava hatth±dig±hak±na½ hattheyeva chind±pess±m²”ti dh²tara½ ±d±ya purato hutv± r±jageha½ patv± vesa½ parivattetv± sabb±laªk±rapaµimaº¹it± ekamanta½ aµµh±si. Itarampi parika¹¹hitv± ±nayi½suyeva.

So sañj±nitv±, “aho b±lomhi, katha½ nu kho ime rañño hattha½ patt±”ti ito cito ca olokento t± dvepi paµimaº¹itapas±dhan± gabbhadv±ram³le µhit± disv±, “bh±riya½ vatida½ kamma½, im±hi raññ± payojit±hi bhavitabban”ti cintesi. Atha na½ r±j± “vadehi, bho, kasm± eva½ karos²”ti ±ha. “Nissayo me natthi, dev±”ti. “M±diso nissayo bhavitu½ na vaµµat²”ti. “Kaly±ºa½, deva, sace me devo avassayo hot²”ti. “Homi, bho, kittaka½ te dhanan”ti? “Catt±l²sakoµiyo, dev±”ti. “Ki½ laddhu½ vaµµat²”ti? “Sakaµ±ni dev±”ti? Ta½ sutv± satth± “eva½ j²vantassa j²vika½ dhammikaj²vika½ n±ma, mah±r±ja, corik±dikamma½ pana idhaloke ceva p²¼eti hi½seti, paraloke ca, tatonid±na½ sukha½ n±ma natthi. Purisassa hi dhanap±rijuññak±le kasi½ v± bhati½ v± katv± j²vikameva dhammikaj²vika½ n±ma. Evar³passa hi v²riyasampannassa satisampannassa k±yav±c±hi parisuddhakammassa paññ±ya nisammak±rino k±y±d²hi saññatassa dhammaj²vika½ j²vantassa sati-avippav±se µhitassa issariya½ va¹¹hatiyev±”ti vatv± ima½ g±tham±ha–
24. “Uµµh±navato sat²mato,
sucikammassa nisammak±rino;
saññatassa dhammaj²vino,
appamattassa yasobhiva¹¹hat²”ti.
Tattha uµµh±navatoti uµµh±nav²riyavantassa. Satimatoti satisampannassa. Sucikammass±ti niddosehi nirapar±dhehi k±yakamm±d²hi samann±gatassa. Nisammak±rinoti evañce bhavissati, eva½ kariss±m²ti v±, imasmi½ kamme eva½ kate ida½ n±ma bhavissat²ti v± eva½ nid±na½ sallakkhetv± rogatikicchana½ viya sabbakamm±ni nis±metv± upadh±retv± karontassa. Saññatass±ti k±y±d²hi saññatassa nicchiddassa. Dhammaj²vinoti ag±rikassa tul±k³µ±d²ni vajjetv± kasigorakkh±d²hi, anag±rikassa vejjakammad³takamm±d²ni vajjetv± dhammena samena bhikkh±cariy±ya j²vika½ kappentassa. Appamattass±ti avippavutthasatino. Yasobhiva¹¹hat²ti issariyabhogasampannasaªkh±to ceva kittivaººabhaºanasaªkh±to ca yaso abhiva¹¹hat²ti.
